velvet pro (vp) | custom keyboard

The velvet pro (VP) is a custom mechanical keyboard designed by ampersandy ampersandy.co, discord.gg/YKC8268QFE. It features a relatively uncommon Dual o-ring mount that's directly inspired by the now discontinued Noxary Vulcan Pro. The one in this video is a one-off commission for my personal collection, the first board I would consider truly "custom". While I never got to try the Vulcan Pro (...
Norbaforce Mk. III | Custom Realforce R2 Topre mechanical keyboard

My Norbaforce has been collecting dust for a while, but the wooden "Norbaforce Midcentury" riser for it just arrived and I've been happily typing on it this week. The donor board is a nearly stock Realforce R2 Mac TKL (I just lubed the stabilizers with some BDZ). The riser feels surprisingly light, but fits the Norbaforce like a glove, with virtually no gaps around the perimeter. Since the foot...

It's been a year and a bit since i built my Heavy Grail, and I felt it was time for a tune-up. I took the whole board apart, replaced a few loose sliders, and re-tuned the stabilizers. I took the opportunity to also swap to Deskeys 35g V3 tiffany domes, which I think are much nicer for day to day work compared to the stock pro 3 domes. I also added Sho's 1mm plate gasket, which to me makes the ...

    FANTASTIC! These key caps are phenomenal. We put our new ones on earlier and the touch and typing experience absolute TOPS! My own typing speed has increased significantly because my fingers can glide across the slick key tops and are able to move off the caps much faster than I was previously able to on ABS or PBT caps. These are smooth, glossy, and simply sublime!

    what is the 1mm sho plate gasket? can’t seem to find it online. also did you find 206 to be better than bdz on the wires?

    • @sagwatypes
      @sagwatypes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 1mm plate gasket is available on Sho's Taobao store: item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=761299340317. It's a poron sheet that fits under the keycaps and above the plate to dampen keypresses. There's a 0.5mm variant as well. Having tried both, I think BDZ and 206g2 both perform pretty well. However, it's way easier to lube the wires using a syringe, compared to a brush, so that ease of use is the biggest difference (I have 206g2 in a syringe, but I only have bdz in a jar, and it's so thick that I don't even want to think about stuffing it in a syringe lol).

    I did the same built as you with my heavy grail. However, the spacbar gets jammed when I mount it the normal way. What am I missing? Did I install the des-sliders for the spacebar wrongly? Any ideas on that?

    • @sagwatypes
      @sagwatypes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In my experience jamming usually happens because there's not enough space under the spacebar (keycap interference), or there's too much lube or another obstruction that's preventing the stabilizer wire from moving freely. Check to make sure that the stabilizers are clipped in all the way to the plate, and that the PCB is tightly screwed against the plate. Also make sure that the stabilizer legs move up and down without any resistance when there's no keycap on them (use a set of tweezers to move them up and down and feel for any resistance). Note that DES sliders aren't compatible with all cherry profile keycaps, but popular ones (GMK, ePBT, PBTfans, etc) should work without interference issues.

    what did you use to put under the spacebar wire? the rubber bit to prevent it from sliding?

    • @sagwatypes
      @sagwatypes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are wire cushions. The ones I used are leftovers included from a box of Owlstab v2's. I don't think these specific ones are sold separately, but you can find foam ones or just use some low-friction tape to get the same effect.

    • @sagwatypes
      @sagwatypes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@abusse00001 Yeah, had some interference issues as well, although it didn't happen too often for me. The stock domes were strong enough to return the keys, but they will feel "lighter" due to the increased weight. I heard the V2 plastic molds improve the interference issue, but I don't have a set on-hand to confirm. One thing you could try if you're having issues is to use put some paper or tape in the keycap's MX footprint to try to raise the cap a bit.

    Didn't have money for the whole set so just ordered the spacebar. The "thunk" it makes is very satisfying and feels very nice and cool on my thumb. I would get the whole set sometime in the future however, I really want the dents on the F and J since those are crucial for me to get back to home row when I inevitably lose it during long typing sessions.
