How Good is Your eInk?
I've become aware of a few eInk-specific qualities that I wanted to point out and explore with you all. These are Background Contrast, Line Quality, and what I like to call... The "Screen-To-Display" Ratio (I know, you'll see). I hope that you come away thinking a little more about these qualities when you make your next eInk purchase. Enjoy!

Supernote Gestures Rant: Excerpt
มุมมอง 2524 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
First off let me say, that I love the Super Note platform. With that being said though, not everything is perfect in ceramic nib land. The gestures are by far the worst part of the Super Note experience for me. So much so that I went on a journey to find a ceramic nib pen with a button just to mitigate the issue. I outline that journey in a video I linked below. Thanks for watching and please s...

The Best eInk Writing Setup
มุมมอง 942วันที่ผ่านมา
eInk tablet surfaces from Boox, reMarkable, and Supernote that are built for note-taking all deploy a film over the screen to provide some tactile feedback to the writer. These vary from device to device and what's more, the stylus tips (nibs) used also affect the feel. I felt (no pun intended) the need to do some tests on the different eInk tablet surfaces. I wanted to try different nib types/...

Lamy AL Star (Wacom EMR Stylus): Unboxing

This was a purchase I made because I needed a button to keep me from going to the toolbar so often to erase or select something. BOOX has always had the best anti-aliasing. I think the supernote does some anti-aliasing while you are writing and then does additional anti-aliasing in the background and the current version - the one you have - may be the best anti-aliasing out of anything on the market today. Also, isn't the remarkable a lower DPI?

    • @rantsabouttechnology
      @rantsabouttechnology ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yup, I think the DPI on the reMarkable 2 is 227, and 300 on the NA3C and the Tab Mini C. But sometimes the DPI doesn't tell the full story. And I agree that Boox has the best anti-aliasing. Looks almost too good, lol. Thanks for the comment!

  • @VidMashUp
    @VidMashUp 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    The color ones are inherently different and it's not really a fair comparison to put the color devices up against the black and white devices and that's for a lot of reasons.

    • @rantsabouttechnology
      @rantsabouttechnology ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I realize that the Kaleido 3 screens are going to be inherently darker do to the extra color layer. But as you saw, even within the Kaleido 3 screens there is variation. I just wanted to show those variations. I also think there's some value in seeing the difference, even between Kaleido, and non-kaleido screens. To show how that extra Kaleido layer actually affects the brightness of the screen. Well, at least that was the hope, lol.

    Glass is scary on a device as thin as the Go 10.3, but if it's not as fragile as the reMarkable, it could be a promising entry. Especially at this price point. The cover has a kickstand function, so that's a plus as well.

    • @rantsabouttechnology

    I think it may be a bit short-sighted to only view the Go 10.3 in relation to reMarkable. Supernote had a strong market position with the A5X, but ran into release problems with the A5X2. This has created an opportunity for Boox to grab market share before the new Supernote hits the market in Q3 or Q4. Also, the Go isn't "just thinner" than reMarkable 2. It has narrower bezels, is much lighter, offers freemark annotation for all document types, and access to specialty functions like Chordpro charting for musicians through the Play Store. It's too early to tell if it will be a success, but if it is, it could overshadow the reMarkable 3 as well as Supernote's next release.

      Hello, The remarkable 2 was just an easy comparison to make, if for no other reason, it looks a lot like it, in its design language. I highly doubt it will do anything to sway the Supernote crowd. The Supernotes have that film, the pens, and that quick Access Menu. And that my friend, Boox has failed to do anything about. Video coming soon.

    Would have been interesting to see how a b&w EInk device with light like the note air 3 stacks up in this comparison. Definitely brighter than the note air 3 c and the gap to the display will also be smaller but I wonder if it would be as white as an remarkable.

    Thanks for the comparison. I purchased the Note Air 3 and the Tab Mini and needed clarification about the differences and why I couldn't get widgets on my NA3. It doesn't make sense to have different operating systems. Boox seems to have many variations, and that, coupled with a very complicated and not-so-user-friendly system makes it a frustrating platform.

    • @rantsabouttechnology
      @rantsabouttechnology 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      LMAO! I think it's for the same reason Doctors and Lawyers have notoriously bad handwriting. We just do it so much till shortcuts start to develop that sort of transform your writing into your own personal shorthand. Shortening a line here and there, dragging the tip of the utensil, all done to save time. Lastly, my brain runs 10 miles a second (or 16.9km/s) and I have to capture thoughts and notes quickly. I've just succumbed to this style over time, unfortunately for anyone trying to read it. Cause when you write as much as I do, and I do indeed write a lot, it's not about etiquette. Now, writing is about documenting, as quickly as possible. I hope this answers your question. I couldn't stop laughing at this question, the whole time I wrote this response. Thanks, I needed that!✌🏾

    I really wanted to like this!! I brought one but unfortunately, i returned it. It came with shrink wrap on the box, but the box had what looked like fingerprints. It got worse as i progressed through the box. The sleeves where the pen and docimentstion on it had a lot of marks on it. The tablet was inside of the plastic sleeve, but it looked like someone opened it, used it, and put it back. So i felt the was previously used for a few minutes and put back in the box. Also, the tablet had a mark on the back of it that i didnt put there. I brought this brand new from Amazon. It got worse from there. I absolutely loved the screen surface. Didnt feel like paper, not quite like glass. Writing on it was awesome. Boox doesnt have continuous page scrolling when writing. Due to this, this would have been great for journaling because of its size. I took note of that as the days went by. That being said, writing on this tablet was better out of the box than the Remarkable 2 and also the Boox Air 2 that I own. I installed my google apps, and tried to figure out what I was going to use it for. Since it is a tablet, I found myself wanting to use it as one. I knew i wasn't going to play games on it or watch videos, but i expected web browsing and reading books was what I was going to do with it. This is literally where everything crashed and burned. The tablet even with its ultrafast settings, simply isnt fast enough. I was willing to deal with the ghosting, low refresh rate, etc., if it resulted in a favorable experience, but it did not. I have other phones, tablets and laptops. I found myself not even desiring to pick up the tablet, and I had just brought it. I felt that for $400, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and an OS that is at least 3 years old wasn't the best experience for the price. If this was about $170, I would have kept it and used it as an e-reader and a journal. But call it a tablet and charge $400, i just couldn't justify the price versus experience in my mind. I returned it and brought an iPad mini 6. It was the same price and similar size. The bezels on this tablet wasn't helping, but the size of it was what i was looking for. The iPad mini has an even better form factor than this tablet. I brought a matte screen protector that makes the screen feels like paper, and also brought the apple pencil. Unfortunately, at least my Boox Note Air 2 is now obsolete, and the Remarkable might be next. The expierence on the Mini is that good. If Boox and others can take the Samsung epaper display tech that they recently revealed, shrink that down to size, and put it in a tablet, I will go back to e-ink. That tech is next level, and the colors pop for an e-ink display. I will force myself ro ise the Remarkable because i invested so much money into it, but in my opinion, sadly e-ink tablets as actual tablets isnt just there yet...but i will be rooting from the sidelines.

      Los lectores electrónicos en color se han vuelto realmente buenos últimamente. No deberías tener problemas para encontrar uno bueno que se ajuste a tus necesidades. Parece que el nuevo Go Color 7 de Boox podría adaptarse perfectamente a lo que estás haciendo. Gracias por pasar por aquí y buena suerte en tu búsqueda✌🏾

    My biggest complaint about moving to the e-ink devices is that my fountain pens are sitting on the shelf collecting dust… I really miss my fountain pens, but not enough to give up the e-ink. The Heart of Metal pen for the SuperNote (Nomad, A6X2) is closer than the reMarkable stylus, but still isn’t quite there...

      @rantsabouttechnology 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, and I agree, the Super Note Pens are the only tools in the eInk space that can come close to the analog pens of old. That's actually one of the reasons I chose to buy a Super Note. You could always frame your fountain pens and make a whole memorial to their existence, lol. It could be good😂🤷🏾‍♂️ Thanks for stopping by!

    It’s when it does a time-out sleep it keeps the last displayed screen up. It will eventually go to the off/sleep screen - I haven’t paid enough attention to know when exactly that is…

    The only people I’ve ever heard complaining about the magnet/stylus arrangement have the pen on upside down (point up) - it is in fact VERY unstable that way - turn it around the correct way and it snaps in place like it wants to stay…

    I have 2 notes and a folder on my quick access - boom - 99% of what I need quickly right there. Other things come and go as I am using them. With that plus the recent files, I almost never have to open the files app to find a file… I also have my gestures set up opposite of yours - 2 fingers on the swipe bar is erase lasso and 2 fingers on the screen is the select lasso - and I think you’ll find if you run the latest update it is quite reliable.

      That would be a game changer if it works better that way, and after the update. I feel bad that I blasted (well, not blast but maybe a light Rant) it in my video thats coming out today. So If/When you see it, go easy on me, It was made before I saw this comment 😂. ✌🏾

      @@rantsabouttechnology I actually just switched up my gestures - I turned OFF the lasso/erase and made the swipe bar lasso/select - something I hadn’t realized is that the update added a trash/delete to the select lasso, making the erase lasso unnecessary. Now the only gesture I’m using is the swipe bar and doing everything from there…

    The day Apple announced they were discontinuing the Newton, I put mine up for sale. I couldn’t justify basing my business continuity on a discontinued/unsupported device! I do miss it, though - even now. I’ve been using a reMarkable for the past 4 years, and I’m starting to incorporate a SuperNote Nomad because of its realtime handwriting recognition. I love the reMarkable, and I’m starting to love the SuperNote as well…

      Man the Newton was just awesome. I miss it as well. Made it last as long as I could, but eventually... The SN is usually my first choice, unless I need more versatility (Boox), or I just wanna impress (reM2). If you haven't seen the new handwriting tools in the new Apple software updates, it might be worth a gander. Real Newton Vibs there. I covered it a little bit here. th-cam.com/video/uLZf-wNjQgg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qbtnNp2ftOZCUCjf Check it out and thx for stopping by!

      @@rantsabouttechnology I’ve got an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil - lots for reasons it fails as a note taking device - the 2 biggest are feel and constant distractions. I use it for 90% of my “computing” needs (I have a MacBook Pro for the 10% of stuff I can’t do on the iPad), but when it’s time for writing, it’s been the reMarkable (2) for the past 4 years, and the SuperNote is quickly coming online as well. They both do different things better than the other, so I doubt I’ll ever retire the reMarkable, but I’m finding the SuperNote to be my preference at this point.

    Because the Kaleido 3 screen is darker and lower contrast, and thus requires a nearly "always on" relatively bright front light for comfortable reading, it requires a relatively larger battery for similar operating time as a B&W display. Outdoors it doesn't matter so much for text reading, so the front light can be turned off. I still find a B&W display better for indoor text reading, even though the color display at similar cost is hard to turn down in a full function Android tablet.

    Boox have not been working on the Go 10.3 for four years. They are up to their 3rd iteration of Air devices, they have the Ultra, the mini, Palma etc. The Go series is just icing on the cake to eat up market share from the pending remarkable and super note releases. Remarkable have released zilch in the last two years. Supernote takes years to release anything too. When RM3 comes out, Boox will have a new device within 6 months using the latest gen of tech. The only company that can compete with Boox is Amazon and Amazon don’t seem to care enough at the moment.

      Weeeelll, hold on there for a second. I didn't say Boox had been working on the Go for 4 years. I also didn't say that they hadn't made anything in 4 years. I said It took 4 years for Boox to catch up to the reMarkable 2's design, their design only. If you go back and watch the whole video, which I encourage you to do (I think it's really good, lol) you'll see that I also say that whatever reMarkable releases, Boox will release something right after. So! you'll see that we are in agreement... if you watch it all. Thanks for stopping by✌🏾

    I hope Boox, Ratta and others, never forget that the writing & reading feeling, and the eInk type of screen or tech is really the only real differentiators that they have over an iPad. All their updates and changes should only be oriented towards those 2 factors: writing and reading experience and their “paper like” look (eInk or related technology). I don’t care how many new writing features the iPad has…it sucks writing in an iPad. Cheers from Mexico! Thanks for the reviews!!!
