Why I Removed My Avocado and Peach Trees
มุมมอง 324 หลายเดือนก่อน
Who doesn't love avocado? Or a juicy, delicious peach, right off the tree? When I found out about the Aravaipa Avocado, which is a variety acclimatized to the Arizona desert, I had to have one. The thought of harvesting avocados from my own backyard seemed magical. I've also had a Dwarf Bonanza Peach tree for several years and the fruit was amazing. One summer we filled an entire laundry basket...
How Fast Do Bamboo Grow In 1 Month?
มุมมอง 1915 หลายเดือนก่อน
The May 2024 update on my backyard bamboo forest here in Tucson, Arizona. Up until now, each month has seemed to favor either the clumpers or the runners, but both types have sent up shoot here in the late spring. Also saw some unusual growth on my new Elegant bamboo that I'll be keeping a close eye on. NOTE: I filmed the video on May 1st when the Elegant only had the 2 new culms, but I forgot ...
How to Plant Bamboo in Arizona
มุมมอง 1095 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bamboo in Arizona?! The woody grass is an awesome plant for your desert yard. It grows fast, gets tall, provides lots of shade, has no natural pests, and it looks beautiful. The best part? Unlike the rest of the United States, where running bamboo can be a weed-like headache, our Sonoran soil and climate keep bamboo pretty well contained. I'll show you what you need to know to get your first ba...
April 2024 Backyard Bamboo Forest Update
มุมมอง 316 หลายเดือนก่อน
Spring has sprung and so have the runners! While most of the growth in the forest since planting has come from the clumpers, the runners have finally started to send up shoots this month. There are new canes on the Green Temple, the Golden, the Red Margin, and the Rose Temple! Also exciting, I didn't kill my two tropicals! Both the Giant Burmese and the Timor Black have sent up new canes after ...
March 2024 Backyard Bamboo Forest Update
มุมมอง 146 หลายเดือนก่อน
I filmed this on March 1st, but apparently forgot to upload it until the end of the month when I began planning for the April update. The good news is that there has been new growth throughout March and you won't have to wait long until the April video to see it. I'm currently only measuring brand new culms, so every cane that is measured in this video was not visible above the soil in February.
Backyard Bamboo Forest Growth Update - February 2024

This winter has been cold and wet in the Sonoran Desert. The bamboo have received plenty of water, but some of the tropical varieties have not faired so well. Several of the plants have put on several feet of new growth in the last month.
How to Make the Best Arizona Lemonade

Bamboo Grows in the Desert?! ...in Winter?!

Winter has officially arrived and we’re just starting to see signs of Fall. The leaves of many plants are finally changing color, while other plants have recently put out new leaves because of the warm weather. Tucson doesn’t experience seasons like much of the country and this is a great example.
How Fast Does Bamboo Grow? - December 2023 Update
มุมมอง 11710 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's been 6 months since I planted a bamboo forest in my backyard. I wanted greenery and shade, and I wanted them fast. The bamboo are not disappointing. In the last month, I've had one new cane pop up out of the dirt and grow more than 7 feed tall! I've got 15 different varieties and they're not all growing like weeds, but with so many different kinds there is always something happening.
What to Feed Composting Worms

    Can you add biochar or yeast to the food scraps or the soil to help the worms ?

    • @gschultzy
      @gschultzy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but both should be done in moderation (no more than 5-10% of the volume of what's already in the bin). Biochar can raise the pH of the bin, which could be bad for the worms if too much is added. It usually functions as grit for the worms, similar to eggshells and sand. Yeast is also fine in moderation, though you may want to deactivate it first by throwing it in the microwave for a minute. If in doubt, I find it helpful to start a small testing colony for these purposes to see how the worms react to new ingredients.

    Very american. But not lemonade. It’s basically lemon juice and sugar. You nerd to use the zest to make a lemonade. It takes a bit more effort to enjoy a real lemonade. At least this one is not a typical American recipe like “buy a pack of lemonade, put some ice into a glass, pour the lemonade into the glass, ta-da!” 😂 I make lemonade. And it takes half a day to make it.

      I have seen some people add citrus peels to their bins in small quantities, but you want to be careful about managing the PH of the compost. Acidic foods like citrus and tomatoes can throw off the balance and create unfavorable conditions for the worms. A few pieces here and there are probably fine, especially if you grind them up first, but I wouldn't throw all of the leftover rinds from making lemonade into my bin.

Our first attempt we made compost but it ended up the consistency of a thick mud,we started changing what we were putting in it & we didn't have it in a decent container,it was kept it tarp.. But we have started a new one now.. My friend has got an allotment & they have a manure pile,you should see the amount of red worms in that,it's been composting for over a year.. • @gschultzy
      @gschultzy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vzero_snexfur885 Yes, you can add worms right to your garden. You'll just want to make sure they have plenty to eat if you want them to live a long time and continue producing castings. The bag of soil may not have what they need, so you'll want to consider adding greens and browns from time to time. Here's a video with a pretty cool design for doing just that - th-cam.com/video/h9POpm-9x6A/w-d-xo.html

    • @gschultzy

      I have zero experience growing bamboo, so I’m learning as I go. Matt and Holly at the Bamboo Ranch here in Tucson have been growing since the 1980’s and they seemed confident that runners aren’t invasive here for two reasons: 1) insufficient water 2) super hard soil Both make intuitive sense to me, especially since I needed a jackhammer to dig the holes, but we’ll see. I’ll be sure to do a video if I’m wrong to share the learning.

    I like your idea with the bamboo forest. I have Seabreeze and Chinese dwarf around my pool. One suggestion I would make would be to throw about 8-12 inches of mulch around the whole area. This will keep the roots cooler and help retain water. Bamboo loves mulch and you can get it very cheap depending where you are. I get a truck load from arizona worm farm for 20 bucks 😎.

    • @gschultzy
      @gschultzy ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip! I just visited a nursery in Phoenix today that had a solid foot of mulch throughout the property and it was heavenly to walk on. Of course there's the primary biological benefits for the bamboo and soil, but it also just made the area feel so much more like a forest. It was awesome. They said they just ask local arborists to come dump their wood chips on the property, so I'm definitely going to give that a shot as soon as I've got all of them in the ground with water lines set up.

    The weather is brutal this summer. I'm observing the same for my plants in full sun, especially near radiant heat like walls and gravel. Proper irrigation only does so much for the plant. There is a product called Surround WP that is a clay powder you can mix with water and spray on the foliage. It acts as sunblock and can reduce temps by 10-15 degrees on the foliage. I just bought a bag from Arbico Organics. A little late this year as the damage has been done to my Oldhamii bamboo but a good option for future summers when we go over 105.

    • @gschultzy
      @gschultzy ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip! The goal is for the plants to get large enough that they shade the heat radiators and keep them from getting as hot, but I underestimate how tough the journey there would be. Big fan of your channel. Watching what you’ve done to your backyard has been a major source of inspiration.
