Sonic and the Secret Rings' Story is Great, Actually
This was actually a part of my last video, but I realized it didn’t really fit. I figured I still wanted to share my thoughts on the story of Sonic and the Secret Rings, gush about what I like and ramble about some of the misconceptions and weird takes some people have.

My Childhood Memories of Sonic the Hedgehog
Right now, I'm playing Resident Evil Code: Veronica X. Gotzen Diener reminds me of the Survive Horror genre. Awesome game and video. Thank you.
I want the apple market theme to play on my death bed It’s been in my head for 25 years
Oh, goodness, I remember Sonic the Fighters! Never played it, but I recognize the visuals. That game really has a very, very special style. Great to hear of Shadow the Hedgehog as well <:). Amazing video! You're really great to watch.
Thank you so much for the kind comment!
Thank your for presenting GötzenDiener to us, to me. Your channel is fantastic and I am very interested in your work. I wish you much success and joy creating videos!
Thank you! Creating videos like this is a real passion of mine and I am so glad to hear people enjoy me rambling about obscure media
It's kind of sad that one of my favorite series growing up with, as a later millennial, took the next generation to get anyone to talk about it besides me.😅 I played these games as they came out, at least in america, and revisited them several times throughout my late teenage and early twenties. And every time I'm blown away with just the amount of versatility, customization, exploration, that can come out of a simple premise. 'let the players have as much freedom as possible'. Not to mention no other game got the whole wandering ronin aesthetic down, whether it's from the warring States era type ronin(think blade of The stranger) in the earlier games, or the black powder era-esque ronin in the later game(think samurai champloo but with more guns and cannons), then way of the samurai. PLEASE BRING IT BACK. YOU GOT THIS OLD LOSER BEGGING. 😂
I’m glad to help share the word of this series, a few have been telling me they checked it out too
wtf that voice acting was crazy good neat highlight on this unknown game though
I played the first game because of this video and am convinced it is a masterpiece and have since gotten the rest of the games can't wait to get to the 4th
Eyy I’m so glad you gave it a go. This series is a gem, even if I don’t love 2 and 4, I hope you do. They’re all worth a shot and I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the first game
Way of the Samurai 1 is a PS2 game? thats wild to me. games focus way too much on 4k graphics ray tracing slop when all I want is to be immersed in a world with choices that have impact
Love Tenchu: Stealth Assassins and Shinobido and my kids love the Way of the Samurai series. I never go into it because of work.
Childhood.
This looks great !
Götzendeener ;) But kudos for getting the Umlaut right!
I pinned a comment earlier regarding this haha
11:24 This is actually a reference to a very particular thing that used to happen in certain eras of japan. The preferred way of testing sword quality was with human bodies, often corpses but living people was considered better. Particularly unsavory individuals among nobility or samurai who just acquired a new sword would, if lacking access to corpses or condemned prisoners, go out wandering at night wearing face concealing headwear looking for alone people to murder just to test the sword. I can't remember the particular name for this practice.
Do you have to play them in order?
No, they are self contained and you can play them in any order you want.
@Forrealsyall yay thank God because you really made me want to play the 3rd one over the others. Everything you described about it sounded perfect and amazing, and I never heard of that game when I was younger, so I definitely want to play it.
Your a g for the voice acting. Seriously <3
I was recommended your Way of the Samurai video, liked it, so I decided to check out your other stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to see you're a Gundam fan! I always wanted to play this game, but I never ended up getting a 3DS, and then I forgot about it. But I do highly recommend Gundam Assault Survive. It came out after Gundam Battle Universe, but before the 3DS one. Still, it has much more content than the 3DS game. The character creation is much more in depth, and you can become more than just a regular human or a newtype. There are also coordinators, meisters, and others. They didn't cut out ZZ either. It even has its own campaign. Stardust Memory also has its own separate campaign to play through as well. There's even a CCA and F91 campaign. On top of that, they added a bunch of stuff from 00 and SEED, and then sprinkled some Victory on top. There isn't any Unicorn, unfortunately, but the rest more than makes up for it. Plus there's a semi complete English patch. It's not much, but it helps. Check it out!
Oh nice, I’ll have to check that out. I kinda just stumbled upon this game and was pleasantly surprised by it.
Way of the Samurai 3 made me mad. Since i assassinated the lord and cutscene immediately played before i could claim his weapons. Like common let me at least claim what i earned.
Rent-A-Hero’s real time combat and meandering tasks really reminds me of what Shenmue would end up doing but on a much bigger scale. (it makes sense, the biggest creative of Keiji Okayasu worked on both Genesis Rent-A-Hero and Shenmue in high positions). So one thing I noticed about the Dreamcast version of Rent a Hero (and something the credits actually mention) is that they very obviously reuse code and animation from Spikeout, a game whose combat eventually morphed into what would be used in Yakuza (a game created by Toshihiro Nagoshi who also worked on all 3 games of various capacity). Some interesting interconnection.
(I also checked the credits of Rent a Hero, and it definitely isn’t a coincidence that a large chunk of the teams would eventually either work on Shenmue or/and Yakuza.
That’s some cool info to note. Appreciate the comment!
these were the best games ever if you loved the show, especially first two on console and gba
Oh man I loved the first one. It confused me at first why it was so short but then I realized what the loop was supposed to be and embraced it. I also loved that it was inspired by an actual event (supposedly). I didn't even know there were sequels until I saw 3 and 4 on steam I grabbed 4 but it didn't grip me. This video sold me on 3 though and I'll grab it on steam sale.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy the third one!
Lol GötzenDINER you said. It's okay. It's more like Götzendeena. You got the Ö right. I'm impressed.
I appreciate it but this is like the 10th comment I’ve gotten about it haha, so that’s why I pinned a comment a few days ago
Interesting little game with a rather negative/derogation name.
I still hope that we get a Way of the Samurai 5. The ideal would be to get our equivalent of Yakuza 0
After watching your way of the samurai video, I've been marathon watching all your content.
Eyy, that’s awesome! I’m glad you’re checking out my stuff. The last three years I’ve had so much fun making reviews and retrospectives.
Very cool and interesting game🫶🏿!
This time it’s the Princess’s turn to be the hero, or heroine. Kinda reminds me of that Hulu movie.
Somebody please translate this game❤
great n64 games
I forgot to mention that I really like how Sonic, instead of commanding Shahra to stop giving the rings to Erazor Djinn, he commands her to do what she thinks is right. Just another way of showing what Sonic values.
I played this game so religiously and thoroughly when I had it. Thanks for reintroducing it to the world.
Mmm goats for dinner
So basically do good and live life for life and the dead will stay dead along with evil and they will sleep forever
WOW ending so cool!!!
Wow
I came into the series at 4 and I'm currently in the process of working my way backwards, in spite of how janky the PC ports can be.
Hope you enjoy thegames you’ve yet to play. And yeah it sucks the PC ports are not so good, especially for 4, seems they kinda rushed that one. But hey, it’s playable
I love secrect rings and black knight, both underated gems. Great writing, decent gameplay, awesome soundtracks great video:)
too bad games now follow the same dogwater safe standard
This begs for something like GTA but in feudal Japan
Yo this looks dope! Thanks for sharing this, also quite impressed with the quality of the vocal sections!
Thank you so much, appreciate it
Nice little game. Lovely custcenes.
Where's the mention for Way of the Samurai Western? Also there are two spiritual successors to the WoTS series. First being the Ukiyo no Shishi/Roushi games, exclusive to Japan for the PS3/PSVita. Then, Rise of the Ronin, to a lesser extent.
The game you’re thinking of is just called Samurai Western, and is not directly a part of the WOTS series. Though it is the same developers.
@ fair enough. still good fun, though.
What what is this why don‘t we have more from this and tHE CHARACTER ART FROM GAINAX?!
This with new gen power would be rdr2 level
wow, had fun watching and im not even into sonic
Hehe nice
I've been looking for a game, an rpg that was likely on N64, the game cube or the wii or something like that, I think it was only released in Japan. It had a pretty generic story but a ton of characters and great anime style art, and the characters were at least individually voiced in the teaser trailer for the game, where they were introduced one after another with some dialogue from the game and character art models. I've been asking around but no one seems to recognize it. I think the teaser trailer was on one of those demo cds for the old playstation, and yes other console titles were displayed on those, I remember that distinctly because I wanted the game but didn't own whichever console it was for, and back in those days there weren't that many consoles.
What I loved the most about WotS4 was the whole "Make your own fighting style." And mixing up moves so you have this one INSANE fighting style that can combo your enemies infinitely. It was goofy, and I loved it for it.
Yeah that makes sense. Honestly when I played it I was so focused on being bummed out I didn’t vibe with it that I feel I didn’t give it a fair chance. But oh well. I’m glad you enjoy it tho
I GOT THIA GAME WHEN I WAS LIKE 13 AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING THANK YOU
you and your friend did a great job on voiceover. what is the easiest way to play these old PC-Engine games?
I used an emulator called Mednaffen. Since this is a CD based game, downloading it will give you several bin files and one cue file. Keep these files in the same folder and drag the cue file ontop of the Mednafen exe and it’ll play. You can also use Retro Arch to play it I’m sure.
Serve bots? I thought they where Lego bots 😮
Hopefully in future they re-release the game on an online store or on Steam, but translated.
