To say farm machinery is in my blood is certainly not an understatement! From a very early age when I was sat on a bale of hay, feeding the following cattle from the transport box attached to my late uncles MF 35X on his Cumbrian fell farm in the late 1960s right up until the present day, I’ve always had a fascination with tractors and all types of machinery. Having taken tens of thousands of photos over the years, I was asked in late 2006 if I would contribute to the pages of ‘Classic Tractor’ magazine covering the North West and Southern Scotland regions and 15 years later I still throughly enjoy getting an article into print. I decided on my many photo shoots that I should also video the action in the fields and so I set up this TH-cam channel. I’m so grateful for those of you who watch, like, subscribe and comment on my videos and also my gratitude goes to the owners who let me film their fabulous machinery.
Cumbrian Farming 2025. Classic Case-IH 1056XL & Bunning spreads the ripe stuff on the white stuff!
My first venture of 2025 into the fields of Cumbria and although a cold outing having hit -7 degrees over night it meant it was also the perfect day and conditions to clear the midden out and get some solid manure down on the frozen ground!
Also perfect was the outfit putting the muck down on the fields, which on this occasion is a 34-year-old Case-International 1056XL Turbo hitched up to a Bunning Lowlander 60 Farmstar rear discharge spreader.
With it’s long wheelbase, low centre of gravity and plenty of good old-fashioned power on tap with a glorious throaty bark from its straight-six engine especially pulling up the hill (note the r/h side door window open to listen to the roar), the Case-IH easily managed to handle the Bunning spreader on the steep land.
Emptying the indoor midden and loading the Bunning spreader was a mid-90s Matbro TS290, a handy and very manoeuvrable machine able to operate around the confines of the stock yard.
Surprisingly while filming in the field and despite the freezing temperatures it didn’t feel that cold and I also managed to stay on my feet on the slippery surface. What surprised me even more was I avoided getting covered in the smelly stuff due no doubt to the lack of wind (very rare in the fells indeed!) and also mainly thanks to the operator for throttling back a bit while I was filming but seeing as we’ve been friends for many years he probably didn’t want to spoil our friendship and have me travelling home a clarty mess and smelling of cow manure!
Filmed in Cumbria 11th January 2025.

Nice winter scene - and the farm work goes on . . .
@@balmesh It certainly does Alan. No days off for those in agriculture!
Good evening David. Now that is a grand video and as they say, it's Hot off the Press, filmed edited and uploaded in a handful of days is impressive.(Especially as you work long shifts). I have had a bit of a cold and was thinking about going for the Vic tonight, but after seeing the video I am sure there is no need, as I swear I could smell that manure from here 😂. Was a great combination of equipment with the young kid on the block being the Bunning spreader. Never operated one, but only ever hear good things about them. As you highlighted, the sound of the Case-International 1056XL turbo was like music and looked great too and liked that he had the Air Con on as he went up the hill. 😂. The condition of both the 1056 and the Matbro TS290 is superb and for their ages, still more than capable of doing a good days work, and makes me wonder how well modern equipment will fair when they become 30-40 years old! Was also impressed how sure footed the IH 1056 was on the hills with the frost, as I do have some interesting memories from years ago, as to wither I was spreading manure or ice skating with some of the hilly ground we farmed. Great footage as always David, and really loved that end shot looking down the hill/road to the steading which looked fantastic especially with the white hills in the background. Hope your well and thanks. Cheers, Fraser.
@@frasermathers2287 And a very good evening to you Fraser and yes I’m well, over the flu and fighting fit again! Now don’t let that cold take hold, I don’t know about Vic (can’t remember the last time I had a whiff of that) but I lost my sense of smell with the flu but could certainly smell the manure that day (it sure was ripe! 🤣) Yes it came together pretty quickly this one, apart from a bit of tweaking I kind of edited it the way it just fell together on the day so fairly simple to reach the end result! Yes a nice mix of equipment, 30-year-old tractor and nearly new spreader but a good well-matched combination and yes the Bunning machines are very well liked in the Cumbrian area. Oh that engine note from the Case-IH 1056XL turbo is definitely music to an enthusiasts ear, a lovely snarl to the engine especially when changing gear up the hills and topped off by that turbo whistle, beautiful! Even when idling reversing into the yard it sounds powerful, a proper old-school straight-6! I agree both the Case and the Matbro have been very well looked after, a credit to the owners and I also wonder how the modern machines will fare in 30-40 years time? With most new machines technology being very electronic based you wonder how it will hold up in years to come while the older machines being more mechanicaly minded are I imagine a lot more easier to maintain, repair and keep going over the years. Now I know all about your experiences and escapades from your youth, you’re still around to tell the tales though 🤣 The 1056 was very stable on those hills (believe me it was very slippery) but I think it’s superb traction was down to both a careful operator who knows the machine and land well and not overfilling the spreader thus staying well within the combinations safety limits! Ah yes that final landscape shot, I had to put that in as when I looked back I thought now that’s some view! Always great to hear from you my friend and I’m so glad you enjoyed the seasonal video but I was also happy to get home and have a nice warm bath! Take care Fraser, hope to hear from you soon. Cheers, David.

@@tomrob64 Now that’s a fine selection of classics throughout the years Tommy. Some great tractors there, I’d have been happy operating any of those. @davidwinthrop7077 I couldn't see the number of the chopper. We had a yellow 525, the chopper on the video looked like a 719. Our 719 was red. We sold the 8240 at our farm sale, the local straw dealer bought and the last thing I heard they had put a turbo on it. It always was the poor man's 83. Thank you for your comment
@ You’re exactly right it’s a 719 model so in between the red 719 and a 525. There were a lot of dealer fitted turbos fitted to 8240 & 7840s up here in the 1990s so I guess a 82 is a poor mans 83 and a 78 a poor mans 82 but with a turbo on the same power anyways and probably save a bit money too! I am a Massey man through and through but even I have to admit the Case IH six is the sweetest sounding engine of its era. Wonderful engines, but they all sound great
@@tommyzoo I have to agree with you, I’m a Massey man myself having grown up with them since I was a child but that Case IH engine note takes some beating, such a sweet roar out of them. Couldn’t agree more almost as sweet as Ford 8240 sound,,,,
@ Driving that trailed forager Kenny? Got to admit that’s some sound!
Good afternoon David and can I wish both Anna and yourself a Happy New Year and all the best for 2025. Now this video was a force to contend with, as these "six sixes" sure had a lot of grunt available, but all appear to do their job with great ease and poise. Having never driven any of these beasts (although I have many of their brothers/cousins), the one that caught my eye the most, was the Ford 8240 pulling the Kverneland 4-furrow reversible plough, especially the shot going uphill on the headlands, which must have been turned on so many times over the years and would be well compacted, but the 8240 was showing absolutely no signs of struggle or slippage and not even a puff of smoke. It was almost like watching the power and performance of a current era very high HP tractor. I am also sure that the MF 399 with the Cambridge rolls had levitation fitted, as it left very little signs of track marks at all, which is very impressive. All in, that was a great selection of tractors and equipment and it was great seeing the muck spreaders too, as I don't see much of that these days with all my neighbours being predominately 100% arable. Hope you enjoyed your time off over Christmas and New Year and will be thinking of you going back to work as I lay in my bed! (Sorry David, that was cruel) 😂😂. Thanks David. Cheers, Fraser.
@@frasermathers2287 And a very good afternoon and early evening to you Fraser and thank you from both of us and wishing you the same in return. Ah yes “Six Sixies” the title has been running in my head for a while now and talking about the grunt available I reckon on totalling the six up there’s about 700hp on tap! These machines and of the decade before are my era so I’ve had experience of a couple but not all in the past but you’re right in saying the Ford 8240 was making pulling that plough up some pretty sticky land look effortless without even a puff of smoke. The same goes for it driving the NH 719 forager, clearly working hard but without any reek just a glorious soundtrack through that straight pipe! As for the MF 399 and those Cambridge rolls, it was like it was almost floating on air and just skimming across the surface! It was a nice selection Fraser, very varied but all very distinct identity’s too which is what I love about this era of farm machinery and as for the muck spreaders if you lived down here you’d see plenty in action as I think almost every farmer I know still spreads the smelly solid stuff! I did enjoy the time off, well most of it anyways as I’ve ended up with the flu so after a visit to the out of hours doctor last night who gave me enough tablets that I’m rattling around instead of going back to work today as planned I’m signed off until the middle of next week so I’ll be lying in my bed too you cheeky bugger! (You can go off people you know 🤣🤣) Good to hear from you as always my friend, you take care and with this cold weather here (better than the horrendous rain we’ve had) keep wrapped up! Nice video,Christmas greeting from Co.Antrim. Are the outside clamps earth banked?Work best if done with heavy clay, far better than straight walls outside, can let the rain run off the side.Had walls on my outside clamps but bothered with rain damage down walls creating waste. Needed a fortune spent them so went to all bales. At my stage in life not justified making big investment required to put up covered silos, lot round here moving towards covered silos outside clamps be more used for bales. Why do the inside silos cover walls with plastic,no rainwater to worry about!Perhaps to save walls from acid of silage?
@@Magpie6639 Thanks Mark and Christmas greetings from Cumbria to you. A lot of good points there, I’m sure the clamp walls are earth banked and not concrete which as you say are prone to rain damage therefore contaminating the crop hence that’s why you saved yourself the waste and made the move to wrapped bale silage. A lot of money involved in constructing new buildings especially with rising costs elsewhere but most in my area seem to have undercover clamps. I think you’re correct on the inside walls being plastic lined, more than likely it’s to avoid effluent damage which over time will seep into cracks in the walls. All the best to you for 2025 Mark, hope to hear from you in the new year. Cheers, David.
Great video 🚜🚜
@@davidcollingwood1262 Thanks David, pleased you enjoyed the remainder of this past summer. Cheers, David.
Good evening David, and what a lovely fast moving video to round off the year. I had just came back in from hand delivering some Christmas cards round my neighbours and was frozen to the core, when I popped on your new video and seeing all the very green lush grass really made me want spring 2025 to be here. Made me think, especially for some of the younger guys working today, if they realise how lucky they are with such well powered tractors and good sized buck rakes and not the MF135s with tiny, in comparison buck rakes of our day. All the kit shown was really capable of doing the job, although I do have a liking for all JCB products. Having said that, and I am sure you know what’s coming, that good old MF390 with no cab, sure was making a mighty fine job of building that clamp and could climb the face with no issues. Well as the year-end nears David, I would also like to echo your gratitude, and say a big thank you to all the owners that allowed you to film on their farms which gave us the delight of such outstanding equipment. I would also like to say, and I am sure all your followers would agree, a massive thank you to you David, for bringing us such high-quality content, in a manner which concentrates on the tractors and equipment in beautiful surroundings doing what they do best, and that is working. Wishing you and Anna a Merry Christmas and may 2025 be a year of joy. (and more videos of course). Thanks for everything David. Cheers, Fraser.
@@frasermathers2287 And a very good evening to you Fraser and I hope you are well. Yes a fast moving video to conclude the year, almost as fast as Christmas is approaching! Sounds like you’ve had a busy afternoon, yes cold but better than the rain but keeps you active and just think how much you’ve saved on stamps! Ah yes doesn’t this year’s summer and those green fields seem so long ago, roll on Spring 2025! Yes not exactly an easy life but certainly a lot more output and comfort compared to the likes of those MF 135s with proper air-con (either doors off or the cab removed all together) and an old tin seat with straw filled fertiliser for comfort if you were lucky (I well remember those sore bum days!) Yes all capable machines, the JCBs especially the 419S are very impressive but the MF 390 is also a great outfit, plenty of pushing power for 80hp and very manoeuvrable in the confines of the closed pit. Yes a huge thanks for all the owners for kindly letting me film and post their wonderful machinery working on the land, they’re a very friendly bunch and I know from talking to them they love to see their equipment on film and to hear enthusiasts such as yourself complimenting them on its condition. Fingers crossed next year I’ve some new pastures and machines to visit, hopefully all going well I’ll be there to capture the action on film. Ah many thanks Fraser, your kind words make it all worthwhile, I love being out in the countryside anyways but it’s nice to capture that moment in time and for it to be appreciated by the likes of both you and other fellow farming enthusiasts. I’m sure we will have a nice Christmas as I hope you have too my friend and here’s to 2025 and hopefully a good spring/ summer season to get out in those fields. Take care Fraser and all the best. Cheers, David.

@@damianursusc362 Certainly is Damian. Can’t beat a MF 300 series!
Hello David, My apologies for my very late response to a very lively and enjoyable compilation video; this was due to not being so well last week and only now getting back up and going. As for the subject matter, there was not one of those combinations of equipment in the video which I did not enjoy. If I had to choose for innovative, then as you might have guessed, it would need to be the Fendt 828 and Mengele reverse drive combination which always brings a smile to my face. For performance and efficiency then its the Claas Jaguar SP 960, which was going through the crop as if the field was empty. (Could not have been far off of road gear). For the satisfaction of my nostalgia, then it has to be the JF FCT850 trailed harvester, and as it was in its 29th season, says as much about the owner/operator as it does about the longevity of the JF product. Of course cant forget about the, as you say "immaculate MF 7614" which looked stunning. Have to say all equipment in the video was excellent and is all still well capable of doing its job. Another brilliant video David and really has cheered me up today. Hope your well and looking forward to the up coming festivities. Thanks and Cheers, Fraser.
@@frasermathers2287 Good evening Fraser and absolutely no need for apologies my friend, it’s always a pleasure to hear from you and read your comments whenever you find the time to post them. I was just saying to Anna, my partner this last weekend that I hadn’t heard from Fraser and was hoping he was okay which clearly you weren’t? I hope your illness wasn’t anything too serious and you’re now on the mend and feeling a lot better. Now onto these foraging outfits and as you say they’re all wonderful outfits that although basically doing the same task harvesting the grass they’re all very different. Have to agree with you the Fendt/ Mengele reverse drive is very innovative and certainly a one off round here and like you always puts a smile on my face as does Jason it’s owner who is quite a character! As for the Claas Jaguar 960, it’s a flying machine and the trailer drivers need to be on their toes keeping up with it. I’ve definitely a soft spot for the JF FCT 850 though, it’s a beautifully kept and maintained machine, I’ve known the owners for many years and like all their machinery (especially that mint MF 7614) it’s a credit to them how well they look after their machinery. Will have to catch up with it again on its 30th anniversary in 2025! Yes a nice mix, hopefully we’ll have a good summer next year (this one definitely wasn’t one of the best) and I’ll catch up with a few more machines then. Thank you as always Fraser, I’m pleased the video cheered you up especially as there’s less daylight where the days seem shorter and the dark nights longer! I’m well thanks and looking forward to finishing work for the year next Wednesday and a well earned couple of weeks rest. I’m just ready to relax with a good book, watch a couple of old films, some precious time off with my partner and no alarm going off at 4.30 in the morning! I know Christmas can be a difficult time especially if you’ve lost someone close to you as I know you have. We both lost both our parents years ago and they’re always in our thoughts as is Alfie dog, our lovely golden Labrador who we lost 3 years ago after 12 years of fun and friendship. He was always so excited on Christmas day opening his presents (and of course going on an extra walk!) though he was more interested in the tasty treats we wrapped for him rather than the toys! Little fella is sadly missed! Take care my friend and keep yourself well. Cheers, David.
@@davidwinthrop7077 Thank you, David, for your very comprehensive and heartfelt response which really does mean a lot to me. I am feeling considerably better thanks and it is just part of dealing with a long list, which I won’t bore you with, of ailments gained over the years of working too many long hours, stress and not enough time off. Glad you’re looking forward to having time off with Anna, and from experience, it’s one of my regrets, of not doing more of that with Jan before I lost her. Like you, I have many thoughts at this time of year, which is when I lost Jan and of others in the family who are gone now. I am sure you will have many great memories of Alfie, as labs sure are wonder dogs and I can just picture him standing at your side as you are making a video of all these great machines which give us such joy. Wishing you both a great Christmas and thanks again for your friendship David. Cheers, Fraser.
@@frasermathers2287 Morning Fraser and apologies for my late reply as it’s been a very busy last couple of days doing some last Christmas gift shopping and I’ve been out with my band last night (sitting in the quiet now after the loud music last night!) Your more than welcome my friend, like you have in your past I work very long hours and it catches up with us and we seem to spend more time in work than we do with our loved ones. Me and Anna only seem to get a couple of hours company through the weekly evenings (she works weekends) as I need to be in bed by 9 as the alarm goes off at 4.30 so each minute is precious to us and we try to make the most of it and enjoy our time off together. It can indeed be a difficult time of year Fraser especially when you’ve lost a loved one as you have with Jan and many memories come into our thoughts but hopefully good ones and not dwell on the sadness too much. Yes we lost Alfie just before Christmas 2021, it was heartbreaking but he didn’t like to see us sad so we think of the happy times with him. Yes he was always with me in the fields but as for standing by my side, well he was more interested in exploring the field and surroundings himself following his nose as usual! We will enjoy Christmas, just 2-3 days off together but we’ll make the most of it and thank you for your friendship too Fraser, you know I love to and look forward to hearing from you when I post a video, it makes it all worthwhile having such great feedback that is so genuine and warming. Take care my friend, regards David.
@@frasermathers2287 I would like to put together a small and personal gift for Fraser as a thank you, we will have to put our heads together and work out a way how I can get it to you.
@@davidwinthrop7077 Hi David, thanks for your reply. Glad you have got your Christmas gift shopping done. You sound a very busy man, what with your work and the band too, so I can imagine that finding enough time for everything is difficult. Yes it is difficult without Jan and today is the anniversary if her passing, however I do have many many memories of the good times we had and she is always on my mind every day. It will be a quiet Christmas this year, just me and my son as unfortunately he recently went through a break up, but we will make the most of the time spent together, as I don't get to see enough of him. I hope both Anna and you have a great Christmas and enjoy your time with each other. I also seen your other message David and appreciate the very kind gesture, although you already give me a great gift and that is through your brilliant and much appreciated videos and our chats. Is the harvester on the fendt reverse drive a home made adaption? Looks great😊

Cracking video David, really hard to pick a favourite out of all that lot. I’m a big fan of the Jaguar with the Scottish flag, that is properly unique and very smart, but the reverse drive Fendt always takes some beating!
@@jacooboophotography Many thanks Jacob. Yes very difficult to pick a favourite as all are very smart machines. If I had to choose it would be the trailed foragers, not only because they’re getting less and less used but because these two have been with the owners for a long time and both are so well maintained and therefore very reliable year after year. Have to admit the reverse drive Fendt is some machine though! Cheers, David.
That’s a good a call, I do always like to see the Jaguar 75 at work, that’s a machine I’ve known forever and as you say they’re the only foragers that haven’t changed for 20 or so years!

Driving it like a moron.
Although it’s a few years since I last drove a tractor with a baler on the back, that sound of the ram and the click of the bale sledge is so evocative and brings back many happy memories. I had an MF 124 baler which lasted me 35 years and was still going strong when I sold it.
@@billd7575 I couldn’t have described that better myself Bill and I’m pleased the video has evoked those happy memories of your past. Fantastic balers the MF 124 and judging by the sound of it yours was very well maintained over those 35 years. Great comment Bill and good to hear from you. Cheers, David.

Excellent footage. Got no hay made myself this year.
@@Dave-jm5yo Many thanks Dave. Yes it was a very poor summer for haymaking and I was surprised I managed to get any footage at all. The owners of the International outfit who farm in the fells were worried that they wouldn’t even get a round bale silage crop and then after weeks of rain the last week of July they and their neighbours managed to get both. A terrible summer really so hopefully 2025 will be a better one and you manage to get your hay crop too (would love to film that!) Cheers, David.

Good evening David, and this is just what I needed today to give me a lift. What a wonderful sight to see all of these great combinations working away making hay the way it was always made, (well in our era anyway). Regarding the black and white footage blending into the colour, well you know where I stand on that one, and have to say you really did it justice with great filming and editing David. Fantastic to see the MF 3070 with the MF 224 baler, and the beautiful International 885XL with the IH 445 baler with correct matching combinations. At one time, farmers we very brand loyal always matching field equipment with tractors by brand, but I suppose there was less choice in those days. Hard to say which of the combinations I loved the most, but have to say the International 885XL and IH 445 baler really looked and sounded outstanding. However the high light for me was that good old International 475, even with the fear stories from my past I told you about before. Hope you are well and coping with this poor weather just now, lots of snow and ice up here. Thanks as always. Cheers, Fraser.
@@frasermathers2287 A good evening to you too Fraser, hope you are well and I’m pleased the video has given you a lift and brought back a bit of summer to these now long, dark winter nights! Yes traditional haymaking is definitely from our era (a pair of old fogeys if ever there was one!) but still great to see and pleasing to see the old tradition being carried on. I’m pleased you liked the black and white merging into colour and actually it was you that planted the idea into my head re. your comment on the classic MF baling video from earlier this year (no royalties though, Christmas is fast approaching so money is a bit tight 🤣 However I thought I would try it and I’m pleased it came out well and thanks for the suggestion and compliments. They’re all lovely outfits, beautifully kept and as you say farmers were very loyal to their brands and local dealers back then, maybe not as much now though as sadly a few of the smaller local dealers are disappearing especially in this area and the emphasis is more on who can supply a 200hp tractor at the best price! I’m with you on the International 475 though, a beautiful old girl, hard to believe she’s 46 years young and an absolute credit to the owners and yes I well remember your escapades from your youthful days! 🤣 No snow here but been a chilly week, -7 degrees at work this morning but I’m tough skinned and would rather have a frost than wet weather during my 12 hour shift at the grindstone! Thank you too my friend, another dose of the past summer in a couple of weeks time. Take care Fraser, cheers David.
@@davidwinthrop7077 Well I have to agree David re the "a pair of old fogeys" comment as that age number keeps going the wrong way 😂.
