    Back in 1989 a hobby shop opened down the street from the house I grew up in. It was a tiny little hole in the wall place named Models East but unlike most hobby shops at the time it sold things like manga, anime, and model kits like Robotech and things like that. We didn't have ANY of this stuff ANYWHERE in Rhode Island at the time. It just wasn't being imported anywhere unless you happened to be into it, and knew someone who traveled to Japan. The shops owner (a guy named Dave) would often play anime dubs on bootleg he'd acquired from people he knew who traveled abroad and went to local sci-fi conventions. I was 15 at the time, and this film along with Fist of the North Star was one of the very first anime I'd ever seen. The scene where one of the characters gets blasted in the face by a laser beam was the first time I'd ever seen a violent cartoon death. The one where the pilot dies as they crawled out of their ship shocked me as well. It's still pretty disturbing to me even now. It's just that powerful.
    I'm grateful people still remember DYRL as It will always be special to me.

    I'm glad the TH-cam algorithm gave me a notification for this video as Macross: Do You Remember Love is quite possibly my all time favorite theatrical anime. I really like the darker more serious overtones to the script and settings. The animation is top notch and still holds up to this day. Haruhiko Mikimoto is one of my most favorite character designers and his work has never looked better than this. Everyone who considers themselves a Robotech or Macross fan owes it to themselves to watch it.

      Definitely, DYRL is a great piece of fiction and I believe that it has withstood the test of time. Hopefully it'll get a movie theather release soon.

    We didn’t know it at the time, but this was an early franchise reboot-and a successful one!

    I wished this movie received the same love that Akira receives. Its just as beautifully done, but 4 years older.

      I think the Akira budget is on a different level. But the animation still holds up after all these years.

    Macross Do you remember love is a true classic of 80 anime. I discovered Flashback 2012 about 12 ish years ago. I was blown away by the conclusion to the story and amazing animation and music😀💞

      Definitely, it's one of the best Macross movies and a great masterpiece of the 80's.

    My brother introduced me to Robotech. Later on I discovered Clash of the Bionoids VHS, I was blown away. I ended up ordering a bootleg dvd of Macross Series and DYRL dvd. I watched it religiously, the soundtrack for the series and movie is superior to Robotech.

    Macross DYRL is my favorite macross ever, so when I knew the reveal that DYRL is just a movie inside macross universe I was dissapointed. DYRL to me is the definitive macross experience. DYRL just screams "this is macross"
    good video bro

    From what I understand this movie is not just an alternate, updated representation of the 2nd half of this war, it's not canon so to speak, it's supposed to be a "movie" INSIDE the Macross-Universe, like we would watch a WW2 movie!

    I like the much more mature Minmay depicted in Flashback, and the expanded backstory (stage mom's influence) that (1) explained why she was such a selfish brat in the series and (2) helped her grow out of it. The moment she starts plinking on the piano in Macross Flashback gets me every time.

    • @fomalhauto

      well...Minmay was only around 16 years old when Macross started
      she was young and immature

    Harmony Gold still has the 82 rights to distribute worldwide except Japan , they will probably ignore it because they want Robotech to be the one people like, that sucks because harmony gold is a Realestate company wanting to be a major Hollywood distributor, they don’t care for OG macross

    Thank you for the review, very well made. Do you think this must be taken as a rebooth? Is the same universe than the tv anime? There are some aspect I like very much as the quality of the animation still aging very well and the more alienish inhuman Zentradi aspect and their conflict with the Meltrans. I like the fact the SDF1 cmaes from Meltrans as the Supervision Army concept was never too clrear fro me. I find things too condensed as everything happends pretty fast, and really didn't like Max macronization and his consequent affilation to the Meltran. Millya micronization and her desertion fairer.

    Megaroad is actually a massive "Engrish" mistranslation of "Overlord" (with Megalord as an intermediate step)

    Biggest change to me was how Hikaru was a douche for dropping Minmay for Misa. In the series, Minmay and Hikaru did not have much feelings for each other and it was more of him liking her while she had this bright new life and did not make time for him, so seeing him picking Misa was a no brainer. In this movie however, the girl was head over heels for him after he saved her life and he just dropped her like she was nothing. She never treated him bad, she missed him so much and yet after being away from here for a bit he lost all of his feelings for her. Sometimes it might have made a better ending with him dying and both of the girls losing the man that they both loved. Realistically after that ship blows up and he was in the dead center of it, he should have died. Not like it matters since he does not have any descendants to pass on in the latter series.

    • @rbedra1820
      @rbedra1820 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He thought she was dead when he grew feelings for Misa. Her return was a surprise to everyone. But he had already established his relationship with Misa at that point. It's a conundrum that the movie deals with pretty well.

  • @RayShadow278
    @RayShadow278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the TV series the Zentraedi don't attack the Earth just because of the SDF-1's booby trap activating, but rather because it is a ship that is part of the Supervision Army. Another alien force that comes back into the spotlight in Macross 7
    Even though Big West finally wrestled control of the IP from Harmony Gold, we are likely not seeing DYRL officially in this side of the world any time soon, because HG got to keep the rights to the original show and all of its characters

    Absa! Thanks for your breakdowns. I grew up on Robotech and quickly converted to Macross. I own the Macross Animego Box Set, a bootleg of the Macross DRYL movie, and a bootleg of the Flashback 2012 (with intention to buy the legit releases if and when they ever come out)... do you know where I can watch Macross Plus and all the subsequent storylines? I don't see it on Crunchyroll. Thanks again!

    I love the Macross series, But i even love more "DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE?" Even Though it is a retold compress version i love this one much better.... Btw i do not like robotech, it is the bastardized version if 3 different mech anime.

    I'd like to ask you, Absa: I wonder, what is the connection between - or how they connect to each other - DYRL, Macross Zero, Macross II Lovers Again and Macross Plus???

    • @absa
      @absa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DYRL is the in-universe "dramatic retelling" of the First Space War; Macross Zero a the prequel of the original series/DYRL; Macross II is an alternate future event (kinda like an elseworld); and finally, Macross Plus is the sidequel/sequel to the original series, more or less like a companion piece to Macross 7.

      @@danteroberto7412 I think that I'm going to finish Tomino's Gundam first (Victory, Turn A and G-Reco) and maybe then I'll go into the alternate continuities. I did, in fact, enjoyed a lot IBO and its super weird mecha designs.

    I too first saw this as the English "Clash of the Bionids" (worst dubbing ever). Theres a DYRL video game for the Saturn that lovingly recreates this style and essentially creates a first part of the film, which helps explain some things later on (like an aircraft carrier cut in half) I think if they ever re-release the film they should tack this on to the beginning: th-cam.com/video/dyVwXc5KTKo/w-d-xo.html
