Best Mid-Length with classic feel but excellent performance - LoveMachine FM Surfboard Review
Wow!!! Here is a board that looks good and surfs even better. I found this board to be super fun and likely the best mid-length I've surfed so far. It does have me curious about how much shorter I can ride it. The board was perfect for a mid-length for my little self but the performance was so good, it has me thinking that it can also be ridden much shorter. This definitely goes in my top 10 of all boards so far.
IMPORTANT: the version I surfed is the Varial, which isn't available anymore. I will have to try and get my hands on a PU at some point to see the difference.

Another amazing board shaped by Duke AIPA. I was a huge fan on his Dark Twin and now I have added another. The board is fast, lively, and responsive which makes it great in both small and better waves. Disclaimer, I only had 2 or 3 cracks at a "better" wave but so my opinion is based on them. The board definitely lit up once the wave a either bigger or steeper. Surfer: 5'8" 145lbs | 172cm 66kg ...

Huge thank you to Paula for loaning me his brand new 5'2 Machadocado. I really appreciate your generosity and trust. In a nutshell, the surfboard is good under 2 foot and fair conditions. Firewire Sweet Potato 2 Surfboard Review
Hey man, just curious how the rails feel compared to the Seaside? Are they thick and round, or are they are more similar to the mashup, or even twinsman for that matter (not the tapered-step of those boards, but meaning just the thickness/roundness, which is less than the seaside, or say the Gremlin)
the rails are more thinned out than the Seasdie for sure. The mashup is likely a good comparison. I didn't think to compare them on that specific characteristic. But from what I remember, yes, thinner for sure than the seaside.
@@ThomyeSurfs ok, well this is great to hear, and also not so great because it makes me want one even more HAHAHA. Thanks
Where can I buy this ?
I bought it on Amazon but I don't "fully" recommend it anymore. I used it about 15 times as a double, and a handful of times as a single. With the double, if you were to carry 2 small boards, it fine. When I was using it, a friend of mine that rides a bigger board asked me to carry his so i doubled up. The weight of his longboard plus my little board, eventually made the aluminum stretch so the entire thing bent. I bent it back and it still works so not a big deal but, thought you should know. So, if you only carried smaller boards, it's worth it. Anyways, I got mine on amazon. amzn.to/3ZwFFaF
Great review! Have you gotten the chance to surf the black panda yet?
yes, working on the review now. I basically put it in the category as a Baked Potato or Sweet Potato. Durability of the FW's seem better, but the Black Panda has a value you can't beat.
Great review Thomye! Makes me wanna get one at 5.7 or 5.8. I'm on the fence as a 160/165 lbs surfer
I would say 5'7. The 5'6 felt a tad too big for me and I'm 145. at your weight, maybe the 5'7. unless you are super tall, then go 5'8. haha
Dumpster Dive OG was a flatter deck?
deck I'm not sure. I never had the OG so can't compare, sorry.
I was at the FireWire headquarters a few weeks ago. Around January they’re releasing a board by Stu Kenson. It’s a twinzer
that would be super interesting.
$1750 Australian for a board made in china by ppl who have never surfed or seen the ocean, yeh no thanks
dang, that is a steep price.
Your surfing is excellent. From your videos, it looks like you can rock any board😂 still a great review though
That was a great idea and an awesome execution. Thanks for sharing, Thomye!
thanks as always. I was stoked on the entire process. I am planning to get a few more shaped by some local shapers in the coming years.
Great video, you're making it look easy.
Well suited for the wave
Hmm... I have this board and it feels a little sticky to me, maybe cause I didn't put a pad on it and I don't get far enough back on the tail? I'll need to try it with a pad. Nice review, inspires me to take this board out more!
What length do you have? I've surfed the 6'9" and 7'8" and they feel very loose for the size.
@@ctrlb4213 the 6’9” . I’m only 5’8” and 150lbs and pretty much only ride shortboards or fishes before riding the FM
@@g35pm If you're use to riding shorter boards then an upper 6' twin can feel slow just cause of the wider turning radius. From my experience, the 6'9" FM doesn't grovel well despite what Thomye displays in the clips above. It doesn't have enough rail-line want to trim in really small waves, but it is also too long to pump/tick-tack easily either. Not sure if that relates to what you're experiencing or not. I found the board works best once it's at least stomach or chest high. Mileage may vary.
Could at least try to make it look like you had to put some effort in to your paddling?
Gorgeous resin tint and cool shape. I've tried several local pro shapers and have NEVER received the color(s)/design I asked for and/or just an effed up board, in general. I don't know why, but they just do whatever tf they want. The only custom that got everything right was a guy making boards out of his garage...and he had only shaped about 20 boards prior to mine!
Maybe it's the lost connection between the shaper and glasser. I remember a shaper that used a another shop to glass, there were so many in the process that to get an idea right was so difficult. Unless you had a pic, odds of getting the right color was slim to none. My worst was a custom when I was young, and back then, money mattered way more so getting it wrong would mean surfing it for 2 to 3 years. LOL I asked for bright red almost hot pink fade to white. I got blood red fade to pink. :( haha I was so happy that I told Promer to just pick a color and design he thought was cool. exceeded all my expectations.
Tip one: lose 50 pounds
You should try a smaller Revo Max, a great tweener size twin that fits what you’re describing. Own and love the mid 6 also, but the Revo max is a blast. Favorite board I’ve ever owned.
What size revo max did you get ?
Riding the 6’9, I’m 6’2 around 210-220. Thing is a blast.
@@MAXtoUKE Epic thanks, only reviews have been on smaller ones so be great to hear from you what you like about it and the waves you're liking it in. I'm thinking of the 6'9 as well to be a proper mid length rather than going the same volume as my short boards. I'm 200 lbs.
Yeah, the 6’9 is shaped very well and is refined like the smaller sizes- they didn’t cut any corners. For 200+ riders I feel like you should just go for a standard evo/Revo or an album plasmic for anything shorter for a similar outline/liters.
Awesome cheers - prefer it to the mid 6 ?
Awesome review! The FM (I've surfed the 6'9" and a 7'8" at this point) is one of the best feeling boards I've had under my feet to date. It isn't a board for everyone, but for where I'm at in my surfing it does wonders in the right conditions. The 7'8" had a shockingly low-end of wave range-I'm 140lbs and had some fun days when it was knee high and on shore. And when the waves picked up in size, it just would light up.
Damn, this is the best mid length surfing you have posted.I have to admit twinsers seem to work, everyone I know that's had one in past 30 years loved them. Personally I could never get by the aesthetics or the concept of the how they work - dumb bias. But, proof is in the pudding, you are ripping and cutting really tight arcs in absolute crap.....
I’ve ridden this board in its regular construction and the swing weight would be a problem for most people your size
i was curious about that. I was thinking that if I did get it in PU, I would need it shorter to compensate for the swing weight.
I just got a 6’6 mini Moe. How would you compare this FM to the mini Moe? I think I saw you had a short on the mini Moe but not a full review. I’m coming from a 7’4 Moe and what I’m tryna get used to is the wave entry. 6’6 catches waves and more maneuverable and not as clunky. I think this FM would be similar.
I only surfed the mini moe once but had a good session frontside. Backhand however, it lacked rive. Having said that, I did have it set up as a quad. I think a thruster or possibly a smaller 2+1, smaller front fins with a bigger back trailer would work best. My buddy owns the board, I'll have to ask if he would consider loaning it to me.
NICCCCCCEEEE NICCCCCCCEEEE!! ✌️😎✌️
You guys make it look so easy! I’m taking out my 7’2” next time! 🤙🏽
great video my friend. i love my midlength boards. for the last 3 years i rode the pyzel midlength crisis, a really good midlevel, catch all waves kinda board. but this year i bought the mid six mini 6'8, at 39 litres. this board is amazing, light and tough. it paddles great, has flow, but i can surf it like a shortboard. i have a thruster setup and that allows me to surf it a bit more foreward on steeper waves. it really works well in bigger waves. however i also surfed it in kneehigh waves and it blew me away. i am 5'10 and 155 pounds and it fits like a glove! recently i ordered the fcs2 power twin plus one fins and i am keen to feel the difference. keep on posting cool videos, thanx!
yeah, the ceiling on the Mid6 is a lot higher for sure. I am keen to try the shorter mini versions, but I don't know a single person that has one. maybe @harleyingleby will lend me one. 😂
Smooth surfing! I think it works for you. If you ever get a chance, try out a Vouch (eg Nuevo) or one of the Christenson mids or hybrids. And there are a few other similar brands out there The shapers are a class above
I have the 6’9”, glides and paddles great!
does the twinzer feel different to a twin 🤙
Not sure. I guess I could have remove the twinser but it was working so well. My understanding is it cleans up the water that actually hits the bigger fins
I think the effect of clean water is that there's no slipping. With my other twins pin I always feel I can't push too hard otherwise something breaks loose.
Another good one. Loved how you surfed it. The board looks 🔥
Looks like the twinzer allows it to break into the turn much better than similar sized boards. Nice.
Always nice to see reviews with a lot of surfing 🔥🔥 Very happy to see the HI Moe Mini on your list, really looking forward to seeing your review 🙏🙏 (I didn't find any video of this board surfed by someone else than Harley and he could rip on anything). Hope you will also get a mid6 mini.
Wish you would get your hands on a skindog ova 🙏
Ben Aipa was putting bevels on his some of this Stings back in the day, when he was shaping out of the Wave Crest Hawaii shop. Mid '70s. Just and extra you could ask for. Like the stepped bottom.
Spot on. I’m 66 and the 6’9” is about perfect for me. Glides into waves, forgiving and is really nimble as well. Would love to have those lefts! I’m a goofyfoot at a right point. Oh yeah, it goes backside too. Maybe a comparison with the Love Machine Cheet would be cool
I had a 6'4 Cheet... It's nothing like the FM. It's an egg shape and for some reason paddles terrible and is not very forgiving. Over all its a slow board. Went to the 6'6 FM and It's night and day. Rocket ship!
I would be very interested in a lovelace cheet review... And comparing it to the fm
Thanks!
Great review! How does this compare to the Seaside & Beyond? Do you like the Fm more and why? Another question have you ever tried surfing the Sunday 6'8 in head high/over head surf like Taylor Jensen. Sorry for all those questions I'm in the market for a mid length but there are so many choices!
the S&B went well, I remember the very angular cutbacks. With the tail and straighter rail line to the tail, it only makes sense. Not as forgiving and easy as the FM. Having said that, I need to get back on the S&B. When I reviewed it, it was the very first time I went from short board to mid. I feel like I've learned a lot so I may now have a more well rounded opinion of the S&B. Maybe things that felt too big would now feel better. Anyways, regarding the Sunday 6'8 in bigger surf, no, I have not taken it out on bigger days. I have a hard time duck diving it so often, if its too big, I'll just get caught inside and hurt my shoulders. The FM was 6 to 7 L less and duck dove decent. Enough for me to not loose too much ground. I'll have to try and surf the Sunday in similar waves to see how it goes.
@@ThomyeSurfs awesome I would like to hear your new feedback on the S&B. Maybe do a mid length comparison vid on the mid lengths you have been on. Like your vids keep em coming!
Awesome 🔥🔥🔥you look so confortable with this mid🔥🔥🔥great surfing Thomy👏👏👏
Yes, I would also be happy for a new review of the S&B (: @@leighrosendahl2734
Ripping! Those waves look fun! And the boards 😀🤙
More shredding!!!
Lovelace just won the stab shaping contest, I think he says in some interviews that when he started shaping he was shaping to make surfing easier as he was not technically the most advanced surfer. the fact that you described the board that way was awesome! you gotta reach out to him and see if you can review more of his designs. He's got a fish that gets ridden everywhere by his rider Will Aliotti. super sick.
Would be really interested to hear your thoughts on this compared to the Revo max once you’ve ridden it. I’m torn between the two and I’ve only ridden the Revo max so far and that was amazing!
the issue for me will be the length. I'll be riding the Max at 6'0 if I do get to ride it. A longer would be a good comparison but not sure I'll be able to get my hands on one.
Great review and awesome surfing! I love the fact you surf smaller waves as well as bigger. Do you have any thoughts on the CI M23? I feel like it may suit similar conditions/ give similar performance in the 6’8 or 7’0. Thanks again
Yeah the m23 is similar to something like the boss-up which the fence setups are more traditional, thruster and quad, which I think makes it probably sit in between the FM and the mid-6 so a little bit more performance not as much as the mid-6 but more than the FM. But the reason I love the FM is because of the fact that it gave me a really classic old school feel with the performance if that makes sense. I'm hoping to get on the boss up soon as well as the m23 but I don't really know anyone that has those boards.
@ thanks so much for your thoughts, I can get a m23 quite cheap and would be stoked if I can ride it like you are riding the FM. Failing that the FM is now definitely on my short list 🙌
tomo new twin 6'3 simply amazing get on one...
My buddy just bought the 60. He said he would let me borrow it so hoping to get a review of that at some point. 🤙
Would love to see you do the revo max in a mid-length size
Low level advance...what! 😂
Thomye, typo! The title for this video should be pt. 2
Thanks, just fixed it. :)
Nice footage! Would you recommend this board for an advanced-beginner looking to step down from 7'8 Egg shape for more radical surfing in poor, knee to shoulder height conditions? I've tried a friend's 6'1 Seaside (46.5L) and it felt really nice and easy to pop up and catch waves, even with bad positioning. It also held really well in onshore, choppy conditions and close-outs. But the 6'0 Cado (40.1L) is currently discounted at 700€ in my local shop (while Seaside and Sweet Potato are at 870€). Thanks!
the cost makes it seem worth it. at the longer length, the board will be stable enough, I think it would be a great option. if you take your weight and divide it by 5, it should give you the smallest volume you should be on at your stage of surfing. For example, I'm 145, so for my it would be 29L at the least. Bigger is better at this stage, the more time you spend on your feet, the more progression you will have. Start there and let me know.
@@ThomyeSurfsThanks a lot for your help! I will let you know as soon I grab one and test it a few times!
Love this review! As a heavy front footed surfer - in what order would you prefer - seaside, sweet potato or machadocado? Cheers!
for my waves, I would say Seaside, then Cado, then SP. If I surfed HB or Tresltes more, maybe the Cado first, then the seaside. Having said that, of the three, for the smallest days, I would prefer the SP for uber groveling. Take into consideration that I would be surfing the SP 4L more than my other boards since 5'2 is the shortest version they have. Hope that makes sense.
@ Thanks for the response! If you don’t mind me asking one more question - what do you think feels less skatey and more stable. Cado or Seaside? Cheers!!
@@Tehwhsyeg77 Seaside, the swallow tail bites a little bit, just enough to make the board feel like it is on tracks. But the quad makes it loose when you need it. most versatile of the bunch
Man I want this board now!! Seems like it would be so fun on solid days at uppers or t street
When you are a 90 lb rat you can surf shit like that!
have you tried the xero fusion ? also how do you like the DD2 compared to the RNF 96 ?
I haven't tried the Xero Fusion yet. I was just in a shop that had one and it felt amazing. But it was 1 size too big for me. :( It was in the new HiFi 3.0 construction and it reminded me of the Sharpeye FT in carbon that I have. I'm really interested in this board. As for the DD2 compared to RNF96, I haven't ridden the RNF96 so it is hard for me to say but based on design, the DD2 seems to be more performance oriented and the RNF96 being more grovel. I good indicator of this is width to height ratio. I tested the DD2 in a 5'7 which was only 19.25" wide. The RNF96 if I were to surf it at about the same liters, would be a 5'4 but the same width. it is taking the same amount of foam and putting it in a board 3" shorter. Anyways, it's a minimal difference. I think if your waves are bigger, then the DD2 is a better option. If the wave less than head high and medium to soft, then RNF96. Again, this is a guess since I haven't tried the RNF yet.
great video! Learnt a lot from it. Thank you so much
