Hello Mr Watts I am just watching a video of yours showing how you do your mdf doors. I also watch a man called Gary Thomson and he has an ingenious way to do them you obviously can do them as you like but knowledge is power
@richey761 Love the bloke, love the channel and the work but if it’s the method I am thinking of I am not a big fan. Really handy to know tho as you never know one day that or a variation of it could help me! As you say “knowledge is power”
Please make more videos, you were doing really well
@richey761 thanks so much for saying and checking back in! I actually have a 2part filmed but just can’t find the time to edit it! I might just do a weekly video soon or something because I do miss them in a way. It was actually great for my mental health too.
Epic idea and work 👍
Thank you so much 😀

Hi tony use a pole plastic is better
Have you tried Renner 863, fantastic stuff, my go to for veneers, and it's waterbased 👍🏻
Yes mate. It’s lovely to spray. I have been gifted some 1 coat 2part stuff that dries completely rock hard in under an hour so really need to experiment with that and film it. I have only been spraying a couple of years so I don’t really go on too much about it as I am still learning quite a lot. You are smashing through them! 😂
Really love your work. Just wondering what computer programme you are using for the cabinets? Also what did you allow for a hinge offset? Im a keen woodworker and hoping to have a go at my own face frame kitchen. Thank you. Greeting from Ireland
Hi mate, thanks for watching. I use Sketchup 2017 free version. For the offset typically I do 40/42mm face frames with 19mm cabinet sides and 18mm end panels so depending on layout I use the Hafele metal inset hinges with 0,2 or 4mm mounting plates. If I need more I just switch to Blum as they have more mounting plate options. Matt
😂 absolutely love your channel, breath of fresh air, slowly getting through them from the beginning. As a Carpenter & Joiner myself I love to see someone do things almost identical to me.
@jamiedyte3809 thanks so much for saying, I sorta miss these days of filming my travels! All very mundane but all very real! Fair play for doing start to finish.
Hi. At about ten minutes, why do you use a random orbit sander and the regular square one. I thought ROS was always the better option/finish? Not critiquing...... I'm just a curious novice weekend woodworker. Project looks great! thanks. :)...... (and subbed)
Appreciate the sub and love the name. Basically I have a love hate relationship with the rts (square one) it’s balance very well but can be a little aggressive especially considering it’s 2mm stroke and my ets (ROS) is 3mm! any way it’s is still a fantastic finish sander and good enough for this project. I often have a softer pad saver on it which helps give an even better finish. Waffle waffle, On to your point! You will notice I use it on parts that have edges like the rebates for the shelves. The ROS will sometimes catch these edges and cause the paper to tear and damage the pad or pad protector but the RTS doesn’t. I also use it any time I am dealing with internal corners for obvious reasons.
@@Wattsjoinerybarn Appreciate the info and explanation. Cheers man :)
Thanks for sharing mate

Thanks mate! Appreciate you watching
Hi Matt did you get a picture of finished job
Yes mate but customer did final decoration, I only primed. I need to post more on instagram! I will try and get some up there.
Nice job Matt the use of jigs makes it look easy
Thanks mate! Love a good jig
@@Wattsjoinerybarn don’t we all but my hips kill after🤭 a jig that is
😂
Nice job Matt. When I have made this sort of thing in the past, I always end up under pricing because they seem to take way longer than they should. I guess if you are doing them as part of a larger build, then it is added value.
Yes mate. It’s hard to realistically charge what they are worth, say £400 but then again they make the cupboard so much nicer so it may not be far off. Thanks for watching ❤️
For external joinery SIPO dominos should be used rather than beech but the failure is usually in the adhesive. I have spoken to many joiners about this exact thing and most of them swear by PU adhesives as opposed to water based PVA. The only downside is you've got to work fast with PU.
Hi mate thanks for the comment, I did use the SIPO (sapele) dominos in this project. I do hear you on the PU adhesive. I have noticed issues with PU. I find it’s weak where is wants to expand due to air pockets so i just opted for tight joints and an external PVA! I think going forward I will use the west system epoxy but I still haven’t got round to trying it! And then the job creeps up on you! Appreciate the comments tho and it’s a good point about the PU it’s just I have done both in similar applications and when testing the offcut on the joins the PU has a much higher fail rate, especially the 5min one! Thanks for watching
What was the jig used for the Festool router on the makita rail?
It’s the festool lr32 sled but you can just disengage the button so it runs smooth, before I had it I just made one out of laminating 6mm mdf, worked well Thanks for watching
Do you happen to have an Amazon store or anywhere to see the items you recommend
Ha no! I think it got mentioned before! I will try and do something but not my strong point if I am honest. Nice shorts btw
@@Wattsjoinerybarn I build bespoke wardrobes in my local area. Really want to start putting LEDs in my work. Also like your work a lot. It’s a exceptional quality
Thanks mate. Very kind of you to say! Yeah LEDs do look nice and once you get a good system it’s not too expensive. Like most caroentry the work is easy enough it’s just the knowledge that takes time!

Brilliant solution on the oak edging for the desk top, I will defo use that in my upcoming project, thanks for sharing.
Thanks. Tbh I always used to do this but perhaps got a bit lazy. Doesn’t take long either with a table saw, spindle moulder or router table! Really appreciate you watching Matt
Speak to mark Williams at spekva uk. I’m sure he could advise

hi mate that is brush with a wire brush and i would defo say it is stained oak👍
Thanks mate I will give it a go with the brush. I think I am going to try and get the finish with ammonia as suggested by someone else! Mainly because I can then put a clear coat epoxy over it. Worse case scenario I have a finish that will do it. Appreciate the help
@@Wattsjoinerybarn dont know if you know but you use the ammonia by pouring it into a jug / bowl and put it in a enclosed space with you job and leave it. the ammonia will fume the wood making it go darker. Ammonia stinks and its very hazardous, if you breath it in it will blow you head off so don't be tempted to sniff it when you take the lid off. When you've got the job in with the ammonia you need to keep checking it for colour, oak can go really dark so keep a eye on it and after you remove the job from the ammonia let it breath for a hour or so before you put any finish on as it can react with the finnish if you do it too quick 👍
@@martyn1678 yes mate. I wasn’t actually going to fume it, I was going to trial some different pieces by brushing it on in different strengths. I have done it before and it worked well, i have also done it with wire wool and vinegar solution. Luckily I have lots of time to mess with samples. Thanks for reminding me about leaving it before applying a Finish. I had been caught out with that before! As I say tho worse case I will just stain it with some tinted varnish solution I have.
@@Wattsjoinerybarn well i've never brush it on, we always use it through fuming , sounds like you have a plan i wish you good luck👍
I am gonna film it so we will find out! Will give you a shout out if brushing it on goes wrong 😂
Fantastic watch
Appreciate ya, thanks 🙏
Wire brush for the grain and a bit of ammonia for the finish.
Love it, thanks ❤
I normally use a wire brush( brass) to dig out the grain (go with the grain) and this creates the deep grain your looking for.
I've done that grain effect with a wire brush brush with the grain.
Thanks.🙏 I will have a play now!
Make sure it's a brass one though as the steel ones will react with the oak and leave black marks 👍 Love your channel by the way Lee
Thanks mate, very kind to say! Yes well said! I have had my fair share of nasty black stains on oak. Some of the pattern on this oak is quite dark and I wonder if that’s what they did then sanded it out.
That was a big in ……… nice to see you back
Thanks man, hope business and life is 👍🏻
Fascinating. The finish was absolutely top notch. Never used Renner paint but definitely gonna give it a go. Really good looking job, well done mate.
I can’t compare it to any other professional paint system but I never thought I would be able to get this level of finish with waterbased! Thanks for watching ❤

@@Wattsjoinerybarn South west Ireland...I can't seem to find an Irish supplier🥲
@MrCassbren shame, tbh I have heard that they are all much the same once you start getting into the specialist suppliers like morells etc. I have only ever used DIY like johnstones and farrow and ball etc. the difference is amazing
O I totally agree with you on that..for a top notch job you need to use a professional grade of material from the start to the finish...paint is something that I really focus on because let's face it, it's the only thing many people notice...details are lost on an awful lot of people 😅

"Promo SM"
Have you considered using a " ticking stick"?
Hi Dan. Can’t say I use it a lot but I do if it’s just for shapes with no scribe, also would have meant lots of drawing on boards and rubbing out as I used the same board for a house full of window boards, really good for parallelograms. In this instance I was more bothered by the side cheek scribes and the scribes on the back of the horns. It’s a great suggestion tho and I have an old systainer which I put scribing and measuring tools in which I take with me when quoting and installing. I will definitely cut a spare ticking stick and wack it in there. Thanks for watching
As I understand a fox wedge is in a blind mortise. But it's still wedged
Ah didn’t realise it was specifically for a blind mortice! I was only shown fox wedging a few times and it was always for different tasks but the history of it was never explained. Interesting❤ thanks for watching
It's always good to keep evolving techniques as times goes by. I like your honesty and the pencil sharpener to make the points on the draw bores. I was taught a rime/ditty when I was an apprentice regarding drilling draw bores which went " A 16th closer to the face brings the joint up into place" and I've always remembered that. Regarding Domino's for windows and doors, I think I may have posted on the previous video you did. For me the Domino is excellant for interior work but exterior Joinery needs to face all the weather we get so temperatures from -10 to +35, dry Summers to wet Winters etc. When you look at a 9" door bottom rail and someone puts 3 large domino's in it to hold it together they forget the spaces between the dominos which can only rely on glue to prevent water ingressing in from the front of the door through to the back of the door joint. I've seen a few external doors where the domino's have held in one side but the glue has failed and water passes through the joint. If you look at dowel jointed external doors which are pretty dire they do at least have a profile ans scribe joint running the length of the rail which does help a bit to prvent water ingress. Imagine over time an external doors in all weathers ,slamming shut etc and a floating tenon/Domino relying on glue and friction in my opinion just won't last more than a few years. Enough of my ramblings , keep up the good work, loving the swallows too. All the best Ade
Hi Ade Oh yes I remember! It was your comments that made me think if I bring it out again I better put a dowel in it😂 Funny enough I nearly put a scribe joint in this window but un till it was made I was unsure of how the domino would sit against a scribed piece but an afterwards I realised I could have jus used a spacer as the XL domino goes pretty deep. I do agree with you on the theory of what yu are saying and well believe you have seen failed doors especially on a 9inch bottom rail! As i have sold my morticer I guess I would uses the domino as a morticer and then a domino profile maker or round over bit in the spindle moulder to make large floating tenons to combat this. not sure on your thoughts there as there would be no gap then between the dominos. Anyway at least we both can enjoy the swallows! thanks so much for watching again☺ all the best Matt
@@Wattsjoinerybarn Hi Matt, Good to hear from you. I think what you suggest regarding wider Domino's so you get rid of the gaps would be a good idea ,especially if you no longer have a morticer. I know Whitehill tooling do a spindle cutter for making domino's so it may be worth checking out. Hope you're busy Matt and life is good. Keep us updated on the swallows and how many chicks they raise. All the best Ade 🙃
@AdrianSams cheers Ade. I actually made some smaller sapele dominos for some exposed domino drawer boxes a few years back and the round over was quite easy with a standard bit and 4 passes but no groove lines obviously. Tempted by the cutters so will try and please you with something like that if I do another external job. Might try and do a bird cam for the kids so could get some of that. Thanks again for the comments, plenty on my end hope the same for you. Matt
@@Wattsjoinerybarn Hi matt, I put some cameras in some nesting boxes I made. Amazing to see them build the nest and a pair of Blue tits actually decorated around the nest with coloured sheeps wool and flower petals. I'd never believed it until I saw it. Great for kids to see too but the downside is we had one year where the mother didn't come home and the chicks died one night. Nature is amazing and cruel at the same time. Plenty of work on so I'm making hay whilst the sun shines. 😊
@@AdrianSamsjust rewatched my video and realised I cut the bit out where the swallows whipped past my head to get out! Don’t know how! Gutted.
I'm so sorry for your loss. When our companions are taken from 6 hearts are devastated.
Yes 12 years with me every. Will never forget him. Thanks
Hello what sort of hours do you generally put in when you are working in the workshop .cheers
Hi mate. Tbh I have no set hours and have a busy schedule with my kids. It’s very rare for me to work weekends but I will do the odd late one(normally a Friday🤦🏻♂️) i used to work all hours but realised there is no point in doing it if you can’t have an early finish or day off mid week! Thanks for watching 😎
Thanks for sharing ....I would never have thought of mitre folding MDF..I've just started a job where I'm going to steal one of your ideas and use dominos for doing the scribes for alcove cabinets. I'm a bit the same as you in that I obsess about the finishes so much that I think I worry far too much, the customers never seem to appreciate the effort gone into the perfect finish..
Yeah that domino thing works well. Frustrates me that the size scale on the 500 is not the actual measure but once you know you know. I nearly always mitre fold mdf so have systems in my head to make it quick. Sounds like you will get it spot on. Thanks so much for watching
I think most people in this line of work agonise over the details that 9 times out of 10 the customer won't notice in a million years. The problem is we do see them and think everyone else will. Plus there's always that 1 in 10! I think you just have to find a balance that your happy with and crack on. Otherwise every job would take an age and we'd be living in a cardboard box 😂. At the end of the day if the customer is happy then that's all that matters. It's still something I struggle with and I'm certain it costs me money on every single job I do but we all have things we just can't let slide.
100% mate. Hope your well Matt
@@_nacnud_..we all have the urge to strive for excellence and to continue to be better than we were yesterday. I don't stress too much about the customer but I stress over the standards I would like to achieve. That said,I think that you are dead right and 9/10 never notice the things that the maker sees 😅😅
@@MrCassbren 100% agree. Which is why it's always annoying as most of the time it's something that you could have avoided with a bit better planning/focus etc
Great job Matt loved the design , long, med or short videos don’t matter just enjoy doing it , that’s the main thing ,
Thanks Graham. I appreciate that❤
