Growing Sweet Pea, Autumn Sowing For Success
I have had a hard time with sweet pea over the last few years with them starting strong and transplanting terribly, getting killed off by cold snaps or just taking FOREVER to put on any height and giving disappointing crop yields while taking up a lot of room on the allotment. But not this year. i am changing up the garden position and getting them in the ground early. This year I will have masses of sweet smelling, gorgeous sweet pea.

Planting Out Spring Bulbs; Freesia, daffodil, bluebell, muscari, hyacinth, allium and mystery bulbs

Bulbs are going in the ground! The wather has cooled and some of the bulbs have started sprouting in the bags so it is definetly time to head to my cut flower allotment garden and get planting. Digging and transplanting Dahlia at Peak season - Moving to the new allotment

    I do not know if you can find the rhizomes in Japan but have you considered growing papaver orientale? They have gorgeous colours and frills and they are right into your colour pallet. Buying bulbs can go very easily overboard, but I think you are doing well. With the Netherlands right next to Germany, we can get pretty much every bulb very easily and veryyy cheaply. So I've ended up buying about 15 kilos of bulbs just for my balcony. I'm hoping for a ton of blooms this spring because the blooms yield from all the perennials I had last year was not impressive at all. I look forward to seeing your bulbs in your new garden develop.

      I am concerned they will be very small but the bulbs are bigger than my muscari bulbs and the picture is definitely more of the full hyacinth form of flower. In regards to Snaps, I'm in a similar climate in US and since they are cool flowers I'm starting the plants now to plant in fall for spring harvest. The ones I plant in spring do give some blooms before heat, but then get flimsy like yours. But if I keep them cut back in summer, the next spring (second year) I get a massive harvest. Best bet for you plant in fall for spring then tear out (I did this with a section of plants), then planted zinnia's there.

    Goodness that's aweful. Devastated too for the older ones like you said. Do you have any lawn at all around your house ? Or a grass verge that all the neighbours share near the rd etc? Sorry I don't know the culture or space for housing there.

      There is so little available land around here. There is so much farm looking land around but the rules about using it are very strict and make it impossible for farmers to (legally) lease it out. Most people in apartments have small balconies, usually used for drying washing but talking to some of the others at the allotment it seems that some are going to grow there instead but it will literally be a few pots, nothing comparable to the allotment. It is frustrating and sad.

    Maybe the spray stock you saw was the quartet type? The arrangement with the buttery yellow stock is so gorgeous! I like your interplanting ideas. I was also surprised by the height of some poppies! I planted breadseed poppies for the pods, but will not put them in the front of beds again haha. Prolific (late) spring plants for me: orlaya, bouquet dill, iceland poppies, larkspur, godetia, and snapflags. I'm going to definitely look into more daffodils since my ranunculus bloomed so early and were lonely.

      It was the quartet type and I have just found the seeds for it for next spring!!! I’m not allowed to grow bread seed poppies in Japan because they can be used to make opium so I am searching for other varieties that make the nice big pods. Snapflags🤣

    I find it fascinating that no matter how your flowers are (long, short, bright or pale) you still manage to create amazingly looking flower arrangements at your home. Well done!!!!

      Thank you so much. I took ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) lessons for a while which taught me that you only really need 3-4 flower stems to make an impactful arrangement. I am also slowly honing in what colours, shapes and textures I like in flowers so that I can grow a more coherent colour palette and flower selection so I should have the basis for a nice bouquet at all times of the year.

    Ok...I'm giving you an idea...Rue, have you ever tried Rue. It's an acid yellow/green flower (which I love) and also the seed heads are great. And the foliage is beautiful blue green. I've never cut them to try in vases but that's not my thing. I'm going to grow some tulip in pots for next Spring. Hopefully. Take care :)

      Yay suggestions, thank you. I googled it and it looks like a great filler and maybe something to replace my fennel which came up really early but also died pretty quickly when it started getting hot. It is a perennial, does it die right back in winter or take up space all year? It’s also self seeding, does yours spread much?

    • @heatherfoley4945
      @heatherfoley4945 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fromthewitchsgarden I don't think it will die back in your climate. I don't think mine dies completely back and we get way below freezing maybe it does. Gosh I can't recall. No mine doesn't spread much but it's not in a great location. I hope to start some from seed in early spring so I can establish a larger patch because it's one of my favorite plants to have growing in my garden. It's also a host plant for Giant Swallowtail butterflies here. Did you try bronze fennel?

    I was just about to say that 1 month old crysanth can be topped and make you some extras! 🤣👍🏼 then you said it yourself anyway! 🫣🤣 also even if you don’t keep the topping and root it - they would benefit from being topped because they become more bushy and will give more flowering stems! 🫶🏼 gotta love a Mum! 😁🫶🏼

      The summer heat has kicked in this week but luckily (for me) rainy season dragged on a couple of weeks longer than usual so the garden was actually pretty well watered.
