  • Ep. 203 FINISHING MOSAIC FIGURE #2 + A SURPRISE!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti. The first mosaic is Moses Striking the Rock.
0:05 Recap - I show the design for Moses Striking the Rock in the desert with some people. I am working on Figure #2 this week, which is the woman in green drawing water from the spring.
0:39 I am making shadows and highlights via pattern pieces for the tunic on this woman, one section at a time.
1:02 I stick the pattern pieces on the green glass and use glass scoring and breaking tools to get the general shape. Then I nip it down with wheeled nippers until it is very close. Finally, I take each piece to the grinder to get an exact shape.
1:45 If a bigger piece needs to be divided into strips, I draw the strips on the glass and go from there.
I cut and adhere one piece at a time.
5:21 I am on the last long piece, and it will be cut into several smaller pieces. I mark it so the pieces will be staggered from the previous pieces.
6:03 Now I have the pieces, but they will fit too tightly unless I cut some down. So I choose four pieces and nip them along one edge so that I can space them out and they will still fit nicely. This leaves room for grout and makes the whole mosaic similar.
7:13 I place the pieces with nice spaces in between.
7:52 I show the line at the edge which is the end of the niche that I field verified on the fountain. I come in 1/8" for a grout line after installation.
8:10 Now I finish Figure #2 with the arms and hands.
8:39 SURPRISE! SURPRISE! I was working off camera on the baby and finished one arm, hand and the head!
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 203. Thanks for watching! See you next time.

Seeing how you use the contact paper is so helpful. It really helped me figure out how to finish my current mosaic. It has very small areas to fill in and I didn't know how to do the background without it looking sloppy. It may not look that good but seeing this will certainly make it look better than it would have without your video. Thank you for posting so many helpful videos. Your mosaics are always so beautiful and well done.

Lesson learned for me today is to cut little pieces off the tesserae in a line to allow for grout lines. Ingenious! I’ve been struggling with making the glass fit and didn’t think about that. Thank you for the tip!

May I ask how long you’ve been a mosaic artist? Did you take any formal training? I think your work is lovely and I learn so much from watching you. I very much appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. Wishing you a great week. TFS

Thanks for watching! I made my first mosaic in 2009. Mostly self taught. I started with Sonia King's book, Mosaic Techniques and Tradition. Since then I have taken a workshop here and there and a few online classes.
