Review: Hornby R3983SS LNER, P2 Class, 2-8-2, 2007 'Prince of Wales' with Steam & TXS Sound
I've been tracking Hornby's latest steam developments over the last couple of years and have to admit to being was impressed with the demonstrations that were being shown.
While I don't model the steam eras, the P2 has been one of my favourite steam models so having a preserved or rebuilt version in model form was a way of accomodating steam on my contemporary layout. Given this, a retooled P2 with TSX sound and steam support was too appealing to pass over. So how has it turned out and is Hornby's latest steam implementation something for the long haul?

    If was a customer return, the retailer is meant to the customer, and meant to say that it was second hand. If I found out it was second-hand as in a customer return, I would've returned it. Other than that, they look below Hornby's Railroad cheaper items. You can see that they are light and look to plasticity.

    I do enjoy your informative and clearly presented reviews, thank you. Regarding the pulling power of this locomotive, you mention that the cause is due to lack of weight. I would have thought that if lack of weight was the problem, then the loco would simply spin its wheels when loaded. Therefore I would expect that the actual issue is that the motor is just not powerful enough. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding.

    The excuse you give at the beginning few seconds of this video for running a steam train on your layout, it’s pathetic I have never understood people that model a particular era and then say oh well I would love to run this other locomotive but it doesn’t gel it doesn’t blend in with the year the decade I’m modelling that’s just sad you know just because you’re run modern air diesels for example on your layout and you really love a pacific steam train oh my God just buy it and run it round the layout does it really make any difference? You can still go back to running a timetable with your modern diesels and I will later after having a bit of a run around with the steam train or vice versa run steam is layout and fancies your diesel. Shouldn’t need an excuse if you have the means to buy it buy it run it have fun, if you have to find a reason and an excuse to be able to fit that in in your world/layout you’re losing some of the fun

    I have both the p2 and the Scotsman with steam and find the p2 much better with the steam function.The Scotsman having a smaller chimney develops a film through water tension after a while running easily fixed with a piece of tissue or cotton bud but you shouldn’t really have to at these prices.Some TH-camrs say this can be fixed with a few cv tweaks but it didn’t work for me also I saw someone say they ran a cotton bud with a tiny amount of wd40 around the inside of the chimney to stop the water tension forming but as yet I’ve not tried this but both models do look and run great.

    Overall a great review here Euvirail, as I said on your running session video of this loco I had recently picked one of these models up and I’m very pleased with it, first off it’s my first steam locomotive to be sound fitted, I have quite a collection of sound fitted locos now but they have mainly been DMUs, diesel and electric locomotives, originally I wasn’t intending to pick up Prince of Wales as I had my sights set on the currently available model of P2 2002 Earl Marishal but after seeing the Flying Scotsman released with the steam generator I decided that I wanted to try this steam generator out for myself but I didn’t want Flying Scotsman as I already had a model of Flying Scotsman in my collection, initially I thought I wouldn’t be able to get one of these P2s, many places have already sold out of the model but luckily one retailer had one left so I bought it, as I have said it’s a model I’m very pleased with, the steam generator really adds a new level to the locomotive, hornby should be congratulated for being able to not only do this but have it operate correctly with the steam and sound synchronised, that alone is fantastic as from what I have seen and heard steam sounds have always been a bit difficult to get right before, onto the HM7000 I am a big fan of this dcc system, currently I have 3 locomotives fitted with the TXS decoders and my experience of the system has been very good so far, it has been so good in fact that I have been looking at a lot of models in my collection and seeing if they have the capabilities to have HM7000TXS decoders fitted, as I said I originally wasn’t going to get Prince of Wales but I’m very glad I did, buying this model actually made me buy a bachmann model of A1 60163 Tornado to replace my hornby one which has a problem with its motor so I have both of the new build locomotives from the A1 and P2 Locomotive trusts in model form and they look great sat next to each other no doubt that will be a scene we see when Prince of Wales is finally complete, great review overall here Euvirail, yours looked great with the pullmans, I need to get my one on some form of layout at some point, currently I’m stuck with a small section of track or my rolling road.

    • @EuviRail
      @EuviRail 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For DC locos, I'd use a 9V battery to move the drive wheels and either kitchen cleaning wipes from Aldi followed by a dry kitchen towel to remove any remaining gunk or a cotton bud with some alcohol or light solvent (nothing that would damage the plastic). For DCC, moving the drive wheels is more of a problem. I've used the Gaugemaster GM50 but not 100% satisfied. Although it is pretty convenient in terms of use I found it wasn't getting all the gunk off. Alternatively I've used a rolling road with individual segments you can take out and used this to power the loco while I clean one axle at a time, moving the rolling road sections around. Need a cotton bud for this. For the rake size, I was getting prototypical max speeds at 65-70% power for 7 Pullman coaches. I can't see 10-12 coaches being a problem on the flat. Inclines will be more challenging for sure.

    • @EuviRail

      If I was going to use a Hornby TXS decoder long term on a 201 I think I would look to swap to an 8 ohm speaker, particularly if I intended to put the loco through some heavy use. For shorter term use and if you're not pushing the volume, I think you'll be Ok with the onboard speaker which I used when testing these out. I haven't checked out how the speakers in the 201 are mounted but an 8-ohm Megabass is probably what I would look at for a long term replacement.

    I’d agree with your findings. Only the sound slightly lets it down. The best value locomotives for the money. i even prefer to my cavalex 56. Lovely runners the weight gives it a lovely ride and an improvement over the Deltic, 92 and probably even their 37.

      I've run this model quite aggressively now for my review and while I haven't had any derailments, it isn't the greater puller in the world and the max speed drops off to a degree as you add coaches.

    Hi, great honest review of some very nice wagons, I missed out on getting a rake of these wagons in yellow livery years ago, apparently Accurascale own the moulds now as I’ve been informed, hopefully they will do a run of them soon, are these the wagon frames they use for the Rail Head Treatment Train wagons? Revolution Trains do a similar wagon which also look very nice and are full of intricate detailing, thanks for sharing.

    Hi Eugine. That has GOT to be the BEST RTR steam effect ever, and looks great on your layout. The P2s were mighty beasts. Can't wait to see PoW in real life. PS: glad you kept the "dip" in the long straight...

    • @EuviRail

      I couldn't get rid of the "dip". It's a nice test for any sub par design. I don't have any prior steam effect experience so no benchmark but the effect here is pretty good I believe and the "chuffing" works thanks to the sensor on the wheels.

    It is very clever the way Hornby have made the loco emit steam together with the sound effect! But I think the technology has not quite got there. The loco sounds as if it is going at 100 MPH. Maybe it is possible to adjust the CVs to make the chuffing slower and more correct in relation to the speed? Thanks for uploading.

    • @davew2452
      @davew2452 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I believe the chuff rate is synchronised with the wheel rotation. It's the sound file and the rate of which the steam is emitted is the problem. Yes, sound and steam are the same strength irrespective of the work needed or coasting.

    • @AllensTrains
      @AllensTrains 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@davew2452 I don't see how the chuff rate can be synchronized to the wheel rotation. I think it can only be proportional to the voltage applied to the motor.

    • @davew2452
      @davew2452 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AllensTrains There is a notched wheel on the driver which controls the rate on the atomiser. See Sams trains review of the black 5.

      @EuviRail 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for that. Nothing in the documentation on the steam function at all from what I can see. Even at a function level, it linked to turning the sound on and off rather than being a separate control. It's the fall off in steam when coasting that was my biggest gripe and you need to keep the water topped up to keep getting the best effect.

    @davew2452 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks for this. Rather impressive steam until the slow down / coasting. There seems to be just as much chuff and steam but slower rate which I guess is down to the control via TTS decoder.

    • @EuviRail
      @EuviRail 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Dave. Yes, the level of steam is tied to the throttle so it drops off significantly when coasting. I'm not aware of any CV tweaking that might alter this as the steam function isn't covered in the TXS documentation.

    Great video and review, what brought me here, my wife found this set in an antique dealer and bought it for me, sadly it’s not in the great condition yours is in but the bones of it are there, I’ve no outer sleeve, and the part of the styrene packaging that held the track is gone alone with the track, one coach is missing its trucks and the engines buffers are awol, but there is lots of bonus dust, Transformer seems different than yours, mine had a model date of 1973, So my task for the future is to track and track the missing bits, helped greatly by your knowledge gained from this video, Whatever happened Lima? I got a nice set back in the mid 80’s for Xmas, a Lima SNCF electric loco with two coaches and a car transporter, 4 red cars and a car loading ramp thing, that was back when I was 7-8yrs old About 15 yrs ago I got back into the hobby kind of, I’d been collecting 1/50 diecast construction equipment and heavy haulage trucks and seen some American 1/48 O scale trains, figuring these would add to little dioramas and layouts etc I made the jump, I need to find or creat an Irish O scale engine now

    • @EuviRail

      Thanks for sharing. You'll still find spare coaches for these on ebay and other auction sites, and at reasonable prices. Given the age, it must a H0 scale set. The coaches are based on UK MK2 coaches so the bogies will be interchangeable. Replacement track will be challenging but standard Hornby 00 gauge track will work just fine. Hornby acquired LIMA after they got into trouble. Hornby are still using LIMA 00 scale moulds for many of their Railroad models.

    Nice model from Accurascale and the quality is better than the Hattons model was. So well done to them for improving on the tooling they bought from Hattons for the Class 66. I am very much looking forward to getting some of the Accurascale Class 60 models in 2025 as well after cancelling my pre-order of the Cavalex Models examples. I am so glad that Accurascale are doing a Class 60 as I was let down by the Class 56 by Cavalex Models back in January and I even got muted on their section on RMWeb because I called out the quality issues because my model had a jammed gear tower. I won't buy anymore of their models if that is how I am going to be treated on RMWeb and I have a right to call out a bad model and I can handle the backlash too. The silver lining for me is that I have learned my lessons as I now do O Gauge and I have a couple of Class 60's and they are fantastic models. I have a micro O Gauge layout that is Hermes Road that I started this month when I became 44 earlier in the month. As for OO Gauge, Accurascale has always respected me as their customer and I will always support them as a loyal customer. 2025 is going to be another great year for model trains and will likely be when I make a new OO Gauge modern era layout too, so I will like bag a couple of these Class 66's as well once I have relocated to the US.

    Great video , I did see one model shop offering to swap out the none driven bogie car with a driven bogie set , to allow a greater train length to be pulled , could be a good alternative , you may need to change the coupling type on the original replacement boogie , I thought that was a good idea , but spare parts seem difficult to obtain, even traction tyres are out of stock at present.
