  • Ep. 218 IRISES FOR THE MOSES IN THE NILE MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I am working on the 2nd of three Moses mosaics! I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with thinset as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti.
In Episode 218, I finish the water lilies and start the irises on the right side.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 218. Thanks for watching! See you next time.

I love to watch you mark and gently nip the glass into the shapes you need. I don’t find it boring at all when you’re showing us what you do in real time-I learn so much that way.

Beautiful. Purple glass is never quite the brightness my mind imagines, especially once cut. I really like how eve bluer in tone your irises read purple. TFS

Julie this is looking amazing, just so beautiful. I’ve just been making irises as well to go onto my gazing ball and finding the right depth of colour is very difficult but yours are wonderful. Great work as always. 😊

I used a tiny bit of Bullseye deep royal purple that I had leftover from the wall. It has the truest purple hue I've seen in glass. Also very $$$$ with gold in it!

I was curious how you would manage to create these irises, but you've done it masterfully. Amazing work!👏👏👏

I love watching your process. Some artists would tape the dry positioned irises then glue them at the same time. Do you ever do that? It seemed a lot of work to remove all the pieces and glue them individually.

I did that with the faces on the figures since there are itty bitty pieces I didn't want to dislodge. The irises were a bit more flexible as far as positioning the petals. Placing each piece makes it easier to control the thinset that might squish up between pieces.

Hello, I enjoy your videos. Are you using the the self adhesive mesh. You make it look so easy.😊

No. This is AR mesh and I am using thin set as my adhesive. I have it in a baggie with the corner cut off.

Hi Julie! I love watching you create your magic! Is there any worry of the black permanent marker showing through the glass? Might be a silly question. Thanks!!

Not silly at all. It would show through if the glass had any translucency to it. The greens are pretty opaque though so I can't see it. It might fade in sunlight over time if it did show.
