CI Bobby Quad Surfboard Review in Micro Sized Waves

  • Got a chance to test out the Bobby Quad. It was tiny during my test window but I think it was a blessing in disguise. The board went extremely well and I had a blast. With its wide tail and flattish rocker, the board proved to be a fantastic groveler. It can be a good board for beginners if sized up and a great board for high end intermediate to advanced. For some intermediate surfers that size their boards bigger, it might seem too tight and boggy. I have read and heard mixed reviews but the common theme with those that dislike teh board seems to be that they are oversized.
    Personally, I think it has to do with their fins. The NVS/AIPA pivots might have helped the situation.

    When you say people who don’t like it bought too big, can you give an example of what the right sizing is according to you?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There is no easy answer to this. It would depend on your skill level and what you are trying to achieve. If you already have one and don't like it, you think it is too tight and doesn't respond, it is either too big or you are running the wrong fins. When I borrowed this board for the demo, they gave me some raked back al merrick fins but they gave me 2 right rear fins so I couldn't use it. I had to use my own fins. I recommend the NVS AIPA Sequencer for 1 of two type of conditions. Small like this video or punchy with a tight pocket. The horseman or any other raked back fins for longer walls.
      Regarding the pivot, I would say the Sequencers are special. they not only are more upright and most pivot fins, they are bigger at the base and middle but have a very small tip. Also, the rear fins are smaller. As a quad, they have a massive vacant space between the front and rear fins making them super loose and easy to swivel. Key for a bigger tail or board.
      To help with sizing, I'm 145 and rode the 27.1 L, if I divide that the ratio is .18897. To ride it the same ratio as me, take your weight and multiply that number. Example, if you weigh 175 (x.18897=) you should ride, 33.07L. If you skill level isn't quite there, use a slightly higher multiplier. .2 to .22. To help keep the board size down, get the spine-tek which will float a tad better and help with catching wave. Another complicated matter is the surfers height and weight. If you are tall and skinny, this board works in your favor. if you are short and stalky, the stock boards might end up being too long for you. You should get it custom instead.
      Anyways, again, no easy answer. I wish I could give you one. but too many factors. Another huge factor that no one thinks about is that one's skill level isn't across the board. Looking at me for instance, my paddling is high intermediate, my positioning is advanced, my surfing generally is low advanced, my down the line tick tacking, high advanced, my airs, beginner, LOL. Sometimes, my paddling screws up my sizing if I use it to pick a board. Hope that makes sense. I just don't want to give you a generic answer. I would need to have a bunch of information to really answer this accurately.

    Great review as always! Got a question for you when you get time. I was out of the water for about a year due to an ankle injury. When I was able to start surfing again I got a 6'8" Sunday (thanks to your reviews) and it really helped me get my confidence and skill back. One of my favorite boards I've ever owned. Now that I am progressing more I am looking to get back on a board that leans more high performance and can handle both mushy and punchy beach breaks. The Bobby Quad seems like it would be fun but just curious to hear what you'd recommend coming from a Sunday? For context I'm 6'4" @ 180lbs. I surf around lower jetties and Bolsa. I'd say I'm a mid to upper end intermediate surfer. I really appreciate any advice you might have and thanks for all the amazing reviews you do!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      good thing is you got height on your side. The Mashup and BQ are similar in that they are both flatter boards. BQ had a wider tail so might do better on the weaker waves with the Mashup just edging on the punchier stuff. although neither are really meant for punchy waves in my opinion. Bobby himself would disprove my statement for sure but for us average folk, the flatness and curvier outline make these boards better in softer waves. Since we surf about the same place, Bolsa , you know how it is there. Both boards are good choices.
      Having said that, I guess the first thing you have to do is figure out where you want to land as far as volume. The 6'8 Sunday is 48L so let's say you wanted to be around 40L, give are take. Earlier I said you had height on your side. The good thing is, both the Mashup and BQ should be ridden shorter than your height. doesn't mean it won't surf bigger but to get the most out of performance, shorter is better.
      volume to height, both boards are super similar. i think the 6'0's are both 38 liters. the 6'2's are around 41 to 42. I can confidently recommend either of these but one thing to keep in mind is that the Mashup is helium and the BQ comes in EPS (spinetek) and PU. if you do decide on the BQ, make sure it is the spinetek just so you get a bit more buoyancy. Mind you, that the Sunday is also helium so 48L on that board floats more like 50 to 52.
      Again, this is just a general recommendation. I don't know much else about fitness and paddle, etc. you have to sort of decide on the volume. with that said, if you are mid to upper int, I would definitely say challenge yourself. go with the 6' over the 6'2. if the waves suck, get back on the Sunday. surf the smaller board in bigger waves for now and let your fitness catch up.
      Lastly, i'm 5'8 and surfed the 5'4 Mashup and BQ. so 4" shorter than my height. you surfing the 6'0 would be roughly the same, I think a natural inclination would be to be scared of going too low in volume and end up on the 6'2 or 6'4. Which would work as well but if you want to up the performance game, take the chance. one thing is for sure, try to keep both those board shorter than your height and at max, at your height.

    Another excellent review Thomye. I would love your thoughts on a comparison between the Booby Quad and the Twice Baked that you previously reviewed. Looking at your footage of the two boards, it looks like the BQ has a lot more get up and go off the start. This is surprising given that the TB has 3L more volume at the same length. I’m waiting for my Baked Potato to die before buying a replacement. The BP was my all time favorite SoCal grovel board. I assumed I would go for the TB until the BQ came out. I’m very intrigued especially given that I live in SB around the corner from Bobby. I would love your thoughts on which board you prefer and why. If you had the time, you could quite easily make a direct comparison video with footage you already have. 😜 just a thought. Keep up the great work. You make it so easy for me because we are same size, weight, and approx age.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that's a hard one. mostly cuz I would not put them in the same category of boards. The BQ is more like my Mashup in terms of volume to length and performance that I can get out of it. The TB is like you mention, 3L more and although I love it, it is slugish by way of width and the extra volume. The difference is, my TB would have caught those waves and not need me to work as hard. So for someone that is low intermediate, say learning to pump and get up and go, TB is a better choice. For someone high intermediate, that has the rough skills for pumping, tick tacking, etc. The BQ would help refine those skills.
      The benefit the TB has is that it has more vol to length. So someone that needs 31L could buy a 5'3 TB and still skate around. Better for short stocky dudes. But a 31L BQ is quite long. It would then need more effort to push around. For me, since I was surfing the BQ at 5'4, I was able to move it around easily. Having said that, the 5'1 TB might be very similar to the 5'4 BQ in get up and go. But losing the rail length would make the TB feel too short.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fox.709 I've been asked this quite a bit, they are similar in liters, width with the only real different being, the mashup hides some of the volume in the thickness while the BQ puts it in the width of the nose and tail, but keeps it relatively thin.
      I haven't tried surfing my mashup in such small waves. I will have to in order to give them a good comparison. I mentioned that my Mashup was faster with the Knox but to be completely fair, the wave on the Mashup was also bigger on average.
      Hopefully I'll get a chance, but I have a few boards on loan so I need to surf them first when I get the chance. :)

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      to keep it brief, I would say the BQ for smaller waves, the HK for bigger waves. The HK is fun up front, better paddle, easy to catch waves, but it is all business in the back. Narrow tail sinks in slower, softer, weaker waves. Unless you are advanced and you push hard on your tail constantly (and I mean constantly), the BQ is just a much easier board to ride.

    Really interesting one. I voted for it on IG poll compared to G-Skate and although on paper the G-Skate should be a better board I'm still convinced the Bobby Quad "grovels" better, or at least you look better on it, if that makes sense.
    Just out of curiosity, how does the Bobby Quad compares to the Firewire Sweet Potato? Spec wise they don't look that different so I think they're kinda in the same category. Also would be interesting to try the Endorfins on Bobby Quad for small/average days.

      Thanks. if I were to compare the BQ and SP at the same volume, say 31 Liters since that is the SP's smallest version. Here is what you get:
      SP - 5'2 x 21 7/16" x 2 5/16" @ 31L
      BQ - 5'7 x 20" x 2 9/16" @ 32.3L
      You will see a 5" difference in height. I surfed the 5'4 BQ at 27.1L. At the smaller size and volume, the BQ for me had great performance available. When I surfed the 5'2 SP last year, although it caught waves with very little effort, much better than the BQ, I was only able to do certain types of maneuvers (at least in the 2 hrs that I had it for the demo. I'm certain I could have gotten better on it after some time). The board is thick and wide making it kind of clunky. Not in a bad way but just simple physics. At my weight, an SP at 29L would be perfect, maybe 5' tall vs 5'2.
      If I surfed the two sizes above at the similar volume, I think the SP would end up being a better groveler and possibly a better performer. Better groveler because of the width and mroe of the volume being under my chest. Performer becasue, a 5'7 BQ is now too long. The nose and tail are full and wide so the extra 5" of swing weight would be a lot of weight. Cuz i'm 5'8, my stance isn't that wide and no matter the board, I pretty much stand in the same exact place of all boards, back 30". On the SP, I'll have roughly 32" of board in front of me, the BQ, i'll have 37" of board.
      Anyways, I would not put these two boards in the same category. SP is a much better groveler for catching waves. The is more of a groveler similar to the Mashup and has a good deal of performance built in.

      BQ awesome, board works fantastic and I would put it at about the same as the BQ. The BQ has a slightly wider tail so likely goes a bit better in softer waves bit only by an fraction. not even sure I'd be able to tell. Having said that, if you have the Seaside (helium) and the dom2 (helium), and you like those boards, the Mashup is literally the "mashup" of those two boards. It might be the holy trinity of boards. You would go from one to the other with little to no adjustment between the three.
      Again, BQ is awesome but now you are dealing with a different construction. might be a slight bit more adjustment. You can't go wrong with either to be honest but looking at it as logically as possible, the Mashup seems like a better fit in the quiver. If you do go BQ, do the spinetek eps version. At least then, you will have a relatively similar buoyancy.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      that is a tough one. after surfing this board and also talking to others, i've concluded that those that don't like it are those who like slightly larger performance boards. Basically someone who might like the Sharpeye Inferno 72 oversized. A board like that oversized even though bigger will be loose and more performance oriented. Jumping onto a bigger BQ makes the board seem very tight and stiff. the reason for this is, a longer BQ might make you want to surf forward so then your back foot are in front of the fins. this makes teh board feel tight.
      From what I can tell, from those I've spoken with, this board works great when ridden shorter than your height. doing the math and trying to get the board to work as a custom might not work well for you. I think the rails might get to thick or the board might get too wide.
      this may all be conjecture though. it's possible that a bigger one might work for you that is longer than your height since I'm not exactly sure of what feel you might be looking for. Can you demo it? Sorry but it is just really hard to make recommendations when there are so many variables that go into it.

      @@ThomyeSurfs Thanks so much for the detailed reply! You are on-point in terms foot placement on these boards. I tend to need a slightly wider stance than desired due to their extra length, and I move my back foot a lot between trimming vs turning.
      I never thought of trying an oversized shortboard, but the increased foam in the tail (vs the nose) at a higher volume might be what I need.
      If going custom on the BQ, I would have to balance length vs volume...thinking 5'6 x 20 1/8 x 2 11/16 at ~33L with spine tek could work. But I'll take your advice and try to demo a 5'7 or 5'8. Thanks again!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@khasenst one other thing to consider is that if your other boards are PU, then the spinetek actually will be more buoyant so you could get 1L less and still have as good a float, maybe even 1.5 to 2L actually. Just a thought.

      I knew that question was coming. It does have the same type of response. I would say a tad better because it has less rocker. With the NB2, it either needed a slightly punchier wave or size but the BQ, as you saw from the video, needed way less. Also, my NB2 was 5'7 (likely too tall for me) but the 5'7 and the BQ 5'4 were about the same volume. I think a tad more in the BQ which also helps as a grovel in two way. 1, more volume but 2, more concentrated volume under the chest.
      Having said that, the slight angle of the tail plus the break swallow made a big difference is how much water it pushed. The BQ was just easier to do everything. But, I figure as the waves get bigger and punchier, the NB2 will perform much better, easier to control.

      in what way are you struggling. Surfing, paddling, catching waves? I only ask cuz ultimately it depends on what you are looking to achieve. I love my seaside for 2 to 5 ft softer waves. Although my seasides work in smaller 1' waves, the issue is that the wide point is really forward so tick tacking around isn't as easy as it was with the BQ. The BQ is more similar to the Mashup to be honest. let me know what you are experiencing with the Seaside.

    • @Sailnboard
      @Sailnboard 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Paddling n getting into waves esp fatter n flatter waves as I feel it pushes too much water with wide point so fwd vs my Cymatic which pulls water under my chest. When my paddling n takeoff aren’t the issue the board has great squirt and I love how skatey it is and I love doing roundhouses on it vs Cymatic which I think the tail is a little wide. I don’t have consistently good sessions on Seaside vs Cymatic and SF2

    How would you rate this compared to the Seaside?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say they are similar but the BQ is more like the Mashup in terms of volume to height. The seaside is a tad shorter and wider relative to volume so it is meant to grovel a fraction better. Grovel aside, both the Mashup and BQ are then meant to perform better. Which is why I can tick tack it around easily and still get maneuvers.
      I think as soon as I get done filming a few of the borrowed boards, I'll try comparing it to the Seaside and Mashup in similar conditions.
      Here is a video of my 5'2 seaside in similar small conditions like the BQ. th-cam.com/video/YABTa0w_cz0/w-d-xo.html
      This seaside is only 24.6L, it is the Machado dims. it is smaller than the normal stock 5'2". I remember struggling on this size so this day was the day that inspired me to get the 5'3 Seaside. Which comes in at 28.2L. If I compared the 5'3 SS to the 5'4 BQ, the SS is a fraction better at groveling, cuz it is wider, has a tad more volume but the volume is crammed into a smaller length.
      But I did lose a fraction of responsiveness and performance when I went from teh 5'2 SS to the 5'3 SS. Basically the extra 4L make the board a tad clunky but my life got easier. My wave count went way up and it was worth the small loss in performance for the big gain in grovel.
      Anyways, hope that made sense. The BQ is closer to the Mashup but leans slightly towards the Seaside. I'll have to do a chart or something in my next video where I can compare them. The hard part is, grovel better doesn't mean surf better so sometimes it gets confusing. Grovel better is objective while Surf better is subjective, making it even more confusing. :(

      What's the situation with the no brainer? is it too loose? too tight? how big is the board? I don't want to just recommend any set of fins I like since it has to fit your board and needs.
