How We Got Free Glasses in France | Watch Americans Get Eye Exams and French Eyeglasses in Paris
#Paris #France #ExpatLife
👓 It had been a while since either of us had our eyes checked, so we headed to Paris for an appointment at the eye doctor and the glasses shop to order some new glasses and sunglasses. As Americans living and working in France, we benefit from the French healthcare system, which means that affordable medical care is at our fingertips. For two eye exams, eye drops from the pharmacy, two pairs of prescription glasses and two pairs of prescription sunglasses, we paid a whopping total of 4.40 euros after reimbursement! We are so grateful that we have the opportunity to take care of our bodies and wear glasses we love at such an incredibly low cost. Come with us to the eye doctor, the pharmacy, and the glasses shop called Lunettes pour Tous to get an inside peek into the French healthcare system in action. We’ll also grab lunch at Kern and coffee with cookies at Blondie, two Parisian spots we would definitely recommend! Do you wear glasses? What’s the process for updating your prescription where you’re from? Let us know in a comment, and as always, don’t forget to like the video and subscribe to our channel!

    I've had this tab in my browser for a week and finally got to watch it today. Another fun and informative video. And oh, it breaks my heart seeing how beautiful you both look. Youth and health, I hope you guys keep that footage! And what's up with youtube? They now have these "translate" buttons in the comments? It used to be where I would practice my weak French, but at least you guys had a look a the Ecole de Garcons and I got to read the menu. But reading a comment WITH the translate, I just learned that "glass" and apparently "glasses" are kinda the same word... So what you're calling Top up is what they call "mutuelle," right? I'm still shopping around in prepartion, but WOW, I thought it just kicked in a little bit, but this video showed the full force! And why I see so many expats lamenting they wasted years not knowing about it.

      Thanks for this sweet comment and for watching our video! Definitely planning to keep the footage, we have created quite the vault of memories over the years! Not sure if TH-cam’s interface has maybe changed recently. On our end we haven’t done anything differently. Glasses = Lunettes and Verres = Lenses 🤓 Yes, top-up insurance = mutuelle 🙂

      @BobKnight-mm2ze หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@the_francofile Hey thanks for the follow-up. Definitely the translate is youtube. I watch a lot of cute animal vids and TONS of Russian and Spanish speakers do too. So that's where I first noticed it. Somehow I didn't think it would be across the board--like on yours, but it is. Might be 1, maybe 2, weeks they've been doing what they've had the tech to do for YEARS. Literally years ago they could have turned this on. But it's convenient, I'll admit that.

      @the_francofile หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi again! This will depend on your town hall and whether they have a lot of time slots available or not. On May 11th, we asked to be married on July 9th, but there were availabilities before that as well. You’ll have to check with your town hall about this!

      @the_francofile หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, thanks for watching! Different town halls will have different rules. We were required to have at least two, but no more than four, francophone witnesses. You will have to check with your town hall to see if those witnesses will be accepted or not.

    There’s no free stuff. Someone paid for that. It was either you through insurance and someone else’s taxes. There’s nothing quite as expensive as free stuff.

    • @the_francofile
      @the_francofile หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course. The glasses were free at the point of use. The price breakdowns included in the video show the portion of the real costs covered by the social security system that we pay into and the insurance that we have because of our jobs.

    • @TreenaBeena
      @TreenaBeena หลายเดือนก่อน

      Considering they are tax-paying residents of France, their own taxes paid for that too. French society as a whole, paid for it and that’s a beautiful thing.

    EXCELLENT video, Jalen and Maria! Love both your new glasses! What is your monthly mutuelle? Does it cover eye checks and new glasses, once a year? Thank you so much.

    • @the_francofile
      @the_francofile หลายเดือนก่อน

      Our mutuelle costs us 0 euros per month because my employer takes on 100% of the cost for both of us. It covers glasses once every two years for adults. We have noticed that with eye and dental care, medical professionals in France have always recommended that we have appointments about half as often as what we were accustomed to in the United States. That means a dentist appointment once a year and an eye appointment every other year for us these days. Thanks for watching!

    When you two order stuff online for delivery, are you able to get it directly to your apartment? Or do you have to pick it up elsewhere around town? Any tips or tricks for outfitting an apartment with the bigger stuff (couches, beds, etc.) without the luxury of having a car?

    • @the_francofile

      Yes, we have it delivered straight to our apartment. You can also pay extra to have it delivered to your door and not just to the front of your building if you live in an apartment. We don’t have a car and that’s how we’ve handled getting bigger items, but our apartment is furnished, so we haven’t needed to add much. There is always the option to rent a vehicle if you are able to drive in France as well!

So a major setback happened a few months back, but I'm still moving forward (Rhone-Alps), and my 1100 days of duolingo isn't "real" language learning, BUT it's better than zero, and I supplement. When I did the math on Jalen and realized he did C2 in about 4 1/2 years, PRE-France, I was shocked--and shook!

    I did TAPIF 1999-2000 and it AMAZING. My apartment was in Paris and my school was on the outskirts of Paris.That experience launched my career in Paris and led me to also teach in Asia and other countries in Europe. I worked 11 hours a week, made connections during my time off, traveled on TAPIF SALARY.

    Thank you for making this video!! I’m planning on doing a Tapif and then applying for master en alternance but the requirement for master en alternance is 1 year living in France and since Tapif is only 7 months, is there a way I can stay for 5 more months before going back to my country to apply for student visa? Thank you!!

      Hello! You’re welcome, and thanks for watching! 🙂 Since we don’t have personal experience staying in France during the gap between TAPIF and our master’s degrees because we went back to the United States to get our student visas, we can’t really personally recommend a way to do it. It will likely depend on different factors like your nationality and your visa expiry date. Regarding your eligibility to do an alternance in France without first having lived here for a year, we would suggest you check out the latest version of Article R5221-7 du Code du travail (www.legifrance.gouv.fr/codes/article_lc/LEGIARTI000033332899/2024-02-09/). This should help clear things up for you and help you justify your rights in this regard as a foreign student in France to any entity that may need it. We hope that helps! Good luck!

    Hi guys! Thanks for your insightful suggestions. I'm currently a master student in international relations in the field of Higher education (M1), and my dream pretty much is to get a job like Maria's !!! Congrats by the way ! I have a question, was it hard finding offers that comply with the 1.5 smic requirement? I guess that's the part that scares me most, but otherwise I have the chance to do 2 internships during my masters degree. So, I'l definitely going to try finding a job on the RECE permit. Merciii !!

      Hi, thanks for watching! Sounds like we have similar professional interests. 😁 I would not say it was easy to find International Relations jobs that offer salaries at or above 1.5 times the SMIC. The key is finding positions with a reasonable amount of responsibility to justify the salary (I am « category A », the public equivalent of a « cadre » in the private sector), and an establishment where it is possible to negotiate (some public institutions do not deviate from their « grille » that generally does not remunerate people fresh out of university very highly). Also, as is true in the private sector, salaries in and around Paris are often higher. Good luck!

    There was IKEA in my country too. Appreciate peacetime! And be friends with your neighbors.

    Currently wrapped in a fuzzy blanket we got at the IKEA in Madeleine, under a bunch of basic Fiskbo frames. Ain't nothing wrong with creature comforts.

    Such a wonderful, down-to-earth shopping trip. Very relatable. As the “Mom” of many college, grad school and first job kids, I really appreciate your IKEA love having shopped there many times.

    You should do a video completely in French with your French friends.

      Vlogging with friends who aren’t TH-camrs is more complicated than you might think (kind of ruins the ambiance of a regular hang out), and we’re also not too sure any of our friends would agree to be filmed. We’ll keep this request in mind though! Thanks for watching. 🙂

    Enjoyed the shopping trip - but you should have bought a second carrier bag to spread the load! In my (admittedly limited) experience, Ikea in Lyon always seems to be so crowded you can barely move, which makes it less fun.
