Fascinating miniatures, they are awesome! Not the easiest to grow either, it is impressive that they are all looking so good. I also really like the foliage on that angraecum distichum.

this is the most amazing video i’ve ever stumbled across! your aura is so calming, i could watch you for HOURS!! this video is incredibly informative and i love being able to experience your passion for orchids. thank you for this knowledge & video!!
Greetings from Kentucky in the US Howard. I actually purchased a Pleurothallis dressleri that arrived in the post today. I ordered it from an orchid grower in Florida. I think I got a good deal on the price as it was $65.00 US dollars. Others I looked at were around $119.00 US dollars. Mine looks slightly smaller than yours. Like yours mine is mounted on cork bark with moss on it. I re-watched this video and I'm excited to try to get this mico-mini orchid to flower. Thanks for the inspiration. James
You are welcome. As a starting point I think normal pleurothallid growing conditions are fine but with high humidity/regular misting so they never get too dry. I spray mine regularly with rainwater and as a result I think they might be a bit starved of nutrients because they currently look a bit pale and grow slowly. I'm still experimenting!
@@HowardRice It's morning here right now so I'm getting ready to water my mounts. I use distilled water because it never rains in Kentucky during the summers. I mix a little seaweed extract and Cal-Mag in the water once a week for my mounts. I found an online orchid nursery called Tarzane Group and been buying a bunch of mini mounted orchids. I really enjoy these plants.
Thank you Howard. I’m just fascinated by your greenhouse and orchid setups. I live in SW Florida and grow my orchids outdoors year round in a screened garden room. I’ve learned so much from you about growing bare root orchids. I was unfamiliar with virgin cork. The moss is a wonderful addition. Mosses are so beautiful. I’m inspired to try this. I have used driftwood and fern bark, but I believe this will be a much better option. I look forward to your future posts. I’ve watched this one multiple times. Please do share as much as you like.

Hello Howard. No, I am not familiar with Orchid House Ft. Lauder Dale but I just subscribed. Thank you. We’ve actually had record lows this winter and a few of my orchids and Hoya are showing some slight issues from the cold, low 40s F I put my hurricane shutters down but will be getting a heater for the future. All in all though, our winters are generally mild. Many of my orchids are blooming or in spike thanks to the cold snaps. Thank you for the recommendation.

Hi Howard. I really love your channel. I love your passion and knowledge. I’m a novice orchid grower. I grow my orchids on my balcony in Sydney. They can stay there all year except the Phalaenopsis. Sydney at the moment is around 28 degrees and around 70 to 90 % humidity. The orchids are loving it but I’m not!

@@HowardRice I have 3 aerangis fastuosa blooming every year and 4 aerangis punctata which I have purchased not very long time ago. All are alive so far but have not bloomed yet. I have all of them on cork mounts with the dry sphagnum moss.

Wow, what a wonderful video. I have very similar growing condition, would love to grow some miniatures ,you may have started a new venture. Please make these little beauties a regular part of your coverage.👌😊✅
Many thanks for this episode. What exquisite miniatures. It is interesting to learn about gorse wood for mounting. Do you think an old woody broom could be used too? I might try both. Congratulations on reaching 500 viewers as well. Your channel is a favourite of mine. I learn a great deal.
Thanks Helen. As far as I can tell, so far, there are lots of alternatives to cork oak. A friend of mine has used willow bark, I've also used chunky pieces of durable looking bark from the woodpile without being sure what they were. I don't know if there is something about gorse that makes it special but results so far have been encouraging with miniature species with fine roots. I think it's well worth experimenting with all sorts of substrates to see what works.
I love your videos, I'm always learning about new and interesting species of orchid. I'd love to see how you repot your orchids sometime, like how you have your phalaenopsis corningiana in a cork tube, how did you initially fix it to the tube? Do you provide different medium mixture for your phalaenopsis vs. oncidiums vs. dendrobiums, etc.?
Hi Hang, Thanks for your nice comment. I can only manage to produce a video every few weeks but I have lots of ideas for the future and yours is a good suggestion.
there are also several miniature versions of dendobriums. They look really cool. I saw them near around traditional plant market here in west indonesia (humidity is high enough so people just put them near the road or pratically anywhere). Most of beautiful/advanced hybrids are from thailand, however. Kinda cheap.
I got my first mounted orchids two weeks ago from J&L in Connecticut. Gastrochilus japonicus (East Asia) - Fragrant Bulbophyllum barbigerum (Western/Central Africa) Foul Fragrance
Good choices. The Bulbophyllum, like many in this genus, has the most amazing flower construction. I have a couple of similar weirdness - saltatorium and lemniscatoides. Quite amazing.
Good beautiful morning to you Howard. It’s raining here in london. I was hoping some advice. I’ve recently cracked the phalaenopsis orchid (the hard way). I was wondering if you had any recommendations of similar care that I can branch out to. My humidity averages 60-65% in a bedroom full of tropical plants. I’m lucky to have a north and a south facing windows. And I’m most familiar with aroids. I find your videos so relaxing and most importantly informative. It was inevitable that I’d become addicted.
I assume you are asking what other orchids to consider? My recommendation, for the time being, would be to stick with Phalaenopsis but start exploring the huge range of beautiful species and hybrids some of which have very attractive foliage whilst others have a wonderful scent. Phalaenopsis are extremely well suited to growing indoors. The other even more exotic orchid you might consider would be a Vanda. I know there are lots of people who grow them very successfully indoors. I don't have any personal experience of growing indoors but there are lots of other orchid TH-camrs who do.
Thank you so much for this very informative video Howard! I’ve just received my very first Pleurothallis dressleri and I too am both completely enchanted by it and terrified I’ll kill it! I have a tank which stays up at 90-100% humidity, temps of approx 66F/74F evening) to 80F/85F (daytime) with a small fan for air circulation. I tend to put new acquisitions in this tank so they can recover from being shipped and eventually move them over to a larger plant cabinet/greenhouse situation. I’ve only had the plant about a week and it seems okay so far. My question is this…I know that this particular orchid enjoys being pretty moist but do you think having standing water on the leaves will harm it at all? It’s often a bit hit or miss with even plants which are supposed to enjoy lots of moisture and humidity as to whether they enjoy water on foliage or if it will melt them/turn them yellow. Thank you again so very much for sharing your knowledge and stunning collection with us! I very much appreciate any tips or opinions on my query regarding this plant should you have the time. Cheers😌🌱
Whether or not it is the best treatment I'm not sure but the leaves on mine are usually dry by evening. Although if the moss looks a bit too dry I might give them a light misting in the evening as well. This usually applies in warm summer waether of winter when the heating is on. But, as you say it's a nerve wracking business. Best of luck. Let me know how you get on. I'm sure I could do better with mine than I do. Mine grow quite well but the foliage tends to be a bit pale. Whether this is too much light or they need more feeding I'm just not sure.
@@HowardRice lol….fair enough! I’ll play it by ear then and hope I don’t torture it to death. It sounds like you’re still fairly new to this particular plant in comparison to the others. Hi Howard, just found your channel and am looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. Just one question - did you suggest gorse bark as an alternative to cork? Subtitles are coming up as goose! 😂 I have a very small collection, that tend to concentrate on orchids from the Himalayas with a few 'gifts' thrown in. I have also started an intermediate terrarium and started to grow a few miniatures so found this video very interesting. Don't mind you talking all day at all!
Hi Pat. Welcome! Yes, gorse. Ulex europaeus - a common wild shrub in Western Europe growing on acid/sandy soils. So far, it seems promising for some of my miniatures.
amazing orchids! Just got into miniature orchids 1 years ago and i cant get enough of them! Any tips on the lepantes teliopogonflora? I got it like 2/3 months ago and it does not seem to make any progress. I got it in a box with good a good light source and a ton of other orchids which are doing fine. But the teliopogonflora not as much. the humidity is usually around 80-90 percent
Sounds like you've got about the right conditions. Mine more or less stands still over winter but should start growing again soon. I can't really say anything to help you except to suggest that you search for other you tube videos that have it so as to pick up as many tips as possible.
Another wonderful video! Thank you. I’m just wondering where you managed to find gorse wood in the UK? I’ve been searching for a few months but haven’t been able to find a supplier
It grows abundantly on acid heathland soils. I just helped myself to some scrubby overgrown small branches on the edge of woodland. It's not something that would be sold cemmercially.
I've mostly bought my orchids from specialist orchid mail order suppliers, from orchid shows and from swaps with other local growers in our local orchid society. I wouldn't say most of them have been expensive.
Hey, I absolutely love the plant collection, I was wondering where i can buy some of the above mentioned mini orchids - I would love to have them in a terrarium I am making. Hope you can help Thank you
I don't know where you live but here in the UK there is Spicesotic Plants, Burnham Nurseries (both mail order) and Writhlington School (who sell plants on Etsy).
I've seen different sorts of bark and wood in aquarium shops. They should be fine. Cork oak bark is the one that most people use. It is often available in pet shops for people who have reptiles.
Oh I forgot to say you'll need a small quantity of sphagnum moss which is often useful to help retain some moisture and give the plants time to get established on a mount. There are lots of 'how to' videos on mounting orchids. Where you intend to grow them (how humid) plays a big part in how to go about it.
I like minis but don't really have the room for it (intermediate to warm/hot) I got myself a Panmorphia Minutalis (pleurothalid family) it gave me one almost invisible flower, really tiny, do you have any tips on reblooming it.
Wow such a wonderful collection. 😻. I have a paludarium (on my channel) could I trouble you to suggest a couple of miniature orchids for my setup? Thanks either way 😊
It's difficult for me to advise. There are a lot or mail order orchid specialists in the US but I have no personal experience of any of them. It is not economic to buy from the US if you live in the UK. If there is an Orchid Society near where you live it would be well worth joining so as to meet other enthusiasts and find out where they get plants from. Also Orchid Shows are a one of the best ways to buy if you can get to one. Also worth watching unboxing orchid videos from the North America. Hope that helps.
before the UK left the EU I was very pleased with orchids purchased from Schwerter, Akerne Orchids and Großräschener. But now we can't buy from abroad economically.
I don't know where you live but I have bought from Ebay sellers who specialise in orchids and from specialist growers at orchid shows or by post. I've also swapped plants with other enthusiasts who are members of our local orchid society. E bay is a good starting point regardless of where you live. But you may have to be very patient before you eventually find a rare orchid that you desperately want.
Good afternoon Howard. I noticed this black algae deposit on yours Pleurothalis dressleri mount. I get this too, on some mounts, especially with live moss. So, my question is: do you try to remove it or do you leave it as it is? Thank you, M.
Good question. From memory it only develops on cork bark and some mounts get it a lot whilst others not at all. I think a lack of air movement and the resulting continual wetness encourages it. I don't think it does any harm to the plants but it looks unsightly so I scrape it away where possible and even use a small tootbrush to clean the surface of the cork where there aren't any roots. I'm also tending to try and re-mount plants more frequently. A fresh mount with nice clean cork and a small amount of some healthy moss often seems to give them a real boost. (This doesn't ofcourse work plants with bigger roots that really lock on to their mount). Hope that helps.
You can talk about as many miniatures as you like, because i love them! Thanks for posting such interesting content.
Thankyou. I'll try to include miniatures a bit more often.

Oh I forgot to say you'll need a small quantity of sphagnum moss which is often useful to help retain some moisture and give the plants time to get established on a mount. There are lots of 'how to' videos on mounting orchids. Where you intend to grow them (how humid) plays a big part in how to go about it.
Thanks Howard.
Love the miniatures Howard. Where do you order these from in UK?
Hi Nikhil, Since we left the EU I buy a lot of my new orchids from the very nice people at Spicesotic
Thanks either way 😊
Restrepias are inexpensive and good to start with
This is fantastic! I live in the U.S., where would I find miniature orchids to purchase to grow? Thank you!
Nice video :-) i love smal Orchids too:-) u got a good webbshop to Recommend?
before the UK left the EU I was very pleased with orchids purchased from Schwerter, Akerne Orchids and Großräschener. But now we can't buy from abroad economically.
Where do you buy these rare mini orchids? I can't find them anywhere
@@HowardRice thank you
Cain bridge personality isn’t that bad
considering i see moss growing , humidity must be high in the green house
Yes. The humidity is normally at least 70 or 80% and higher at night.
Hi can you please do one on platystele Beatrice miniature orchid if you happen to have it ...
Hi Brandy,
Sorry, I don't have that species but I do have P. orectoglossa and have just filmed it for episode 29 which might be of interest?
Hi Howard do you sell this these or where could I buy them
No, sorry, I don't sell orchids. I bought my Pluerothallis dressleri from Spicesotic Plants here in the UK but it is very rarely available.
