A giant Wartsila V16 engine running
Thought it would be cool to share this monster! This is the natural gas generator at the Gainesville regional utility that powers the University of Florida hospital. It is capable of running the entire hospital complex during a total blackout. Right now it is half load and producing about 3.5 megawatts of electricity. It can instantly double that if needed. This hospital WILL NOT lose power!!

    Can you help me out with a question I’ve got the older model with the two points. Mine has two wires but I don’t know what coil they go to. Does the top gun go to the right or left and does the bottom one go to the right or left. If you could tell me that that would be amazing. I had it running at one point it stopped. I fucked with it. Unfortunately sorry for my French, and now I have no life

    One question I have is I have a battery terminal cable coming off of the starter as well as one coming off of the frame and have no idea what these are supposed to be attached to I'm guessing maybe they had a battery hooked up to it somehow? It only has 46 hours of original run time on it and the gasoline and it smells like it's from the 60s

    I know this video is 6 1/2 years old, but I am just now watching it, and others might also. Anywhere, where the crank still turns and you have the engine torn down this far, loosen all the valves and apply compressed air to each cylinder using a compression gauge hose [don't forget to remove the valve stem at the bottom of the hose.] That might raise the head, or you could hydrolock the engine-fill each cylinder with liquid and install the spark plugs. Then spin the engine over. That should at least break the head/block seal.

    Can you please explain more about running 3 phase on single phase power? Do you have a link that would help?

    • @The2006rubicon
      @The2006rubicon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! This is called a rotary phase converter. What this does is feed single phase power into two of the three leads of a 3 phase idler motor which powers one of the 3 windings inside normally. you then connect a capacitor between one of the hot legs and the unconnected third leg of your 3 phase motor, this will cause it to start turning on its own, without it the motor would just sit there and hum. This is the magic part, As this idler motor turns, it sets up a rotating magnetic field which then "fills in" the 2nd and 3rd phases, which can be thought of as nothing more than 3 single phase power streams offset by 120 degrees. You can then run any three phase equipment off it by connecting your equipment to the 3 idler motor leads. The values of the capacitor needed are determined by what you connect to the idler, its set by merely adjusting the size until the amp draws on your load are all the same. This one is running about 30 microfarads. (One tip- DON'T test run your idler without a load when you're setting up the capacitor, you can get really really high voltages if its too big! Start small, around 5 uF (uF is the abbreviation for microfarad, but the fun slang name is a "puff"! ) enjoy!

  • @shobud7561
    @shobud7561 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to find a good mechanic to repair the engine. The head bolts you broke off wouldn't have happened if you hadn't used a air impact. Heat , breaker bar and socket. Its for sure you haven't a clue what your doing.

    • @The2006rubicon
      @The2006rubicon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No impact gun. The bolts were siezed into the deck of the block from a bad head gasket leaking by and rusting them in hard. Heating them up even after soaking them in kroil overnight didn't work, they snapped off using a hand ratchet anyway. Wound up using a Bridgeport with a centercutting end mill after locating the centers and cutting the bolt shanks to the deck surface and it came right off with no damage. I never said I was the world's best mechanic, but I'm not the worst either and I don't appreciate being trashed by someone who doesn't know the whole story.

    If you put the gas tank above the motor, could you run the gas line straight into the carburetor instead of going through the governor? Maybe then just take the governor off and cap the hole? Or is there a way to bore out the governor to add hp? Thanks, I'm building a sawmill and really want to use one of these motors.

    • @dangoldbach6570
      @dangoldbach6570 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shane K the governor is connected only to the throttle linkage, there is a tiny fuel pump that lets you put the gas tank wherever you want. If you dont run it through the pump you definitely have to have the gas tank higher than the carb inlet to gravity feed. In this case the governor linkage was just disconnected. Once you do that you can just leave it in place, its got a pressurized oil line going through it so it's easier to just leave it in place. I do a 4a032 walk through that you can see the linkage and pump. Hope this helps!

    • @dangoldbach6570

      gnbaird1123 its the coupling. You should be able to find the PMCS (preventative maintainaince/check/service) manual using the info on the data plate, it should say MEP-803 (numbers may be 813, 816, etc etc. or similar), use that to find the pmcs, that will give you step by step instructions on literally everything you want to disassemble

    avgas is good insurance for the carb. I never had to replace a carb when I was in the Army working on those. Alcohol will ruin the float in those. I have one liberated from uncle Sam. It is attached to a 3kW 28 volt generator. I have a 28 volt Inverter that happily runs on that power. All I need is a starter, forklift battery and an automatic control system to start the engine and close the breaker when the battery gets below 24 volts.
