Looks like a good outing. Just did a similar hike in the Canadian Rockies with my son in late October. 650 metres of elevation gain in 7 km to get to the lake. Not as much as your hike but still got out attention as most of it was in the last 2.5 km. It was great, a storm was coming in, strong winds were knocking us about as we moved along the exposed trail. Temperature was just above freezing on the way up and then dipped below overnight and in the morning. We loved it, so late in the season we had the trail to ourselves and no mosquitos. Gave him some much wanted adventure as well as a couple good stories. Most importantly outdoor experience points were added.
