The East of Staveley Group | The Outlying Fells | Wainwright Walks | The Lake District
This week, we decided to tackle the East of Staveley Group in the Lake District, It looked like a really good walk, and I was intrigued as to why it included two unnamed fells. It started off great until I took a bit of a wrong turn-I should have been paying closer attention to the GPS. I wouldn’t say this is the most dog-friendly Wainwright walk either; there are quite a few obstacles along the way. We managed to get around in the end, though, so that’s another four ticked off the Outlying Fells list!
Have a great week, people!

As I mentioned in the last video, after Knipe Scar, I headed up to Pooley Bridge to do another Outlying Fells route. This one was really good and only took a few hours-honestly, some of the best views I've ever seen in the Lake District. Another couple ticked off the Outlying Fells list! Have a great week, people! Right, people! After getting a few comments on my videos and thinking about it since finishing the original 214 Wainwrights, I've decided to take on the Wainwright Outlying Fells-116 hills around the Lake District. I’ll be breaking the series down into 34 routes. They’re not too big and seem pretty easy. I kicked things off with the Knipe Scar route as I was driving past on the M6, heading towa...

Via Ferrata Xtreme | Honister Slate Mine | Lake District

This week, we took on the Via Ferrata Xtreme at the Honister Slate Mine in the Lake District. It cost £65 per person and is designed to be a 3-hour activity, which ours took, though the duration can vary depending on the group's pace. If you've never tried it, it's definitely worth booking. I'll be honest, the Infinity Bridge scared me a bit as it feels like your not in control. You can pay an ...

This week we wild camped at Bowscale Tarn, been on the list for a couple of years and it didn't disappoint, its a lot more chilled out than most of the more popular tarns around the lake district although you get a lot of people just wandering up for a swim, this video is quite a lot of waffle but still worth posting so you can get a idea of what its like. have a great bank holiday people. Great video, really enjoyed it. Definitely one to add to the “to do list”. We look forward to seeing more of your adventures! Liked 👍🏼 and subscribed from a fellow TH-camr 👌
Nice one mate, just subbed yours aswell, watching your brecon beacon videos there, gives me some ideas for when I get up to Wales next 👌
Look forward to seeing a few boggy meltdowns on these Vlogs Matt 😂😂 enjoy, I have seen another vlog and he used the Marshalls some are B😮nkers Enjoy 🥾🥾⛰️⛰️💙💙
Looking at a lot of them winter probably isnt the best tine to be doing them, need to tae a scuba diving suit with you 😂
@MattDoesMountains last winter we picked of all the shorter ones, left the Shap area till last area to complete
Really interesting... I was looking for a view of the Papagayo caravan/campsite and surrounding area so this was really informative and helpful.👊🏼
No problem mate, glad you took something from the video, thanks for watching 👌
Just done this what a lace
Place*
Its a belter mate, one of the best bothies in the lakes, ill defo go back so I can actually sleep inside it next time😅 Just subbed your channel, I seen Chris' video yesterday and heard him talking to you, your like a mystery mate, you should get yourself on the camera 😎👍
Is your dog not small enough to just pass over the wall between you? That’s what most people do, unless they are physically too big!🙂
She's a bit of a weird size, smallish but long and quite heavy, Dom doesn't like picking her up either so its a pain trying to pass her over walls, otherwise I would 😅
Great to see you both out and about - looking forward to following your routes on the outlying fells.
Thanks mate, Will try and get out at least 2-3 weeks per month and get a few boxed off over the next few months 👌
Farmer was a man United fan 😊
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Majestic scenery man, area looks and feels so enjoyable! Love it
Apart from getting lost I really liked it mate, another one for the memories 😃
Just here as planning to do this one on Saturday mate. Glad I watched this as will plan to leave earlier to factor in the daylight hours. Glad you got that bevvie in the end 😂
Haha I needed one after it mate, I remember we done this in scorching heat which slowed us down but its still a long day regardless of the weather, brilliant route though, Have a good walk 😃
Loving these videos - I’ve started the outlayers the Nav is harder than being on the high fells 🤣
Tell me about it Gem, hope your enjoying them so far, you can get away half arsing the proper wainwrights but these need a proper look at the map 🤣
@ did bigland barrow a couple of weeks ago wanted to make a circular walk so made me own route up almost lost the dog in the shoulder height bracken 🤣🤣
Theres been a lot of wall and fence hopping on the outliers so far I have found. Might need to come up with something for the dog. Luckily our dog is only small so I can jump over with him under my arm. I still think most of the outliers are harder than the most of the 214 seriously. Still worth it though
Is there any routes you have done that are a bad headache? I'm probably going to leave her behind for some as its not as simple, wave got a Julius harness with a handle but I tested it today and its still really awkward. I might just plan future ones with my own drawn out maps on the GPS so I can avoid anything bad, There a really good challenge and well worth doing as you say
farmers have to now lock the gates to prevent their stock and equipment being stolen. most dog walkers now have the dog harness with a handle to help to lift them over the walls and stiles
Nice one Barry, didn't realise you could buy a harness with handles attached, worth me looking into for future walks, the locks make sense now, always wondered what the idea was, I wouldn't of thought much theft goes on down in the lake district either but something else I wasn't aware of 👍
Keep up with your videos enjoying them
Not a well known fact - I built those cairns on Potter's Fell 1 and 2, as when I walked them, there were no cairns. So I collected whatever rocks I could find and put them on the summits 😂 Keith was with me too, it was his walk, we crossed that same bogland 😅 We parked in same spot too, the bridge is called Barley Bridge
I remember you all did this walk when Keith started the outliers, He was telling me about the boat house on the fishing lake, Good that you've put something on the potters fells so there's some sort of marker, nothing worse than it being a bit of grass 😂 its a decent walk tbf if you haven't got a dog and go the right way 😅 could even just do the 2 main ones and avoid the potters and the bogs, I could see decent paths to leading to both. I was going to do another route straight afterwards from that parking spot but the dog was having non of it, might return on the weekend and do the other 👌
Hi Matt. I enjoy your videos and did this walk myself at the beginning of the month. The names on the map are confusing! Wansfell has 2 tops. The one with the best view is Wansfell Pike. The other top is the Wainwright summit and is called BAYSTONES (Wansfell). This has the small stone cairn on it. There is another summit marked on the map just beyond BAYSTONES. This is actually a Birkett called WANSFELL (Baystones). It is just a grassy mound and is just under a meter lower than the Wainwright summit. Confused? Cheers, Paul
Hi Paul, Yeah I remember realising this after I done this walk, I ended up going back over them a few weeks later, there's a few wainwright fells with multiple summits and I always just tried to go to the highest one or all of them if possible, I did really like the views from this fell though, very confusing though mate haha, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching👌
Loving these Outliers, I hope you do them all mate. Thanks for sharing . 🙏🙏🙏
Ill get there over time mate, thanks for watching 👌
good to have you back our kid havn,t seen you for a bit but being in liverpool have you ever been to my test place i test my gear ashhurst beacon or parbold hill around there have alook bro you like it
Nice one mate, I haven't been to those places but they look nice mate, that beacon looks very interesting and Ill go and check it out, my brother lives in Billinge next to those gaffs you've mentioned, Billinge hill is worth checking out if you've not been, loads of woodland and places to camp, I want to camp Winter hill at some point as well 👍
@@MattDoesMountains yes its good at the beacon loads of woods hiking trails and even a cafe i do all my camping there even the gold course closed 2 yrs ago and its massive and great for camp
Matt as the daylight shortens now, pick off the smaller oners or twoers. Leave the Shap Fells till next spring or summer as they are full on commando
Great idea mate, haha your not the only one who's mentioned the Shap fells, will defiantly be putting them on the back burner for now 😅
That is an amazing view of Ullswater. October really can be great in terms of weather.
One of the best views in the whole of the Lakes, your right mate, October is a really nice time in the year 😎
Thanks for sharing Matt, the Outlying Fells look ideal for this time of year with dark nights approaching... Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks Nathan, Exactly what I was thinking mate, its nice to not have to get up at 4/5am to make the drive down to the Lakes 👌
ya must have missed the cairn on dunmallard.. i intend to go back and build it bigger shortly.. good stuff.. cant wait to see you tackle the shap fells.. its like waiting for someones reaction to 'the red wedding' on game of thrones haha.. tek care lad :)
Yeah mate just seen a picture online that there is one, looked around for a while and didn't come across it, make sure you make it big enough to see 😂 Shap was the worst area on the 214 wainwrights for me 😅 cant wait to see what the outlyers have in store now that you've mentioned it 😂
This is a nice area for hiking!
Definitely, some of the best views in the lake district 👌👌
Nice going Matt. Just how I remember it when my Dad took me up about 20 years ago. Planning to take one of my boys up at some point. Your perspective is really helpful for planning. No chance if that weather though, what views!
Thanks Mike, Im glad youve took something from the video, Its such a good scramble aswell and I love the surrounding areas, the views are something else 😍
I’ve got one of these. Does the job.
I like it Eddie and not just because it got it for a video 😅
Look forward to seeing more of Bella. She looks a gorgeous dog x
She will be in loads of upcoming videos 😁😍
Boss video lad, makes me want to go up there and explore! Looks like a nice place to wild camp.
Nice one mate, the top by the summit would of been perfect for a camp, some of the lesser known placea are always boss aswell with not many people about 👌
Such a gorgeous area man! Shots and atmosphere are amazing 👌
Very surprised at the views mate 😍 Thanks for watching 👌
Well done mate. It's such a beautiful walk. The views are incredible. I've just done it myself for the first time. I loved it. I had beautiful weather on my walk. Good vid👌👍
One of the best fells in the Lake District mate 😍 Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching 👌
Ah man, I only found this as I was looking to see if your outlying fells video was up yet… and I saw PLAYA BLANCA! We were at that very hotel in May. Great running landscape, I did the volcano (Montana Rojo), for sunrise one morning, then a 10 mile sunrise run up the big mountain, back along the lower ridge, and back across the Papagayo Penninsula. The advantage of that beach is it has the two cool beach bars on top of the cliff 🍻 Great holiday 😎
I've stayed all over Lanzarote but Playa Blanca is the best for me, such a nice backdrop with those mountains and nice beach walks, plenty of walking to do in the area. loved that hotel apart from the wind around the pool 😅 Sounds like you had a great time and done some boss stuff mate 👌😍
Fair play lad. Ey, you started the outlying fells yet ?
More than likely this week mate, going to try and do a few over a couple of days, will have some videos in the coming weeks 👍
Looks like a good little gadget for a day trip or a wild camp to be fair 👍👍👍
Its really good mate, pricey like but I can imagine some people would be happy to buy it
Imagine the idea of a climb.
I know mate 😎
@@MattDoesMountains Did it in 1980 and again in 1996. Would love to do it again but I'm disabled now. Great memories though.
Where abouts did you park for this one mate?
Search Seathwaite Farm Camping and there's a long road leading up to it called the Styhead Pass, you can park about 50 cars on the side of the lane, just leave enough room for the farmer to drive his tractor up and down, then just head up from the farm to the tarn 👍
Great video, where did you camp? And did you walk from the campsite?
I was camping in Ulllswater holiday park with my family for the weekend, I had to drive about 15/20 minutes to the parking 👍👍
It’s a great walk, I did it Wednesday just gone, right on the back of the Buttermere marathon the previous day.
Fair play mate, 2 big walks on the bounce, really good though as you say 👌😎
Canny farm defo
Kirkby Mate 👍👍
Tackled this today, just got past the bad step and the rain came in, made that last scramble a bit more difficult with how slippery the rocks were
Well done mate 👌 yeah always got to be careful with the weather on this, went up in bad weather once when I was inexperienced and lost my bearings, nearly walked off the side 🙃
Hi Matt - we did your exact route a few weeks ago - was excellent- particularly the Yewbarrow ascent & descent. Tough walk and we had poor conditions but your guidance really helped so thanks! (My 13 year did a YT video at ‘LoisTravels’ )… keep ‘em coming!!
Hi mate, this was one of my favorite routes on the wainwrights apart from Kirk Fella assent, absolute leg burner 🙃 just watched her videos and they are great mate, she speaks brilliant on camera for a kid, took me ages to get used to it, always good to look back on the videos and hopefully she keeps it going long term 👌
@@MattDoesMountains Awesome - thanks Matt and for the comment! 👊
did this route today, should have taken your advice on middle fell, looked at a different way but seemed to add miles so thought sod it will just go the same way you did, nearly ruined me going up there 🤢🤣
Haha it's worth it in the end but I remember feeling written off walking up that incline, always funny to look back on once you've done it though 😂👌
Class video. Recently done Jack’s rake and was looking for the next challenge.
Thank you mate, really good scramble this one, just keep an eye on the weather to be safe 👍 have a good one 👌👌
