Mike/Dustin, my favorite of the Lag 12 releases is the 2014 but very closely followed by the 2015 (2013 is my honorable mention that's also close but just behind). FYI, if you want to taste what an oily thick and aged version of this Lag 12 2015 would be like, then go no further than the Port Ellen 1983 32yr 15th release. The Lag 2015 and PE 15th are a nephew and an uncle IMO. What are the odds---different eras and distilleries? The PE 15th has most of its ABV in oiliness---not burn (the Lag 2015 is more burn as a youthful and inexperienced and raw product). As such, with no burn, you can leave it on the palate for a long time, chewing it and swirling it to harvest every bit of flavor without having to fight the burn (I love this no-burn oiliness feature in a whisky, and most often can find it in the best 40-46 abv Old School whiskies). I score the PE 15th at 93-94 pts. The Lag 12 2015 would be the poor man's PE 15th release---and I have it at 91 pts score. So, those who love the profile of Lag 12 2015 can know that if they wanna splurge, they can do it reliably by putting that money into the PE 15th release . . . . . . . FYI
Fire Kevin - love it :-). Nice take -- seems like something to throw in a cocktail... for someone you don't like. They have put out a few good ones in this series, but I've noticed reviews are pretty mixed based on different batches. It feels like they are basically putting these parcels together and bottling, whether they're good or not. I just had a real dissapointment from one of your favorites: a single cask, Vinho Peated Kavalan -- I'm down at something like a 72 for it.
Vinho Peated sounds like to would work... normally love Kavalan. sometimes Kev has to go
I haven't tried this bottle but I do like heavy sherried Caol Ilas. The Adelphi bottlings from a few years ago were insane. I have had the SV 100 proof Blair Athol and just bought their 13yr Benrinnes 100 proof. Guys the price point is where this hits for a lot of people. They are trying to offer good value for single malts. Sure there will be some misses but I bet most of these releases are pretty good for the money. On a side note, Single Cask Nation has a 14yr single cask Caol Ila up on their site right now at a good price. 55.5% and was finished for 3.5yr in FF Spanish oloroso. Cheers!
I'm all for good value and we will try more... this was an Arc of a whisky
Cool. I just ordered this particular Signatory Caol ila yesterday and here you are with a rewiev. Marvelous. Slainte
🤣🤣🤣 sorry
First off, I really love your channel - its really nice that you two dont just crack open a bottle take a sip and then rate it, so cheers. (plus the whisky selection, while mostly outside of my budget, is very interesting) The 100 proof series is very hit or miss for me personally: the first bottlings seemed too similar to catch me, mostly 1 dimensional sherry bombs, that lack depth but recent releases have been quite nice, e.g. the secret speyside (M -acallan) for 45€ was really good. I ordered a 11 year old mortlach, a vatting of 1st and 2nd fill and am interested to see how that will taste. Lastly, did one of you two have a chance to try the port charlotte syc:01? im looking to buy a special bottle for my graduation and as a peat fan that loves wine casks it should be right up my alley - alternatively do you have any other recommendations?
I think we've reviewed what we've had on that line. We need to finish the series though! I've loved every bottle. Wine casks and peat at that price point...not gonna lie, it's hard to beat the PC series. If that's your profile and budget is that limited, I don't think you can top any of those. The OLC is where I'd send you, but I don't think you have to worry about anything in that series. Honestly I think you'd have to spend a lot more to get something as good. But yeah Mike says he started the channel to give the world an American perspective because back when this started there weren't many. Today, we've pivoted up market with the top shelf branding, but the core idea is what two american's think about whisky, and we happen to drink a LOT of great whisky. So for branding gotta do a lot of high end stuff, but it wouldn't be useful to not try stuff like this from time to time either. Eventually we gotta do the Johnny walker stuff, "whisky snobs drink red label"
🧐Good God. What a pair of old women. (Apologies in advance to all actual old women who put this pair to shame.) 😆 Call yourselves whisky drinkers. I've never seen the like. Getting plenty of wood? That's something right? Thick wood and beavers no less. It's booze - Drink to the honour of Bacchus and enjoy. Seriously chaps, the world of whisky is an endlessly interesting universe. Wouldn't it be boring if we just liked the same old thing? I have great whisky and I have stuff like this and I like it. (I actually bought a bottle.) This bottle is decent stuff for the money. We spread our bets and when I buy cheap I lower my expectations but I factor in the value. Even if it's cheap I want to find it interesting and that supports my bank balance too.
I don't mind well priced descend whisky but this was all wood for me... had a chance to try the new Ardbeg 17?
@ Just too expensive for 17 year old whisky Mike. I'll never buy it because they're just ripping us off and taking us for fools. Naturally, I would buy it if it was priced reasonably because it's an interesting offer but I'm over the chase of celebrity bottles. I really am. WT
I was expecting youthful notes and some off profile spirit. I didn't expect these just weird casks Welsh. I'm not gonna lie...I wouldn't take a backup of this for free. I'll maybe mix it with coke. At the end of the day, this isn't good. It's not horrible but I don't have the money to buy whisky I don't enjoy. If I want to just get drunk, i'll buy cheap bourbon.
@@welshtoro3256 question was if you'd tried it. Sometimes you get a nice bar pour :)
If you always treat alcohol as a poison, which it is, then it’s not worth “just enjoying” whisky you don’t like. It’s not worth “finding something interesting” if it means poisoning yourself with cheap shit.
I’ve got a Signatory Cask Strength Caol Ila 15 year first fill sherry and it smells exactly like Lays BBQ potato chips….in a good way.
oh that sounds fun!
The 100 proof series is all first fill sherry casks. Mainly Oloroso. I have the Highland Park 14 and it's pretty good. Other reviews suggest this Caol Ila is not 😂
yeah, I want to try a few more. I ahd someone get an exceptional glenlivet from this series and he couldn't have been less impressed sadly.
Thanks for tasting this so we don't have to; taking one for the team on this one! Too bad, I love oak and peppery Caol Ila.
Haven't tried this one, but I don't think they priced it that low because it was bad, they put out the whole series at a similar price point and the 13YO Macallan and 13YO Benrinnes are decent.
Well, the thing is, you create a cheap line because you have casks to get rid of and don't want to ruin your premium brands. Nothing wrong with it. And I'm sure some will be better than others. But they'd charge 100 for this if it were better. And lets be real...most macallan is pretty bad :) My hope was this was more "boring" vs "off putting". I hope others are more on the boring side.
This is a whisky to have once in a while so you appreciate good whisky that much more😅😅😅
That's true!
"As it opens up, I'm getting even more oak!" Not for me.
If you like chew on wood, this is your whisky. The official single malt of beavers everywhere.
Baby's puke ! . . . I'm getting a case. Sounds great for base to vat/blend.
More peat, lemon n hay imo on this batch vs last batch. Last batch sugar cookies was the star this batch its a compliment.
So you got past the wood... impressive.
I love this whisky at cask strength. Salty.
Nothing Like a good Springbank 12cs👌 Great Review Guys🫡
Heathens! I'm only jking
Pass just on cost alone. My cap is 100 now so I’ll stick with shelfers. Till they get crazy. Then I’ll go bourbon only.
any irish?
@8:45 FYI, from a very reliable and high level contact at my local large chain retailer, the "lost" shipment was specifically a result of the container getting dropped at the port, destroying the contents within.
So not a truck or a ship but a crane?
@topshelfdustin3060 Didn't get that specific, so I can't comment on exactly how and why the container was dropped. It's too bad it wasn't a container of mattresses instead of our precious Cambeltown spirits!

Glad to hear this review. I was able to get one bottle of this batch - still unopened . I love batch 25 - so much that I got 3 of them! At this point in my whisky journey, Springbank 12s are one of the few releases that I continue to collect. Always great to hear your reviews.
Ivs said this a few times recently. The 12 year cast strength is one of the best buys in Scotch whisky these days. Solid as a rock.
I have been buying less in terms of dollars (don't listen to mike). And even a bit less in total bottles, my collection is shrinking. I say this to qualify...I will not be stopping my 12 CS buying, and I might even be willing to keep it up at another 50 a bottle.
@@topshelfdustin3060 I confess I got 2 Longrow 21s and a Springbank 21 in the past few months - sort of a mix of Christmas and Bday presents for myself!
@@garyk3675 if you got them at auction (the longrows) you likely got a steal! So good work! I mean to be fair I bought a springbank 21 recently too....and it was a sample review one we didn't even love. But the price was....not even great but it was good lol. I'm a springbank ho :)
@@topshelfdustin3060 the Springbank 21 was too expensive - but i figured i deserved it - the Longrows were much more reasonable - i got both of them (2022 and 2023 releases) for the price of the Springbank (2024 release)
Thanks again guys. I might need to use the “sugar cookies” and ‘gummy worms’ description too! I got my bottle of the 26 at the distillery, phew!
15 is a horrible batch. 16 is so much better.
I’ll have to try the 16. I’ve had about 10 of these and I didn’t think the batch 15 was the worst. Maybe 12?
Magic Cask is the CB that Dustin is referring to. Just thought I would add the note for future viewers. Its very old Imperial, with a dash of the Magic Cask.
Today at auction I picked up a bottle of the 2009 release of this T30 C.S. for 1,050usd all costs included. 2009 is the one I haven't tried--but heard good things about it. Once I get the new 2009 bottle aired out, I'll do a head2head comparison with my other Talisker C.S. bottles. I'll let you know what I think of the 2009 versus the others . . . . .
awesome! good buy. I love cask strength 25 and 30 year.
Great Job again!!!
Thanks, appreciate it!
Watching this in Jan 2025. This bottle is 1,200-2000!!
I could have had 3 for 169 per... one of my worst whisky mistakes.
@ I got a bottle from auction for about 1000, and I just cannot bring myself to open it yet.
Great review guys! The menthol notes are very present on this one. I finally opened mine. But I can’t pinpoint which one of the components is know for it. I sometimes get that menthol notes on very old whisky as well. There are some very old components here, so it might be that as well. Over all, I agree a good dram, but I was expecting a lot more for the price.
Any plans to review any more of this artist series? The Benromachs released in this series definitely caught my eye.
@@MaltSavour no plans, but we certainly will not shy away from them in the future
Worth a trip to Paris to visit LMDW. I was there 2 years ago, I mentioned to the guy that I couldn’t believe they had Blanton’s SFTB just sitting out at €125. He went to a cabinet, pulled out five of them and asked me to please buy them all.
@@llamabones I was always told the French head great taste when it came to liquors and desserts… for me, this just verifies it. Blantons SFTB i’ve always been disappointments for me.
True, I was just impressed by the Tater Salad. I left with a LMDW Benromach pick. Hey, OHLQ, ever heard of Benromach?
I just picked up an LMDW Ardmore 11 year and will uncork soon. I love the Ardmore character. These LMDW bottlings are not cheap!
Their new 18 is legit. Fantastic starter pour.

Oloroso Sherry hogshead. Great review as always - does what it says on the tin! Cheers fellas.
I enjoy almost every release of A’Bunadh…but some of the batches in the the 70 range, specifically the 76, runs a bit hot and not as “cinnamony” as other batches. Appreciate your reviews!
A’bunadh was always a solid dram. Cask strength sherry never unwelcome.
Favorite Aberlour?
Abunadh batch 68. Was so good.
@@xsilvesnowx68! Nice I still have a 48 or 49…. Now I need to look.
Those old cube bottles from the 70's. 8 year old, 50% abv. Dark or clear vatting, both are good. I also loved a 18 year old vintage 2002 bottled at a whopping 62.6% for La Maison du Whisky again.
I had a bottle of this because I wanted to try Ardnamurchan and sherry. I'd give it an 86 but it's not something I have on my radar. I've tried a few Ardnamurchan expressions and the most recent was the Midgie. They are a good distillery and I like the way they're going about their business but the early hype that surrounded them was ridiculous. Sound's like a certain Campbelltown distillery I could mention. Talking of which, that distillery's core range is always 46%. That's fine for go to whisky but I would urge all distilleries of serious whisky to bottle anything that's 18 years old, or a special release, to offer us 50% abv for a level of wow factor. Well done to Bruichladdich for making it the norm. Hunter Laing offer it too - The Golden Strength and my favourite.
@@welshtoro3256 I suppose we’re all looking for that next great distillery. A buddy of mine, will ask, what’s the next “bitcoin” of whisky? And I always tell him, you’re assuming there has to be one . There will never be another Michael Jordan. Dustin and I called 46% ABV the minimum for a good abv but we’ve also said it’s hard to be disappointed with something that’s 48%. I like your idea of 50% better.
This batch gets a lot better with tons of air. I was NOT impressed either, but that was in the top half of the juice in 6 months of working it down to 1/2 fill. Then I let it sit untouched for a year at 1/2 fill. Then this aired out lower half of the bottle was 2-3 points better. So the 17-8-01 batch has this caveat. My guess is that fiddling around and waiting a year of heavily aired out juice is not what most want to do with a 10 yr old release. So most should avoid this batch IMO unless they want to play the time and air game. The March 2021 batch is a lot better without the airing game.
Yeah springbank 10 should be an approachable daily type whisky. Waiting 6 months is something we do with legendary bottles. High end offerings and so on. This should be a pop it and enjoy.
@@jonadad well that was also a time when distilleries were just trying to stay open and were adding 20-30 year juice to their 10's to entice people to buy at any price. Vs today where distilleries can't sell enough. Just different times.Point being, those were ultra premium whiskies often, just sold as daily sippers because they didn't have any other way to get cash in the door.
Hey guys, theres a 2024 release of 18 years which is available to me. Ive never reallt had a macallan put in a huge lover of bunnahabhain and a good sherried whisky. Wondering if this is worth the money for taking a shot in the dark. Cheers!
if the price is right you'll likely get a nice sherry bomb. Just don't think you're getting a true macallan profile. The wood used in these isn't that of what Macallan uses. And depending on who you ask that could be a good or bad thing. But it's a different profile. If you want to try a macallan 18, just get a bar pour and be glad you didn't waste money on the full bottle at today's insane pricing.

Best price/performance red breast by far. Among very best value in all whisk(e)y
I can’t argue with that.
Prices for Irish are absolutely ridiculous anymore, bought the redbreast 27 like 3 years ago for 460 now it’s like 1100.
I saw the barry crocket for like 500 recently...I couldn't even think of words. Just stupid.
Irish Distillers and Diageo are the worst offenders for showing pure contempt for their customers through excessive overcharging. Oh, and your banter from 7:15 on is hilarious. Definitely seemed like the tail end of a cask strength evening. 😂
They are starting to lower prices to match the EU pricing. Americans have hit the ceiling for what we’re willing to pay.
I've either got good or GREAT news for you. We had a lot more reviews that day lol.
Not seen this one in sweden / Europe yet. Tried the new 18?
The 18 is pretty mediocre. I’d recommend trying it before buying a bottle. It’s not bad it’s just nothing impressive
@@4LeafWhiskey that's good info. At the US price it's a hard pass. At the UK prices...I'd thought about it as I love the 21.
Great review! I don't know if your bottle is the first batch 2021 version (L21); it was the best one. Luckily, here in NYC, I can get them for $85. In terms of drinkability and price, it's currently the best value Irish Whiskey!
At 85 all day. I'd guess this is the first round since I know new bottles are being priced around 150 here.
Absolutely love the PX. I still have a few bottles from the first limited release. Glad it is now a core product. It is $89 no tax where I get it in Massachusetts but regularly saw it at 199 and even higher around the country as well as Boston not long ago. They reduced price for US market to align it closer to Europe. They probably took a hit after the stupid price increase. Blue Spot went from $89 to $299 and Redbreast 27 425 to 1,200. I definitely like my Redbreast 21s over my Redbreast 27 batch 4 (just grapefruit at start).
Here in the Chicago market, the prices of Blue and Red Spot dropped significantly as they have just been collecting dust on shelves. Blue is now 150 and Red is 200. Still too much.
@@PatrickS0057 I passed on red at 160 when it came out. These prices are silly.
@topshelfdustin3060 I've had Red Spot and it's no better or worse than Yellow Spot, which is 119 in our market. It's so so overpriced, regardless of the extra 3 year maturation, which you can't detect.
@pizzawarlord9232 I walked away from the 27 year at 400 to 500, then 6 months ago had massive sticker shock to see at Total Wine at over 1,000. WTF?!
@@djbeacon6895 yeah it is crazy. They opened up to the Asia market (China) already with limited supply and jacked the price up in the American market. Blue Spot was $89 first time and $99 the second time 4 Red Spots for $115 each plus I got several not sold in the US offerings like Powers John Lane cask strength. Went in a DC store a month ago while on a business trip and saw cases of Gold Spot 9 year but #&*%@ wanted over $300 each. They currently sell at auction for $120 since the Gold Spot 13 came out.
