There are two fundamental processes at work in stuttering: The act of stuttering causes the person to have experiences that affect him emotionally in unpleasant ways. This causes him to fear speaking. This fear increases his emotional stress and the physical tension within his body while speaking, which causes his stuttering to worsen. It’s a vicious circle. The person can easily develop beliefs and perceptions about himself, and emotions, because of his stuttering, that become a greater problem for him than his stuttering is. Those beliefs, perceptions and emotions may be low self-confidence, sense of inferiority, shame, etc. Even psychological disorders such as depression, or some form of anxiety. These can easily cause the person’s stuttering to worsen, indirectly or even directly, and so here is another vicious circle.

I have stuttered all of my life, and am now 71. As a child, my stuttering was more severe than that of the average stutterer my age. My stuttering worsened in my late 20’s, due to the emotionally stresses of being fresh out of school and trying to get a job in a severe national economic recession. So I know what you are going through. Given the severity of your stuttering, I suggest that you seek medical attention and obtain some type of medication for anxiety (e.g., Paxil).

I have stuttered since early childhood, and am now 71. The severity of my stuttering has greatly diminished. Here is what I have learned, from my own experience and extensive reading. Most of the people who begin stuttering in early childhood were born with a biological predisposition to stutter. (Perhaps genetic, neurological, blood flow within the brain, or some combination of these). Whether or not such a person BECOMES a stutterer, and its severity, depends upon a variety of factors, such as the severity of the biological predisposition, the parenting abilities of the parents, the degree to which they have educated themselves about raising children who stutter, overall conditions within the home, bullying at school, and other sources of emotional stress. If a person has stuttered since childhood and still does by his early 20’s, the continued stuttering and related experiences will probably have caused mental health disorders (e.g., depression, generalized anxiety, PTSD, some type of personality disorder). Those disorders will make the stuttering worse. I developed PTSD, and know this all too well. Only professional help from a psychologist or psychiatrist can effectively treat a mental health disorder. ONLY AFTER that disorder has been sufficiently treated can the person’s stuttering improve to a substantial degree, regardless of whatever type of help the person is given. For speech therapy to be effective, it must be given by a speech therapist who has been trained to treat stuttering, which few are. Whether or not you receive speech therapy, you need to do three things: accept yourself, like yourself, and take deliberate steps to build self-esteem. I know this by very, very hard experience.

Hey my name is Alexandra too. People just call me Allie. I'm totally blind, and I have a stutter too. You're definitely much braver than me, and being able to have the confidence to film yourself stuttering. I hate my stutter so much. Keep doing what you're doing. Maybe one day, I'll have the courage and bravery to film myself stuttering or something. But like I said, I hate my stutter, and I guess I just wouldn't want people laughing at me and all that, so maybe that's why I don't really film myself talking much.

Hey! I had an almost unintelligible stutter as a kid and went to speech therapy a lot, as I'm sure you did. There was a guy in my class at one of the schools I went to who sounded just like you, he was using his throat too much to try to speak and he showed improvement from speaking more from the teeth as the speech therapist explained it to us. Is that the sort that you have? (We had group and individual practices idk if that's normal.) I speak almost fluently now, I just had to slow down and basically build the muscles needed to speak instead of slamming through the words at a rapid pace as I'm sure you've been told doesn't help lol. I can see how learning asl could help with a bad stutter to communicate, it'll help pace words and calm you down when speaking to someone who does know asl, and make lapses in time with stutters more manageable. What sorts of vocal exercises do you do if you don't mind me asking? I was trying to learn how to sign "stutter" in asl, I just randomly got curious of it and stumbled across your video!

I think stuttering is caused by a traumatic event between the ages of 2-7. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist I have found the cause of 100% of my clients. anything from a dog barking in a child's face, to a child seeing some one get shot. This is the spectrum that I have worked with. If any one has any questions about finding the cause of your stutter, please let me know. I think if you can find the cause, you can get to the cure. Thank you for your time

@randallscott1643 1 year ago As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I have worked with PWS. I think if you can get to the cause of your stutter, you can get to the cure. I have found the cause of 100% of my clients. Stuttering is caused by a traumatic event between the ages of 2-7. Any thing from a dog barking in a child's face, to a child seeing someone get shot! This is the spectrum that I have worked with. A lot of people can't remember what caused their stutter. But the subconcious remembers everything. So with Hypnotherapy it is easy to get to the traumatic event. Now that you understand what caused the stutter, now you can let it go from your mind and body. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your time.

As an ex-stutterer myself, I would like to recommend a book by Lee Lovett entitled, How to Stop Stuttering & Love Speaking. It’s the best book I’ve ever read and it’s helped me in so many ways than one. His WSSA online program is equally fantastic. I hope it can have a great effect on you as it did me and countless others. All the best. All the best mate
