What about the Ultima games? And I’m sure there’s many more. You’ve essentially stopped at around “E.” There’s many more letters that I imagine have overlapping titles between the two consoles.
I had a C64 at my dad’s and an NES at my mom’s growing up. As the years went by, my dad’s house became the C64, MS-DOS/Windows386, & Sega (Genesis, Saturn, & Dreamcast) household while my mom’s remained the Nintendo household (NES, SNES, N64, & GameCube). A small perk to having divorced parents, I guess.
I was hoping to see Archon in this video which I took for numbers & A titles. Dang.
Thanatos is a conversion of a Spectrum game. You don't have to burn the ships or really kill much at all. The idea is to fly to the right. IIRC you'll find a princess strung up between two rocks. Burn the ropes, she'll hop on and you continue on until eventually you reach these big gates. I can't remember what happens next 🙂
Loved the entire Phantasie trilogy.
This version was just titled Oregon, it had minimal graphics and pre-dates the 1985 version titled The Oregon Trail with enhanced graphics and gameplay
“Somebody get this freaking duck away from me!” -Strong Bad 🥊
The sega ninja gaiden is so bare bones, jump up on a floating platform and walk right. The nes Ninja Gaiden has perfect controls, complex deep levels, awsome music and amazing challenge. There is no comparison here.
Its all about the gameplay, and the nes is hands down much much more fun to play. I do like some of the sega games. But i dont like the weird bright colors they use, it kinda reminds me of a kids color pencil colors
I subscribed are any of you proud of me
I am!
Had CompuServ on a Vic 20 back in '83. There was a couple BBS's I could connect to. They were TRS-80's. Being 16 years old I didn't really know what to do with it though.
Atari: 360 drift stick? Challenge accepted!
I used to love this game. Watching this walk through is wonderful. I actually got all the gemstones but I don't think I made it out of caves 😅
Nice! 👊🏻
This game got me playing for hours. Nice view back!
Thank you sir! 👊🏻
I never beat this game in elementary school. Lol
My hobby is repairing these old machines, so I have both an Atari 1200XL and a Commodore 64, but I'm almost completely unfamiliar with both of them from a user perspective. So it's good to see content like this.
still have my amiga500..i still play this...lots of happy memories for me using the amiga in my youth,
Same here!

Not seen most of these, I wonder how many got a release in the UK? Arkanoid was written in the UK and published by Imagine. I had that and at the time would've had paddles but weirdly i can't remember using them for anything but a submarine cartridge from Commodore which I can't remember the name of. Apple Cider Spider looks fun I'll have to check that out. Your spider looks like a hand puppet 🙂 The Apple II was the first home computer I ever saw as my dad had one for business. I thought all computers would look like that. And then i saw my friends zx81. Not quite the same 🙂
So I got my kids a 3d printer for Xmas and it reminded me of when my mom got printer and print shop. I told the kids about it three not impressed.
It's tough to impress kids with old-school tech!
I'm not a Colecovision expert but it seems to me they could have done a better job than that.
Agree!
Song playing at the background sounds like Madonna - True Blue ❤😂
On "Ghostbusters" I have not had the chance to compare them side-by-side like this. But as a past 800XL player in my teens, the monitor we used made the picture quality better than what I see here. Then again, it has been quite a number of years.
I loved The Print Shop as soon as I got it! Had the VIC 1525 printer and made all kinds of cards and banners. Printmaster and The Newsroom were also great programs for this.
It's interesting - the ones where it's a tie or the Atari version was superior show that the system was capable of a lot, so the bad ones are a little baffling. I wonder why some of the games were so much worse on the Atari?
Just seems to me the real differences are the code quality and effort put into these ports, rather than actual hardware differences.
Absolutely agree! The effort and creativity from the developers often made all the difference, especially with the limitations of the time.
Although it was basic, the C64 was pretty powerful.
Absolutely, the C64 packed a lot of power for its time, and it’s incredible what people were able to create with it!
Yes!! Brings back memories. Also remember printing a bunch of Garfield "comics" with a comic making program. I recall the expensice color ink cartridges -- that never changes!
Those were the days! Printing Garfield comics must have been a blast, even with those pricey cartridges. Some things never change!
Looks like you found a door for your monitor! Happy New Year!
I've always had my door, I believe it is Ashton who is missing a door on his 1702. Happy New Year!
@FloppyDeepDive Yup, you're right. I watch so many of you fellow enthusiasts, I forgot who it was. Keep them coming! Happy New Year!
Right there with you. I watch them too.
The modern equivalent to this are dudes that 3D print silly boxes to put gift cards and cash in.
True, it’s all about creativity with the tools of the time! 3D printing has definitely taken that to a whole new level.
I absolutely loved my Atari 800xl.The first games I bought were all cartridge based arcade games and then I obtained more and more cassette games but overtime I got more envious of owners of the Commodore 64 andZX Spectrum because loads and loads of original games were being churned out for these machines whilst the odd game was drip fed out for the Atari so eventually I sold my 800xl and bought a C64 and never looked back though generally I think comparing the same games for both machines, I think the Atari had the edge, like with the game Drop zone for instance but sonically the C64 had more capabilities but I do love both machines and if I had a games room they’d be both hooked up to a tv or monitor.
Both systems have their unique charm, and I totally get the envy-C64’s software library was hard to ignore! It’s great that you experienced the best of both worlds. Dropzone is such a standout on the Atari, but C64’s sound capabilities were indeed next-level.
Don't use that intro. Not good for photosensitivity.
I understand - I'll keep that in mind for future videos! Thanks for letting me know.
I still have my Ultima 3 Map. :) It's a good idea to use it as a mat for the C64. Merry Christmas. :D
I thought so! Happy New Year!
Ii wish they made a 24 pin color dot matrix for modern PC's so I could do some retro photo printing with it.
I hear you on that one. There’s something undeniably unique about the aesthetic of a classic dot-matrix print, even in the age of high-resolution printing.
@FloppyDeepDive I remember my Grandfather took a photo of my Grandmother and they put it on a T-Shirt at T-Shirt + in the mall in the mid 80's. The tranfer print was a dit matrix print out on heat transfer paper. I'd love to print some of my current 18 and higher Megapixel prints from my Canon cameras on color dot matrix. I think they would look so cool.
That would be cool!
This is the greatest of all Atari commercials! Atari was at their peak in 1981!
Agree 👍🏻
Everytime my 801, 802 or the Seikoshas work its like: OMG THAT NOISE 😍😍😍👍👍👍
Haha yes! Nothing beats that satisfying sound of the print head zipping back and forth. Those 80x models were absolute workhorses - the mechanical symphony of a dot matrix in action never gets old! Thumbs up for keeping these classics running. They just don't make printers with this much personality anymore.
I remember when it was an UPGRADE to go from 9pin to 24 pin dot matrix
Oh man, that quality jump was incredible right? The resolution and print speed difference between 9-pin and 24-pin was like night and day. Finally being able to get that near letter-quality output made such a huge difference for professional documents. Those were exciting times in printer tech!
Meowy retrospective christmas 🎁🎄🎅 and a happy retrospective meow year 2025 from Prince Arttu 😺 and Princess Pamela 😻❤️🌹 of Cat 🐈 Kingdom of Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮. COMMODORE 64 FOREVER 😺👍🕹️! Press play on tape LOAD LOAD"*",8,1 LOAD"$",8 AMIGA FOREVER 😺👍🕹️! Insert disk 💾 2
Those classic LOAD commands bring back such great memories! Nothing like that magical sound of a C64 tape drive loading up your favorite game. And yes - Amiga forever indeed! The upgrade from swapping countless tapes on the C64 to that sweet Amiga floppy disk system was mind-blowing back in the day. Thanks for the meowy retrospective wishes - Kiitos from a fellow retro enthusiast! 🎮👍
I remember the print shop lol 😝 that so cool
Print Shop was absolutely legendary! Making those banners and greeting cards felt like magic back then. The best part was that satisfying dot matrix printer sound as it slowly revealed your creation line by line. Such a groundbreaking program for its time!
@ I agree 100% there is a magical feel to it you just don’t get much anymore
@ is this your set up and equipment or did you find video of this?
This is my setup. I had it since I was a kid.
@@FloppyDeepDive that’s awesome my 1st pc was a Hewlett-Packard and played the heck out of prince of Persia on it
I still remember it very VERY WELL 💯🫶👾🫶🕹️👾 🎄🎄🎄 MERRY RETRO CHRISTMAS 🎄🎄🎄
Love the retro gaming emojis! Merry Retro Christmas to you too! Those Print Shop memories just hit different during the holidays, don't they? 🎄 Keep that classic computing spirit alive! 💾
Just found this video - and LOVING the fact you do version comparison ones - from London, England here - and got my C64 in 1985 - Karateka was jaw-dropping back in 85 - not only for the graphics- but for the music and that word intro
Thanks so much for sharing your nostalgic Commodore 64 memories from London! It's fantastic to hear from someone who experienced Karateka firsthand back in 1985. You're absolutely right - that game was groundbreaking for its time, and I love how you specifically called out not just the visuals but also the audio and intro sequence. Those were pretty revolutionary elements that really set Karateka apart from other games of that era. I do quite a few version comparison videos on my channel, so I'm really glad you're enjoying that style of content! The C64 was such a special machine, and getting one in '85 must have been incredibly exciting. Would love to hear more about your other favorite C64 games from that period if you'd like to share. Thanks for checking out my video - really appreciate the kind words and the personal connection you shared!
Be happy to share :-) - I played all 5 of the games you reviewed here - and the one that sticks out (in the U.K.) was Way of the Exploding Fist - the backgrounds were something else at the time - and the music...well...wow...especially the single player theme tune that sounded so peaceful Then Fist 2 came along - and was good in parts - but also a let-down - but again VERY atmospheric music The Last Ninja finally came along "at last" in Summer 1987 - and stunned me like the rest of the gaming world with its visuals - but again its MUSIC was incredible - although I must be the only one who preferred LN1 to LN2 (which just didn't "sit right" due to its modern setting - apart from the last 2 levels with the Shogun which beat LN1's last battle hands down!) Quite a few Arcade conversions I played on the C64 without ever having played (or first played) the Arcade versions - one in particular that struck me was Irem's "Ninja Spirit" - looking very different on the C64 to the Arcade - but IMO superior music One Arcade game that I DID play before the C64 version was SHINOBI around 1987 - very addictive - and the C64 was lacking music / and a so-so conversion P.S. I was 12 when I got my C64 - was a great time to be a kid in those days - especially with the likes of Ocean software and U.S. Gold imports P.P.S. - did you ever play the amazing "Samurai Warrior - the Battles of Usagi Yojimbo" ? By the makers of Exploding Fist - a sort of Action-adventure with a Samurai bunny - if you haven't - you MUST play it!
I completely agree with you about the incredible music in The Last Ninja-it truly set the standard for atmospheric soundtracks. Way of the Exploding Fist was a masterpiece too, with visuals that still hold up. As for Samurai Warrior - The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo, I’ve played it, and it’s such a unique experience with that mix of action and strategy. The Samurai bunny concept is just genius! Thanks for sharing these awesome memories-it really was a golden time for gaming.
Golden time for gaming is absolutely true! One other C64 game I played around that time which blew me away - Kung Fu Master - the mid-80s was a time when nearly all gamers were crazy for Ninjas and Marital Arts
Merry Christmas, Tom! Print Shop was such an exquisite piece of software . . . and who could forget the distinct chatter of a dot-matrix printer?!
Merry Christmas, John! The Print Shop really was something special, and that dot-matrix chatter is forever etched in my memory. It’s amazing how those sounds bring back such vivid nostalgia!
Sweet memories!
Indeed! 👊🏻🤩
