Testing Watercolors In The Hobonichi Cousin 2025 & How I Pick Colors
Let's test how the Tomoe River Paper in my Hobonichi Cousin holds up to watercolors. I'll also briefly touch on my experience with waterbased markers and colored pencils. I also chat about how I tend to pick the colors for my journal spreads.

Decorating Traveler's Notebook Insert Covers | Collage With Me
Thank you for sharing this cheerful video! It was really relaxing to watch you bring your pages to life with your watercolours. I haven’t tried watercolour in my hobonichi cousin, yet. After seeing this, I would like to try. If not in my cousin, since that’s mainly for work, then maybe my A6! Thank you for the inspiration!
I love the idea of using an envelope for a pocket! Definitely will try it!
It could be so fun to play around with different colored envelopes or envelopes made with patterned paper ☺️
Oh I just love your little big eyed doll at the beginning! Is she a PopMart?
She's darling, isn't she. Yes, she's a PopMart. I think the series is called Nyota's Fluffy Life. They just came out with a new series with that same character called "Growing Up Your Way" and it looks absolutely charming.
@ thank you! 😍
Not a paint-related comment, but I used to be able to easily reposition stickers and washi in my Hobonichi planners, but the new paper does NOT want to let them go. ☹️
Ah yes, I have noticed that too. Such a bummer!
Love how watercolours make the paper crinkle.
It's a very satisfying sound for sure ☺️
I was just thinking about this the other day, but was nervous to try for the reasons you listed! Thanks for trying it!
The paper this year is so unpredictable! I wouldn't be surprised if other people have less luck with watercolor in their books. I was going to switch to more markers to avoid fluffing up my book too much, but they definitely bleed quite quickly 🫣
Watercolors have worked perfectly for me. All my markers bleed except Faber Castell. 😭
Yeah I’m a bit surprised that watercolor seems more reliable than markers. I was actually gonna get more markers, but now I’m glad I didn’t 😬
The paper in Sterling Ink planners is different this year too. But I’ll be applying your philosophy of making it work. 😊
With having switched journals so much last year, I’m determined to stay in it, despite it not being perfect. I might do something different next year though.
Wah 🤩 live action name twin! What a treat! I’ve done a little watercolor in my cousin and really like the way the pages get all crinkly. As always I love your art style and color pallet. You make me want to draw! I don’t do that enough. 🩵
You’re so sweet ☺️ the crinkles are so pleasant, aren’t they. I keep telling myself to not use watercolor on every page, but I can’t help myself 😬 really feeling the drawings and the colors right now. I hope you’ll get to draw ☺️
Very much enjoyed hearing your thought process on colors and choosing them. I have been using the Hobonichi since 2021, but have only gotten in to fountain pens toward the end of last year, so can’t speak to that difference. So far, I have had great success with all my mediums on the new paper. I use watercolors (I can’t draw, so just use washes of color for backgrounds occasionally). Also use the Distress Oxide inks and do some amount of stamping with Versafine Onyx Black. All of these seem to actually be performing better on this paper than last year. However, I did notice my Fudenosuke brush pen is ghosting more heavily and even has slight bleed through compared to last year. I love the planner so much, I will work around these slight issues and just try to find creative solutions 😅 I too would love to see a video of your thoughts on fountain pens and inks!
I have used the a5 cousin avec for 5 years. I'm so disappointed 😢 watercolor used to be my favorite in my hobonichi. It soaks right in ans so much bleeding through with markers and pens 🖊 I used to use with zero issues. I guess unfortunately this will be my last year using it, unless they fix the problem😢😢😢😢
Oh cool, face-to-face chat with Maike! Love the Blythe and kitty in the background 😊 My friend makes onionskin paper journals and I love them even more than the Tomoe River paper - and yes they take watercolour well and have a great crinkle! They’re almost too nice to use so I don’t use them too often, but your videos have inspired me to try and get comfortable with them, thank you ❤
I enjoyed seeing you use watercolors in the hobonichi. It is one of my preferred journaling options for decor. Your artwork turned out so lovely and pretty.
Glad you enjoyed the video ☺️ And thank you for your kind words! That's lovely that you use watercolor too! Do you tend to paint things from your day? Or do you paint decorative elements like flowers?
So far just been able to paint a couple of simple flowers and backgrounds. I need a lot more practice. :)
Hello Maike Thanks for the video. What is that doll figure on the left side - first part of video -? Too cute.
You're welcome ☺️ That is a Blythe doll. Well mine is unfortunately a knock-off Blythe doll, but I love her just the same ☺️
@ honestly , I like her more than the original 😅 (I do know Blythe dolls and have few of them), I didn’t see one that small and with kind of slightly different eyes. Where from?
@ oh how fun that you have a few of them! I got her from Alieexpress 🫣 I cut her hair and gave her different eye chips and eyelashes. I bought her a neck joint, but haven’t installed it yet. I think she’s regular size though.
@@MaikeOatley I just placed an order for Nyota's Fluffy Life Series Figures from Popmart … the girl with the kitty is in that series. Kinda excited 😁 thanks for sharing.
@@imaie3617 oh yay how exciting! They just came out with another series with this character and I’m veery tempted 😬🫣
I haven’t yet stepped into the world of Hobonichi…. I started researching them last year and it felt a bit overwhelming as there are so many choices! I guess I was worried that I might make the wrong decision and end up regretting it. I really enjoyed your thoughts about the paper and how it behaves, plus it was so relaxing to watch you paint. I love the pink ink colour on your January 4 entry. I would love to watch a video about your fountain pen and ink collection if you ever felt inclined to show them one day ❤️
Hi Niki, yes Hobonichi can be overwhelming to get into. They are quite pricey notebooks, so it feels extra painful if one choose a book that turns out not to be a great fit. I started with their grid notebooks for that reason, just to get a feel for the paper. Although since this year even that got more complicated, unfortunately. And I'd be happy to film more about my fountain pens and inks! I've recently really gotten back into them. That pink is Robert Oster's Australis Rose, btw ☺️
@@MaikeOatleythanks so much for your kind reply, Maike and for telling me the name of the fountain pen ink 💕 I really appreciate your Hobonichi videos because they have given me so much guidance! I like your idea about trying a notebook first, that sounds like a good first step 😊 Hopefully they will take the feedback about the paper quality onboard for the future, fingers crossed! I’m so excited to see your pen and ink collection! 🥰
@@MaikeOatley ps. It was so lovely to see you in person on camera ❤️
loved this! super inspired by your process and thoughts around color and memory, and i loved that pullman quote you shared!
So happy to hear you enjoyed the video! I felt quite self-conscious and awkward after filming this, so it's nice to hear that it resonated ☺️
I have never used watercolors in Hobonichi… but I enjoy seeing it and have always seen mylifemits Hobonichi with watercolors. I’ve been using the weeks and it seems like inconsistent paper … sort of unpredictable which is weird! I also have the a6 but as an ink journal I only use one side of the page anyway due to swatching - I tend to swatch too heavily and wet 😅
Yes mylifemits is so inspiring with her doodles! I haven't tried watercolor yet in this year's weeks. My weeks is definitely making my line widths wider, but at least the ink colors show up nicely. My Hobonichi paper has skewed some of my colors. It's all so weird and random.
@@MaikeOatley Yes, the ink sort of spreads more in my weeks, if I put it side by side can definitely see. It's all just very weird, but I'm committed and don't want to buy another planner, so will have to work with it! Boo hoo!
I enjoyed your thoughts about journaling and the different types of journaling and how they are all valuable. I also thought your words about women's hobbies were very powerful and rang true to me. We all enjoy the journaling hobby for our own reasons and have different ways we approach the hobby, and I am compelled to watch what other people do for journaling because I enjoy other perspectives and ideas. Isn't that the point of TH-cam? Of community? Shouldn't we appreciate and support each other's differences and find joy in someone else's joy? Isn't the whole point of journaling that we are expressing ourselves creatively in the way that feels best for us? I'm so glad we are all different, and there are so many different types of expression. Thank you for your thoughts and your creativity. 💖
I'm so glad to hear that this video resonated with you! And I totally agree with you - I too think that the point of TH-cam and of the community here is to get to share in the same hobby and get inspired by others who may have a different approach to journaling. And even if someone's approach is not for me, it still makes me reflect on what I like and what works for me. That doesn't mean I have to talk down to them. Watching someone's video is such a small glimpse into someone's life. I would never think to know enough about them to pass judgement (not that I want to pass judgement to begin with). Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment!
I use EK tools cutter bee scissors (the white and grey colour). I also like credit card blanks for washi tape wrapping. Thank you very much for your sample sheet of cats from Cat Collage Club page!
You're so welcome, I hope the cats bring you lots of joy! I made a note of the cutter bee scissors. For now I went with the Tonic Tim Holtz scissors, but it's nice to know of an alternative.
This is my first time coming across your channel and I am OBSESSED with your color palettes and ink variations! The small life moments are so beautiful. I feel like you would love the book "Gilead" by Marilynne Robinson
Aw, thank you! That's so lovely to hear. That book sounds intriguing and put it on my tbr list. Thank you for the suggestion ☺️
I love the cat stickers. I see them everywhere.
Thank you, so glad you like the cats ☺️
I absolutely LOVE your swatching cover, and the swatching you did inside your notebook. I love the color palettes you use. Wonderful and so pleasing. ❣
Aw, thank you! That's encouraging to hear ☺️ color mixing and swatching is such a calming thing to do. Thank you for watching ☺️
I love this! I’m slowly but surely becoming a Midori girly (I’m a bit over the paper roulette honestly 😅) At first I wasn’t too drawn to them cause I like fun covers and colors. But then I realized that actually Midori is PERFECT for people who want to customize their covers since it’s almost a raw text-block. I’m looking forward to experiment with fabric next.
Yes, Midori is so reliable and consistent! And I agree that there are so many ways to personalize Midori books, it's quite fun ☺️
Thank you Maike! I have been looking forward to this video as I find all your videos so relaxing and cosy! You made this so clear and easy to follow, I feel like I have the confidence to try it out myself now. Also, great idea about using the little off-cuts as page tabs, very cute! 💕
This makes me so happy to hear! Glad you feel confident to give it a go!
The Tiger Balm! I'll forever see it this way now. Thank you!
Haha, you're welcome ;)
I remember doing this for composition notebooks as a kid. I never would’ve thought to put it on a planner/journal like a Hobonichi. Genius. TFS ❤
Glad to share ☺️ I always enjoy when positive things from childhood come back around to bring us joy in adulthood.
Hi! I just discovered this YT channel!! May I ask what sticker paper you are using for the stickers that you have printed?? It looks like washi paper?? Thanks!!
Hi! That is the Clear Matte sticker paper from onlinelabels.com ☺️
@@MaikeOatley Thank you!!
I like how you just glued the first page down! It gives a really clean and built-in look. I’ve always just cut out a new piece of paper to glue there, and leave a little fabric showing around the edges. Since the pages line up with the cover on Hobonichis that looks much better! Also I’m obsessed with the fabric you used on the second/last one!
Yes I like how easy that method is to make it look quite neat, though I do like the little frame on that first page of Midori books. Maybe sometime this year I'll play with adding another piece of fabric. Might be fun to combine patterns.
Maike! I've wondered for years how to add fabric to my notebooks. The Liberty fabrics weeks have been a staple in my yearly stack, so this is a PERFECT tutorial for how to extend that magic to other notebooks. Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks! BTW, the fabric you chose for your cousin this year is just a DREAM!!! 💖
I'm so glad that this tutorial is helpful to you ☺️ I lover Liberty fabrics and I must admit, I've been doing some research to find places to buy some for future notebooks ☺️
Thank you! I've been excited for this video! I think I'll cover a little A6 notebook that I'm taking to the Philly pen show next weekend!
Oh yay, how fun! I hope you have a wonderful time at the pen show! ☺️
I love the way this looks! I'd suggest a simple bone folder or something with a flat edge to smooth out the fabric onto the glue and simply stacking some hefty books onto the finished book to flatten the warping back out. I'd like to try this soon!
Thank you for your kind comment! Those are great tips! I do have a bone folder, but it's one of those things I forget it exists every now and then 🫣
Oh, this is good! I tried this once and the spine looked bad. Now I know the trick!
Glad to be of help ☺️
Really useful video, thanks!
Glad you find it useful ☺️ Thanks for watching!
What an amazing video! Thank you for sharing your process with us. Your journals look lovely ❤❤❤🎉
Glad you like the video ☺️ Thank you for taking the time to leave a lovely comment!
Such lovely fabric patterns! Thanks for showing the process. I think it can be nice to upcycle maybe even a favorite piece of clothing that can’t be worn anymore. I think customizing our books makes them even more special. ❤
Yes, that's such a lovely idea to upcycle favorite pieces of clothing! That might also be cute for a baby book.
Thank you. It helps to have seen it done before doing it my self.
I'm glad this video is helpful. I figured it might be nice to see it done in real-time, even if it's not the most riveting TH-cam content.
Lovely entries! I think it's nice how you have a mix of writing and drawing... very cool. I seem to be in writing mode or doodle mode and not mixing them. Need to experiment a bit more! Thanks for sharing and how cute are the tigers massaging your arm - LOL! I wish that is actually what happens when you use tiger balm - haha!
Thank you for your lovely comment, Linda. I used to only draw, but i've learned over time that I need more context to fully remember. So I consciously "trained" myself to combine writing and drawing, though I can definitely relate to the "modes'. I also find that it sometimes depends on what I am thinking about or what the experience was.
Ooh, a quick question: If I was to use washi tape around the edges to create a frame around a painting, and then peel away, do you think it would peel cleanly from the page?
I would say yes, I think it would peel of neatly, though I haven't tried it yet. I'll do a test.
This was really helpful, thank you. I hope to make my journalling more of a multimedia process so want to avoid as much bleed/show through as possible, without straying from my beloved MD paper, so the Thick probably the answer.
Glad this was helpful! Sounds like this notebook might be a good fit for you ☺️
This is my new comfort channel ❤❤❤
Awww 💖💖💖 That makes my heart so very happy! Thanks for sharing this ☺️
The first few ideas got me inspired.
Yay ☺️ Glad to hear that!
Hi you mentioned in another video that you printed out the summary of this video and put it in the front pocket of your journal. I would like to copy this idea! Would you be willing to share the pdf you printed out? Love this video!!
Hi ☺️ So glad you found this video helpful! The printable summary was part of the December Cat Collage Club collection, which is still available when you sign up. I haven't decided yet if I'll make it available elsewhere. Let me know if I can help with anything else ☺️
@@MaikeOatleythank you!
Lovely. I subscribed to your printables starting last month. Could you pls share where the washi tape on the 2nd of Jan page are from?
Thank you so much for joining Cat Collage Club! I hope you are enjoying the cats ☺️ I'd love to help you out with the washi tape. Could it be that you're referring to a different date? I don't think I show any January pages.
I ADORE the idea of capturing that moment of the young man with the Barbie 10:55. I have those moments sometimes too.
Yeah I am so glad i remembered that moment (this is one of the benefits of journaling on the same day). I sometimes think:"If I got to read a past relative's journal, wouldn't it be interesting to know about the world? What people did they interact with or what did they observe?". Maybe it's weird to journal with a reader in mind, but I find it effective in finding cute little moments like that one ☺️
@@MaikeOatley ahhh I love it! Great perspective 🩷
Hi Maike! I love the doodle with the little tigers. First, I didn't realize the tiger balm - and so I thought that the pain hurt more than just Muskelkater, and it was more like Muskeltiger 😂
Haha that's funny! I think I am always gonna think of that now when I have a particular bad Muskelkater 😂
These stickers in the book are amazing, where can we find them please?
All the lovely flowers, butterflies and such are from Erin Ware. I'm part of her Patreon, which is linked in the description ☺️ Hope this helps.
