    Hi and thank you for your videos about winter sowing! I’d love more of them. I live in Sweden, zone 6b I think, and tried out winter sowing for the first time ever this mars and april with mostly great results. I also planted out a lot of the seedlings in chunks but a LOT later than you though, in the middle of june. Many of them where big enough to be planted out much earlier but my area was not prepared before then, and actually some seeds germinated in june- like the heucheras and they are still in pots. I sowed perennials for the most part and also some annuals, but the perennials gave better germination I would say. Have you tried out autumn sowing too? I thought I’d try it out and see the difference. 🌱🌸

    I have Sea Holly that sprouted up in an oval garden bed - 6 plants. They are flopping over and look unsightly, but I love the plant for its unique look and how it nourishes so many insects. If I try to dig them out, I'm going to disturb the roots of neighbouring plants (correct?). It's late July, zone 7a. What would happen if I cut them back to the ground right now, until I can figure out what to do with them next spring - would they die, never to return, or would they start to regrow and then be hurt by the winter weather?

    • @MonicaKatie
      @MonicaKatie หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have dug up sea holly roots from self seeding and potted up to give to some friends. It seem to do just fine, but I had done that in early spring. The neighboring plants seem to be fine - although I have removed a good amount of them from my garden as they also flop for me plus they are so pinchy. The past couple of years the deer (or rabbits maybe) have eaten the leaves at the bottom but it didn't seem to affect the plant at all and it still grew and flowered. I think this plant is pretty hardy and somewhat hard to kill. Remember they have a very deep tap root so you will need to dig down quite far. Hope that helps.

    Things I never need to plant again if I let them go to seed: Borage, coneflower, Sweet William, cilantro, poppies, marigolds and calendulas. They pop up everywhere and all are easy to move or pull. Great to know about winter sown tomatoes as I’m testing peppers and tomatoes in my garden to see if they produce the same as indoor starts. Love the forget me nots and just bought seeds for pink. The pansies 🤩 look great in a pot crowded together. I’ve discovered bigger onions by growing from seed and planting in full sun 6” apart. I realized a bit late this year that onion seeds don’t keep past a year. Hope they get to the finish line as it’s almost summer solstice and it’s bulbing time here. So hot, humid and bouts of rain the rust and soon mildew will be here so I ripped out most of the poppies as there was way too many and need air. The mosquitoes were not in my garden vision for this year, but they are here anyways. Not too enjoyable with a head net on, long sleeves and it’s 90 degrees as I see NJ is also. 😂😂you have no choice on the lemon balm😂😂it stays whether you want it or not-just kidding. Ohhh, the Agastache 👏🏼👏🏼🤩 it looks similar to penstemon!! Can’t wait to see it here as I have Raspberry Daiquiri and Apache Sunset. By accident I planted the new Josephine clematis near the variegated pink penstemon and it really looked nice. It’s a happy dance when you surprise yourself 😅. Your veg garden is set up very nice. Good luck to us both if we miss the vine borer.

      Peppers have not fruited for me early enough when I winter sowed them so this year I grew the peppers and eggplant indoors. Have not seen any lemon balm or agastache self seed. Loving your pink Hydrangea at the start of this video. Very prolific. Coneflowers are so awesome. Can’t go wrong with them with all the different colors they come in. This is my first year growing ageratum. I believe the perennial one is flossflower which I also planted in a different area of my garden but not sure that is getting enough sun. That dahlia is surprising because that is about 5 feet from the foundation but I guess it is sheltered by a lot of shrubs. We'll see if it does anything.

    😂Astilbes! I have this plant after my in-laws sold their home and now I know why my FIL surrounded it with rocks and I’m sure cut it back because after 4 years it has gained very powerful legs! Yes, they take over and I have no idea where else to put it. Mine is lavender. I noticed since the oak tree has increased the shade the Columbine and astilbe picked up Big time! I definitely have work to do this fall. Your weather sounds like ours here in WI with rain and boy did the astilbe love that. The stems, leaves are bigger than ever. Suppose I could put a free sign on them. The dogwood can get pretty aggressive also. I once had red twig and now yellow twig. I think I have to start considering how aggressive a plant can get before I plant them as I don’t need heavy work going forward. The poppies and primrose are easy to pull. I hope the astilbe didn’t create an iron mat like oregano that was here before us, couldn’t even sink a shovel into it. I still have two plants on my list for shrubs-a snowball and a snowflake Viburnam like you have. The red wigelia that was here is a nice shrub and it has bloomed red flowers a good share of the summer the last 2 years after I cut old canes to the base. I never bought ajuga and it appeared, but I had to catch it as it was choking out the grass. Nice ground cover though as nothing grows through it. We are a couple of weeks behind in growth than your area as we get cold nights longer. That heat is here and it will be a jungle as there are numerous rain chances this week. So nice not to have drought, but the mosquitoes 🤯

      @MonicaKatie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I started the astilbe from bare root and they were not as large as they are getting this year. I’ll just dig out a couple of them and re home them. Not sure if the dogwood is spreading but plan on cutting back at least 1/3 of it this fall/winter which may help keep it under control. Happy gardening 😉

    Ugh deer and rabbits! I have to fence everything. If you have day lilies they think they are bon bons. The peony was a lovely color! Cameras are not always kind at capturing the wonderful colors of flowers. I started the cherry rudbeckia also this year and it’s still short and trying to figure out what it’s suppose to do. And I must get some Rose campion! Very nice color in foliage and flower. I had a surprise return on I think salvia also. So fun to have those surprises. Looks like you’ve had a bit of rain as well. The poppies here have taken over and had to move the yarrow out to save it. I really need to thin those poppies as soon as blooms are done. Before I realized they like it here I planted 3 other varieties and a bit scared what they may do. I like things to reseed, but Wow! Now that the soil is better I have more flowers that are getting aggressive and will take those to try planting outside of the box 😊 to see what can survive the wildlife. Have a hollyhock turned tree next to Julia Child rose and things in general are getting crowded and roses want air. A new favorite is penstemon and it’s amazing how it looks at the base of clematis-pinks and deep red purples. The lavender is blooming and love it hot and dry. I have an oak nearby one bed and I think it zaps all the moisture as I’m always watering other flowers, but stay away from lavender and it loves it. You have many flowers that I have started and can’t wait to see them. If the sweet peas don’t pick it up the heat may do them in. Thank you for the tour and hope the wildlife finds another yard.

      Yeah, this is the one garden bed I don't have fenced in just some chicken wire to keep rabbits out of certain plants. I don't have day lilies or hostas as I've heard they are deer candy. We have been getting at least one weekly storm where we get a ton of rain in an hour or two but otherwise dry. Nowe we are going into a week of 90+ weather so I hope that everthing will fair well - will be keeping everything watered. This garden bed was a little out of control and had to take out several plants as other things take over. I'm looking forward to adding some penstemon in my garden. Yeah, the lavender definetly likes the sandy soil and and the dryier side. I transplanted one where it rarely gets water and the soil is poor but it is loving that spot. Thanks for stopping by and watching. 😊❤

    Hello is the wire cages around some of the flowers for deer or flopping . I find peony cages are very expensive and thought that chicken wire ? Might help

    • @MonicaKatie
      @MonicaKatie 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I have a lot of deer and rabbits. Rabbits are sometimes even worse than the deer. The chicken wire cages primarily are to protect from rabbits because the deer can still reach in through the top. For my large peony I do have a peony support. I suppose chicken wire might wrangle the peony so it doesn’t flop.

      Aw, thanks my friend 😊 ❤. Yeah, it was such a hassle with those rabbits and I sure hope that they are truly out of that garden and can't get back inside. I resecured the entire perimeter but we shall see. I've grown the traditional blue bachelors buttons before and they are very pretty so I wanted to try the white ones this year. The germination was not as good on the white ones. Hopefully they will flower before it gets too hot.

    Rabbits😡, deer 😡 it’s a battle. I have a garden that looks like a zoo with all the fencing. I moved some coneflower to a trail and no fence-they started eating it and never did next to house. Put a fence around it and they came back and were disgusted to see they couldn’t finish them off. That peony is gorgeous. I could only hope one of the newer peonies bloom this year as I haven’t had luck growing them. Yes! It’s a Russian Sage and Sea Holly year for me also! And a Salvia blow out 😂 I have 5 kinds. Good to know the strawflower looks like that as I thought mine didn’t like it here. I chuckled when you said you chunk planted the Feverfew 😅I grew them inside and they look like mounds of moss. That’s a nice fence! You have to do it because it’s not fun to see hardworking and joy destroyed. I just finished poultry wire around our 7’ wire fencing. That Viola looks the same colors as your free iris 🤩. You will have a ton of flowers before long! The Viburnams are gorgeous! I can’t wait for the Mock Orange to bloom. Sorry but those rabbits would have been totally removed here. They carry ticks, lice and the lady at garden center said worms-😅just added to my reasons. We had 5 baby rabbits in the garden last year because they can squeeze through 2x4” wire and I couldn’t figure out why we had no lettuce and peas. Yep, plastic doesn’t work for rabbits. Today I noticed I’m missing some beets-it’s a war! So I have astilbes and they are taking over. I now know why my FIL surrounded it with rocks😅. I just read today the Jupiters Beard can reseed readily. I’m trying to get rid of two invasives from previous owner-plantain hosta is hideous and I don’t like any hostas because of it. One piece of root acts like crab grass and it is spreading into the grass. The other was sold as Steppables years back and found it’s called stonecrop that loves sandy dry soil-Argh! That’s what I have! I don’t like chemicals but I think I may have to use something to get rid of these two plants for good. When we got here there was no worms at all. We now have them because I’ve improved the soil and I use to say whatever grows can grow-well, the poppies, lemon balm and a little primrose are taking over. The latter was brought here by me from last residence and it did nothing for a decade and all of a sudden it’s gone nuts. If you’ve had Jupiter’s Beard White Cloud let me know what you think. I’m afraid I’m adding to my aggressive list. Thx for the tour!

      Yeah, it is such a struggle with the deer but especially the rabbits. Believe me it crossed my mind to just make those babies a snack for some other creature. Saw the mama bunny come by yesterday afternoon so I sure hope none of her babies are trapped in my fenced in cut flower garden. Hahaha, I didn't even notice that the iris and violas have the same colors but they do match so well! I had several sea hollies in my front corner garden but I removed several of them because I didn't like the smell and they contantly flopped on me - and they are pinchy. The leaves at the bottom would sometimes be eaten but the plant still flowered. They were really tough to remove and they self seeded everwhere. I am looking to add maybe some taller penstemon but not sure if they are rabbit and deer resistant. Would like a few more veronicas as well they seem to do better for me than salvias. Yeah, that is why I added 1" inch chicken wire to the fence because they can squeeze through 2x4 and when young 2"x2". Last year I found a nest in my raised bed by my peas. Those babies were moved and likely were snacks at night - sorry but that is one place I cannot allow it. I further secured the corner where I think the mama was coming in and haven't had an issue since then, but never say never. I have never tried Jupiters Beard. I have a bit of stonecrop that seeds itself readily. One little piece is left behind and it can grow back. I have clay soil so I have been able to control it for the most part. I have bermuda grass and it is the devil himself!!!!! I hope I can get it under control in the cut flower garden. I brushed on some killzall on them but it didn't seem to do anything to them. might try another application later.

      @@MonicaKatie yep, too many rabbits. One built under a day lily after I planted it. Oh I hope I’m not creating more problems with a few perennials I started from seed. Our sand loves to help some of these bad actors too much. I couldn’t remember if sea Holly is picky and you answered that. I will need to deadhead them early and see if that helps. I know pollinators like them. Right now I’m finding poppies all over and after thinning they are still thick-need to save the yarrow today as it’s not liking all the company😄. I had one Victoria last year and thought it was a goner and found it this year-wonder what color it will be because it was called sightseeing mix 😅. @@MonicaKatie It doesn't reseed. It grows on shoots underground that come up EVERYWHERE. Like mint does. I don't mind too much right now as they're easy to pull up and plant in the bare spots but oh boy once that process is over I might just have some in pots.
