    This episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast is about Christopher Lasch and his famous book "The Culture of Narcissism." As I am new to Lasch's work, I decided to bring on friend of the show C. Derick Varn, who has read all of Christopher Lasch's work and wrote about it. C. Derick Varn is an author, poet, veteran podcaster, educator, and host of the podcast Varn Vlog and co-host of the mortalscience podcast.
    Check out Varn's excellent podcast here: / cderickvarnvlog
    Varn Vlog is on all podcast platforms: varnvlogvoice....
    Varn's Twitter: / skepoe
    This podcast is primarily about The Culture of Narcissism by Christopher Lasch and why Lasch's work and legacy is relevant to society today. In particular, this book is especially relevant to new age spirituality, hippies, the counterculture, individualism, neoliberalism, identity politics, performance activism, as well as the general widespread increase in egoism and self absorption in society.
    In Part 2, Varn and I talk about campism on the left, anarcho-liberalism, social justice warriors, and the phenomenon of new Stalinism/“Tankies”
    Part 2 is a bonus episode for my patrons only. Get access to it and other exclusive 1Dime podcasts by becoming a Patron at patreon.com/OneDime

    Many have asked me for tips on how to read a lot. Here is a hack that I use all the time to consume 10x more books when I don’t have time to read (I typically only read physical books in the morning): I use this app called Speechify, which is by far the best text-speech reader on the internet (trust me I have tried em all). You can plug in PDFs or links of books or articles, and it will read them to you. It’s scary how many of the AI voices feel exactly like real humans. If I had used this app earlier in my life, I would have saved so much money by not buying audiobooks.

    I'll be honest, when I first read it, some of the actual psychological/cultural complaints felt kinda prudish or uptight but a lot of the trends (not shaming anything, exhibitionism but not emotional honesty etc.) are incredibly relevant with things like Twitter and even the specific dynamics of social media.

    Hey 1Dime, I enjoy your interviews a lot. I’m curious if you went to college and what you studied? Just because I in the future want to develop my understanding on these topics.

    As usual I probably understood less than half of this as I don't know theory, however it was such an interesting discussion.
    I really appreciate you asking your guests to explain some of the terms they make reference to, even though sometimes they find it frustrating 🤠
    I could've listened to this conversation for another few hours 💜

    At the time CoN came out I took it to be a critique of tendencies coming out of the 60s and setting up housekeeping in academia. This academic caste would later give rise to identity politics. As a young Marxist I liked his focus on the abandonment of class but thought that the Freudian spin took his fastball away. Was John Patrick Diggens involved with Lasch? Diggins hated the left as a whole. Very depressive guy. Catholicism?

    Looking forward to it. If you’re looking at next guests, it’d be interesting to hear you talk to Matt Christman. Although you may butt heads about MMT, I think he doesn’t dispute its conclusions on how the monetary system works and theoretically could work to benefit actual human beings but I think disputes the efficacy of advocating for it under a bourgeois dictatorship. He does have a good breath of knowledge of history and has really interesting perspectives on things.

    • @1DimeRadio
      @1DimeRadio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I actually hold a similar position with regards to MMT. Ive talked about it on Varn's podcast and on the Macro and Cheese podcast. I think MMT is fully valid as a descriptive theory for the economic phenomena it describes. However, it is not a theory that accounts for power or class conflict. Hence why I am also skeptical of social democrats who think MMT will ever be accepted by a bourgois capitalist state. I am more for a synthesis of MMT and Marxism. A MMT view of money and fiscal policy, and a Marxist view of class, power, and relations of production.
