Welcome to Learned From Dad!
As a life learner, adventurer, and lover of educating, I started this channel to capture a breadth of knowledge for my own growing children, but to also share with the rest of the world. I hope you may benefit from it as much as my two kids.
Much of the channel content will include How To, How It Works, and How I Did It to help a broad audience understand all the things, from simple to complex, but in 'normal person' words.
Enjoy, subscribe, like, and check back often!
Cheers-
James

Engine won't crank or start. Bad battery, alternator, or current draw?
Will it start? Let's troubleshoot electrical to make my Bobcat T300 engine crank and start (again) in cold weather. After having engine no start issues for a couple years (only when cold), it's time to fix it.
I suspect a bad battery and it needs replaced, but before jumping to that conclusion, let's also test the alternator current output to ensure it's working. And, let's also test for electrical current draw while the key is off, to ensure nothing is draining the battery.
Check out some of the electrical tools I was using (Amazon Affiliate links):
-Fluke 117 Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM/Multi-Meter)

-Fluke 325 Amp Clamp Multi-Meter (specifically does A/C and D/C)

Excellent explanations
Thanks! Keep things simple for the everyday person. Cheers!
For what its worth I would add one step based on my personal experience with my 22 ram. After your first or second prime cycle check for leaks. Especially with the engine bay filter. The O ring on that housing is easy to install crooked on the back side where you cannot see it. If that happens you will have a mess so better to catch on the first prime cycle and just a good idea to check for leaks anyway before you do a number of cycles
Ahhhh, yes, that's a great point about leak checks. I always keep the used oring until I'm confident there are not leaks, just in case. The used ones often seem a little stretches after being removed, but better to have something than nothing if something goes sideways. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing! gonna try that. lol
I've never seen him be so excited to do a chore 😆
This will be my Monday after work project. Thanks for the concise, but thorough tutorial.
You bet! Glad another Cummins owner found it useful. Cheers!
Do you happen to have a pdf of the standard to metric conversion and metric to standard for hex keys ? 12/7/24
Have you tried checking and changing out the fuel filter in that machine. Check the ground wires and power wires on it.,an the body to alternator cause the diode could be bad inside of it now. I'd clean everything off really good with wire brush.,drill and A wire wheel to get A clean metal to metal surface of the loop.,or eyelet connector crimped on to A new wire as A jumper wire to complete the grounding circuit on that machine properly.
It actually does need a service, I've got filters in the garage. I did check the ground for being tight and no visual corrosion, but I didn't remove and clean, at least not yet. Good point on the alternator grounding and diode, I haven't done that yet. Thanks for the suggestion!
I do like me some electrical troubleshooting, so glad you did that for us even though your money and mine was on CCA. So for Auto parts, we do not have O’Riley in my area. We have everything else and some independents who specialize in delivering to shops. My go to is NAPA. I like their batteries best. And they have a good staff.
I'll take great help/support any day, from a business, over fancy stores. It's a blessing to find people who really care. Cheers!
👍👍👍. Thanks James
Thanks for stopping back!
I've never used a clamp meter like that pretty slick. Where did you learn about those?
I worked for a large mechanical, electrical, sheet metal, and service contractor for 5 years. Our guys regularly used amp clamps for troubleshooting. However, not all of then work on DC power, so I made sure the one I bought did, as I work regularly on both AC and DC systems.
Anyone else truly enjoy electrical troubleshooting? Or, am I the only one?!
Not this guy. Glad other people do.

I love these videos!
Thanks! I sure do love goofing around with that boy. 😊
😂 you guys seem to have a lot of fun together!
Oh yes. Living free out here in the country.
FYI. never trust a switch as a shut off for power. some electricians still run hot wires thru the box that might not be turned off. it may not be smart. but some timed running it like that is faster and cheaper for them to do it like that.
Absolutely 100%!! Never trust. Thank you for reinforcing that. Cheers!
Could you drop a link for the power pen and your stud finder??
Sure! I updated the video description with links to those items. I'm planning upcoming videos on those tools/topics, so stay tuned! The stud finder is a Franklin Sensors model, the absolute best I've used, love it. The non-contact voltage detector (power pen) is a version from Klein Tools (50 - 1,000volt). Thanks for watching!
I have upgraded the lighting in my garage to LED tubes, like you did but they are less than ideal and I have been looking for something better at a reasonable price. These aren't cheap, but they sure do put out a bunch of light!
Yes, super bright! I definitely didn't need to 200w max fixtures, but, happy to have to flexibility. Thanks for watching!
Will these be OK in an unheated garage in sub-freezing temperature? Why not put a dimmer on the wall switch?
I looked back at the Amazon description and I couldn't find any temp ratings. I went ant looked at one of the fixtures in my garage and it indicates only a max operating temp of 40 degrees Celsius. So, I'm not 100% sure sure on the low end unfortunately. You bring up a good question and point about a dimmer. These ARE dimmable, but it's done by connecting a 0-10v dimmer into the LED driver on the fixture. So, it's not a traditional dimmer where your adjusting the supply voltage into the fixture like an old school light fixture with incandescent bulb. Hope that helped. Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
I can't tell you how much it means to see you back here on every video, and the support. It's people like yourself that really make this a positive experience for me. See you on the next one!
@@LearnedFromDad Thank you for your earnest effort in your content; I wish there were more people like you.

Yes, I like it too! I have always like white. Definitely needs some accents. Working on changing light fixtures currently! Thank you!
10:02 "Summer of 69" killer song
Takes me right back to college 😁
I need a garage light upgrade. I only havr a few single bulb lights. Anyone ever used the LED replacement bulbs that have multiple panels? Wonder if it would be cheaper than new fixtures?
I've never tried those panel LEDs, but I'm sure they'd work great if you don't want to mess with new fixtures. I'm not sure about price on those.
Lumen ratings are almost always grossly over-rated.. 150 watts is a lot of power for LED's.... 4000 to 5000 kelvin is too "warm" yellow.. WAGO's (push in or lever type) are much better than wire nuts when using stranded to solid wire....
Agree on the lumen comment, always seems variable, even though the numbers may state otherwise. Regarding color, I always look at that like BBQ....the best is the one you like haha. I like whiter light in my shop space, around 5k, but in my home I much prefer a much more yellow look, normally 3k. I didn't mention in the video, but with the original fixtures I put up, I did try the stranded in those pre-installed friction connectors and I could pull it back out quite easily...didn't give me much comfort. Suspect a real Wago would have been better, though I had a pile of wire nuts lying around, just made sure to lead the stranded a bit to ensure it was well seated. You sound very familiar with electrical, are you an electrician? Cheers!
👍👍👍 1st time I've seen adjustable lights of this type of design. Thank you
Yes, I think their great! I did a lot of looking before I bought these. I might need sunglasses in my garage 😎
I'm excited about this garage light upgrade. What's your favorite hobby you like to do in your garage shop? Me, take things apart....and hope to get it back together 😁
These alligator jaw universal wrenches were incredibly common dating back to the American civil war and dominated before crescent debuted adjustables around 1910ish and for some time after as a cheaper alternative. They were used on steam locomotives and boats as well as early submarines a lot because the jaws could work as a pipe wrench as well as turn a nut. A great deal of nuts back then were square head instead or hex. They're still found in antique stores. They were much chunkier back then though, these are very very thin bu comparison. That's the only real upside to those that I can see; if you need a wide variety of super thin wrenches and can't afford a whole set I could see owning these for a while.
Great history lesson! I agree, definitely could have their place in the tool drawer. I can see their charm. I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm in an antique store. Maybe I'll stumble upon one at auction.
Haha, this is awesome. Wonder if you'd find one on a SpaceX rocket. I'm sure Elon Musk could take the idea and make it functional!
I'm sure some smart engineer could take the idea to outer space...pun intended. But, I bet it wouldn't cost only $2 😂
Make aligator wrenches great again
Do washers really come in all different shapes? Or really only the one shape. But I'm the one watching and highly entertained by this video so I'll just keep my mouth shut 😅
Hahaha, I think you've got me there......at least in a 2-dimensional sense! You made me laugh. Thanks for watching!
I love that you just threw that $2 POS into the back of your tool box filled with like $20,000 worth of Snap-On
Haha, mostly not Snap-On actually. But, the day may come where I need to cannibalize a tool....and that's a candidate. Or, throw it as a stress relief moment 😂
Ahh yes, the good old Chinesium "Snap off" brand 😉😄
Lol. You know, a $2 tool is like a train wreck about to happen....you just can't look away. And, no matter how hard you try, it ends up in your shopping cart 😂
Lots of details to think about. Looks nice. Did it turn out as you expected?
Yes, it did. I like the farmhouse look, and I got closer to that. Next up, some nee exterior lights and garage door accents. I'm also thinking shutters, but undecided on color. Thanks for watching!
So, I think the house needs shutters, what do you think? Black, cedar, other? Cheers!
Cedar would complement a farmhouse beautifully
@@mbergheaud I definitely want to cedar wrap the columns on the porch. I'm still unsure about the shutters. I suppose I could build cedar and always paint them black if I want a change 😁
The laugh I got trying it was worth the $2....cheaper than a bottle of soda. What do you think?
Definitely just a bolt rounder lmao. Fact it came prebent. Then again. 2$. Idek how theyre making money on it!
@@thisisawasteofyourtime4843 hahaha, for real, right! It was too tempting to pass up. I've wasted more money on sillier things 😂

From one dad to another, this makes me happy to hear! Enjoy and let me know what you'd like to see next. Below is the second video I referenced, and a good starter lesson, on quickly identifying metric versus imperial bolt by looking at the bolt head. th-cam.com/video/D9l5Kp6-JNs/w-d-xo.html Cheers farmer!
Archie’s living his best life. 😎
He sure is! He is definitely very loved, and maybe occasionally spoiled 😁
I get a kick out of your dog, what breed is he? Seems just like one of your kids!
Oh yes, he's my best buddy....goes almost everywhere with me. He's a lab and boarder collie mix. Mostly docile like a lab, with sudden bursts of energy like a board collie!
3:09 Good idea on going to a truck stop for an extra large brush. What made you think of that?
Funny you should ask. First, I've had my CDL since I've been 18, though I rarely get to drive truck these days.....occasionally help a farmer. But, mostly I thought of it because anytime I travel Interstate 80 for work, I stop at the Iowa 80 (World's Largest) truck stop and wander around the trucker shop.....lots of show and shine type stuff.....I found it there.
Have you thought about using an all-purpose citric-based cleaner?
I did think about a variety of cleaners ahead of time, after watching videos about the cleaning process from others. However, it came down to (like too often happens lol) I was suddenly way behind with the task. So, needing a confidently safe solution, I stuck with soap and brushing manpower. I'll be ahead in life someday....maybe.....or I could just stop jamming in so many things 😁
👍👍👍. Thank you
Thanks for stopping back! Multiple parts to come...lots of house action happening over here! Thankfully before winter. Cheers!
Upcoming siding replacement pushed me to do this, but should have done it 10 years ago! What kind/color of porch handrail should I install after my white siding gets installed?
I love houses with porches! What do you think about a green or teal vinyl handrail? It will complement the red and match your front door.
@mbergheaud I definitely would like (need) to repaint the front door....it's a little flakey and I'm energized to do it.. Would like to change away from green. A teal or pale blue could definitely look nice, striking contrast from red brick and white/black elsewhere. Appreciate the recommendation!
I’m confident you will make the most aesthetic choice. I look forward to seeing it!
I liked the video but the real problem with bolts are the hundreds of metric bolts that come with almost anything you get from China and they even have hex heads. How do we know the size of these 1/4 inch or smaller that comes with the kits like from IKEA~? Some of the heads are round, some are flat and some are countersunk. Thanks for the Info~!!
Brilliant video. Thanks for the explanation.

Have you ever made your own furniture?
You know, I haven't. I'm always moving in fast forward and would say I make a better rough carpenter than finish carpenter 😆 I did want to mill up some of those logs, and may still, but didn't really have specific plans. More that it would be fun to do/try/learn. Are you a wood worker?
@LearnedFromDad, I believe you can do it. You have the right equipment and the necessary dexterity. I'm not currently pursuing that, but I would have loved to learn. In junior college, I made a dovecote in my 3D art class. Fortunately, my partner had a strong understanding of woodworking because her dad was a carpenter. She helped me understand the diagram and the different saws needed for the proper cuts. I learned much more from her than I did from the teacher!
@mbergheaud a forestry friend (retired) of mine built a hand laid cedar canoe. It was beautiful. Something like that, which would keep me outside, would be really fun. Someday!
With regard to the Crescent pass-through socket set, I find the 150mm / 6” socket extension a handy addition to the set and the Gear Wrench extension is compatible the Crescent wrench set.
Great tip, thanks for sharing. I'm going to look into that! Cheers.
