    Greetings from Kentucky in the US Howard. I actually purchased a Pleurothallis dressleri that arrived in the post today. I ordered it from an orchid grower in Florida. I think I got a good deal on the price as it was $65.00 US dollars. Others I looked at were around $119.00 US dollars. Mine looks slightly smaller than yours. Like yours mine is mounted on cork bark with moss on it. I re-watched this video and I'm excited to try to get this mico-mini orchid to flower. Thanks for the inspiration. James

    Thank you so much for this video. I’m late to the party only finding out about box caterpillars this week when a relative showed me what was happening to my 8 box balls and picked out caterpillars to show me. I was horrified. I’ve immediately started picking them out by hand while I wait for delivery of the product you mention. It should be delivered today. If you don’t mind, I have two questions (1) am I too late in the year to spray? It’s September (2024) now but I can see the caterpillars wriggling around inside the plants and (2) should I take a dustpan and brush and gently sweep off the dead brown box leaves before spraying. Thank you so much, and for your brilliantly enlightening video.

      Yes I have a small fan high up which is one all the time just to move the air around gently. I also use another one low down if needed in winter when any water on the foliage is taking a long time to evapourate.

    I have recently acquired this orchid, about a week ago, it is a very young plant, thank goodness it is a very healthy specimen so I have hope in growing it successfully. Your orchid is truly magnificent!! Hopefully I can achieve the same results, alas, patience and perseverance will be the order of the day!! I am going to try to repot the plant today and then hopefully it will grow successfully and become a beautiful plant like yours. Thank you for sharing, I love the greenhouse, small, compact and it does the job for what is needed. Have a super day.

    Howard any tricks or ideas to encourage the Pleurothallis cypripedioides to bloom? I imported mine over two years ago and it’s grown into nice size plant. About twice as big as the specimen you have. It had flower spikes and still does they’re brown and I think dead but no flowers! 😭 I’ve tried cooler temps more light/less light because I thought maybe it was just too warm. My conditions aren’t very warm to begin with except in summer. I’m stumped. Thank youuuu!

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's hard for me to answer. If it gows well that doesn't make a lot of sense. Do you have other pleurothallid type orchids that grow and flower well? This plant isn't very different. Is the humidity high enough? Mine is seldom less than about 70% and I mist the plant with rainwater most days. Could it be too much feed? Mine gets a dose at about 500 ms about once a week just the same as my other orchids. I you make a change to the growing environment you sometimes need to wait quite a while to see it it helps. Lastly some people are now calling it a Stelis.

    Hi, love your channel. Very informative. Today i wanted to ask you about your hangers. I am looking at them and wondering if you make them yourself or maybe purchase them. If you make them yourself, it would be interesting if you could share this information. I'm from Venezuela, have a gian dendrobium and need to hang it from the ceiling. I have a wire basket but want to transplant it like you do -- in a separate pot and then place it in the hanging wire basket. But i need to make the wire hanger!

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Judy, Glad you like my channel. I make my hangers using galvanised or plastic coated wire and a pair of pliers. I originally copied one that came with a vanda a long time ago. You need a selection of wire sizes according to the size of plant/pot. For the biggest plants I have also used the common chain link hangers that come with wire hanging baskets.

    • @judymoraga5536
      @judymoraga5536 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for responding. I'm going to look for this type of coated wire as i did not even know this existed! But I found it on Amazon so i'll have that option. My noid dendrobium is blood red with a velvety lip. It blooms constantly! It currently has a one spike with 11 flowers but is also growing her next cane! I have a giant vanda too with an of shoot which has two long roots which I need to cut off (first time) and place in its own little basket. I am hesitating as i know this will be traumatic both for me and my plant! So i need to learn and master wire bending skills! @@HowardRice

    Dear Howard may you give me advices on pleurothallis pterophora she's my most loved miniature and possibly my preferred orchid ever I've just recently been gifted by a keiki from Kopf nursery which has been the only place where I found the species in Europe after Englad quit the continent. I would love to ask you if the collector which gave you the divisions actually was growing the species in pot cause the little keiki i have now is in spagh in a very small pot but my question is which may be best cultured to a specimen size if you knows how your donor was growing it tonthe size to give you those huge divisions and if you lately mounted them cause u are blessed by your conservatory cool perfect weather for her ❤ 🌹 last year I lost 5 mounts I did bought from the same nursery cause the heat was possibly too warm for them in the summer and now I'm keeping my little baby in a refrigerated room where I am too cause outside it's soooo hot in central Italy we cannot cope with it 😂❤

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The person who very kindly gave me a division was growing his in a pot. I dont know what the mix was but from seing his greenhouse I think his conditions were probably a bit warmer and drier than mine. Mine are on tree fern mounts. I think plain bark might not retain sufficient moisture even in my greenhouse although, interestingly, the one on a smaller piece of tree fern has done better than one on a larger piece which I think, in my humid conditions, stays a bit too moist for too long. I'm very keen on growing mounted as I think they look natural but next time I'm going to try small clear pots just with sphagnum kept damp or moist but never soggy. I think this is probably the best starting point especially if you can't rely on constant high humidity but I would just do whatever you have found works for this type of orchid in the past.

    Hi Howard I have been able to smell the p.corningiana time ago when I had in my collection and have been amazed by the kind of perfume it emitted difficult to describe fruity but powerful instead phalaenopsis sumatrana that has a similar flower actually smells musky I do believe you have stobartiana and honghenesis on the same mount the green one being stobartiana, your violacea coerulea is so beautiful right now it's becoming much more poular the indigo form but I actually prefer the natural form that you have but I find difficult to find the natural form lately and I had to buy the Norton cross indigo despite I really prefer the delicacy of the natural violacea coerulea btw do you have any schillerianas they are gorgeous and rose fragrant if you like that scent ❤

      I don't have schilleriana. I'd love to grow it but I'm absolutely NOT buying any more warm growing phals. Interesting what you say about the honghenensis. It appears to be quite possible although, logically, it would be strange to have a mixture of seedlings of different species together in th e same batch when they were being deflasked and mounted back in a nursery somewhere in Asia.

    What is hanging from your plant in that packet?

      That's a packet of predatory mites to help combat thrips. Also have them for spider mite. They seem to be working which is great.
