30000 games in the C64 Gamebase. And Im sure the vast majority of them were coded by a 15 year old in their bedroom. Maybe only 10000 of them were commercial studio games I would say. Impressive that there is such a resurgence in development for the C64 these days. Love the C64.
It’s crazy to think about how many of those games were homebrew projects, often done by teens with a passion for coding. You’re right, maybe only a fraction were commercial releases, but it’s amazing to see how strong the C64 community still is with new developments. The love for the C64 just never fades!
OMG!! You brought back memories. I used to play this and loved it!! My mom would bump me out of the seat after a while and play Vegas Gambler, lol! Both of my parents passed away recently. I want to thank you for sharing this and bringing up some fond memories !!
Thank you so much for sharing that heartfelt memory. It’s amazing how these games can bring back such special moments. It sounds like you had some wonderful times playing with your family, and I’m glad the video could help bring those memories to life again. Your story truly highlights the joy and connection that gaming can bring.
Morning, dude. I'm Róbbi, I'm 36 and from England. I grew up with the c64, and many of my fondest gaming memories are courtesy of this system. It was honestly a pleasure watching you enjoy these games that I also have never heard of- it just shows you what a truly vast library of games exist for the old Commodore, many of which haven't seen the daylight they deserve. Thanks for the video, thanks for reminding me about the Commodore. I'm gonna go play some Paradroid. All the best.
Thanks for sharing, Róbbí! The C64 really has an incredible library, and it’s always fun rediscovering these hidden gems. Glad the video brought back some good memories, and Paradroid is a fantastic choice! All the best to you too!
I got Black Magic as a Christmas gift one year. Completely awesome game. Everyone in the neighborhood wanted to borrow it because I never actually saw it for sale anywhere. No idea where Santa got it...
That’s awesome! Black Magic was such a gem, and it sounds like you had the neighborhood’s most-wanted game! Funny how Santa had his ways of finding those rare titles. Thanks for sharing that great memory!
Our local Commodore club had weekly meetings where they would sell stuff at the end. Being that I was a kid, vendors and members would copy games for me for free! I felt like the richest kid on the block with hundreds of games to play after a few months! I still have my dad's old set-up, but also like CCS64 emulator for PC I never heard of Black Magic but likely would not have played it during the Satanic Panic 80's. Reminds me of Bruce Lee meets Castlevania, though. Hadn't seen any of these games before. Never heard the digi songs, but that's awesome! I was thrilled with SidPlayer. Definitely a quote describing me from 1981 to 1989, "I'm terrible at this, but I like it!"
Lol 😂 that quote describes us both! Thanks for sharing! The weekly Commodore club meetings sound like an amazing experience. I also had a similar journey with game copying-felt like treasure hunting as a kid. And yeah, Black Magic is one of those obscure gems! It’s interesting how some of these titles flew under the radar due to the cultural climate of the time. Glad to hear you’re still enjoying the setup and that Digisongs caught your attention.
I think there's lots to like about Black Magic from the looks of it - I'll have to check that one out. Leviathon definitely gives me Zaxxon vibes and I think that could be a lot of fun to play too. The hamburger one and the last one with the ZX Spectrum palette were nice surprises. A very nice treasure trove of C64 games on this floppy as you mentioned!
Glad you found the games interesting! Black Magic is definitely worth checking out, and I agree, Leviathan does give off those Zaxxon vibes. The hamburger one was a fun surprise too! It’s always great to find these hidden gems on old floppies.
I remember playing 'Black Magic' back in my early high school days (when I met other C64 owners to swap games with, just before the subsequent rise of the Amiga and Consoles) - even had access to the manual too, which I recall was quite well written. Never did get very far into it at the time - after seeing your footage, I might have to remedy that oversight at some point.. 😅
It sounds like Black Magic left a lasting impression! It’s always great when you stumble upon a game manual that’s well-crafted; it makes diving into the world of the game even more immersive. High school days were prime for those game swaps and finding hidden gems in friends’ collections. I definitely recommend giving it another shot-it has that unique charm that can only come from early C64 titles.
Black Magic does look damn cool. Even after owning a good 1000 C64 games myself back in the day, I'm still always pleasantly surprised when something completely "new" and/or unknown pops up...
Totally agree! Even after playing so many games, it’s always a nice surprise when something new or obscure pops up. Black Magic definitely has that “cool” factor. Thanks for watching!
Black Magic looks really interesting to me. Thanks for showing it. I really like platform games. Now I need to find it. I could go with the Apple II or Amstrad CPC version too. It is also on the ZX Spectrum.
Glad you found it interesting! Black Magic is definitely a hidden gem in the platformer space. The Apple II or Amstrad CPC versions should be solid options if you can track them down. Let me know how it goes once you get a copy!
That first game, "Black magic" looks really cool. (Obviously, the horror theme appeals to me LOL) The graphics and animation are excellent though and I like the style of gameplay too. I wouldn't mind checking it out for myself.
Glad to hear you enjoyed Black Magic! The horror theme really does make it stand out, and the gameplay, with its blend of action and exploration, adds a lot of depth. It’s definitely a fun one to check out if you like that eerie atmosphere. If you’re into classic horror-themed games, this is a great one to dive into. Let me know what you think if you give it a try!
Another great episode. Thanks for sharing Tom. For sure will play the first game. I don't remember any of these really. DIGIs were cool and very popular on QLink. I should have several disks with them on there. I seem to recall that some were loaded into the 1764 REU for extra playing time.
Thanks for the comment! DIGIs were definitely something special, and QLink made everything feel more connected back then. That’s cool you still have those disks! The 1764 REU was a game-changer for sure, offering that extra bit of power. Let me know what you think of the first game when you get around to it!
I had Leviathan (sold under the Thunder Mountain budget brand). I suppose it was fixed for NTSC, and had a nice title screen with some interesting animations and music. Don't recognize the other games from this disk but it's fun to see them.
Thanks for sharing! Leviathan under the Thunder Mountain brand was definitely a neat budget release, and the NTSC fix made it even better. The animations and music were solid for the time. Glad you enjoyed seeing these other titles too!
Glad you liked the episode! Black Magic is definitely a cool find, and I agree, Leviathan can be pretty tough. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
aufiederzen monty is the last game in the monty mole trilogy. Very hard games but you should listen to the monty on the run soundtrack. It is a very long and enjoyable masterpiece of C64 music.
I totally agree! Auf Wiedersehen Monty is such a tough but rewarding game, and the Monty on the Run soundtrack is definitely a C64 masterpiece. Rob Hubbard really outdid himself with that one! Thanks for the great suggestion!
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll definitely look into making the gameplay screen larger in future videos to improve the viewing experience. Appreciate your feedback!
You where right - never heard of Black Magic but is is a interesting game. I quite sure that i have played Leviathan. Thanks for the video - always fun to see games that i have forgotten about. With a little bit of luck the new Ultimate Elite II motherboard for the C64 is in my hands just before xmas.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Leviathan is another classic that brings back memories. Hope that Ultimate Elite II motherboard arrives in time-sounds like a fantastic upgrade for the C64! Keep me posted on how it goes!
Black magic scores a very respectable 7.64 from 37 votes on lemon 64 (may have been mentioned but a 37 year old game). Cant believe that music on the 64, final countdown and stand by me - never knew the 64 could do that and limit it to 64k when mp3s were in the megabytes! Most impressive for me was the shooter, hadnt heard of any of them. Out of curiosity do you ever end up getting stuck into the games and plsy them.for days / weeks on end when you find them on whats on that floppy or do they go back into the filing cabinet?
It’s amazing what they could pull off with just 64k, right? The music still blows my mind too! As for getting stuck into the games, oh yeah, sometimes I’ll dive deep and lose track of time, especially with a good one! But most of the time, they end up back in the cabinet until the next What’s on That Floppy? episode. It’s all part of the fun!
Black Magic sounded like it ripped some of its sound effects from Boulderbash. Have you played Spelunky 64 yet? I bought it a few weeks ago and have been playing the heck out of it.
Interesting catch about Black Magic! I’ll have to listen again to see if those effects match Boulder Dash. I haven’t tried Spelunky 64 yet, but it sounds like a blast-definitely adding it to my list! Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate your perspective. The “must play” was meant to emphasize the hidden gems of the C64, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future titles. Glad you found the video interesting!

Black magic looks awesome! The C64 needs much more exploration. Looks like a Metroidvania!
Black Magic is a hidden gem that deserves more love! 🕹️

That’s pretty cool with the multiple camera angles, well done! I enjoyed the Zaxxon-like game!
I played so long my score took up part of the play field. Beat that arcade record by so much at the time.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the camera angles and the Zaxxon-like game! It was fun trying something new with the setup. Appreciate the feedback!

Thanks for the heads up on Black Magic, that does look fun. Keep up the good work, Jim in UK.
Thanks, Jim! Glad you found Black Magic interesting. Appreciate the support from the UK-I’ll keep the content coming!

Black Magic really looks cool and indeed i've never heard of it yet. Have Leviathan on Tape. It's too difficult for me. 😀 Cool episode again!
Glad you liked the episode! Black Magic is definitely a cool find, and I agree, Leviathan can be pretty tough. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
Gave you a thumbs up, keep em coming. I never had floppies, always tape.
Thanks brother! I like your C64 posters on your wall. Have a good one! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.✌
Thanks brother! Appreciate the support and encouragement! More to come!
That Black Magic looks VERY cool.
Glad you think so! Black Magic is definitely a standout with its unique vibe. Thanks for watching!

juicy burger
That game was an interesting one! Thanks for Watching!
Interesting video but I think it’s clickbait to describe the games, in the header, as MUST PLAY.
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate your perspective. The “must play” was meant to emphasize the hidden gems of the C64, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future titles. Glad you found the video interesting!
storing disks on a crt is the most bad place to keep them
