No, you need good psych nurse and or overall psych inpatient/outpatient experience before taking on that walk/journey. Psych is a calling not to be confused with the "BOOKSMART" side of medical care. Psych is more of an ART than it is an actual science. As a Nurse Practitioner and a well known NP with amazing psych background/experience- not to toot my own horn but if you really want to excel at anything get your feet wet first.

Definitely update us in October! I'm a PMHNP & I took my first locums assignment fresh out of school. I work in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient. It's an ongoing assignment. I work remote 3 weeks out of the month & in office 1 week out of the month. I would have been there 1 year this coming February. I really want to get inpatient experience to be well rounded, but I know most locums may want previous in patient exp., but I have zero. I'd be open to coming to that facility over the summer next year if you deem it a good place to work. I want to learn more & I can only see so much in outpatient.

It’s hard to live with strangers especially when you need to destress and get prepared for the next day. The company needs you list your demands and don’t settle for nothing less. Your mental health matters.

Hi. I enjoy your videos and have been following your journey. However, I disagree with your opinion in this video. The school you go to for your NP degree matters. NPs are dealing with people's lives and bodies (in a similar manner to what physicians do), which requires an intricate amount of knowledge. Patients and disease processes are very complex. Going to a rigorous/challenging program is essential for getting the training necessary to meet the everchanging needs of patients. Going to a program that has open-book tests, is self-taught, fully online, and with limited/no admissions standards does not prepare one to adequately take care of patients. Myself and members of my family would refuse to receive care from an NP who went to fully online schooling, because the knowledge deficits are often apparent. The NP field is becoming saturated because so many new NPs are going to online, for-profit schools and taking the easy way out; instead of doing what is right for their current/future patients and attending reputable programs that will adequately challenge/prepare them for the NP role. What is worse is that people are going into fields with the most vulnerable patients (psych/mental health) for the money, lifestyle, etc.; not for the passion/love for working with this population of patients. Full Practice Authority (FPA) never needs to happen, especially with the tragic state of NP education and the NP profession. Thank you for your video and I hope you are able to provide appropriate care for your patients.

I’ve been a nurse for 4 years, not in psych. Do you think it’s necessary to get psych trained experience before going to pmhnp school?

When I had my very first anxiety attack I didn’t know what was going on because I thought I was having a heart attack. It’s like mines always made my chest hurt. I kept going back to the hospital and then a younger PA told me it was all in my head and nothing was wrong with me and she did not believe what happened because in her exact words “I’ve worked with patients like you”. It was sad because she was a younger woman of my skin color. Idk if it’s just me but I felt more comfortable and relaxed when I dealt with older physicians etc. I give anyone a chance young or not but it just all depends on the situation. Your mental health matters too whether you’re in the medical profession or not and I know healthcare professionals deal with a lot but it is a way to speak to people without making them feel bad about themselves.

May I just start off by saying how much I truly appreciate your honesty. Also, your hair and skin is flawless!! Working in mental health has been my passion. I’ve dealt with plenty of different ppl coming up and baby trust me I know I am not licensed to give them medical advice but if I can help in any way, I do. We all have a story to tell it just depends on if you’re willing to go through with it and what is the outcome goal. I have a long ways to go but getting started was the first part. I am currently taking prerequisites in Pre-Nursing then going on from there. My current state is Georgia and they ain’t making the funds here but the schooling isn’t too bad. Florida is another one of my favorite places but we will see. I am looking into to traveling tho but I do dislike when they’re wanting you to live in these places when you want to do remote. I graduate in two weeks with my PMHNP I live in NJ is it possible after passing my boards to get endorsement in NY . I have no desire to work in NY because the pay is low.
