- A short comparison of the typing sounds between the new HHKB Studio and several of its ancestors:
- Pro 2 Type-S
- Pro Hybrid Type-S
- Pro 3 Classic (in a Heavy Grail)
Because it's made mostly of plastic, the Studio brings out a satisfying muted "thock" from the T1 silents. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound of the board and think it's feels right at home in a quiet workplace.
*There is a mistake in the video - the keycaps on the Heavy Grail are the Monokei Series 1 keycaps.

I've been using the HHKB studio as my daily keyboard for the past month now and it's definitely been a mixed bag.
With the inclusion of MX switches instead of Topre, I can't say there's much here aside from the nib and gesture pads that make it stand out from the slew of custom 60% MX boards out there.
Although the included silent linears are technically quite good, I ended up swapping them out for T1 silent tactiles. I think tactile switches feel much more in character with the existing HHKB Pro line.
The keyboard is decently good out of the box, but I did end up putting some poly-fil in the case to dampen the annoying case ping, and I syringe greased the stabs to remove some ticking.
Compared to the Pro 2/3 line of boards, the Studio feels like an interesting lateral move. Personally, I would have preferred to see an evolution of the Pros, perhaps with optional MX sliders, or modern amenities like a rechargable battery, or a software integration with apps like VSCode, Excel or Teams/Slack.
On the topic of the the trackpoint - it works fine, but I didn't end up using it much in practice, as I always had either a trackpad or mouse with me during the month. It's simple to use, and supports everything you'd expect including tap/double tap support, and easy access to on-the-fly sensitivity adjustments.
The gesture pads felt less nice. It felt like they went to sleep after a few seconds and I often had to redo gestures because they wouldn't immediately register.
Overall, unless you love the HHKB brand or really want a trackpoint, there's not much here that makes it stand out compared to cheaper options, like the Monokei Kei v2, Mode Tempo, Keychron Q60, or QK60.
I wish HHKB would bring back the classic or add two usb-A ports like before. That has been such a life saver to add my wireless mouse dongle to the the keyboard
Great comparison. I just got my new HHKB Studio, and actually it is better than I thought. Except space bar, all other keys are very comfortable, and the space bar is a bit like back-blade for long time typing. What is your experience?
My experience was similar. I ended up inverting all of the bottom row keys to make it more comfortable.
Curious, what do you think of the new Studio MX in comparison to the Hybrid silenced or Type-S in terms of the full experience?
Not using pinkie?
Incredible video. How come your pro 2 type s has no cable!?? Also because all your keyboards sounds like heaven- It would be amazing if you can teach us how to properly lub them. How do you do, what do you use. Your channel is pure gold - just subscribe to it.
There are some aftermarket Bluetooth controllers available for the pro 2. I’m using the Yang (YDLB) BLE controller. Install is simple and doesn’t require any soldering. Here’s an eBay link: www.ebay.com/itm/284918382436
@@sagwatypes Thank you 🙏
Hey! Looks amazing! Consider boosting the audio in the next one?
Yep, though since these are slient keyboards, there's only so much volume to work with 🥲
Especially compared to the background noise
Where do I get this Red trooper escape key?
You'll need access to a 3d printer, but here's the file I used to print the keycap (It works with most lego heads!) www.thingiverse.com/thing:4144968

I don’t understand these kinds of quiet keyboards , they sound awful imo
They are good for office environment.
They're meant to be quiet so unfortunately most of them are gonna sound mediocre.
Great people have preference no? I myself love this sound
Just like everything else in the keeb industry, it’s about personal preference.
