Valley Head, Alabama Photo Walk with the Nikon Zf and a Vintage Leica 35mm Elimarit-R lens
Today we go for a walk in Valley Head, Alabama and take some photos of this little sleepy town at the foot of Lookout Mountain. I chose the Nikon Zf as the camera of choice for today and paired it with my vintage Leica 35mm Elmarit-R lens via a lens adapter. This pairing produces wonderful results as you can see throughout the video.
I have really grown to enjoy finding these tiny little country towns and walking around them, taking photos and video to get some photos before they disappear forever. Small town america is interesting and needs to be documented so that future generations will know what it was like way back in the past.

This place has intrigued me for years, but till now I have never been able to actually go for a photowalk in this place. I would drive by Ferger Place and say to myself... "Self, you need to take a look in there and see what is so special"... but I have just never done it...till now. We go on a short getaway to Townsend Tennessee for some photography and come away with a couple of keepers in my book. Photos were hard to come by on this trip, but it was t still fun. I used my Nikon Zf and my Leica SL2 on this trip. I outfitted the Nikon Zf with the FTZ adapter and the 500mm PF Nikkor lens. The Leica SL2 was fitted with the 50mm APO Summicron L lens and was a wonderful camera...

Today we have a special guest on the show. Gary drove down from Chucky Tennessee (a 3 hour drive by the way) just to spend the day with your truly. I have to say that we had a great time too. We hung out at the restaurant for a while and talked "shop" about all sorts of things and then we got on camera gear like our Leica cameras. Camera gear like his Leica M11 and my Leica SL2 are wonderful ma...
26mm Lumix f8 Pancake Lens Real World Review on the Leica CL Camera

Today we go for a walk and talk about the 26mm Lumix f8 pancake L mount lens while it is on my Leica CL mirrorless camera. I walk around downtown Chattanooga a good bit and this actually fit my style pretty good. I do prefer to have an adjustable aperture control but for something as compact as the 26mm Lumix f8 pancake lens, this can be overlooked. If you want to buy me a cup of coffee (I drin...

good town for "old" architecture shots... I just picked up the Zf and added a Viltrox 40mm. good stuff that Viltrox. You missed the interesting tree at 2:58...growing out of concrete. have a good Christmas with some more lenses as presents 😆
Hi David, nice, clean little town. Thank you David.
Found one for 180 bucks mint condition. Gonna pick it up at my camera store in a few days but finally found it.
I was hoping for headshots/portraits.
Bluesteel...by David, aka Zoolander
Hahahaha!!!!
I also picked up my Leica SL2-S and it is heavy. I have Bursitis in my right arm and can't hold the heavier cameras like I used too. You can buy expensive lens but it is the camera that makes the magic work. I have better images if the lens is made for the camera system. F Mount lenses on DSLR Nikons and Mirrorless lenses for their systems. Cheers!
By placing the Non CPU lens information in only writes the info to the photos for correct Focal Length and Aperture. So we have the same adapter and can do different things but usually set the lens to f/16 or whatever is the last aperture number and the camera can adjust it in the camera. Most of the time. I tried the Nikkor 500mm E PF ED Telephoto Lens on the M8 and It didn't work out too well. LOL! Should of known not to put a lens that can block the view of the subject because the barrel being too long. I did try it by Guesstimating and Nope it didn't work. Weather has been awful in my area. Rainy for the last week. I am enjoying the cooler weather. Cheers!
No but I will now
Glad I could be of assistance!
Cheers from Poland David, lovely little lens, I really like it's rendition. I think that adapter shortens that focus distance too. I also would say i dig your hat sir! ;)
Thank you! I really appreciate your time and thoughts. I am thinking of getting a second hat soon that would be my “summer” hat but for now, it will be this one for a while.
Hey hey, you made it down to Alabama. Though Valley Head is still over 5 hrs away from my town. Man, the U.S. is big. 😂
Haha!!! Barely! But yeah, I was finally headed your way!!!
Sold off some equipment and picked up a second ZF a couple weeks ago at Competitive Camera here in Dallas TX during a Used Photo Pro buying event. This is my 2-camera solution right now when I help as a second shooter for wife's photography biz (she shoots Z8), I'm doing more hybrid video/stills now. Value to spec ratio was there for me. I even use one of the dials at least...😂 I'm looking forward to using the ZF with all my legacy Nikon glass for my own stuff. I've played around with 28, 35, & 50mm focal lengths, lean more towards the 40 for now. I carry at all times the 24-120mm F4 & 40mm F2 in my bag. I love playing around with macro and long focal lengths too, got a 100-400mm. My event/wedding roll around bag has a faster glass trinity set but I find the 24-120 gets the job done, would like that Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 but twice as much what I paid for the F4 and I've shot in some pretty dark places...light wise, LOL I think I miss the little thumb joystick on my Z5/Z6 with the directional pad on the ZF being a little lower but the Focus system is night & day with what I was using and can't go back if I want to retain my Title as Mr. Money Shot doing the fast paced stuff. I've got a cage with a right side handle on one ZF and and inexpensive grip on the other. Thanks for another video David
Thank you C2C, I do love the Zf and the more I use it the more I like it. Just yesterday, I shot a parade with it and the 50mm f1.8 S and came away with a ton of great images. Still going through them now.
I enjoyed your photo walk and talk. I'm happy with the location of the + & - buttons on newer Nikons. I'm used to them being there so on the rare day that I shoot a manual lens, I know right where to go to zoom in for focus without looking. Thanks, David!
Yeah, once you learn where they are, it isn’t too big a problem. They just are not in a location I can easily reach while viewing a composition. I did remap the front function button to engage and disengage the zoom so I can pop in, confirm focus and pop out to confirm composition a lot faster. Thank you Phil.
David I like the 35mm focal length on my APS-C cameras I have a Takumar 35mm3.5 manuel focus lens and a Pentax 35mm 2.4 autofocus lens. I let my son take the 35mm2.4 to Washington & Gettysburg last year when he took a group of his students to tour both areas. He sent me back a picture of the California Regiment monument at Gettysburg as one of the officers in the regiment was Colonel Thoma Baker who founded the city of Bakersfield CA the city I am from
That is cool. I also normally run 35mm on my CL and 50 on my full frames. I have been doing this lately to see how I would like it and so far I have.
Did you find your "beeping" issue?
No, I never did figure out what that was!!!
That Leica 35mm Elimarit-R lens is sweet...Thank you for showing it to us David
Thank you Carmine, I really appreciate you my friend.
Prefer DSLR style ergonomics. Had Nikon ZFC..was awful. 28mm very versatile. Man photographs everywhere, great historical record.
I agree on the ergonomics. That is why I run it with the grip/mount adapter by Smallrig. 28mm is just too wide for my personal tastes at this time. I do good to get close enough with 35!!😂🤷🏻♂️📸
Wonderful camera and lens commentary. Straight forward common sense discussion. Thank you for posting.
Thank you JR, I really appreciate your support.
Nice little place. Little being the operative word. :) Thanks for sharing!
Haha, you got that right!!!
thanks David- i was needing to find something like kden live for mint 22
I am working on getting a Dell Precision T7600 computer up and running with Linux next. It will be glorious if I can pull it off...lol
Appreciate this review! Found one used for $500 and so many reviews i read are trying to convince me i *have* to have the latest and greatest, so good to hear that this is still a great lens at a much lower price point.
This is a beautiful lens and produces gorgeous photos. You will be well pleased. 📸👍
Very interesting review! Thank you for posting.
Thank you!!!
It looks like the chimney is no longer used. It looks like duct tape on the top. The gutters draining to sidewalk would not be good here in Chicago since in winter, there will be a sheet of ice. Like the mural at :46 and the Mustang at 3:03.
You got it on the first try. That window in the chimney is odd… lol. Thank you George. 👍📸
Isn't this lens intended for full frame only?
I dont know, but it works great on my CL too. 👍📸
I bought this lens for $30s and was surprised somewhat at its pic.s. ?! I caught a amazing picture to my surprise of a guy on Mothers Day commiting #Suicide off the Manhattan Bridge in N-Y ?! Sharper pic. Than the memory 💯!!!!
Are you serious?!? That is a terrible day for a journalistic photo… it does need recording but I am sorry that you had to capture it. It is a great lens though, I am glad you got one so cheap too!!!
Drop Dead Serious on that #SuicidePic !!! The guy pushed off the rail as I was turning around (caught) Then I took pictures of him on the awaiting express way where Blood was everywhere !!! DOA !!! PICS were colorful and extra sharp. The only person I showed those to were a camera guy in the store .💯 !!! I shot with a Canon M50 mark 2 ?!
@@Jon-mz2wp That is incredible! Only in the city would you catch something like that as it happened... Sorry you had to witness it first hand...
Great video, had this lens sitting in my closest for the last 35 years, will give it a spin try on my trusty D3200 and see what magic happens. Thanks, Montreal, Canada.
It will be awesome on that camera. Just dont forget to enter it in the non-cpu lens section so the camera knows what is going on.
@davidsaylors 👍😀👍
Thanks, since this lens doesn't have any electronic sensors or anything like that, no need to write it into the camera, I think. I just mount it on the camera and shoot it in manual just like my old FM Camera. I do the same with several of my other manual lenses, and get good results.
Hi David, thank you for taking on the house tour. I wonder what it looks like decorated at Christmas.
I dont know, but that is a good point. I will go back in mid December and see. 👍📸
That sounds good
Snow Plows, Street Sweepers with Brushes, etc. but I have never seen a Truck Funnel Tube Hose vacuum leaves from the street. I guess to keep the water drainage are kept clear. Colder weather less overheating and better conditions to do content. Wet is the only problem. Funny thing is leaves are still on the trees. Cheers!
Thank you Randall, yeah, the wet weather is normal for our winters. We get a lot of our rain in the winters around here and so it makes for VERY grey skies and dreary days.
There is a window in the chimney! I've never seen this neighborhood. Cool! Thanks, David!
Thank you Phil, I appreciate your support and time. 👍📸
David The house has a window through the fireplace on the second floor. The cities of Tustin and Orange in Orange county CA have neighborhoods with houses from the same era in the downtown's. The city of Orange also has Chapman College in the downtown area a private college with interesting things to photograph on the campus as I have done a few photo walks though the campus . Its interesting to see the old houses mixed in with restaurant's near the college campus
I have wandered the UTC campus here in Chattanooga a couple of times but it is both like it once was anymore and now it is almost all just college buildings and none of the original architecture from what I can see.
What a wonderful neighborhood, I wish more communities were built like this. Did notice the window in the chimney...odd. It looks like all the utilities come in from the back side of the houses.
Yes. I noticed the utilities were apparently on the back alley of the houses too. Lots of this area has an alley behind the houses and this one is no different. thank you!
Your photograph at 7:51 absolutely highlights the craftsmanship of home builders of yesterday. Great video David
Thank you Carmine. Loved your video on the D1h yesterday too. 👍📸
Looks like they took out the fireplace on the 2nd floor so they could add a window. The other flue chase probably pass on either side of the window.
That’s it. Lol. I just thought it strange to see a window in a chimney. 😂
How cool! I’ve never noticed that neighborhood. Thanks for the tour!
Your welcome, I have seen the entrance signs for years but had never entered the neighborhood. I am glad it did not disappoint.
The window in the chimney is kind of odd..lol.. Beautiful houses, you got some good shots. Those old houses will still be standing when the new 2500 sq ft $300k modern house has fallen in..New construction scares me..lol..if you have not checked them out, take a look at how the new houses are being built ..Very cheap, except for the inflated price!
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! Yes, putting a window in the chimney struck me as odd too. 😂🤷🏻♂️ Why???🤣
@davidsaylors is the grand prize a 500PF? 😂😂😂😂
@@bassangler73 No. 😵
@@davidsaylors Definitely odd, probably why @bassangler73 picked up on it so quickly...but then I'm in good company since we all did.🤣 Maybe there are two separate flue lines going around window but that's a big window.
I absolutely agree with this Bass. My wife and brother-in law who are not from the states says the same. They are a bit perplexed at the quality of the new homes being built in the US now.
That one house looked like a convergence of dutch colonial and Georgian architectural styles. Great walk! Thanks.
I was blown away by the sheer variety of design and yes, I think you are on to something here. 👍📸
Tarzan At 4:41
😂
Focus peaking works very well on the Z6, it's a very sharp lens, and I got mine for free from the Nikon pro that sold me his old 810. Very impressed with the quality, and it's not that slow to focus on the DSLR bodies.
Thank you for sharing & well said , I was thinking about purchasing this lens on Ebay but after your video I have changed my mind .
It has interesting characteristics if you shoot it on film but on digital it is terrible. I have very few reviews that are negative in nature and this is the star of those. Haha. Glad I saved you the headache.
This is a good lens review David. This would be a good lens for photographing white swans in a park.
Thank you Lonnie, I really appreciate it.
justify what they bought...they miniplate field of view, shutter speed and f stop....this will debunk all those numbers. When you use a light meter there is no toggle for cropped, ff or large format
Still using the CL .... just like me. I`ve had mine boxed up and ready to go. A Q calling but then unboxed it again. It a great versatile little camera.
Yep, I can’t seem to come up with a reason to sell it. I like it too well.
I bought the NIKON F- micro 4/3 adaptor but still cannot set the aperture? Whats wrong? Please help me to solve the problem
Does your adapter have to aperture ring on it?
Reason I have not been back to Cove in 8+ years. Great video
Yeah, I have been told that there are times when it isnt so bad but I dont want to mess with it anymore after this trip. It might be better in late December for the wildlife but I dont know.
Casually smoking opus x without showing band… subtle flex 👌
Haha, at least someone caught it.
I liked the stuck water wheel shots...not being negative but in my line of work I had the urge to fix it🤣. Good shot of Mrs Saylors at the end too.
Thank you C2C, I really liked how the long exposures of the grist mill came out to be hand held, they look really good.
Hi David, looks like you were having a fun time. I love Caded cove. Great shots a fantastic area to be in. Thank you for the video.
Thank you Pam, we did have a great day even if we did not see any critters to speak of in the park. Photos were still good.
Nice video David. The music was spot on for the video also. Unfortunately down here we don’t get as much fall color as you guys. A lot of our trees stay green throughout the winter. Kinda helps we only have two months of real winter. If it gets cold in December then three.
Thanks for the kind words and I agree the music was good, almost as good as the fall colors. 😉
Congratulations on the bear photo. It will look great framed.
Congrats on the bear! I liked the sunrise mountain photo too. The best time at Cades Cove is right at sunrise. They will open the gate and you'll be there sort of by yourself for about 10 minutes before it gets crowded. :)
That’s when I go. Any other time I avoid it like the plague.
David Cades Cove traffic looks the same as summer traffic through Yosemite Valley. That's why I never go to Yosemite in the summer months I go either Spring or Fall less traffic . The fall foliage makes great pictures and the bear picture only adds to a what looks like a great fall trip
Yeah, it is just part of the park experience these days from what I have seen. Gone are the days of having the park to yourself. Thank you!
