The Sega Master System really shines. I've always been on the NES - and it's not like I've ever took sides - it's just that it's the system I had and the games were more readily available at the time. Awesome to see these throwbacks side-by-side!

It really does. I never had the SMS, so comparing has been a blast and, WOW, the SMS games look good.

While I love the NES, and SMS, I have fallen in love with the Atari 7800, it may not have had much compared to the other two, but it did have some charming games. The real kicker is that the 7800 had enough horse power to do most 80's arcade games justice, whether anyone thought so or not. Homebrewers are really showing what the 7800 was made of!

I didn't even know the SMS was a thing until the early 90s when a friend got one. The SNES and Genesis were already out so I didn't have much interest in getting one, but I was truly shocked at what I had missed out on in the 80s.

Very interesting video! We never have SMS in Russia (USSR). We had only clone of NES / Famicom called "Dendy". That were old good days...

There are still a bunch of games and game genres you can compare between the two consoles.
For example Ikari Warriors on NES compares well with the Rambo game on SMS. Rad Racer could be compared to Outrun. Space Harrier showed up on both. Kung Fu vs Vigilante. Top Gun vs After Burner. Adventure Island vs Wonder Boy.

By comparing games made for each system, you may be able to compare the systems, but honestly its also about the homebrew scene too. For example, the NES is getting a brand new games called Former Dawn. The developer is using some new mapper with an FPGA to do bank switching on the fly. The game is estimated to be a few dozen MB in size.
So its not just about the games made in the 1980's for these systems. These systems are constantly getting new games made for them. And new hardware can expand upon the capabilities of the consoles.
What happened in the USA is that the Nintendo 8-bit console just took off while the Master System was left in the dust. Nobody that I knew from this timer period had a Master System. I think I only knew one person who had it and all I knew at the time was that, this was the console SEGA made before the Genesis.
The Sega Genesis put Sega on the map and games like Sonic 2 were top tier. Also the box art and cartridge sticker art for the Master System had no appeal. You couldn't tell what the game was like based off of the box art.
The Box artwork is the main selling point for games. You have to show everyone what the game is going to be like. Half of the entertainment value is the box and sticker artwork. The Master System didn't have that charm like the NES did.
Also where is the Pause button on the Master System controller? Oh it doesn't exist. That was a missed move on Sega's part. Thankfully you can use a Genesis controller with the pause button on it, if the game's program supports it. This is the only way to go in my opinion. Playing the Master System with the Genesis controller.

Sunsoft Fantasy Zone is actually a very delicate application of the NES hues. It was that or a visual mess. So it's a much more soft and relaxing game. It's totally fair to prefer it. Maybe not the Tengen version as much.

I've always been team NES (note my avatar), but the SMS smoked it in this round.
I played the heck out of Rampage on the SMS. It was a great version of the arcade game we loved.
I agree with your picks except for Fantasy Zone. I thought the SMS did it better, except for the sound. I was never fond of the SMS sound chip. It's got a distinct sound that's easy to pick out.

The Master System was a more powerful console, released a little later. I got it, just after the Mega Drive was released, purely because my parents could afford it and a friend of my dad's was selling one.
Later on I did get a Mega Drive, which I loved, but it wasn't as powerful as the SNES, which was released a little later.

SMS Paperboy looks nicer, but is a harder game with it's faster pace. It's more like the arcade, for sure, but I guess that's why I prefer the NES version. It has a more approachable difficulty level.

  • @LUCKO2022
    @LUCKO2022 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Oh come on
Some of these aren't even fair comparisons
You can't compare Sonic since it was never released on the NES. Homebrew or bootlegs don't count.
You compare Shinobi from NES to Master System, one was done by Sega themselves and the other by Atari not a fair comparison at all.
Can't compare Robocop vs Terminator since the NES version never got a official release while the SMS version did in Europe. Again not fair comparison at all.
Fantasy Zone as well. One was done by Sega themselves and the other was Atari.

There is only one Fair here in Texas and it's in October and has a Ferris wheel. There is not a huge list of games to choose from for these two systems. I think Homebrews and Bootlegs and unofficial releases are all on the table. I find them fascinating and great for discussion. Plus I like to play them! Thanks for watching!
