Caving in Skaha

Cave in Skaha, Penticton. Fairly easy with ropes on all the steep sections. It should take less than an hour to complete, with about a 20 minute approach from the North Skaha parking lot. Tightest section is the end, with the rest being fairly roomy. I ran onto a group of three midway through the cave, and they helped film the exit squeeze for me. Mt Sir Donald. Took about 12 hours from the bivy site below the col. Descent took around the same time as it took up, with a lot of the time spent routefinding on the west face bypass descent. Don't follow the line that is put up by the national park descent guide, follow the cairns instead. Most rappels were 20-25m. Cost 10 bucks for the national parks pass, and another 10 to camp at the bivy ...

Hiked on July 30th. B-S Col was still in, but the top was melting fast. Easy snow travel to the base of Pigeon with very obvious crevasses to avoid. Up to the base of Pigeon there were no crevasses, and no snow on the route. No rappels, except for the B-S Col. Drove up the morning of the 29th at 5AM, got to the parking lot at 5PM. Took 3 hours to reach Applebee camp from the lot. Woke up around...

Mt Robie Reid on August 29th, 2021 Elevation Gain: 2755m Total Time: 14:34 (including sitting in the car for 20 minutes) Length: 27.3km A little over 14 hours car to car. I ended up scrambling to the side of the first chimney crux, likely low 5th class. There's a water source up past the tarns about 1500m up that has runoff from the glacier. Bring a headlamp. dont try that last bit at home boyz and girls wow man your amazing
Amazing
Beautiful
You’re beautiful, Liam
Such a wonderful video. No blah blah, just hiking. Wonderful music. You had to have climbed it at least twice setting and recovering your camera. Great drone shots as well. Amazing.
Thank you! I much prefer when people point the camera away from themselves too. For this video I had actually hiked it twice. The second time I had my friend film me with the drone on the pink slab. Just had to make sure I wore the same clothes!
Beautiful adventure
Thanks! The larches are gorgeous up there
Seriously impressive video! Used it as a guide for summiting myself on the 12th October, started and finished in the dark.
Thank you! Glad it helped. Honestly once I was in the clouds I randomly went upwards, definitely not the proper path! Was there much snow up there that late in the season?
@@BCHiking Was crystal clear for me and we still chose a random route getting up the rock wall towards the golden door. Ended up discovering the gulley with the ropes after we were already on top. There had actually been some light snowfall Wednesday night but was mostly gone with the heat of the following days, other than that the only snow was the glacier to the east on the final approach!
Damn lucky! I didn’t even end up seeing the proper way on my way down. Glad you had a great time out there!
what are you using to get your camera to follow you
In this video, the iFootage Shark Slider Nano! It's a 2 axis motion controlled slider, but occasionally I'll use my DJI Ronin gimbal to follow me in activetrack. The slider has no follow function, but I manually set the timings of the movement, so I'll count in my head the seconds and speed up/slow down depending on how close I am to the end of the slide.
@BCHiking Thats super cool! You don't find it too heavy to hike around with?
It’s heavy. With all my camera equipment (camera backpack, tripod, slider, gimbal, lenses, batteries, nd filters, photo camera and drone) it can get up to 15-20ish extra lbs of weight. I’m a decent amount slower with all that equipment (plus the time to go back and forth to record) so usually I’ll film stuff I’ve been to before and I’ll allot a lot of extra time to filming. I’ll also pare down the kit a bit depending on the objective. I’m usually a bit behind in my estimations so I end up coming down in the dark for ones I’ve never done before that I decide to film (Sir Donald, Pigeon Spire, Armchair). I’ve thought about bringing less and being lighter but when I’m motivated to make a video, I want it to be the best version that I can possibly create at that time. I could just upload GoPro/iPhone footage but I’m personally not interested in seeing that myself, and wouldn’t be excited to edit the footage.
Amazing video and commentary! what gear did you use to shoot this video please?
Thanks! I used a Blackmagic Pocket 4K with the Lumix 8-18 and 12-35. I have the Peak Design travel tripod with the IFootage Shark Slider Nano 2 axis motion controlled slider with a fairly lightweight Smallrig ball head mount. Then for ND’s I have the NISI IRND’s 3 and 6 stop filters (most Blackmagic’s suffers from IR pollution pretty badly). For audio it’s just a Rode videomic NTG on the top.
Man the climbing shots are incredible. A ton of work I imagine with the downclimbing. Hope the aglo blows this up some day.
Thank you! Yeah probably added an extra 3-4 hours filming
What’s up brother
Boy oh boy where do I even begin. Brandon C... honey, my pookie bear. I have loved you ever since I first laid eyes on you. The way you summit the most difficult hikes in SWBC. Your unnerving climbing skills, and your flawless videography. I would do anything for you. I wish it were possible to freeze time so I would never have to watch you stop hiking. I would sacrifice my own life it were the only thing that could put a smile on your beautiful face. You have given me so much joy over the years. I remember when you first summited Robie Reid, watching that video changed my life forever. Then you completed the Howe Sound Crest Trail in one day, and I couldn't believe it. I was crying, bawling even, and I heard my glorious king exclaim these words, "Hey there, thanks for watching the video. I thought I'd take some time at the end here, so you can get some information if you're looking for that". Not only have you changed the hiking scene of SWBC and the world forever, but you've eternally changed my world. And now you're posting less, but still the goat, my goat. I love you pookie bear, my glorious king, Brandon C
You can call me pookie bear anytime. I need to make an SWBC hiking onlyfans
Great video Brandon!
Thanks!
as a climber and lackluster videographer I am aspiring to start filming my missions in the mountains, what alwasys stumps me is how much effort it will be to get the shot, and the danger thats added. I must say man well done, the effort for the shot and the wuality of shots is great stuff!
It’s a lot of extra effort for sure. But it’s all worth it when you get nice comments like this one :)
Very Detail Video! Thank you for sharing with us!
Thanks! Hope the information helps
Really great edit man. Well done
Thanks man. Hope you enjoyed
Thanks for your amazing content!
You're welcome! Glad you appreciate the effort haha
Love this! Epic stuff. Looking forward to the next one. :)
Thanks! I'll get it out in a few weeks
Wow. As a hiker myself I need to say your footage looks impressive. Especially taking into account that some are saying it's solo made
Thanks! The equipment is heavy but makes for better footage than what I usually see online. And yeah all solo unless I'm hiking with a buddy!
your content is so good man.
Thanks man. Sometimes my stuff gets heavy but when you leave nice comments it makes it all worth it :)
Nice one man, keep it up, can't stop watching your adventures...
Thanks! I'll try to get more videos out, but they take time
6:31 beautiful shot
Yeah! I noticed I could see my shadow on the ridge line, so thought it looked cool haha
beauty
Thanks Rob. Wanna do the West Coast trail or Golden Hinde on the island next year?
@@BCHiking yes absolutely
Wow! You finally updated the channel, this is awesome! I love the open-gate video. Was it shot on a Panasonic camera?
Thanks! I got a new camera, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6k Full Frame. Have been sort of considering the Panasonic S9 for this type of stuff, it would be a lot lighter but not sure of the image quality of that tiny cam.
this is which camera? looks fantastic! we should do something together :)
Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K Full Frame! Just got it recently, and have paired it with the Canon 16-35mm F4. And sure if you like scrambling I'll be doing lots more next summer
@@BCHiking oh wow that's quite dedicated to bring that out there! Yes I may be in canada next summer (currently Arctic sweden filming paragliding hike n fly adventures) I sure do like a scramble :)
@@JamesFromCanada Sounds super fun!
Another fantastic video. The shot at 3:28 was unreal!
Thanks! They were fun sections to go up and down for the camera
@@BCHikingHave you ever checked out the Crown couloir route? It’s a class 4 scramble up the north face of Crown Mountain from Hanes valley, seems like it would be right up your alley. Anyways, I can’t wait to see what you climb next!
Yup! Check out the end of my video, I have a preview of when I did it last year. I just have to sit down and edit it now
@@BCHiking haha i totally skipped over the ending part. Excited to see it!
Your videos are so well done for a solo creator. I love seeing you get after it! If you're up there again, it's only a short jaunt to Spearhead Peak from the backside of Blackcomb!
Yeah I'll probably go up there next year with my friends who have the summer edge card. Won't sleep in next year so I'll hopefully have time to do Spearhead too.
@@BCHiking Yeah it's tough with the race to get back to Gondola. I did the loop summiting blackcomb then spearhead then back down DOA in about 5 hours. Crazy to hear you did this in 5 hours AND filmed it! Beastmode lol
@@saulsigalov Haha it goes by fast when you don't have to faff with ropes
I’m glad to see another video of yours in my feed, it’s been too long. Your videos are so well done. Loved the music in this one. This summer my friend and I, along with his two older boys and my oldest son did Sun Peak mtn. And close to summit on Mt. Severide in the Monashees (we live in the Okanagan). I would highly recommend getting up to Monashee Lake and climbing Severide and the Pinnacles. They are 8500’ + and beasts! At least for us they were. You’ll probably just have fun!
I used to ski as a kid at Sun Peaks! Would love to get up there again, so I'll add Monashee Lake with Severide and the Pinnacles to the list.
What did you use to capture the audio?
Hey! I just used a rode video mic NTG mounted to the top of the camera
i had no idea that west ridge can be scrambled with no trad gear. Bro is a boss beast!!!!
Haha lots of people were scrambling it that day. Had some guy pass me at the BS col and by the time I was halfway to pigeon he had climbed up and down and was on his way to solo the Kain route up Bugaboo Spire
AWESOME!!!
I have done black tusk scramble to its false summit, is this scarier? thank you
About double the length, and maybe double the difficulty in scrambling? Not an easy one that’s for sure
@@BCHiking oh geez, really??
A big step up from black tusk imo! Between the possible glacier travel, distance and remoteness and route finding I’d say this is on a similar level to Robie Reid in difficulty. Less scrambling but more elevation gain!
@@BCHiking ok but specifically the scrambling from west summit to the main one how difficult is that compared to say the black tusk chimney?
@@brookmc5076 Hmm. Hard to compare. The scrambling in the Black Tusk chimney is easy, but loose. The scrambling to the main summit of Castle Towers was more solid, but I'd say it was harder. Maybe a bit harder than the West Lion scramble, mostly from the routefinding.
Hey Brandon! I was trying to look for a way to contact you but couldn’t seem to find anything. I wanted to ask you some questions about the cave as me and some buddies are thinking of checking it out! Is there anywhere I could send you a private message like instagram or Facebook?
Sure, my Instagram is brandon_crema. Feel free to send me a message!

Great work!! What camera do you use?
Thanks! I used a Blackmagic pocket 4k with the Lumix 8-18mm.

FYI, BC Parks has removed the free chicken wire to wrap your vehicle that they used to keep at the parking lot. Make sure to bring some of your own!
Looking to make a trip out there it would be sick if you could give me your route map or beta for the Eastpost
@@Mason11717 Hey! I didn't record a GPS file this trip, but it's very straightforward from the campsite. You continue up the hill past the lake where you get water, and go up the gully. Then just scramble up the, and skirt around the opposite side (side of the mountain that's further away from applebee) then go up another (looseish) gully to reach the summit.
@@BCHiking ok sweet thanks and can it be done in a long day?
Car to car
@@Mason11717 Yeah it wouldn't be unreasonable to do so! The drive in is about an hour from the highway though, so make sure to factor that in too
FYI, BC Parks has removed the free chicken wire to wrap your vehicle that they used to keep at the parking lot. Make sure to bring some of your own!
Love you edits. Thank you for making these.
Thank you for watching!
Lots of drama, but I can tell you're an inexperienced scrambler/climber just fishing for "likes". You tell people to wear a helmet, but you're too cool to wear one yourself? Thanks for the advice, bro.
You should wear a helmet. Thanks for watching, Mr experience!
He's also holding his ice axe backwards on the glacier... not much point carrying one if you don't know how to self arrest
Haha yup. The pick was gone. Hope you were entertained
Very informative for me, can't wait to hike the trail next month. Any bear sighting? I might need to rent a spray just in case. Thanks!
Didn’t see any bears when I went, but I know they’re in the area!
going to visit BC mid July just to do this hike.. going to make short and sweet.. any thoughts on this route during that time or, anyone wants to do this on the same date?
How long did it take to get to the peak from the start?
I think around 6-7 hours
Great video! love your videography work! what camera slider you used for this?
Thanks! I used the IFootage shark slider nano. It’s a 2 axis slider and I put it on the Peak Design travel tripod
Bucket list hike unlocked 😮
It’s pretty good! One of my favourite hikes in the Garibaldi area
That is heaven
Felt a little hellish on the boulder fields below the summit haha
@@BCHiking yeah I can imagine, how long are you hiking on boulders for?
@@P_I_geon_B0y Only about an hour and a half. The short scramble at the end makes up for it though!
Nicely done, it's a good thing you didn't leave your climbing shoes in the car, they could have been eaten by the porcupines. Nicely protected though on the back of your pack.
😂
AT what point were you using the rope for this scramble? Awesome shots, looking to do the Bugaloo's this spring
Was going to use it to rappel the BS col for pigeon but ended up not using it at all and just did this hike instead
Buddyyyyy... this is absolutely insane!! Would you ever attempt Opal Cone to Garbaldi Lake?
Maybe, would have to suss out the route first. I’m more interested in Mt garabaldi before the ski resort gets built on it!
