Hello and welcome to my channel! My name is Dan Maley and I have restored numerous cars, boats, houses and RVs. Growing up in Detroit, my first auto enthusiasm began with a 67 400 Firebird and led to my ownership of 11 of these cars! I enjoyed adding options from other firebirds to this first car and I owned it 31 years before selling it. My wife and I have 7 children so my focus shifted to providing a safe driving platform. This, along with a close friend’s urging to try these amazing cars, I got hooked…bad!
31 cars later, I’ve built a number of cars using a “stock-plus”approach of adding OEM upgrades to make my cars look, feel, and perform better. This has led to meeting and learning from some of the best in the game; Robert Spinner, Ben McNally, Hussein Holland, Daniel Warsh, Steve Carile, Calvin Sonniksen, Dave Barton and many, many others have helped, inspired and encouraged me. I have never forgotten my first car and soon plan to unveil my next project, so stay tuned!

I like the wick better for desolder as well. Keep'em rolling Dan !
I’m curious if the caps are the main fault in these, or something else. I’ve never done a failure analysis, but I do have a failed one on top of my toolbox, so I popped it open. The caps don’t seem to have vented or leaked. I do have an ESR meter, so I can desolder them and test them and see what value they are. If the caps are indeed the weak point, I’d recommend using a high quality cap from Mouser, Digikey etc so you know it’s not counterfeit. 105 degree. And clean your flux residue up when you’re done. Rosin core flux isn’t highly corrosive, but it can attract moisture, dirt, metal particles etc that could cause all sorts of problems. I did find some horrible solder joints inside my failed relay, dated January of 1995!
Interesting info John; I’ll be anxious to learn more about these as I’m not an electronic expert by any means! However, my car is running well with the repaired relay, lol!
The plastic housing is degrading with father time/ cheap plastic. The ultimate or best solution is to install an external relay and leave the housing alone.
Makes sense H. Like a diagram to follow on how to if you have one?
@@handydand not at this time
Best to upgrade the wiring anyway and use a standard relay. Much better.
Thanks for watching! When I upgrade the fuel system I will run a new power cable as I did on the Laser. I added a standard relay to the as well that triggers off the original fuel pump wires.
Dan the man
Thank you!
Heres a tip for anyone looking to do this - I find that flux and solder wick works better than the suckers do, pulls the holes dry making putting the new caps in easy. Worth a shot if you're struggling getting the caps off or on.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing Chris! Chris is my good friend who shared this repair with me and gave me the capacitor info.
@@handydandthanks for the shout out. Of course, real credit goes to to that MVS post where I learned the tip myself!
YESSS! Skip the cheap aftermarket ones. Recap the one on the car, and recap a spare instead for a few bucks! Keep the spare and a compact T25 in the glovebox (I dont even keep a jumper anymore) I bought that exact same capacitor kit btw
Thanks again my friend!
Really surprised to learn that so many owners go fwd! Hope you enjoy your conversion anyway. In my country we still have used parts from Japan available, so we're capable of keeping our cars awd till now.
I think the fwd swap is more common than people think and is a great way to improve performance! Thanks for watching!
Did you replace the fuel tank vent hose? I ordered a silicone one for mine (and paid a small fortune as it came from Europe), managed to get it on without any cutting or drilling with the tank lowered a bit. Would have been much easier with the tank out!
Hi Chris! The fuel tank vent hose was/is in good shape (donor had 119k miles). Had to replace a couple of vacuum lines and rebuilt sensor wiring was all that was needed.
@handydand well if it goes I'm sure you could manage to swap it without drilling/cutting (I'm steadfastly against that whenever possible)
Great timing for the video, @HandyDan. I'm starting this same conversion on my '98 Saffy VR.
Hope this video helps you! Thanks for watching!
Being in Michigan, why not keep it AWD?
I find fwd with good tires works fine (I finished and we’ve had the worst winter in recent years and the car is very capable). I also enjoy the upgraded suspension and improved power to weight ratio! Thanks for asking and for watching!
The M56 with a limited slip diff swapped in performs better, more reliable, and still has enough traction with proper tires. Plus, AWD parts on this platform are a pain to find, they changed the system almost every year and most have to match. This platform simply wasn't well designed for AWD.
Hi Dan. Is the black roof interior original?
Yes it was pretty mint; thanks for watching!
OMG, Volvo really doesn’t want a person to try & fix anything! I was a little apprehensive about taking my XC90 master window door switch apart, the tabs made me nervous. You’ve given me the courage. What’s the worst that can happen? It’s already broke! Jewelers screw drivers work really well. Thanks for the video. Have a great day!
Good for you! And thanks for watching!
Carpet dye makes the car carpet stiffen…. Did you find that that happened in your result?
No it doesn't
No issue with stiffness. Thanks for watching!
as soon as you hear that cracking noise, check the strap. its a problem on 850 and v70 cars. the frames broke on mine too and i welded them.
Yep I had that happen and used epoxy and screws successfully to secure it.
Awesome car!!
Thanks, I really appreciate it!

Hello, I've been trying to get a broken stud out of an aluminum intake for days. It's the thermostat housing stud. It was drilled then an extractor used, no go, then I tried the mig welded a washer/nut and broke 3 of them even though the stud was glowing hot. I figure now it should come out but I'm scared of damaging the threads and doing more damage. Any thoughts please??
Those are all the correct steps to take. One thing you could do is weld a new piece of threaded rod to the existing stud and clean up the weld so the housing will go over it. Or drill out the bolt and go one size larger and re-tap the hole. Good luck; you’ll conquer it!
@@handydand Great idea welding the stud to what's there. Yes I'll conquer one way or other lol. Thank you for response and help. Cheers
I just removed the hose by loosening the clamp and leave the contraption alone.
Yep you have to pull two hoses and a sensor wire.
Your son is really moving into the newer cars
Yes my oldest son likes the xc90 platform. He has two of them!
@@handydand pay attention to sunroof drains
@ will do!
FOMOCO is what housing read, does a Ford part which means original to the car
I believe so H. The way it was falling apart makes me believe it was original.
That looks to be a complete pain in the butt. I wonder if you could pop that hose off with some pressure from a pressure tester rather than having to pry with a screwdriver.
It wasn’t all that difficult. This thermostat was on there from the start (oem) I believe.
I love my cx70
They are great cars and thanks for watching!
This is so cool
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed watching your video and working through my garage opener, slightly different model, but same craftsman label. Thank you.
Thank you, I’m glad it helped!
From outside the locked car where do you drill the hole
This work is done inside the car. To open the latch you drill from inside the car. The angle of the drill is from the front to the back with the door panel removed. Good luck with your issue; maybe get a local towing company to open the passenger door?
My bad i thought it was lost key how to unlock etc. Sorry
@ no worries!
Does 1/2 the story, the other half is to be determine. Nice work
Thanks H!
Thanks Dan !
Thanks for watching!
Do you have any more details about the brake line you removed from the AWD V70R rear suspension? Are you going to then need / use one or more brake lines from the FWD rear suspension on the S70?
On the laser build I was able to leave the awd lines, shorten and flare them to mate to the c70 rear lines. It was pretty easy. On the 98Saff, Robert and I kept the entire lines intact from the fuel rail back from both systems. However the donor s70 line was crushed slightly, so I’ll harvest what is needed from the two cars to make one good line (cut/flare). Great question!
@@handydand thank you for that information. It is very helpful. My friend and I are planning on doing C70 rear subframe conversions on our 2 x P80 V70Rs.
Glad to see you haven’t run out of things to wrench on :)
Thanks John! Lots to do as always (as you know, lol!)
Two peas in a pod lol, another good video Dan & Robert!!!
Thanks! Yeah we tend to laugh a lot when we get together! But we get a lot done!
Nice! Robert helped me with installing the new headliner on my 850R Wagon & fixed my sunroof, along with installing my new heater core. Huge help ! Robert had just gotten the Yellow T5-R wagon right before helping me - I think he said he got it in Washington State.
That's great to hear - Robert's a huge help to the Volvo community!
Nice to see the 2 amigos together.
Thanks H! Yeah we had a blast a were productive as well!
Very good time. 👍🏾
Great seeing you my friend!
But now, you have only one remote control, How do you make a copy? I have only one too and the workshop manual says that we have to go to Volvo dealer and reconfigurated all keys too. Any other options? Ty man.
There are locksmiths that can do this (none in my area though). The dealer may be your best bet. You can always ask via the FB pages or the on line forums for help as well. Thanks for watching!
I have a 1998 C70. I don't know if I have this right. It looks as though you purchased a new module with a fob that was programmed to it, swapped it out with the module that came with the car. Where does one find that kit and what is the price? Also, I found what looks to be one of the remotes that came with the car embedded into the carpeting near to under the seat. It looks like it was never used. I understand that I would need a VST2000 device to program it and that device is no longer out there, not even at dealerships. I guess I would like to at least know where to get that kit. Thanks!
I sourced my kit from a parts car I owned. Look for a partout of a same year car. You can also put up a request on the forums or even check eBay. I do not know of a source other than this. Thanks for watching!
Is there a way to remove the 2 green plugs easily from the remote module,it has me confounded?
They both have a small square button to release them. Hope that helps!
Stainless impeller? Wonder if that's a GRAF housing (more Italian). Seems like same quality as GMB/HEPU if it's old!
Hmmm. The impeller was stainless I believe. I don’t recall seeing any other names on the unit. It’s now been recycled so I can’t check it further. Thanks for watching!
What did you do that others were not successful at? Some said their carpet turned green.did you use salt? Is the secret using hot water? Berber carpet?
Thanks for the good questions; I have had no fading or other issues. The hot water is what the dye manufacturer calls for so worked on ensuring the dye and the Berber carpet were as hot as I could get them. I also used a heat gun to heat the carpet and set the dye. Also, lots of brushing to ensure proper coating. Thanks for watching!
Nice find. Wire gremlins are the worst.
Yep and this car is full of them! I’ll keep at it until she’s reliable! Thanks for watching!
BUGATTI PA10040 is the part lol
I am not familiar with them; are they reliable? Just curious because the Aisin pump has proven to be. Thanks
@handydand id never use that lol always stick with asin
It's italian also pumps wine and pizza sauce
Oh wow, maybe I should’ve kept it for pumping booze and sauce, lol! Thanks for watching!
Dan thanks for sharing I really look forward to seeing your videos
Thanks Terry! Had a rash of car repairs that we did the past month that really filled my schedule. Thanks for watching and I have more coming soon!
Nice work, of course once you take that bottle out of the cold water then it'll just get hot again. I might end up doing this method for my truck carpet, think I'll test the bottle out with hot water first see if it holds up to the heat. At those temps it could be risky.
Yep I get it; I was worried it would melt, but it held up ok. Thanks for watching and good luck in your carpet work!
Use a garden sprayer
Above all you should have measured the exact amount you took out and replaced w the same amount...
Yes and even better if you put more in!
I was thinking of doing this by building a tub and soaking it in the hot dye bath. Thanks Dan !
Interesting! That may be easier!
Did this change the texture or softness of the carpet?
Not that I can tell; thanks for watching!
thanks for the advise Dan, exactly what I needed to know :)
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
