  • Ep. 207 WATER SPRINGS FORTH ON THE MOSES STRIKING THE ROCK MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti. The first mosaic is Moses Striking the Rock.
0:21 I show you where I'm at: almost done with the fiddly detailed people. My plan is to mosaic the rocks in the foreground and start the water once the boys arm, hand, hair and baby's feet are done!
0:58 I begin by cutting out pattern pieces for the last arm and hand. Only to discover the contact paper is no longer sticky enough to do the job. I end up tracing the pieces so I can cut them out using my scoring and breaking tools. Then I do the final shaping with my nippers and the grinder (not shown.)
2:39 I have chosen Y2120 and Y2021. The reddish tone is working and these two colors of glass have enough interest to make all the rocks.
3:05 No more pattern pieces! I'll be using the strip method.
    1. Score strips of glass.
    2. Break strips with running pliers.
    3. Use nippers to shape pieces to fit.
3:48 I start making the rocks using the strip method. I demonstrate here how I shape the pieces to fit.
4:41 Now that the first rock is finished, it is important to step back and make sure it reads as a rock and looks like I want it to. I think it looks great, so I keep moving forward.
7:46 The foreground rocks are in!
7:56 The titanium 24k gold has a lovely blue cast to it that makes for beautifully subtle tones in the shadowy parts of the water. I am able to mix in little bits of the turquiose and cobalt for some gorgeous blue sparkle. To give the shadows interest I am adding gray and black 24k gold so the titanium won't be so flat. They have a warm cast to them, but it works at scale. The white gold will be reserved for the highlighted areas.
8:59 I take after it! Starting with the spring itself. I'm laying most of the glass in vertically as that is how the fountain springs forth.
11:22 A view of the first rocks and water! You guys, it is so sparkly. I love it!!!
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 207. Thanks for watching! See you next time.

Julie how do you decide which technique to use, the strip method vs the contact paper method?

My first choice is strip method, because it is much more efficient. For some of those long folds in the clothing, it seemed easier to start with the correct taper and not nip that length to fit. For the intricacies of the faces, hands and feet I needed the precision of using contact paper pattern pieces.
