Alex Twinspark's One Shots - Supercharged NB1 MX5, As Good As It Sounds?
We're starting something new here with the Twinspark channel: Twinspark One Shots, where we take a car from one of the monthly meets and film my first impressions on my first drive. To start that off, we have my good friend William's supercharged Mazda MX5 NB1. Extra suspsension, extra power, extra noise, and still none of the ABS, is it as good as it sounds?
As ever, full thanks to the wonderful Joe Hill and Blue Multimedia for filming and editing work, and for the idea, as Joe really is the half of all this that actually keeps the cogs moving, I’m just the ADHD riddled pretty face that sits in front of the camera and says a load of nonsense, so really big thanks as usual to Joe for making sure things happen!

We're back! With a 2.5 Alfa Romeo 156 Sportwagon Veloce with Leather Trim, specifically, my 2.5 Alfa Romeo 156 Sportwagon Veloce with Leather Trim! It's our longest and most in depth review yet, and we are very proud of it, so we hope you'll enjoy it too. For anyone after a mod list, I unfortunately don't know what bodykit or short shifter kit has been used, however the intake is the larger OEM...

    I own an MR2 ZZW30 as well, I daily it as well There's a third cupholder in the center, behind the parking brake. I advise to use that with hot drinks or when you want to use the radio Not sure what you mean with "bitey", I've pushed the car to its limits plenty and I never felt like I was in any danger of losing control suddenly Also, I recommend polishing your headlights, makes them look like new and will add a lot to the overall look of the car

      So I sold this car over a year ago now, and I can follow up on some of these points. At this stage, the headlights had actually gone through some restoration as they were completely ruined, unfortunately the lacquer I'd used to seal it was of low quality and failed, hence why they ended up looking like this after a few short months. As for the bitey-ness of it, I discovered more and more the longer I owned that car just how truly knackered an example it was. Every bushing had failed in the suspension, the shocks were all failing and had all failed entirely by the time I sold it, the exhaust kept breaking, and many other issues kept cropping up with it. It was largely the fact it was such an extremely poor example of the marque that lead to my impressions of it. I would like to one day do another review of the MR2, this time with a genuinely good example. I also don't recall there being a third cup holder in mine, not sure what happened between our two examples there, perhaps it was an optional extra or something similar Hope that clears up some points!

    This car isn't about hard pulls and racing Fiestas on dual carriage ways, it's a driver's car made specifically for back road high rev driving. It's perfectly poised and it's beautifully engineered. If you're just looking for point and shoot, put your foot down 'driving' then it's not for you. Its all about throwing yourself round corners and staying glued to the road. The steering is a little detached I agree but if you truly know how to drive it rewards your effort.... If you know you know

    7 Previous keepers, and 20 years old.... its not doing bad for a rough old girl. If it seems slow put a new genuine Denso MAF on it, its a very common problem on these that they under read air volume and thus lack power. The handling on these at the proper track limit is what makes them addictive.

    I totally recommend an mr2 mk3 as a first sports car, it was the first car i bought for myself and find it very intuitive. The back end flicks out easily... but only when you tell it too. my friend has an mx5 and needs to drive a lot more aggressively (and dangerously) to get the car to slide. since the weight is in the back of the mr2 the momentum of the slide is easy to predict and feel. However if you drive past your limits it will make you pay for it... moral of the story don't drive past your limits and you'll have more fun in an mr2!

      Same situation with this example. It spent its entire time under my ownership having some issue or another, and it's constant exhaust issues (i literally replaced the entire exhaust system and it all broke again) has actually caused me permanent hearing damage, so that's fun. It appears to have been scrapped by the next owner, and honestly, good, it was a collosal problem child and I don't think remotely worth the money it needed to be saved. One day I will give another ZZW30 a go on here, and that one will hopefully be in very good condition so I can enjoy it properly

    always wanted an mr-s, and this video describes it pretty well. One of the best videos about the car, instead of specs or "its slow compared to other gens" its about the actual ownership of it

    • @alextwinspark8289
      @alextwinspark8289 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers mate, appreciate it. Funny thing is they always get derided as slow compared to other gens, to my knowledge its only the SW20 turbo that's faster to 60, ZZW30 is generally the quickest, and one of the main reasons it's top speed isn't that high is because soft top aerodynamics sort of kill it dead when you get up toward 120. There's definitely advantages to the other gens, namely practicality, especially on the SW20, but the ZZW30 is honestly a proper sports car. Regardless of the fact its only 140 brake, it will test you if you push it, it's the sort of car that expects you to learn how to drive it and requires a bit of respect from you, and I kinda love it for that. As I said in the video, having driven a number of MX5s, while they give you a lot less interior space, the trade off is you can get in them at pretty much any skill level and drive them fast no issues, the ZZW30 is just that bit more skittish and a bit less conformative, and it means tou have to improve to use it, and I respect that a lot

    • @pottasium7117
      @pottasium7117 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alextwinspark8289 well, since i'm used to riding a motorcycle as my daily. Im both used with the lack of cargo space and lack of how do i word this: "autopilot" type of driving experience? in which you basically just let the car drive itself. Comfort in a car is always a welcoming edition, but oddly enough its one of the major reasons in why i dislike modern cars, i find them too couchy and lacking substance for lack of a better word. Was originally thinking about an NB but those cost pretty much the same if not more locally. Also the car being rear/mid engined gives bragging rights and preferable driving experience (atleast engine sounds-wise) . As for the opinion on separate gens: aw11: a real classic, dream car. But sadly nowadays its more of a collectors item if anything. Sw20: not my type of car, mainly due the late 90s amereican-esque styling, but its probably the most practical of them all. Also its probably easiest to upgrade. Zzw30: "celica but wants to murder you", probably best chassis, but toyota thought it was a great idea to put an economy car engine in it, also it lacks the popups which is a major turnoff point to a good portion of mr2 fans. Albeit, it is somewhat underpowered, i dont really think that's too bad, its a good amount of kw/hp for the car, and worst-case you can swap out the 2zz pretty easily

    • @alextwinspark8289
      @alextwinspark8289 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pottasium7117 I forgot to mention it in the original video, but I think the 1ZZ is right for the car, majority of drivers kinda suck and like I said this chassis can bite, so it makes a tad more sense to me that they gave it the more approachable engine, but I wish they'd done a 2ZZ version and called it the T Sport, or given us a turbo variant or something, it just seems a wasted opportunity, I've been told they didn't due to an ongoing agreement with lotus, and from what I've head 2ZZ swapped MR2s are very similar to the Elise in driving feel, so maybe there's some credence to that. Personally, my main issue with the MR2 roadster is the Roadster part, I get why they did it, they wanted to get more of the MX5 market, but I'd rather a coupe style so I can match the low weight with better aero, so if I want that I'll have to get creative with a welder. We will see how that one plays out over time I guess. The styling on the ZZW30 I also get, it's a bit of a weird one but it's one I've personally come to love, the more I researched them as an option the more I came to like them, they're quite a pretty little car, it's design is very proportional and I quite like that myself

    • @pottasium7117
      @pottasium7117 ปีที่แล้ว

      fair enough. I think similarly. That being said, i'd love an aw11 ish spec on the zzw30. A 1zz engine, but with a supercharger, doesn't have to be anything too fancy or run too much boost, just maybe that and some additional trim to specify the package. As for the design, im pretty fond of it, reminds me of the gen 6 ford fiesta i had (it was a facelift, top spec last model production year pack.) . That being said, it looks a tad too basic for my liking, would put something like enkei rpf1s on it and the jdm sideskirt/lip bundle (nothing too outrageous like a widebody or 2000s style stuff. just a little flare)

    • @alextwinspark8289
      @alextwinspark8289 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pottasium7117 yeah mines not going to stay stock forever, it'll definitely be getting new wheels, a little bit of a drop, a spoiler of some kind among other things. • @alextwinspark8289
      @alextwinspark8289 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps that was the wrong wording, what I feel about the two is the MX5 is superbly easy to drive, it telegraph's everything its doing to you loud and clear and is very predictable, the MR2 however is a bit more sharp as you say, which often makes it a bit less predictable, it's a bit spikier, it's a bit more raw, as a result its much more likely to catch you off guard if you haven't got your dukes up. That was more what I meant, apologies if that wasn't clear on the video!

I like what you've done with the coin holder 😂 Totally agree with the fact that MR2 MK3 should not be someone's first RWD sports car. I've had MX-5 and driving aggressively in the rain was not possible, on the MR2 it's totally out of the question. You've to be very disciplined and mindful of it, otherwise it's a danger to you and anyone else on the road. Likewise, I absolutely fallen in love with the Racecar look and feel of this car.
