Ep. 218 IRISES FOR THE MOSES IN THE NILE MOSAIC!
Ep. 218 IRISES FOR THE MOSES IN THE NILE MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I am working on the 2nd of three Moses mosaics! I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with thinset as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti.
In Episode 218, I finish the water lilies and start the irises on the right side.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 218. Thanks for watching! See you next time.

    Julie how do you decide which technique to use, the strip method vs the contact paper method?

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My first choice is strip method, because it is much more efficient. For some of those long folds in the clothing, it seemed easier to start with the correct taper and not nip that length to fit. For the intricacies of the faces, hands and feet I needed the precision of using contact paper pattern pieces.

    Hi Julie! I love watching you create your magic! Is there any worry of the black permanent marker showing through the glass? Might be a silly question. Thanks!!

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not silly at all. It would show through if the glass had any translucency to it. The greens are pretty opaque though so I can't see it. It might fade in sunlight over time if it did show.

    I love watching your process. Some artists would tape the dry positioned irises then glue them at the same time. Do you ever do that? It seemed a lot of work to remove all the pieces and glue them individually.

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I did that with the faces on the figures since there are itty bitty pieces I didn't want to dislodge. The irises were a bit more flexible as far as positioning the petals. Placing each piece makes it easier to control the thinset that might squish up between pieces.

    I know making these videos and especially editing is a pain. I just wanted to mention each episode I’ve learned some valuable tips. I’ve come to realize the bad habit of precutting bits of glass, trying jigsaw them whenever they might fit, is NOT the way to go. I love to watch how you take the strips of glass and cut them into place. I get there but huge time saver! It may seem simple to most but an “Ahh ha” moment for me. Thank you so much. 🌸

      I'm using thinset for this exterior project. It depends on what you are making and where it will be displayed. I am not familiar with that glue, but if it is a white PVA, it might not be suitable for exterior applications but fine for interior work. It would also depend of the weight of your tessera. If you are using thick heavy pieces, PVA is not the best option.

    Hello Julie, thank you for your reply. I wondered how you trace your composition on to your blue bird board. I think you said you trace your roses and leaves off your photos, once you have done that how do your get it on to your board in the black pen. Thank you, love your work and watching your videos.

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I use carbon transfer paper when I trace the design. The transfer is fairly faint, so I then go over it with a sharpie so I can see it better.

    Love this video! Thank you for sharing. Is there a reason why you like to avoid triangle shapes in your crazy paving?

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The simple explanation is that a triangle can draw your eye which breaks up how the pieces flow.

  • @marieacoppard9236

    Hello, can I please ask a couple questions. When you draw your compositions, do you freehand draw them? Also, with the Composition of the Roses, did you have a colour photo to reference to for the placement of the colours as I noted you have a variety of colours in each Rose. Thank you so much, love watching your work.

      Hello Rupa! It was going so slowly that I did not record it. Also needed a break from all the editing!

      I really appreciate all you artists out there for putting so... much effort into filming editing adding the music n voiceovers all of which must be taking as much time as (if not more than) the mosaic itself - so I get the abstention - must have felt like a detox!!!!

      Thank you so much 😀 Keeping it simple is the tricky part. I'd love to add more detail, but it's just not practical for this project!
