AURORA Scrapping Update (January 14, 2025)
What is it that they don't want us to know about the demise of this beautiful ship? The City Of Stockton has refused to respond to our requests to take footage of the AURORA at the Lind Marine facility at Mare Island, where she was towed last month for the sad process of demolition. The 70-year old passenger ship, which has enjoyed a rich history and a rollercoaster ride of a career, from pioneering cruise ship, "Bond yacht" to The Love Boat inspiration, homeless shelter, drug haven and, most recently TH-cam star, will soon be cut up and melted down for her steel.     Seriously, it’s in CALIFORNIA, the most regulated state in the union, in an actual shipyard not some beach. Yes it was a pretty, small ship, in her day, but that was then. The massive amount of neglect shown in earlier videos is heartbreaking, but things on the water don’t last all that long without CONSTANT maintenance. In hindsight, maybe the previous owner(s) should have invested in new through-hull seals and fittings, instead of new paneling and look-pretty fixtures. And one last thought to those blathering on about the shipyards qualifications when it comes to the asbestos removal, let’s consider the previous owner’s qualifications when it comes to the same thing, because if you touch much on an old ship, you’re most likely disturbing asbestos. And do we need to go further into how this SUNKEN SHIP was an ecological nightmare, literally unfolding? Lubricating fluids, fuel, sewage, all of this, was released into the surrounding area, this is what happens when a vessel even partially sinks. Get a grip. Yes it could have been cool to see an actual restoration, but what was happening was nothing but lipstick on a pig. It requires tens of millions for a full or even a partial restoration, and ALL RESTORATIONS START BELOW THE WATERLINE. The Aurora’s sinking is a glaring example of why this is vitally important.

    TH-cam killed this ship. Had she been kept in the mainstream of maritime sale and restoration, she'd never have been allowed to fall so far into dereliction. The United States could easily step in and preserve this vessel, as could Germany. But it would require a community; a government, to keep her alive.

    you know Peter creating controversy will not get you any closer to the ship. EPA and OSHA would and will be all over this decommissioning/scrapping of the vessel without your commentary .

      Creating controversy is not the intent here and I appreciate your point about the EPA and OSHA. As it is a taxpayer funded project, I have legitimate questions about the process and as a historian, I just wanted to obtain some footage of the ship in this final stage from a safe distance without interfering with anyone's work.

    I would be extremely angry if I had donated things to the ship only to have those items ultimately sent to the scrapyard. The least they could have done was try to recover those items and offer them back to you.

Most likely funds were picked up after they were dropped under the table.     Her hull still mooks suprisingly prestine, even though her last time in dry dock was a long time ago. I just hope things will be removed properly and things will be preserved like her propellers. It hurts seeing her like that being German myself and knowing she once waa the post war pride when she was launched. Last remaining is now the Galapagos Legend former Helgoland from 1962.     Don’t know the history of this vessel but if it was so loved then why was allowed to get in this state and be abandoned? Again if the was such a valued vessel then why didn’t a group of people from a nonprofit purchase her and go about refurbishing her? I asking questions and not trying to be a smart ass.

      Totally get your POV. Saving ships is like saving a large structure on land. Just because people cannot raise millions to do so doesn't mean that people don't care. The ship has had a long and very complicated history that I hope to tell soon. But if you want a general overview of her career, you can Google Wappen Von Hamburg 1955 for some of the highlights. And my issue isn't that it is being scrapped, it is that any effort to document the end has been denied for no apparent reason.

      No, that was a different ship. I saw her in Vancouver for quite a while in the early 2000s. I think that ship was also scrapped.

      Well, it is a private shipyard and there are safety issues, etc. My request for access could easily have been granted by the City of Stockton but they declined. Why they don't want the ship's demise to be seen is strange since they are footing the bill and it would show what the taxpayers' money is being spent on. Responsible shipbreaking is nothing to be ashamed of. My intent is to document the end of a historic ship that has been a part of my life for fifty years.

    Not sure why you think the shipyard should give you any information on it since you aren’t a client or contract signatory. Wandering into an active work zone, on private property, you’re lucky the security guy didn’t have the police trespass you.

      I have nothing against the guard. They were doing their job and were polite about it. However, this is a publicly funded project and there should be some open accountability about the process.

    In hindsight it’s clear, the whole project should have started to bring her into the dry dock for repair and painting the hull. Quite costly most likely unaffordable for the previous owner. It’s really a pity.

      It was clear back then, too, but the costs of towing and drydocking are enormous. Also, this particular drydock didn't open until 2018, well after AURORA had found her last home in Stockton.

    The idea of restoring the Aurora was never more than a pipedream in the owner's mind. The cost to do so would realistically be staggering. Its time has come and gone.

    Unfortunately, the city and the ship's dry dockyard want to hide everything about the scraping. They don't want to pay to have it done correctly with all the legal permits, so they hide what toxic material is onboard. They will hire a low-cost asbestos remover who has no issues cutting corners. They figure what is not known to the public won't hurt them. And, sadly, the US cares nothing about saving history.

    I sailed on the Island Breeze when it was the Carnival Festivale in 1979. One of the best memories in my entire life. I was 16 years old.

      The City representative wanted nothing to do with this ship and from her lack of response to my inquiry, I think she just wanted the entire situation to go away.

      That's the narrative certain people were pushing. Rather than acknowledging the owner bit off far more than he could chew and could never raise the necessary money to actually "save" this ship.
