A retrospective review and analysis of Sniper Elite 5 developed by Rebellion that serves as an eye-opener to the shortcomings that plague this latest installment in the franchise. While the game attempts to immerse players, it often falls short. This review aims to dissect not just the surface-level issues, but also the deeper flaws that impact its overall appeal. Whether it's the regression of...

Assassin's Creed (2007) - The Start of Something Great (Retrospective)
มุมมอง 9242 ปีที่แล้ว
A review-style analysis and retrospective of Assassin's Creed (2007) by Ubisoft. This retrospective contains spoilers for the whole game, and all of my thoughts are coming from 15 years of perspective on the Assassin’s Creed formula. We’ll start with a brief history of the game’s development, we’ll then analyse the story, gameplay and world-building that turned this game into a franchise and ha...
One thing I did enjoy playing SE5 is that the invasion mechanic really rewards SUPER sneaky, like solid snake level, gameplay. This means most enemy living players just give up because you aren't tripping lines of sight of AI and just enjoyed pecking at the invaders with a welrod and skurry off until I get off the blip. Then rinse and repeat.
I did really well on Landing Force. Plenty of sniping opportunities.
amazing video!
Thank you!!
I was thinking that!! I'm split on the idea of a game set in Japan, but Cold War could be such a cool setting. The ziplines especially could be a great start to some urban traversal.
As much as I enjoyed this game, I was deeply disappointed that we didn't get to fight the Rat tank at the end, real missed opportunity after all that buildup. Sure it might have been crazy, but having to duck, weave and sneak through the rocky desert as the Rat drives around, dodging its massive arsenal and taking potshots at the few precious weak points and having to run up occasionally for a strategic satchel charge placement could have made for a great final boss, and test the player on everything they've learned.
Especially since we've had to do exactly that for some of the smaller tanks!
It's ok, I sold it after I finished it. I play these on the hardest setting, 3 and 4 is the best. All the levels felt bland in this game and the AI felt like a downgrade, 4 has the best AI. I think the 3rd game is very underrated, 4 is the best but 3 is also solid, I replay 3 and 4 about once a year. Your right about the lack of sniping, only a few locations have big open fields, but even then, the maps lack good veridicality.
I having a hard time playing this game due to its graphics. I want to ask from a storypoint perspective, should i start the dark force series with dark force 2 since that is when kyle story starts?
DF2 is very obviously a predecessor to the Jedi games, whereas with DF1 it's just sort of, slightly reminiscent. I would go DF2
I own 3 and 4, also have the zombie games but they get old faster. I pre ordered 5 but sold it after finishing it, it wasn't bad but it didn't hook me. I like 3 and 4 about the same. The 4th game is bigger and the AI is better on the hardest settings, but 3 is still really good and worth owning, AI is also fine enough to enjoy. The environments are different enough in both to the point that they don't feel repetitive owning both.
Which is really where I think the strength of the series lies- traveling to all the key battlefields around the world, and being immersed in the environment. Atleast for me!
Just finished the original version on the force engine, never thought a 90s game would satisfy me as much, the hexagonal room on the imperial base gave me the most rewarding feeling in the world, considering i did it with no walkthrough 😂
No patch?? Braaag about it whydoncha 😂😂
Can you turn off those x ray kill cams? They're cool the first 10 timed but I don't see myself enjoying for the 20th over and over.
You sure can. In my case I just increase the speed of them, but on higher difficulties I like to turn them off completely as I find it disrupts the flow a little too much.
Still enjoying SE5 over here, but there's another small gripe I have which is that the enemy gun noises in SE5 sound puny compared to the ones in SE4. I miss the loud punch of the K98 when I'm getting shot at.
100%, it's like hearing a bullet whiz past your head.
Great video
Thank you!
Having played 4 first I did not enjoy the lagging controls & dumb AI. The animation is very good
I noticed the controls too after going back to collect some footage, I didn't notice when I went from v2 to 3 but it's pretty noticable to me now
A bit off-topic, but have you ever tried any of the Sniper: Ghost Warrior games at all?
No! But I've watched my friends play. I know it's far more of a sandbox than a narrative experience though. Once I'm through some of the heavy hitters on my list I definitely plan to take a look at it :)
Cool cool, I have Contracts 2 but I haven't played it a lot yet. Looking forward to some content down the line from you about those games!@@Analog_Nightmare
There's the zombie army games
I like this game
Why did they change the button for shoulder swap from R3 to triangle? That's my only complaint so far lol
I wonder if it was so you could swap between 3rd person and iron sights easier?
Yeah I'm thinking the addition of first-person ADS is probably it
Great game, just gets better.
Which do you prefer this or III?
For the narrative, 2, but gameplay I think I like the open maps a bit better in 3! How about you?
@@Analog_Nightmare I really like V2, I Like the drab grey depressing surroundings that fit the war infested streets perfectly and as you mention the story telling which is great without it needing to be silent or worse still bad acting, unless you like that sort of thing, in which case Rouge Warrior is hilarious, so bad it's good if you've not played it. As for Elite III, I started it and found it tooo bright, you could throw a party in that desert! I've also not had the same eagerness to carry on playing it as I did with the V2, so it's been sat there, I was going to play them in order but I'd rather just play V2 again. I guess I need to give it more of a chance, but that's just it it's not pulling me in like the previous game.
Officer Nick Brick was my main man in 1997 👍 awesome retrospective pal
Great video man keep em coming
Thank you!! I hope to get another AC video in after I cover Splinter Cell :)
This was a superb essay, thoroughly enjoyed it. Really appreciate the amount of time and effort went into its compilation, thank you. Immediate Sub and Like.
Thank you for the kind words! So pleased you enjoyed it, let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see from me!
If the first game had allowed us to stealth a little more, it could have been one of the best games I've ever played. Atmosphere, unpredictability of artificial intelligence (on Sniper Elite difficulty), tense environment, tense music... There are many things in the first game that I could not find in other sniper elite games.
se5=dogshit
I always found it weird how the exit wounds are basically goatse
Have you played the game Dusk? A game that is great fun
I have!! Reminded me a lot of a mix between Thief and Amnesia 😁
Sniper Elite 4 is great
I enjoy the Sniper Elite games
This is great help. Thank you! I'm trying to put together a chronological ordered playthrough of World War II levels in video games and this helps with the history. Thank you
Glad I could help!
Cool to have these videos in one compilation. It gives the whole series a better context. Btw. who is that balding sweaty guy who is clapping like a maniac in front of the Microsoft logo? I have no idea why, but he completely cracks me up. Also, "Frenchie" in V, Marie Chevalier has actually been a SE character since V2. She's been a DLC skin in every game. V was the first time she actually made an appearance. 😎 "Listen very carefully, I will say thiz ønly wuence!"
THE ULTIMATE Bonas Level should be a V2 spinoff where you Sniper Duel Vassili Zaitsev! And it should be a true peer duel with all your video game advantages turned off
We need more sniper duels in general. That was the best part of SE3
Amazing!!
should i watch this or play wolfensttein the new order?
Why not both? 🤔
good job chie (i will finish when you have a vid about wolfenstein the new order)

PERFECT TIMING!!! With WWII in real time starting a year early and Russkies at Berlin now... 6 year build up to replay... V2!!!!!!!!!! And the original to I suppose
Fantastic to see a collection of your work in one place. Can't wait to see what's coming next!! Great work :D
Absolutely love it!
🎉🎉
To all the viewers who have been with me since the beginning, consider this a victory lap. With every video the quality, research and passion increased, and I didn't realize how evident it was until putting this compilation together. All of your amazing comments, critiques, and compliments contributed to this undertaking and I couldn't ask for a better group of nerds to share this with!!
Hey! Who you calling a nerd!?!? **Does nerd things**
Thank you for such a comprehensive survey of this incredible series - one which has always punched above its weight.
Alright so a thought just came to me. It's a war crime to boobytrap corpses. So to keep Karl's name off a list somewhere, just don't trap corpses. Knock them out, then trap them.
I didn't even consider this... It is a little fucked up huh?
@@Analog_Nightmare, absolutely. Unfortunately, i tried it and the game doesn't allow for it. Missed opportunity, Rebellion.
I'm enjoying this game. It's not gonna take 50hrs + to complete and the objectives in the open world are cool coz you can pick and choose. What does it say that I put down MGS5 in favour of this game? Quality sniping!
Also the amount of time you can put into a "perfect run" feels much shorter than in MGS. More content/satisfaction for your time.
Starting this comment before finishing the video and continuing writing as I progress. First off, just want to say that I have loved all of your Sniper Elite retrospective videos so far. I've been making my way through the games, and just recently put the finishing touches on my Sniper Elite 4 playthrough. Second, wanted to comment about a "true jedi" run. Genuinely one of the most fun and engaging experiences I've had playing a game in a very long time. I usually try to 100% games anyway, but I wasn't sure about it with Sniper Elite at first. But then, after finishing the campaign and DLC, something got into me and I decided that I would sit down, go through every level, collect every collectible, complete every challenge, and complete any Steam achievements related to the campaign and DLC missions. I can say, that without a shadow of a doubt, it was worth it. The fun I had was beyond what I was expecting. I always knew that the levels were very open ended, and I'm very much the type of player that enjoys taking the time to map out a level, figure out where things are, points of interest, and the such as. It really shows how much time and effort Rebellion put into this game and how replayable the levels are. It had never been so clear to me that they designed the game with these challenges in mind, and you're kind of SUPPOSED to replay the levels and complete the challenges, or at least it significantly increased the enjoyability for me. It forced me to play in ways that I was NOT comfortable, and by doing so, made it feel that much more rewarding when I completed the challenge or achievement. I also wanted to comment about what you said about playing this in the dark or in winter. That's actually exactly what I did, and I find myself having very specific memories of playing Sniper Elite 4, in my basement room with all the lights off, it was cold and I had a small space heater on just to keep the room warm enough to tolerate. It may not be ideal, but I know exactly what you meant by suggesting you play the game in that setting. In conclusion, I agree with you comments about this game just making the franchise that much better. I started playing 4 immediately after playing through 3, and it was a little jarring at first to get used to, but I did the same thing from 2 to 3, so I figured there would be hurdles to jump over. As I played more and more, I began to also realize how much the system had improved. The weapons, the enemies and their AI, the world I was in, the objectives, the storytelling, and most importantly the fun I was having. Having not played 5 yet, 4 is definitely my favorite game in the franchise so far and one of my favorite games I have ever played. I'm looking forward to playing through Sniper Elite 5 and watching your videos on that game. Also, Karl is so fucking cool
Karl is so fucking cool. Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! Maybe that's why I find 5 feels a little out of place, the jump from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 to 4 was so massive that it makes 4 to 5 feel... Middling?
I love Sniper Elite 5 but I do understand the arguments you make here. I think the word that comes to mind for SE5 is "why?". Why did they not add a path through the invisible wall areas that gives you another pathway or make it into a minefield that you can carefully navigate or something. Why did they get rid of some of Karls arsenal like bouncing bettys and trip wires? Why is non-lethal even in a game like this? And why oh why do they block off some of the coolest looking vantage points. Like in Atlantic Wall, why is there not an opening at the top of that giant billboard looking thing you have to blow up that allows you to snipe into the open fields adjacent to it?
And that's exactly my point. There are issues that feel like they have simpler, more synergistic solutions that got missed. Still an enjoyable game, but with some glaring design flaws.
Love your humor. Gonna check out your SE5 retrospective next
Thank you! Would love to hear what you think 😁
@@Analog_Nightmare I just started SE4 again and one of the biggest problems for me is the wind. Its way too exaggerated and drifts my bullets even when trees and flags are barely blowing and the sun is shining.
I recommend playing this game and any other sniper elite on authentic. Makes the game way more immersive
That's how I'm going through them now- that friggin reload gets me everytime lol
