Yes it is! More than I can use but I always loose some when transplanting. I like this method of starting hardy plants.
Thank you for showing your results and many were exploding! I will go back to make notes. Because of warm winters I’ve mentioned before that the WS has turned more to a spring sow. I started later and set on east side of house and just moved them to south side of greenhouse a couple weeks ago.
Most have germinated. I had old seeds of Amish Cockscomb and that really over did itself-it looked like some of yours that were bursting with green.
Now, I use clear large water jugs. I’m wondering about the narrow tall ones you have if they get too hot or not enough soil to air to keep them in the happy zone. I know NJ had a ton of rain and some of those you showed don’t like wet feet. Still give the others a bit of time as they may still show up. And yet sometimes if too wet they rot.
Poppies can be finicky but I suspect they got too hot as the ones taking over the flower garden (red poppy)seem to grow in the snow. I’ve seen huge differences in growth between varieties. Lauren’s Grape doesn’t care for the cool weather so far, breadseed poppies I find weak in growth and CA poppies even weaker.
We have been so cold since last Saturday with a freeze every night but one and windy yesterday. Tonight will be the last freeze for at least 10 days and I nice stretch of steady warm weather and rain which we badly need-hopefully without severe storms this weekend. I hope the fruit buds didn’t freeze as I gave up on covering trees as I think I knocked off more buds than the freeze would 🙄.
Thanks for revealing as it reminds me to open mine tomorrow. I have had better germination starting inside. Those foxgloves are tricky and I do think fresh seed is needed. Someone said they need dark to germinate🤷♀️. Also want to start a couple peppers and tomatoes outside and compare to inside. z5, WI.
Oh, the bergamot is one that doesn’t like wet soil either. And with all the new varieties I really have to watch these days for perennials and annuals.
I agree, we are now spring sowing rather than winter sowing. I have used some larger clear jugs in the past but I have a coworker who is able to give me tons of water jugs. Those tall narrow water bottles did not do well with any of the seeds I grew in them except for the cilantro - won't be using those again. Hope your weather is warming up and get started on all your gardening. I still have so much to do and I feel like summer weather will be here before we know it.
@@MonicaKatie yes, we have the clear water Costco jugs and I think the sun gets too intense on those vs. milk jugs. Setting on east side of house until the temps stabilized then moved to south out of wind worked. I won’t sow them until March/April like you from now on.
Tomorrow they forecasted 70s now it’s 80s. Suppose I can get those tomatoes out to the GH, but somethings have to come out first😆. Those heirloom tomatoes can start looking ragged when they jump in growth. I didn’t have time to check on them and in one day they leaped 😳.
I started brassicas a few weeks back under low tunnels. I was able to successfully harvest bak Choi, but even then one was ready to bolt. I’ve had sweet peppers under a tunnel for a week and they are doing well. I so wanted to get out today and sink some more plants and it was too sunny and windy. Was out till dark last night until a brief storm cropped up-very little rain and I ran over my tiny propagated maple I forgot about-sigh. I just wanted to get inside in case of lightening or tornadoes-you never know. And I checked for northern lights at 1 am and apparently they showed at 3 am. Maybe tonight or early morning they will show.
My husband asked where are they all going to go? I wasn’t concerned until I looked at what he seen-the winter sow jugs🤣🤣
