Hi, I've grisport Rampage boots and Crusaders. After 3 years of abuse the lining gave out in them but ive repaired this with gtx repair tape. I've never had wet feet in them, I wax them with grangers g wax. The sole has loads of life left in them despite the abuse they have had. Great review I've subscribed.
Thank you, I love my boots too. Like you I've never had wet feet and they're tough!
That looks like such a beautiful hike and you had amazing weather also, thanks for sharing the video, we've subscribed :) look forward to seeing more of your content in the future Walking Devon 🙂
Thank you, it's a lovely walk I do often. So glad you enjoyed it too!
Too much of you and not enough of the boots. Hardly saw them.
Thanks for the feedback, point noted.
Great filming and narration - thank you ! How long does it take to walk from Beer to Branscome please - thank you
Thank you, it's about 2 1/2 miles from Beer seafront to Branscombe seafront. Depending on your pace and stopping to take in the scenery I would say allow about 90 minutes. Thanks for watching!
A lovely video. Thank you. Enjoyed the abundance of flowers.
@@dawnhallier9172 So happy you liked it Dawn, June is a great month for the flowers.
Great video. Lovely views.
Thank you Andy, it's a lovely section of the coast.
Great video Rob of a local walk to me. Thanks for sharing. I love the OS app, it’s such good value for money for route planning and route inspiration too 👍
Thank you Sarah, one of my favourite local walks. It's a nice alternative to walking the coast path route. Good to see you use OS too!
In 2018 walked from Lime Kiln to Passaford - Peak hill then took the coast path over Peak Hill, past High Peak, through Ladram, Otterton and back to the car park - covered much of the same paths you did. It is indeed a long walk (for me) and I can't do it now. Thanks for sharing Rob, it brought back some lovely memories. I will say 'Hi' if I see you on the trail.
That is a long walk Sam but a lovely on at that! So glad you enjoyed the video and please do say Hi if you see me.
Wonderful video Rob. Thank you for taking us along on your walk.
Thanks for coming along!
Great video Rob
Thank you Dave, glad you liked it!
Great walk, some lovely photography as well as video. There is a bug going round, both my exeter great nephews had it, one for well over a week! Hope you are fully recovered soon, excited to see the Ladram Bay video.
Oh that's really interesting Andy, I was on the bus in Exeter on the way back from the Fingle bridge video. Maybe it was that, thanks for the info!
total pro ,👋
Thank you.
Great video and a really cool idea to replicate the photos. Perhaps go back with a chainsaw, or in winter so no leaves on the trees. Looking forward to more of these videos.
Good idea to going back in winter Andy, I've got loads more to recreate around East Devon later in the year. Maybe I'll have better luck with those although I thought I did pretty well with the ones I did get. I do enjoy this challenge though, it really makes the walk more interesting for me. Thanks for your kind words.
I got lost a lot of times when i was a kids on Woodbury common even even got bitten by an adder when I was 10 lol some good memories
Were you alright after getting bitten? I know children can be affected quite badly by an adder bite. In all my walks I have yet to encounter an adder but they are quite well camouflaged.
@@WalkingDevon I spent a few weeks in hospital and then a few months in a wheelchair as my leg swelled up I cycled home 🤣 from the reservoir area by the bunkers i was only 10 at the time a long time ago tho back think 🤔 was about 97 /98 😂 changed since I played up there
How awful for you, that's a long time to be out of action at that age.
@@WalkingDevon I love it to be honest I was out of school 🤣 for a few week then I had to go 😭 But in a wheelchair I was kind of a naughty kid back then 🤣 and did like school 😅🤣 I could run out of school lol 😂 the over kids in school was amazed as Not even my parents knew about adder snake being poisonous at the time they ended up coming out because there was a fire open Woodbury Common 2 weeks before
Dartmoor is a beautiful place that can turn into a very scary place , depending on the weather . I had a decent brand new tent destroyed on Dartmoor ! Great memories . Your choice of light weight stove though is now illegal ! 'As of October 2023, hexamine fuel tablets have been banned in the UK' ....... You can apply for an annual licence at a cost of around 40 quid if you can satisfy the authorities that you are going to make things that go bang suddenly . Shame , hexamine tablet cooked toast will be enjoyed again never again ! They did smell a bit , even in transport they needed to be sealed up well , but the burning fumes put me off using them back in the day . I would usually carry some tablets as a backup stove , cum emergency wood fire lighter though . No more
@@davidyendoll5903 Sorry to hear about your tent, I'm camping on Dartmoor as I'm typing this! It's very windy as I'm pretty high up but the tent I'm using has endured worse before. Yes I only found out recently that hexamine has been banned, I did go back to my Trangia but one night on the moors it took so long to heat some water when I wanted it quickly that I got the Soto Amicus now. It's so quick and copes with the wind well. I'm hoping the wind will die down once the sun sets else I'm not going to get much sleep. But I do have a good phone signal, which is rare! Thanks for watching and your comment. 🙂
Really enjoyed watching 😊
That's great to hear, thanks for watching!
I think after watching this for a second time, I also will also drop the poncho and foam mat experiment that I had ready to try. Just brought a very worn British Army DPM Basha measuring 8 ft x 7 ft for £25. I took on board what you said about keeping dry. My Poncho is only 6’ 9” x 5’. So 8 ft has to beat 6’ 9” any day.
Yes that Basha is a much better size. I picked up the Rab Siltarp 1 after this, which is a bit smaller than your Basha but it kept me nice and dry on a windy and rainy night on the moor. I also got the Alpkit Hunka bivy bag which has saved me a bit more weight. If you're a back sleeper the foam mat might be enough but as I'm a side sleeper... it's a big no for me.
Great video Rob! Fantastic quality camera footage and very clear sound. A real pleasure to watch ☺️
Thank you Darren, still getting used to it but really happy with the upgrade from my phone. Thanks for your support!
Great stuff😊
Nice,Devon not changed a lot really ,just too many groccles now 😅😅
No not too much, just much more trees!
Super colour, sound and steady pic content thanks from where I grew up in 1960'& 70's.Is Donkey sanctuary still there?Look forward to Dartmoor vlog especially if you start/finish around Bovey Tracy where my school friend lived 😅
Yes the Donkey sanctuary still exists, it's got quite big now. Bovey is coming soonish!
Looks lovely Rob !
Thank you Adrian, hope you're well.
Good to see you about Rob Magic
Thank you Pully, are you coming down for Folk Week?
@@WalkingDevon Yes be in the Volly staying up at the Fringe Festival up Salcomb Burrows Farm 😄
Lovely walk and footage, beautiful place.
Glad you enjoyed it Sam.
That is one of my favourite places. You get peregrines and ravens along there too.
It might have been a Peregrine. I'm not very good at identifying birds but I am learning. Thanks for watching.
You have put in so much research and work to produce these photographs Rob. The proliferation of trees is interesting, whether it has anything to do with the flooding that Devon suffered in the 1950s I don’t know. But it’s gratifying to see that not quite every square inch of our country is yet built on.
Thank you, yes it was indeed a lot of work behind the scenes for this one!
The clarity and the vibrancy of the colours are so crisp with this new camera.
It's a bit easier to use as well, still need some practice with it to get the best out of it.
Another great video. A really good idea, well thought through and well executed. It is great to see so many more trees and less erosion than I expected. I wonder what difference you'd see on the Jurassic coast? Even the last 10 years will have changed a lot, let alone 100. Thanks for doing this. Looking forward to the next part.
Thank you Andy, really glad you liked, it It took some planning! It's a nice way to introduce a bit of photography with out it being a tutorial, if you get my drift. I'll certainly be doing more and the Jurassic coast might just feature, watch this space!
Great video and so well put together. Nice to meet you at berry head too!
Thank you so much, it was lovely to meet you. I had such a nice time down there, I must go back!
That must have been a lovely project to do. Fascinating to see the changes and how access points have changed and landscape differences. 50 miles over six days, brilliant - I can't do that any more.
Very tiring but very fun too. Still got plenty to do as I'm 19/54 pictures so far! Thanks for watching Sam.
Excellent video. Love this walk.
Thank you, I agree!
Coming from Sidmouth, always thought Dawlish bit of a dumb but looks quite nice on this vlog😅
Thank you, I really like Dawlish but I do try to show the best of the places I visit. It's my photographic background kicking in!
Love the kit reviews Rob, when you find a genuine replacement for the Vango I’d love to know. Keep us posted!! Great to meet you, keep up the good work, you’re a natural 😉
Thank you Steve, It was lovely to meet you today. Check out the OEX Bobcat 1 Person Tent, it's the closest I've seen so far. Safe travels!
That backpack looks truly dreadful!!
Why? I've used it a number of times now, it's very comfortable, well made and fits me perfectly.
Great research of history of the area. Thanks for this. Subscribed as we loved our time there. Looking forward to returning by our yacht this summer after 11 years.
Thank you, it's a wonderful place and I can't wait to go back again. You'll have a lovely time when you visit again in the summer.
I’ve had many bad experiences with inflatable mats. I’ve used 3 and they always had punctures. Now I use two mats. One like yours and another one with a sort of raised honeycombed pattern which is a bit thicker. It’s fine. Not luxurious but at least they don’t go flat during the night and leave me with nothing. In the future, I’m going to experiment with an inflatable inside a Bivvy or inside a sleeping bag. Which inflatable to choose is the question. None of them seem reliable, no matter what you pay.
I had the same experience as you, I've got through so many airbeds through puncturing. I have considered doubling up foam pads, I might try it one night. I've tried putting the airbed inside the bivvy/sleeping bag in the past, it can feel a bit constricting if the bags aren't that big. I didn't like it myself. Recently I used a closed cell foam pad underneath my airbed with my bivvy bag and sleeping bag on top. It worked really well. But any pad will puncture at some point, it's a lottery as to when it will happen. Just get one that's warm and comfortable!
@@WalkingDevon If you find a solution, there are hundreds of us keen to hear about it. My next endeavour is to camp with my wife, so I’m looking to get a Vango Banshee 300, with a footprint and add a mat, then some kind of airbed and then a sleeping bag. The only weak point is the inflatable. Even when I used an inflatable before, it was inside a tent and I checked underneath before pitching. Even then, I patched each mat 5 or 6 times before giving up. I’m not spending big money for a leaky bag again,so I’m going to try an army surplus one when I go next. But I’ll never rely on an inflatable as my only sleeping system again. Better luck next time. I subscribed now, so I’ll be able to watch.
@@WalkingDevon I dug out the mat I was telling you about: Thermarest Ridgerest is the name. I used it with a simple roll mat (cheap) and it was comfortable. I’m considering getting another insulated mat from LOMO (Scotland) who do a range of great stuff and great prices. Decathlon also have a lot of options.
The Thermarest pad you mention is made from closed cell foam like the one I used in my most recent video (you might want to watch it). I had a piece cut to size at a fraction of the price of backpacking stores from efoam.co.uk. I also got a piece of Plastazote from the same place that's 2x1m and I'll use as a footprint for my Vango tent. You can get any thickness you like but I went with the 3mm. I feel that the 3mm is enough to protect an airbed in most conditions and adds warmth that a normal footprint wont..
@@WalkingDevon Thank you! I found mine in a charity shop and I liked it in combination with another ordinary cheap roll mat (it doesn’t even have a name) and I didn’t do any research on it because the name didn’t mean anything to me (I should pay more attention) but thanks for the info about your gear. I’ll look those up. I apologise if I’m taking up too much of your time by writing so often. I don’t know the proper protocol and I’m worried that I may be pestering you. In my defence, I’m always looking to learn from people because this stuff interests me.
Good Vlogg Rob thumbs up lol hey and now a man of fashion love it 😂
Glad you enjoyed it Pully, thanks for watching!
Spent many a night on dartmoor ehen I was in the paras
Here I am complaining of a 14kg backpack weight, I bet you'd have loved one that light in the Paras.
@@WalkingDevon 😆
Hi, like the weight of those tents but as an older hiker I'm worried about being able to get under it and then into a sleeping bag.
Yeah it's very low, it was my first pitch though and while editing the video I did wonder if I brought the sides in a little and lengthened the pole if it would make it easier to get into. I'll give it a go next time and without the inner but I didn't find it easy myself but like you, I liked the weight of it.
Hi Rob, I know this is an obvious comment, but as someone who through age (66) and health no longer does any serious walking I’m always amazed by the nifty gear available today: the wee folding cup for example and those camp slip on shoes.
Absolutely Mark, what is available today has come leaps and bounds since I first ever went camping!
Excellent u now have the bird app.
What a great video. Brilliant idea. And that'll be East Hill Strip you were on. I notice in the video footage you picked up on Carex Pendula. Its spreading everywhere in the valley and beyond...you will have noticed in the last 2 weeks the 'pendulums' have grown which will have the seed blown everywhere.I feel like im on a one man mission to bring it to peoples attention as a plant that needs managing. Great app tips too. Really enjoy your videos.
Glad you liked it Dan! It was East Hill, I walked from Gittisham to Sidmouth and detoured around Core Copse. I didn't know about the grass, I'm at the start of my botanical journey but I also see far too much Himalayan Balsam around East Devon, especially on the Otter between Otterton and Budleigh.
Love this video, Rob. I've got the Seek and BirdNET apps on my phone - I will add the Merlin app too. I only remembered 4 names 😢
I's say 4 is pretty good, you got more than me!
This was a novel idea Rob. Spring is obviously well advanced down in Devon. I wish I could say the same here in eastern Scotland. Thank you for the birdsong app tip, which I’ve already downloaded.
Glad you enjoyed the idea and found the app useful, spring will be with you soon!
@@WalkingDevon I can only hope as we’ve still got the central heating on!
Lovely video, a sunset walk around the garrison is the perfect prelude to dinner and a few beers in The Mermaid. The Scillies are my favourite place, I try to get out there most summers. I was lucky enough to grow up in Cornwall and my dad was a light house keeper, on both the Bishop and Round Island, so our childhood family summer holidays were always a couple of weeks in the Scillies.
Thank you Nick, how wonderful to have enjoyed it as a child too! I think you never really leave the Isles as you always end up returning. I can't wait for my next stay.
Jam first, proper job.
Glad you approve.
Many thx for posting.Spent many a summer picnicking, swimming at beer as my parents lived in Sidmouth in the 1960&70's 😊
Thank you Andrew, so glad enjoyed it and brought back happy memories.
Rob, there are many many YT videos out there that would have helped you get the best out of this type of camping! Clearly you seemed to have missed them😂 likewise your WWll cooking system😂 but all said and done, as long as you enjoyed it and stayed safe that’s all that matters! Regards from deepest Dorset 👍
Ahh, but I wanted to try it for myself! But seriously I just wanted to see if I could get away without an airbed... apparently not lol.
Hi Rob, welcome back!
Thank you Adrian.
Sorry for your loss Rob
Thank you David.
