The Most Powerful Gas Cap Ever! – (55 Chevy Truck Build Upgrade)
In this video, I showcase a unique modification on my 1955 Chevy truck build: converting the classic gas cap on the cab corner into a charging port for an onboard battery charger. Most builders relocate the gas tank to the rear under the bed and fill the original gas cap hole, but I wanted to keep the vintage look of the original Chevy gas cap while upgrading it for modern convenience.
I installed a retro Shelby Cobra hinged gas cap and turned it into a practical charging port solution. This innovative modification not only preserves the classic 1955 Chevy truck design but also adds modern functionality for easier battery charging. If you’re restoring a classic Chevy, considering a gas tank relocation, or simply want to keep your build looking vintage while adding modern features, this mod is a perfect solution.

If I wanted to block off the port on the manifold and my intake on the car and run the catch can inline between the 2 valve covers on my car does it need to be vented or can I do that with a seal can as well? For reference v6 NA motor making maybe 320whp
Vented! otherwise you’re rapidly pressurizing the can.
If you have emissions inspections on you vehicle, make sure your vented catch can is legal to use. In some areas it will be off-road only. That's why I use a sealed can.
@@jessebunker6062 I mentioned that in the video
Haha you should have left it normal height instead of ruining it
@@ETsBees Haha I prefer it lowered instead of the Elmer Fudd look but I appreciate your concern nonetheless
😂. It’s like an abomination to lower a truck to me. I do like the work you do looks nice. I’ve been doing some research because I want to four link my f550

@@ronsmith7739 I didn’t want to because of the already cramped space I have between the frame rails. On this particular truck, that would have made routing exhaust and my rear mounted battery a nightmare
I can't believe you did the locking cap! I'm also planning to do a locking cap in the original location, except I'm going to use a smaller cap that I can source in stainless (used on boats) , or aluminum (Summit Racing has one). Mine will also be housing some electronics, as my tank has been relocated to the rear of the frame. For those looking to really go ratty on a rat rod, look up the cast iron locking caps for fuel oil tanks...

@@ChevyMan55 Yessir. Just the other day a ran into a guy that wanted to see the truck, he asked: “you’re going to chop the top right”… I said no way! Some cars look great with the chop, but I think it ruins the lines of this model - he was completely flabbergasted that I wasn’t even considering it. Different strokes…
I have been trying to think of a cool place to hide a battery master switch. I might find a locking fuel cap for the Apache and see if I can hide a battery master switch inside. You have inspired me, Mike.

Well.... that was different.
@@mwood411 HAHAHA… Yeah, I don’t do a lot of quirky mods but I have to sneak one in every build
I like it, I just used the original horn button cap to fill the hole. Wish I would have thought about a battery tender type like you did. Awesome job 👏
@@brianmcnabb5417 thank you. Hey that’s cool! I’m a big fan of repurposing.
I'd switch to black screws. Fuel tanks in cabs are safer than a lot of people give them credit for. An accident that would damage the tank in the cab would probably already have mortally wounded the occupants. Whereas a rear tank just needs a rearend accident. Also, Tanks Inc. definitely makes great products. I have their stainless tanks and dual tank hose kit on my ls swapped squarebody.
@@ranwhenparkedgarage I agree with much of that. I think the drawbacks for me personally are more about the possibility of odors in the cab, the inevitable sloshing sound and wanting to have the available space behind the seat. I agree somewhat with the safety part as not much of ANYTHING about these old trucks scream “safety” to begin with lol.
Looks good
Thank you sir! Much appreciated

@ Thank you sir. Much appreciated!
What gauge metal and where did you get the bolts from
@@williamdavidson2385 I used 16g cold rolled steel and m6 titanium bolts here: amzn.to/48MWTU4
Some people say that sealed is good for under boost, to help with crancase pressure since its constant or the turbo helps, and if you dont have a can between preturbo and pcv port oil will get suck into the turbo during boost, like the turbo will pull oil out or something. So im confused which to choose, vented or seal.
Is it different when working with an open system (has no valve). 2 ports on the valve cover connects to preturbo and throttle body (all together, the ports aren't seperated or the turbo and throttle body) 7mgte
@@toxicwolfgaming2972 With the excesses crankcase pressure created by boost, IMO - vented just makes the most sense.
@intheshoptv right, it has a road draft tube so the engine regulates the pressure so I think it swaps the flow to either intake and turbo

I been following your build man but i ran into a problem wondering if you had the same problem i need to purchase the radiator support brackets that bolt on to the frame but i can not find them any ideas? Also would like to replace the bushing the go there but having no luck??
@@juanrocha6548 there are two different types of core support mounts. One set is for the original I6, and the other for the V8 option. The I6 mounts place the core support a bit further forward and are a bit taller since they move forward on the frame where it starts to slope downward. I had the v8 mounts on my truck but needed the I6. I found a set by posting on the 55-59 Facebook groups. As for the core support bushings and mounting hardware, they were pretty easy to find online classicparts.com/1955-59-radiator-support-mounting-kit?srsltid=AfmBOoo_Hs7TomSo7ZoDwy1HM0YK_k0MH-QWufk40XIvGAbs9QbxFLEYzxw
Some food for thought, venting to air keeps the crankcase at atmosphere. Venting back to the intake would keep the crankcase in a slight vacuum(in my mind is better). Like you i dont like the idea of oily air going back into the intake, so why not connect to your ehaust?
I was actually discussing doing that with someone on the LS forums a few weeks ago.
Are your valve covers baffled? Im considering the motion works can, but my valve covers are ported in the center and at the back..not towards the front and top.
Yes, they are the Holley designed covers with baffles. I think my second video I ever made on this channel goes over the valve covers: th-cam.com/video/ttM56QBpCL8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=URLN10moRGT5jXhX
