"Once Upon a December" Cover
My cover of "Once Upon a December" from Anastasia (1997), written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. I was trying out a new mike. I'm not completely satisfied with the results, but I guess I need to experiment more.

Autopsy of a Bad Scene - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Normally in my "Autopsy of a Bad Line" series, I talk about a single line and why it's bad, or at least why it doesn't work in the context of its scene. However, for this one, I decided I needed to talk about why this scene as a whole just doesn't work in the context of the film. Hope you enjoy! All footage belongs to Lucasfilm and Lionsgate.

You're God's Child - Christian Rewrite of "I'm a Star" from Disney's Wish

I decided "I'm a Star" was completely beyond fixing, so I would do a Christian rewrite instead. Properly this should be sung by a children's choir or VBS group, but I've only got myself, and unfortunately, this isn't a style I'm used to singing (I mostly do ballads or operatic pieces) so I apologize if it sounds a bit off sometimes. My rewrite of "This Wish" from Disney's Wish. I decided to get rid of all the slant rhymes so it would sound more like a musical theater piece. The instrumental is the demo, slowed to 90%. I transposed the key from F to G, since the original key was a little too low for me. Sorry if the sound balance is a little off; I'm not very good at that sort of thing. Amazing understanding!!
God gave you a beautiful voice, so might as well use it - right?
❤ my favorite song😊
There are a lot of great Christian books out there. But most were written before the CBA took over non secular publishing in America.
❤
Yes! I'm a Christian personally want to become a writer/graphic novelist and I certainly relate to this. Im not personally wanting to directly address Christianity in my writing, but simply show such values point blank. To me secular media is just simply anything that doesn't directly address Christianity, of which is so hugely open ended of a category. Many works that are secular do have messages that coinside with the Christian faith. I also even look into media that disagrees with my beliefs just because I want to understand that perspective and I am not personally afraid learning such would ever hurt my faith. Its let me understand people better.
Great video essay, and you hit all the right points, even the application advice at the end. Indeed, it is a balance, and a HEALTHY exposure to secular media at least makes us aware of the world we need to fix OR avoid. How can we be "sheep in the midst of wolves" without knowing what the wolves are?
In reference to getting more money to schools, unfortunately, that often happens, but with the -- to the public -- unexpected result that more executives are hired for implementation of "improvements," and not higher teacher pay, not better teaching nor counseling more equipment, but more tests.
@@tyshekka Too true.

but i'm so glad you did this.

4:01, no, he makes it pretty clear that a good chunk of wishes don’t get granted
Awesome insights as always. Thank you for fixing that awful 'warning sign' lyric 😂
As an actual Christian not just saying that I'm Christian for this comment, I can confirm that this slaps hard
Honestly, this song is just plain nonsense and didn’t even need to exist.
This is ALL just prejudicial nit-picking to justify the fact that you don't like this film. Your scene comparison is from a COMPLETELY different film, with completely different tone, rhythm and characterisation. The original Star Wars is known for the energy in it's storytelling - it's punchy, quick, and rooted in old fashioned adventure. You might as well say the romance element in the film SPEED is badly written, using When Harry Met Sally as a comparison. If you want to hone in on dialogue to explain why you think a film or scene is 'bad' - pick a dialogue heavy film.
First off, this was a request from a subscriber. Second, why are you harping on about the dialogue? This is Autopsy of a Bad SCENE, not Line. The line itself is only part of it. Check the title before you comment. Third, I am not comparing Akeelah’s overarching plot to Star Wars; I am merely comparing a certain aspect of characterization to make a point. There is nothing wrong with comparing films of different genres if they share something in common (or rather, supposed to share). Finally, your comment tells me that you are simply upset that so many people dislike this film. Learn to live with it. If you like this film, more power to you. There are shows and movies that I love that I know other people could rip apart. I just accept its flaws and enjoy what I like about it. But if you dislike videos criticizing this movie, I suggest you check the title and avoid them.
No time to loose to one-up Han because we need to pointlessly kill him off an hour later.
I heard somewhere that that was Harrison Ford's request...
I think you’re really cool. Thanks for the thorough take on “woke”
Eloquent can also mean vividly expressive or revealing
True. I still say “elegant” would sound more natural, though.
I love the point that you had made about woke's original definition! I really do feel like it became worse over time. I also wanted to make a recommendation. If you haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, there is a lot of depth and theological themes in it. I know your not a film reviewer, but I thought you might find it thought provoking. Also fair warning, it is a pretty dark film despite being MCU/Disney.
Love listening to your perspective. Lots of good stuff here 👍
Ehhh the prequels have always faced a great deal of criticism. They are not "more or less liked."
They have been since the sequels came out. Lesser of two evils, I guess.
Disney destroyed Star wars
My main issue is the entire film. It's a tawdry knock off of Starwars. Youth with dreams of leaving, lives on desert world, check. Droid with secret plans found by youth, check. Youth discovers they've magical powers. check. Youth sets off on quest to return droid, check. Bad guys have infeasibly large base/weapon, check. Rebels attack base/weapon before it can attack. Check Shot of millennium falcon flying away as base explodes. Check. Story has character arc and likable main character... well Starwars does.
This isn't just an example of a bad scene....it's an example of why Rey was a poorly written character period....she EARNED nothing...she was just automatically perfect in every situation she was thrown into.
Good thing I boycotted this remake last year. I'm tired of people bashing and roasting the 1989 Little Mermaid as a bad movie all because "Ariel is a badly written weak, helpless, and passive damsel in distress who puts everyone in danger (just for a boy) and has to be rescued by everyone while learning nothing in the end." The Little Mermaid started the Disney Renesance so it should be getting the same amount of love and respect as Disney's other beloved animated classics like Aladdin or The Lion King. But, no. All I had to hear was during the 2010s was "The Little Mermaid is a bad movie", "It is one of the worst movies I've ever seen", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit or The Great Mouse Detective started the Disney Renesance. Not the Little Mermaid", "if you end up rooting for the villain and not the hero, you have a problem with your movie", and so on. You get the idea. Even the cast and crew of the remake dismissed the original film as problematic and claimed that the remake was superior. Based on the critisim I was forced to live with over the years, I was worried that people would love the remake more than the original because I thought the remake was going to fix the problems people had with the original film and make people love the remake more than the original. The remake would go on to becoming a triumphant masterpiece while the original 1989 would be forgotten, ignored, and erased (like Song of the South). But, boy was I wrong. It ended up becoming a critical and box office disappointment due to: 1. Bad CGI effects 2. Overly long pacing that drags the movie 3. Pointless New Songs 4. Actors given bad direction 5. The changes to the story that either ruin the narrative, make no sense, don't play a key role in the plot, miss the point of the original film, or were just pointless.
Also, the dress looks Grecian, and Triton is from Greek mythology; he was going off what he knew.
Ok, So I'm not a mechanic, but I am an engineer. Bypassing a component of a machine is a thing you can do while it is operating. You put in a jumper wire, then remove the malfunction component. Of course the consequence of this is that you will no longer have the function that component was providing. Sometimes that is acceptable if it is only temporary and it cannot be a component that is critical to your immediate need. For instance, if that component was using power to create atmosphere in the ship, but it was shorting out, causing a current overload, you could bypass it so your propulsion drive continues to work, but now you are no longer creating atmosphere. This assumes the compressor she bypassed was not immediately needed, AND it was part of the drive circuit they needed. If you think you have enough air in the ship already for the next hour or just immediately to get out of danger, you can deal with it later. So ripping out a component, providing that you put in a jumper, is plausible. But the fact that she knew better than Han, was stupid and totally unnecessary. There were plenty of other opportunities to establish her character as a gifted mechanic and pilot without bringing down an established hero. Han paid his dues, he risked everything for the rebellion and lost a lot for the principle of standing up for the light, and has earned respect. He didn't deserve this humiliation of this story.
Does bypassing something really look like that though? Seemed more like me frantically yanking plugs from the socket to hopefully stop the sparks flying from the attached power strip.
@@DoodsUnited She was messing around inside the panel first, before she yanked it out. That could be a time where you remove a ground wire to use it as your bypass wire, connect each end, then you can pull out the bypassed component like that, but practically speaking it would look less dramatic. Once the power and neutral are disconnected, then the component is basically just free to fall so you would just hold it with your hand to take it away, place on the floor, etc. So these things are plausible, but the scene still sucks because of the unearned nature of the young upstart showing up the veteran, as is illustrated competently in this video.
Watch The Empire Strikes Back. It's made clear that Han is a shitty mechanic and it's played for laughs.
Her expression though, holding that component up like it's a brilliant solution. This would have made more sense if she had been scavenging parts specifically to repair and rebuild the Falcon but that would just make too much sense. The Falcon has to be a ship she knows of but thinks is junk and ignores, only using as a last resort.
The sequel trilogy was intentionally made to disrespect the original characters. Kathleen Kennedy made it clear over and over again the contempt she had for everything that had been established by the series and it's fans. Her anger and bitterness irrevocably damaged something beloved by my generation and it means nothing to her.
Rey is my favorite character what do you mean? Haha, kidding… kidding…😂
Great analysis!
Star Wars has been bad for the last 40 years
Akeelah and the Bee scenes! I was not expecting that ❤
Great analysis!
You obviously don't understand modern movies. Rey is better at everything because she is a Strong Female Character. Han, Chewie and Finn are all males, which obviously means they are inferior to the SFC. And how did the SFC gain these traits? Shut up, misogynistic jerk! Just accept that women rule, and men are no longer necessary, except as foils to show how much better women are.
There was never any need for 7-9
There wasn't a need. But if they had been well done, they would have been appreciated.
When she kicked Kylo’s butt literally the first time she picked up a saber, I knew it was gonna be bad. Here’s a woman who’s spent her entire life inside an old walker yet she knows everything there is to know about a ship she’s on for the first time.
Recently re watched Empire Strikes Back.. such a well made story telling film, each scene just has something in it & not to cheesy ... the new films .. omg cringe
If Rey is so brilliant intellectually and mechanically, and in touch with the Force, why didn’t she cobble together a ship from all the starship debris left lying around and get off the planet?
She was waiting for her parents to come for her
For 15 years?
@@rumblehat4357 She was left in slavery and drudgery since age 4. She made tallies on a wall every day. Rey is clearly deluding herself that her parents will come back to her, but it's the only way she knows how to survive.
As a British person my only isssue with this scene is the infuriating 'RP' pronunciation of the word 'bypassed'. Because there isn't an 'r' in the word bypassed. This broadcast-standard BBC 'received pronunciation' adopted by drama-schools and most private-schools has twisted my language to a point where it is almost impossible to listen to without biting down on a stick! It's Past... Not Parsed. It's Cast nor Carsed! Peace and best wishes to you arl (all). 🇬🇧😉🇺🇲 (Cue national anthem on warped casette)
This scene, alongside the scene where Leia hugs Rey instead of Chewie after finding out that Han has died, are typical of the terrible, terrible writing decisions that were made in the sequel trilogy.
you're criticizing a slightly used napkin you found while rummaging through a landfill
It was a request.
An autopsy of this ‘autopsy’: The film establishes Reys familiarity with The Falcon calling it garbage and pointing out Unkar’s modifications including the compressor. The compressor is interfering with the normal function of the ship Han was previously familiar with. The point of the scene is to yes show Rey’s mechanical aptitude, but more importantly how that impresses Han and piques his interest, with Rey having already expressed her admiration for Han as a legendary smuggler this starts their sort of found father/daughter relationship which adds to her character arc of finding family, choosing not to go back to Jakku and let go of her past waiting for parents who aren’t coming back. If someone hands me a game console i haven’t played in over a decade and they inverted the controls and someone realizes that’s the problem and sets them back for me I wouldn’t call the a Mary Sue who’s upstaged or emasculated me
“Piques”
This just shows KK’s desire to destroy what she perceived as a patriarchy in star wars, which did not exist. Mon Mothma was in charge of the rebellion. Leia was an absolute badass soldier in that fight. kk had warped ideas based her own misinformed and ignorant views.
That's really Disney's issue overall, they can't write well enough to make their protagonists appear competent they need to make the existing cast appear incompetent. Poor writing.
Also WHY is Rey and not Chewie in the co-pilot seat..
I think he was injured, or something.
2:20 this always felt like a rip off of firefly. There’s a scene when we first meet Kaylee and she talks about pulling the compressor because it “just gums up the works”.
Wow this was always tickling my mind but couldn’t get it
Remember that the prequels used to get all the hate, until the sequel trilogy came out. You know the sequel trilogy has to be pretty bad when people yearn for the days of the prequels...at least those were still Star Wars! I can at least somewhat stomach Ep7 to a degree. Episode 8 only had a couple cool scenes, Holdo's kamikaze and the Rey/Kylo throne room fight scene. Episode 9 I don't remember much because I only saw it once and was in the theater. I never had any inkling of ever watching that again. Too bad what they've done to Star Wars.
The problem is that they didnˋ t know how to handle with the old and the new characters. Han at this moment is iconic. Rey is... nothing. But the script wanted to focus on the new characters for a new audience. The old characters are just decoration, fan sevice. To show "oh this is Star Wars and not just another completely differenct sci fi fantasy story. In the end they destroyed a legend and could not build up a new band of interesting characters we want to know more about. So the Sequels fail.
