All of your tulips are going to be great. The really black, simple one, which should be Queen of Night is a classic!! The last two types you showed us (if I recognize them correctly) should be Carnaval de Nice and parrot tulip Estella Rijnveld. They are actually both historic tulips, developed at the beginning of the 20th century and Carnaval de Nice also has RHS awards. I also have these two and Queen of Night to grow in pots in my German balcony and garden in Crete. Between Germany and Greece, all the friends I want to give some bulbs to, and the very affordable prices here in Europe, I've bought soooo many bulbs 😅😅😅😅 but I'm sure we'll both enjoy them immensely 😍😍😍
I’m so jealous of your cheaper bulbs 😫 it’s great to hear of someone with similar taste in flowers and colours, your balcony is going to look super dramatic. I think Tokyo lies at the same latitude as Greece, I wonder if our flowers will bloom at a similar time?
You are correct that the red and white tulip are Carnival de Nice and parrot Estella Rijnveld but the black is not Queen of Night it is Continental which often looks more purple in pictures so I am hoping they come through as black as the label suggests.
I tried a mix including some striped ones and the mix came up v well. They are just for my satisfaction ! What survives and what dos not is purely a random event!
So many of my favourite from previous seasons have been things I would never have originally chosen but came from a mix or were all I could find, it’s one of the reasons I like to switch a few things up every season and keep trying new varieties and colours. I’m definitely looking forward to spring to see what will pop up.
Me too! I have some plain red tulip and some red ranunculus that I’m hoping will look good with the blood splatter tulips. I have to think of a better name for them than that 😂
Today is bloody freezing 🥶 but the weekend was still in the 20s (Celsius). I’m thinking it might be time to put the low tunnels up before the night time temps get too cold and kill off all my freesia like last year.
