In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, I am joined by Donald Parkinson, chief editor of Cosmonaut Magazine and Member of the Marxist Unity Group.
Donald and I discuss the strategy of socialist organizing today in America, Democratic Socialists of America (the DSA), the prospect of starting a new socialist party, and what the Left’s relationship to The Democrats should be. In the backroom podcast on Patreon, we debate the Biden vs Trump election, organizing in red states, MAGA Communism, and whether a Democrat or Republican administration would be worse for Palestine and foreign policy more broadly.

Something that frustrates me with older heads (even though I think I'm older than F. D.) is their understanding of how hiphop came into being. I remember arguing with Crazy Legs of Rocksteady Crew 15 years ago about how "breakdancing is and has always been a radical act." And his response was "make no mistake, hiphop came about thanks to a lotta shit. But no kid scrounging around the Bronx in the 70's and 80's for cardboard to dance on was thinking 'I'm doing this because I hate Reagan.' The conditions leading up to that kid being bored and searching for something to do are absolutely due to our economic conditions. But hiphop's core essence came from kids figuring things out by playing together." So as much as I disagree with modern hiphop art, I'll never say it's dead or that Drake & Kanye killed it. Hiphop will be fine as long as kids are allowed to play and express themselves on their own terms within this culture. Props 1Dime and F. D.. Also solid showing at Evo FD.

What is FD talking about? Kendrick played the whole FOX news clip of them complaining about his "hate the po po" line before he did DNA at the pop out concert. Are you suggesting that he is too afraid to go off on cops? Coming from the city whose police department was so corrupt that it was shut down and taken over by the Sheriff's department (equally corrupt)! No one in Cali is afraid to rap against the police, it is a time-honored tradition. Also, Lupe cannot dismantle Kendrick like he did Royce. At best it would be a war of attrition, at worst Kendrick would dismantle him with an Element style track that captures the culture. Or Kendrick can just ignore him as irrelevant. No, Lupe needs to face his actual enemy and step his tactical game up. His career was sabotaged by the DNC, the media, and the music industry after he went after Obama prematurely. It is entirely possible to be correct in principle but untimely tactically. He did not have grass roots support to make that move and it cost him when phone calls were made, and record releases were held up. Kendrick did not do that to him. Lupe should be dissing them instead of helping colonizer Drake and calling him, Logic, and King Von (for F@#* Sake!) better artists than Kendrick. No wordsmithing "lyrical, Myrical" drivel from Lupe is going to defeat a soulful in touch with the masses Kendrick. I don't care if he put the whole New Afrikan Creed and all of the communist manifesto into the track, he ain't winning.

12:35 " it is not an effective means to reach out to conservatives..." Only this far into the video, but honestly how could a content creator think that? Just looked it up and has 2.7 million followers on twitter. That's an order of magnitude larger than all of Peter Coffin's YT views combined. To disagree about an ideological matter is one thing, but the numbers that are publicly available do not agree with the point I highlighted.

I’m trying to figure out what credentials, position, insight does Tony have to be able to have an informed opinion on the comparison between 2Pac and Kendrick or on Kendricks level of activism or radicalism??? By default, Tony has nothing to add to such a conversation …..there are just cultural nuances he has no idea about and other peeled back layers he would not get. Kendrick’s level of activism was presented in his music artistically giving those who can relate, a voice. 2Pac did the same but also enacted his activism on a sociopolitical level in the community. Kendrick’s parents were not BlackPanthers, 2Pac grew up immersed around BlackPanthers until he was 11 years old…… Huge difference in the influence between the motivation behind Kendrick’s music and 2Pac’s…… I’m disappointed that FD did not check Tony on his uninformed talking points.

1:08:11 "what I worry is that Marxists will develop a religion without being aware of itself as a religion". That's an excellent insight! I also worry about leftist movements using Marxist theory to gatekeep access to power via forming an intellectual vanguard, rather than working on building "asabiyya" among the workers they are supposedly trying to liberate. It connects to your other point about many revolutions in developing countries starting as national liberation projects. It does seem easier to develop a strong group sentiment enabling self-sacrifice when people share conditions of colonial struggle vs. as a more abstract member of an international proletariat.

It’s funny, like a year ago, maybe a little more, I had said to someone something along the lines of, “idk if FD even has radical politics/is a leftist, but he seems like a nice dad, or cool uncle, who’s obviously more progressive than most.. I stand by the last parts of that, but I was obviously wrong on his politics.
