Haha, love that transition 😁❤️
Thank you for getting to a death army. Now you need to hit FEC and SBGL! :D Definitely hit orruk warclans after their book drops, I think there are a lot of anxious orruk players out there that would like to see some in depth analysis on the faction since it's been off to such a rocky start this edition in their index phase.
I'm tempted to pick up my Soulblight again, so we might get to them eventually! Stay tuned <3 - Jonas
@@strategoiAwesome! With the rumors surrounding the new soulblight stuff coming out, I’m curious to see what is going to happen with their book
I would love to to see you analyze FEC, i don't see alot of coverage of them post-index.
Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video! Would def be fun to get to FEC, but we prefer to not talk about the factions unless one of us has had some legitimate playtime with the army to help inform our opinions, and unfortunately FEC isn’t an army we’ve (thus far) committed to. We’ll def keep an eye out for a good opportunity to bring you some solid FEC content though!
Love this video guys. OBR are one of the best aesthetically designed units in all of AoS for me IMHO. Love them so much - but, that being said, I do have some annoyances about how *conservative* they are with OBR in 4.0. I only came to OBR in late 3rd, so I'm hardly an SME on the subject, but I loved the primary brick I ran of 4 mortek guard (2 swords and 2 spears, spears behind swords to abuse melee range back in 3.0) and then two harvesters. Split them right in half to have a mobile front line with Gothizzar havester support in recursion, some small shooting, and shockingly good melee that most people slept on. Nowadays, I feel punished for wanting my mortek guards. The harvesters really feel bad to use. Nowadays I just want to run as many horsemen as possible with the Kavalos & Zandtos + Arkhan. Maybe also run the Archai, but it really feels like a different army. Despite all my whining, I got the terrain (Despite it being a meme, it looks rad) and the awesome endless spells, so I'm super into the faction still, and delighted to see more content for OBR, so I wanted to engage with the video more than just liking and watching. All the very best to all of you at Strategoi!
Yo Rerisham! Thanks for checking out the video and for your thoughts on the overlooked units! Def agree it would be nice to see the Guard and Harvesters get some love, and not just points drops!
I hate all the anti-synergies that Mortek Guard have to deal with these days. They used to be the kings of synergy, but now their shield wall negates Katakros's armor bonus, and their anti-charge rule renders what should be the most on-theme relentless discipline ability for them redundant. Very frustrating. Stalkers also feel like they've really lost a step between only -1 ap and not having the extra charge ability. Otherwise I'm mostly ok with the index? I know some obr players complain about the new rd rules making units stick near their heroes where before it was part of obr fluff to be more independent, but I like the way it encourages more regimented formations. Maybe in the battletome we could get a change where RD is usable by any unit, and if a hero uses it its a bubble like current but if a non-hero uses it then it only affects that unit? Keep the encouragement to formations while allowing the previous independence where needed?
they know everyone already bought morteks and stalkers soo...
i would love a melee version of this.
Love the videos, thanks.
I love that you're doing this.
I know it would be more complex and there are against that at this point but for next edition where hopefully they can tune up the complexity a little bit. It will be cool if they just had Lieutenant and Captain tiers. They could use whatever word they want, but the stormcast Knight characters are the lieutenant tier and the lord characters are the captain tier. Then you could have lieutenants be inside a captain's regiment. The same goes for commander /warmaster which could potentially take captains as units etc.
We had something similar in Warhammer fantasy back in the day, where Heroes and Lords gave different bonuses and such. So it's not too long of a shot.
Hey! Watched all the videos on idoneth and loved them. Could you please do a video on in-depth army strategy, tactics, positioning through the course of a game and rounds? I think that would be great content for idoneth players.
Thanks so much for checking out the videos! Means a lot to me, especially considering how much of a labor of love they all were! Would be happy to get into the nitty gritty details sometime for sure, but we’re about to repeat the whole process we did here with Idoneth but with OBR, so who knows when I’ll get all the other stuff kicking around my head onto the channel. Will def keep it in mind though!
Great video guys, enjoyed this while painting my raptadons😊
❤️
Nice work mate, I've really enjoyed these deep dives into the mathy side of things.
Aww, thanks Hughzaa! Really appreciate it! I’ll be coming back to the shooting series sooner than later, but we’ve got a series of 4 videos coming out first on OBR (which will often be mathy themselves)
I absolutely loathe singleton as a format for AOS. With the stripped down ruleset, it just makes the game feel even more like an overly expensive board game or card game. I also really was keen on list-building when they first discussed it on the warcom site. I play Conquest which makes such a list building format work. AoS seems to have borrowed it but really sloppily implemented it without considering the key differences between the two games.
I feel your pain 🥲
This edition is very boring imo, every battle report I've watched have the same first half: it's always the same order of battle tactics, with the same kind of list ( spamming the most lethal units) and repeat, I feel like I am watching robots. Battle tactics are still there and bring the same problems, pressuring you to have the fewest drop possible to decided who goes first, meanwhile regiments are really constrictive and kill creativity. There are also too many effects that only works on a x+ or d3 roll, making some units feel really useless in a game. It seems that the guys who wrote the original rules for destruction convinced the whole staff that adding layers of randomness in a dice game, is the definition of fun. I appreciate the fact that most rules and time of effect are more manageable but the rest is so mid. Finally, the game has become really long to play imo, most people I play with and myself are in our thirties now and we don't have the luxury to take 3 hours for a single game.
Think adding a sideboard sounds fun, but significantly increases the painting and cost barriers of bringing an army to an event
Good point!
They need to bring incentive to high drops back. Warlord, Acolyte, Bounty hunter etc all gave big bonuses to armies that ignored the race to the bottom in terms of drops. I think there NEED to be a way to control who decides turn order because its a way too big part of the game to leave to random chance, and I have no idea how to solve that with anything other than drops. Now its actually random because everyone and their mother is a 2 drop.
Regiments = Drops system has to be changed.
Agreed. :)
Or is the problem that Fewer regiments = Fewer drops = choosing priority for first turn?
@@Findelas Yeah, that's the point they're making.
I think a simple and elegant change that they could make would be to say that reinforcing a unit uses one of your regiments unit slots. People are taking reinforced units to get around the issue of having 2K in as few regiments as possible. This would really open the floor. Also probably allow more heroes to be taken as units. For a slightly more complex next edition, I'd love it if different characters had different leadership values that corresponded with how many units they could take. The top tier would be Bastian, Katakros and Archaon.
@@RyanPST88 Reinforced units scale better with Command abilities and buffs and even the combat activation system. 40k recently made reinforced units more expensive point for point, I can even see this as part of the solution.
List building restrictions are the #1 reason that people didn't come back for 4th edition, only slightly in front of indexes stripping all the flavor and fat out of warscrolls.
I kinda like the indexes for their simplicity as well, though, because it's now easier than ever to understand an opponent's army. But I can also see how it's disappointing to some.
"if people were forced to play with different stuff you would be seeing different results" Um, yes? That's not really much of a thought? Like yes, if you forced people to bring different units you'd see different armies and different win rates. Because you're forcing people to change. And it wouldn't solve any problems because then you'd just run into different inequities because you're creating new problems. I'm not really sure where you're going with this. I'm not sure if it's true but whenever I listen to podcasts or TH-camrs who play A LOT of age of sigmar, like 3+ games a week, every single one of them is trying to find a different way to force people to not take what they want. And I'm confused by it. Cause it doesn't feel like it would help? It would just give you a brief reprieve of the meta until you got used to the new meta. In my opinion, additional restrictions do not create more variety. Freedom and balance creates more variety. And to some degree you will always see very similar or same-y lists because a lot of people just like playing what they see is doing well because it takes out the uncertainty of if the 100's of hours of painting will pay off in a fun army to play.
yea FEC would just wouldnt even be viable anymore if they could only take one unit of morbheg knights. I think you could just do 0 -X per regiment leader.
I don't exactly recall who of us said that, but we might have meant something more like what you're saying anyway. I agree with your last sentiment here: freedom in picking what you like, is where it's at. I think that's also sort of the sentiment that's hidden behind that comment. 'Forced to use different stuff' doesn't mean you only use that stuff. I think it was mentioned during a section where we were advocating for more variety, right? So in that case we meant you would not solely bank on the same one or two units to carry your games. Later on, we do agree that that wouldn't work for all armies though. :)
@@strategoi thanks for the reply! And my apologies if there was a misunderstanding. Though glad to hear we're basically on the same page ❤️
Wildwood needs to lose the ward or damage it does to everyone around it. Recursion of monstrous characters is busted. Should not be able to go to full wounds.
I feel you. The recursion for monsters feels very thematic for Sylvaneth though. Would you feel differently if it wasn't based on a roll? A once per game guaranteed recursion for ONE monster?
@ I would be happy if it was key worded like other armies. Non unique characters like the tree Lord ancient and units. That’s fair. The army needs to have some housekeeping. They needed to fix them. They may have made the trees too strong. I really like the army. I don’t want people to hate playing them.
I think Kroak now that he has reduced damage, he should have 18 range. That alone would improve him a lot. With 12 range and 5 move, he simply does not get in range enough
Priority target was one of very few things that made you not want to jam 1-2 drops. I feel after that change, for most armies more than 2 drops is almost strictly worse...I don't love the way drops decide prio in 4th, nor how heroes=drops, and it seems to be getting worse by the month.
Yeah I agree. More small foot heroes need to be able to join other regiments. For armies like ironjawz you need at least one wizard or priest but they're individual drops. It means most ij lists are 3-4 drops
The entire army building system in 4th is just terrible. It feels like one of those things where someone had an "idea" and they just wouldn't accept that it wasn't a good idea. It's the worst place we've ever been in terms of encouraging low drop.
@@assistantref5084 I think the issue is that they were to afraid to use the paragon system more? definitely feels like more heroes could have been those.
@@Dereck1234 Yes, but that's just a band-aid on a fundamentally bad system. What is the point of this system? What does it add? Nothing. There are no incentives for going high drop. It's just pure penalty. It's a complete step back from 3rd, where although low drop was still the most powerful, at least you got *something* for going higher drop. Now you get nothing.
@@assistantref5084 I think what they were trying to do was make the army more about the heroes and possibly limit it by what they could take. The issue is really good heroes in some factions can take the relevant good units of that faction compared to some that take a mediocre one to get access to good units. And then some like LRL need to bring named characters to bypass those restrictions.
Good stuff!
Awesome breakdown! Like others mentioned, would love an analysis of individual battle plans and how different army styles should approach them... I play CoS with 5 drop (need those orders from heroes), and some battle plans just make my brain hurt trying to figure out deployment
Thank you for compiling all this
Sure thing, Miles! Thanks for checking out the content!
Slow day at work. I've been waiting for one! These vids are so useful to me, not the least since my martian cult shootment phase is the mostest with the far out future there is. As always I can only thank you for putting in the hours! They also remind me of old statistics lectures at uni, and speaking as someone who has done both light level statistics research and fun&profit census taking at work, they feel like coming home. Research-life is a long ways away nowadays, and a brush yesterday with SPSS confirmes that most of them chicks have long flown the nest, BUT SOME GOOGLE DOC MAFS ABOUT HOW TREENTS DO CHUCKING REBARS AT MY BUDDIES, OR THE DATA NECCESARY TO PELT SPACE MARINES WITH RADIOACTIVE PELLET AT MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS?! Yes. My ensmollend brain can handle that catnip.
shame move like the wind got FAQ'd, now it's way more unreliable at 2D6.
Yeah it's a whole new approach
I got interested in aos just as 3e ended, and in lumineth in particular. And I'm still upset that i never got to play with Aetherquartz or my syar army.
Yeah, man, it's a bummer! We might get some of it back at one point though. Just hang on long enough 🥳
Thanks for keeping this up! Really appreciate your insight into the current Aos 4.0 meta
Thanks Michael! Glad you’re enjoying it! We’re really just getting started, as this content is still a bit too abstract for a lot of people’s tastes I think, but once we start getting into what you can do with it, it’ll get especially interesting I think
No Cities units on the list...that makes me sad. I would think Darkshards would have at least made it up there somewhere. Then again, many of the buffs come from external sources: All Out Attack giving +1 Wound as well and Extra Shooting Attack if didn't move. That's 31 Attacks, 2+/3+ for 140 points.
Don’t worry, though Cities units didn’t make the Top 30 with just a standard All-Out Attack, Darkshards, Fusiliers, and Irondrakes will all be making appearances later on!
Amazing analysis as always I will have to see it couple more times to get every value out of it
Thanks for checking it out! In retrospect I probably would have made a separate video for the math introduction, but in any case this sort of material can definitely come across a bit dense. Once we get into the more faction-oriented computations I think it will start being a bit more easily digestible and/or more applicable to listbuilding in a practical sense.
Love this. Very good analysis!! I got worked this past weekend by OBR catapults (not super efficient, very swingy, but their ability to make you fight last is SO good).
Thanks, dude! Really appreciate checking out the video, and always nice to have someone else out there like yourself that’s into the math of it all and doing the work! How’re you feeling about Hunters with Darts and Skinks as shooting units in Seraphon? Do they feel like they’re some of the more efficient units out there?
Oh, and I’m playing a Catapults list these days myself. Agreed on the swinginess, but into the right army they just obliterate things. Def questionable for a Covering Fire unless you really need them to be striking last
@@ryanburruss Very nice!!
While certainly an interesting point for discussion, this type of analysis is (as we saw) going to skew towards units where you are paying points mostly for their offense. The top 6 units all have a 5 or 6 save and are low wound count, so their points cost is mostly dedicated towards their output. The reason why units like Vanguard Raptors feel so much more oppressive is because they have insane output AND the defense of an elite unit (plus as you mentioned they have the proper support for positioning in the faction). This is why you won't see people complaining about Auric Hearthguard or Arkanaut Company shooting, because as a whole the units just aren't very good. This is why I think it's so hard to balance a wargame like AoS or 40k, because so many things are interdependent that you can't really just math out the points cost in a vacuum and come up with reliable results. It's not that there is no value in that, but it only tells part of the story.
I really enjoyed this. Nice analysis ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
I assume Freeguild Fusiliers where calculated with the mobile weapons profile? I was curious and did the math, calculating a value of 3.79 dmg p/100 for the fortified weapons profile.
Hey there, thanks for double-checking my work! While it could be that I had initially counted their base profile as mobile and didn’t take into account the new FAQ, even when I run the numbers with the Fortified profile I only get an output of 2.92 per 100 pts when averaged out equally against 6+ -> 2+ saves. So the following before converting to per 100 pts: 5.25 / 4.38 / 3.50 / 2.62 / 1.75 Average of these: 3.50 Adjusted for 120 pts cost: 2.92 So do me a favor and double check your math, and let me know where we stand. If I’m right, they still wouldn’t have made the cutoff for the video, but they are in deed close!
@@ryanburrussI have to apologise. Somehow I have added the dmg against 6+ save twice and completely messed up the average sum.
@@xammit7579no apology needed! I messed up the super long video Jonas and I made about Kurnoth output so badly that I had to take 3 hrs to fix my formulas and then we had the rerecord everything. It happens!
Thank you! It's nice to hear an AoS commentator not whining about shooting. It has been tremendously nerfed in 4th. Also, thank you for this content. There is nothing else like it.
Thanks Nephilimi! Yeah, I’m not much of a doom and gloom sort of guy, and though I get why certain players don’t like shooting, I think it makes for a multi-faceted game indeed.
The concept of shooting is not the issue, it's just a unit here and there that is too cheap for the impact it has (vanguard raptors).
Would Lotann’s passive work on himself as well? Or is he not considered wholly within 12” of himself?
All aura's work on the unit itself as long as they have the appropriate keywords 👍😁 they're always in range of themselves
I appreciate your analysis from an academic point of view. That being said I don’t know how much raw efficiency per point paints a good enough picture to draw much conclusion for efficacy. I think the median for average damage to max damage might help move the paint a better “on the table perspective”
Hey, thanks for checking out the video! Can you give me a couple examples of what you’d like to see? I have a feeling you missed some subtext (or something I actually said in the video but could’ve said more clearly), but I could be wrong
state of shooting is so easy as useless and unplayable. each edition the haters have got shooting nerfed more and more untill this edition where is so bad that it is umplayable
When has shooting been unplayable? Morathi and Bowsnakes were never a thing. Also Longstrikes or Blissbard Archers have always been very bad Warscrolls which results in ignoring those Warscrolls in their armies... right?
@@olafolafsson2755 dude learn to read before post,as i said shooting is umplayable THIS edition. next time read first before post and embarrass yourself
So now that we have a base, are we gonna get one within the context of their faction rules. Some of these units have some powerful synergies within their books for damage and movement shenanigans.
Yeah definitely! It is a series after all! Gotta start somewhere. Just stayed tuned! Got lots more to share
Methinks you forgot Skyfires
Though they are certainly good at buffing a Tzeentch army and getting around the board, on their base profile they are only a 1.83 output per 100 pts, so well under the cutoff for the video! Spoiler for coming videos, but the highest performing Tzeentch unit are Flamers, but even they only capped out at a 4.94 even with shooting a Burning Infantry unit.
Thank you very much. Sometimes i like to just roll dice and count numbers for units or compositions/scenarios i wonder about. This seems like a nice complement to get a couple of good baselines for reference. Granted, it also looks like it is a lot faster to do it digitally, but ya know; dice are fun 😅
Yo Christian! Thanks for checking out the content! Yeah, I do that often too, actually: just rolling dice for a unit I’m curious about just to get a good feel for what I can expect!
Great content as always! Always gets me to think!
Thanks a bunch! Always glad to hear our content is getting out to people that get something out of it!
Great review! I like with the pace and tailored content you have, guys. Maybe biweekly/monthly review of the meta state and your thoughts about it would be nice as re-accurent content
This is cool guys. Id be interested in a similiar style vid for top units in the fight phase at base when charging, or are charged. I guess that could be a really work-heavy video!
Yo Sneaky! Def plan on getting some efficiency stats out there for combat eventually too! But yeah, takes way longer to hit every single profile
Awesome, looking forward
24:00 Wouldn't a -1 to hit impact all units the same, since 1/6th less of your attacks will hit regardless of what your hit value is?
If you hit on 5s, -1 to hit reduces the number of hits by 50%. If you hit on 2s, -1 to hit reduces the number of hits by 20%.
Hey Josh, thanks for the comment! Totally understand the counterintuitive nature here, since you’re indeed just having 1 value removed as an option from your pool of successful dice rolls, but Matthew is correct because what we’re looking at is what percentage better or worse your chances got. Let’s go the other way around just to give you a more practical idea. Let’s say your initial had a 6+ ward, and is thus ignoring 1 out of every six damage points that come through. If this gets improved to a 5+, you are now ignoring 2 out of every six, which effectively equates to warding off twice as many wounds, so a 100% improvement. If however you went from a 3+ ward (4 out of 6) to a 2+ ward (5 out of 6), you would only be getting a 25% improvement in how many damage points you ignored, because the +1 is now just a quarter of what you were already getting (4 out of 6) instead of 100% of it in the 6+ -> 5+ example. This also works backwards in the Debuff sense, but with different numbers, as described by Matthew
@@ryanburruss I mean yes in terms of %age but it doesn't really matter because your total dmg and dmg/100 will be impacted the same (only exception is crits). What's more important is how many attacks a unit makes to achieve that dmg - the more attacks, the bigger the impact of buffs and debuffs.
Only units that have run and shoot abilities can redeploy and shoot because of the run keyword on redeploy.
the cover fire ability only says resolve shooting attacks. you're not using the shoot ability. only the shoot ability restricts you from shooting if you run
Thanks for your responses guys. @Warintherealms123, your take is totally understandable and is the way most people initially interpreted the rule. But Miguel is right: the difference in wording of “resolve shooting attacks” instead of “use the shoot ability” is what changes things here. But more importantly, they even wrote an FAQ to say that units can redeploy and still Covering Fire, but I know not everyone keeps up with those! Thanks for checking out the video in any case!
@@ryanburrussdam, this is crazy.
yea, i hate shooting so much and i hate that gw wants to make my skaven a shooting army atm, i want my meele glass cannon with movement tricks style back. most of my friends lists have shooting and its so frustrating and unfun to play against. i have to move my hammers in the right positions, planning ahead, positioning screens to then just fail the charge while shooting units just blast everything from 24"+ range and dont do anything for it. its just too much damage for how safe it is to deliver. if the opponent isnt dumb then you will really rarely reach those shooting units so your only option most of the time is to just take shooting aswell which ends in a kind of arms race aswell as "whoever gets to shoot first wins" and really sucks if your army doesnt have any shooting like most of mine or arent as good as your opponents shooting. im not here for playing 40k. i hope he talks about any of these issues, just had to rant before watching because im really frustrated with the game and especially my skaven atm.
