Building a Homestead In South Africa - We've Lost Control Of The Homestead, Urgent Chicken Run Build

- In this Homestead update we admit how the chickens have taken over. There's poop everywhere, we're losing out on eggs and its putting both of us in a "Fowl" mood. New chicken coops and runs are definitely needed to get the birds under control.
It's time to get this Homestead back on track otherwise we are both going to lose our minds. Join us for another edition on the funny farm!

Hi. I also build my coops with stuff that's available. I believe re-purposing is part and parcel of homesteading, without going maplotter. Chickens are fairly easy.
Just a pointer on the roosting bars: chickens prefer to sleep with their feet flat, rather than clinging to a bar. For standard chickens, that would require a roosting bar of 5cm width, with rounded edges.
Wrt nesting coops. The ladies like to have privacy - & time to do their thing in leisure. So: rule of thumb is, one nesting coop per every three hens + one extra. For standard chickens (not bantams), that means a box measuring 40X40X40cm. Hanging a curtain in front, realy tickles their fancy. Here I've even re-purposed old frost covers...
Happy homesteading.😉
If you want to get rid of some of those chickens I will happily take some from you! Looking to start a chicken coop for eggs--starting a homestead also.
All the chickens are properly housed and under control now - happily laying eggs and not pooping on my stoep any longer, so think we'll hang on to them 😁 Good luck with your homesteading journey and thanks for watching!
It's so nice to see other South Africans homesteading! I also have a naughty chicken!
We're trying 😁 All our chickens are naughty!!!
@overberghomesteading I'm learning as I go. But so we go and we grow, I'm in the Freestate BTW.
I laughed so much with the "fowl mood" pun/neology! OMG you have a beautiful plot! Wow!
Definitely need a good laugh now and then! 😄 Thanks for watching!
What a blessing all those eggs!! Truly free R..EIGN..GE!!
Free R..EIGN..GE - Exactly! 😂
We had three groups of different breeds of chickens at one stage and five of them decided that my car's roof was the best roosting spot. My car looked like a chicken coop for a long time until we contained that little challenge. I know your frustration with chicken poop everywhere, especially when you walk barefoot and step in a fresh one... For their own safety from predators all our chickens are now behind lock and key.
Had to laugh at that one - the top of your car being the best roosting spot 😂 and yes, barefoot wasn't an option here before either...
Welcome to plot life......i had hens....1laid eggs on dofa next tp bull terrier and staffie. The other on 😂my 😂our bed😂😂😂
Oh my goodness 😂 But we have piggies on our beds in the morning.....
Is it possible to show us more how you build things. Extra ideas can help other people too
Thanks for watching and yes, others have also mentioned that. I always get stuck into a project and think, dam, I should've filmed that and then it's too late. Lol, will definitely keep it in mind going forward.
hahahaha😅......fowl mood
Exactly 😆😆
The chickens have been eating the insects. Now they are going to miss out on that.
Yes, unfortunately so. But we've decided to let them all out every Friday to roam the plot and get some nice exercise at least - and some of those insects. 👍🏻 We call it Free Range Friday 😆
What also works, is letting them out an hour or 2 before sunset. In 2 hours, they can get a lot of work done. By sunset, they'll return of own volition to roost - & by that time the ladies are done laying. So - no more easter-hunts!
😋🍗🐓
How do you wear a jersey in this heat wave 😅😅😱
LOL, this weather is crazy. I'm sitting here in December with that same jersey on this morning! 🙈😂
It's not home steadying in SA it's maploting. 😄 we're not Americans.
Agreed
Flip, you hit the nail on the head here 😂 I keep telling Elsa that we are no more than "Maplotters". Those Americans are next level man!
Ok, Elsa and I just had a chat - I think in SA we should be called "Maplotsteaders" What do you think? 😁
I do disagree. Maplotter, is having a junk car sitting under the apricot tree, with the enjin hanging in the tree. It's homesteading the kômmen (met-'n-kappie-op-die-"o") way. Junk piling up everywhere. It's a choice.
