  • Winter sowing my annual flowers in early March, plus sowing bunching onions. I will also show you what has germinated from my February winter sowing.

I started Verbena bonariensis by winter sowing probably 20 years ago. They still come up. Once you have them, you will always have them.
Same for the forget-me-nots. Though I wish now I had never planted them. Their little seed heads catch on to everything and they come up everywhere. Always have to pick them out of my cat's fur and off of my clothes.

I would love for the verbena to re-seed itself but I don't have much luck with that in my garden for some reason. I am crossing my fingers I don't regret the forget me nots. For all I know they will be eaten by the deer and rabbits and I won't even be able to grow them.

I love this winter sowing method! It does really work well. Save your milk and distilled water jugs. Thanks for sharing.

Great idea winter sowing annuals around this time. I love the look of Verbena. I love the water bottle watering container. I see a lot of those at thrift stores and I never want to buy to drink out of them but I would like to use it to water my plants (yours look like it has a sprinkle effect). Can't wait to see all your beautiful annuals. Do you do tomatoes and peppers? Thanks for sharing.

The cap on the bottle is for watering and is like a nice gentle watering can sprinkle. I have winter sowed tomatoes and peppers. I will be starting my WS tomatoes early April. I won’t be WS peppers anymore because my growing season is not long enough for them to produce fruit. I need starts or grow them indoors to give them a head start and get peppers during the growing season.

Wow! I think that is the most seed I’ve ever seen from a Swallowtail packet and I’ve purchased a lot in last two years. I think it was Veronica that I may need to call them about as it was basically dust. Only 2 popped up as the rest looked like chaf.
This weather is crazy warm here in WI the last 2 winters and I’m reluctant to start too soon so I’m trying to wait and observing when you sow and adjusting to my Z5a.
I would love to do all seeds in WS to keep the mess outside and in 2022 had a great turnout. I think last year the sprouted too soon and froze.
This year I’ve only done a few so far. In my hunt to figure out how to deal with hot winter I came across a suggestion to place them on the east side of a building to get morning sun only and closer to spring move to full sun.
    ,
When you sow annuals are you basically following the 4, 6, 8 weeks on the instructions?
    I think that’s what I may do.
Just freaking out if all of them germinated too soon I would have to heat the GH sooner than would like.

I guess verbena must produce a lot of seeds? I am not quite following the weeks before last frost for my WS. I am mostly focused on hardy annual and perennials in February, then March are more half hardy types and the warm weather types in April. With these crazy weather I'm not sure my milkweed will actually germinate as they are not going to get the amount of cold they need. Might have to start over by putting seeds in fridge and them planting out.

@@MonicaKatie I tried Hello Yellow butterfly weed in WS last year and was a no-go. Growing it indoors right now and they are germinating. Started on 3/8 and started appearing 3/16 and many more today. No heat mat on bottom shelf with humidity dome. I did stick several packs of seeds in the fridge inside plastic zip lock and not sure if that did anything because proper way is the seed needs to be moist. Anyhow, they are coming on strong. The orange has already taken over the flower bed from a few years ago. The yellow seems weaker here as I’ve had a plant out in the field but think deer or rabbits find seed pods every year. Will be putting these inside fenced area.
Just had to check where you were again (NJ). So I’m about a month behind your dates. I will hold off for a bit yet then for warmer weather flowers.
It is freezing here today Z5a, WI-we’ve had way above normal temps all winter and today at 31F with wind feels like 19F is a shocker. And we could still get snow in April. I think many of us will need to set up low tunnels to get cool weather crops out in time and babysit opening and closing with the temp swings being so extreme. Thx for the tips!
