Hi. My name is Phil Jones and I am a passionate biker and full-time Commercial Photographer based in Essex, UK.

Ford Pop Hot Rod - First Start and Revival
This is my 1959 Ford Pop Hot Rod, which I've owned for 27 years. It took me five years to build the car, but sadly it has been off the road for over four years, and the engine hasn't been started in over two years.
Sadly, it has been off the road and collecting dust for over 4 years. In this video, I will attempt to fire up the engine and get it running again, and if all goes according to plan, I then plan to transform a rather neglected and sorry-looking vehicle back to its former glory.
So if you are trying to restore and revive your old car and in need of a car SOS, then stick around and I’ll pass on my tips and advice to help get your pride and joy back on the road, and looking at its best!

01:08 Reviving My Ford Pop Hot Rod
03:33 How to start a car thats been unused for a long time
05:55 1966 Mustang
07:55 Out of the garage
Thanks to my friend Phil for all his help, not just on this day, but whenever I need an extra pair of hands and support.

@@TheAdventuresofPhilJonesnice. Btw my favourite method to apply the product to specific nut and bolt heads is also with a detail paintbrush. I spray a little into the upturned cap and use the brush. The aerosol seems hopeless, it sprays it everywhere to the point where I end up wiping 80% of it back off!
The stuff is designed for the internals of aircraft frames to prevent corrosion from condensation. . It’s not for protecting from direct external attack from rain & road & salt spray . Any bike will stay relatively free from corrosion if fussed over enough & repeatedly gets washed polished & recoated frequently . Bikes are meant to be ridden , the old paint chip & corrosion won’t do them any harm . If things start to look a bit rough & tatty , the bike can always be given the odd touch up with some paint & the odd wipe with oily rag if the rider is a fastidious fuss pot .
@@maskedavenger2578 We all do things differently. This works for me, and I enjoy looking after my bike. I appreciate your input and hope you fun on your bike! 👍

Hi Phil would love to have your commitment to keeping the bike good, but may I ask how many miles you cover a year on your bike/s. The time you spend cleaning your bike is my travelling time on the bike. Many thks for the best detailed method of washing a bike.thks
@@MrBeracah Thanks for the vote of confidence. Remember this series was filmed during lockdown but saying that I do like to look after my bike as you can see in more recent videos. What about the radiator did you do it or give it a miss ?
I've got an EvoTech Radiator Cover and Oil Coiler Guard on mine so they're not easy to get to, but I have applied ACF50 to both and wipe over them both with a cloth when cleaning my bike.

I have the Yamaha tracer 9 GT, it is not in the same category, it is however the same with the throttle. It changes completely above 7k rpm, but can be ridden without waking the animal.
@@rcafmaintainer3723 i had the pleasure of riding a Tracer 9 GT earlier in the year on a Yamaha Ride Day, it’s a great bike. It only had 6 miles on the clock when I left the dealership so I was mindful that the tyres weren’t scrubbed in and I didn’t want to push it but I could tell it had some decent power when I did wind it up a little. Safe riding! 👍

Nice work and your bike looks well cared for, as for chain lube I’ve not bought any since say 1995, the dust etc sticks n wears it out, I pump gearbox oil via a chainsaw priming bulb just behind the front sprocket, rear wheel stays clean, it’s a perfect diy system chain n sprockets last much longer.
@@paulshort1174 Thanks so much. That sounds like a great setup, gearbox oil works really well on bike chains and your DIY pump is a fab idea! 👍

Any advice with light scratches. Products to remove/cover/reduce the appearance of?
@@hughpatrick3738 It really depends on how deep the scratch is to what I use and if it’s possible to remove it completely. You could start by using a polish and an applicator pad, just lightly using small circular motions polish over the scratch and surrounding area. You could also try the same technique but using a compound. In both cases I use Autobrite Direct products which have been proven effective, I’ve actually filmed a new series when I restored the paint on my old Hot Rod and the results are amazing. Restore cutting compound is the product I used, I also have a discount code. It’s always best to test it on a small area first. Loved the detailed video. I have bought my first big bike and will be following these steps. Thank you for the information mate! :)
@@LowEndTorque You’re very welcome, and thanks for the support. What bike have you bought?
@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones Its a 1997 Blackbird. I have been riding for 16 years though, hence it was relatively easier to get used to it. It is so easy to ride, trust me. Very predictable and linear power delivery. I like your Speed Triple too. Must say pretty immaculate and beautiful.
@@LowEndTorque Very nice, you can’t beat a classic to get everyone talking. My friend bought a 22 year old 1200 Bandit not too long ago with 6,000 miles on the clock. Thanks for the kind compliment about the Speed, I love it. Enjoy your bike and safe riding.
@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones Thank you and safe riding to you too! I did consider the Bandit 1200 but the Bird pulled my heartstrings differently. :) Hope to see you on a ride! :)
Wrong. Wiping it off is wiping it off. Also spraying the plastics. What for? Worried they will rust?
@@chrisenright7003 It adheres to the surface leaving a thin coating so you aren’t completely wiping it off. It freshens the plastics and leaves them looking like new.
Does the oil film make dust and dirt stick to the bike? I ride an adventure bike and actually ride it a lot off road. But live in a cold wet climate so would like to protect the bike as best I can during the colder months and during winter storage.
Sorry for the late response. When wiped down the acf50 leaves an ultra thin film to protect the bike from corrosion. I’ve never had a problem with it attracting dirt or causing it to stick to the bike!
Great work but I prefer not to use this product because its corosive and for aluminium parts and anodized aluminium is like a death breath.

Awsome Bike. But the hedlights looks zilly
@7:21 *Note do not over tighten that steel sump plug into that alloy casting - I did with a faulty wrench, I had to strip the whole underside of the bike to replace with a new sump. If you need to do this, use some gasket silicon on the sump gasket on both sides, the book says grease - but trust me and torque the studs to spec. (Buy a decent calibrated Torque Wrench, with a certificate that suits the NM - don't buy out the "general store" - check your manual on Torque specs, some years are different)
Any problem getting this/using it on exhaust headers? The Triumph manual says use a commercial available protectant on the exhaust system but no mention of a brand.
@@msromike123 This is great on exhaust headers and complete systems, I’ve been using it on mine for years! 😊

When you want a job done correctly, learn from an OCD'er. Rock on bro.
The reason for the washers are to create some distance between the bobbin and the swing arm to lessen the chance of scratching the swing arm with the hooks. If anything add more washers.
Dave restored the bodywork and painted my camaro back in 2003, we became good friends, he even had me trying to pinstripe the Coffee Grinder, unfortunately I wasn't happy with my work and Dave got Eddie Wimbell to give it the classic simple stripes of it's original build. He was an awesome dude, and I would visit him regularly for years, unfortunately losing touch over the last few years since moving out of london. Such a great video, and great memories of real good old boy.
The mechanic put grease on the threads of the spindle and then torqued it up. Given torque values are usually dry, unless otherwise stated.
@@OUTBACK66-ln2xu Thanks for your comment. As the spindle has a locking pin, I do think it’s a good idea adding a touch of copper grease to the lugs and spindle.
Great instructional video, Phil! Thanks a bunch! I find it difficult the get the bike in mint condition, never seem to get satisfied with the result thinking "i could've done more" it's ridicilous really. Its a vehicle not a trophy and vehicles are built to last/to be driven :)
@@fisherkalastaja Thanks for your encouragement, I’m pleased you enjoyed it. It can certainly be time consuming to get a bike spotless, and it doesn’t take much to get them dirty again, especially this year with the amount of rain we’ve had, but hey, for me I enjoy riding and cleaning, fortunately! 😁
@@TheAdventuresofPhilJonesYes, i can see you enjoy it, the time and effort you put in your videos speaks for itself and It's inspiring! Yes, i enjoy it too, I see it as quality time- as a disconnect from all the stress with the everyday life. The problem is only when i saw your video, I'm never satisfied! How long does it in general, for you, to clean it thoroughly? Would you recommend spend the money on a Metrovac Airforce blaster? They seem really good but quite expensive. But I'm seriously concidering one! Sorry for a long message! Thanks!
@@fisherkalastaja I’m pleased my passion comes over and thanks again for your kind comments and encouragement. Like you I find cleaning very therapeutic and rewarding. As for how long it takes really depends on how dirty the bike is and how many products I apply, and what else I have planned on any given day. I’d guesstimate at say 4-5 hours for a thorough clean or more sometimes, or 1-2 hours for a freshen up. I bought a Pet Dryer on Amazon for about £70 and it’s brilliant, certainly a game changer. Hi Phil, I followed your way of dealing with ACF-50. Can we put wax on it knowing that ACF-50 already leaves a hydrophobic film? When waxing, don't we remove the ACF-50? best regards, François from France😉
@@francoisbarax4890 Hi Francois. After I apply ACF-50 to the entire bike, I then apply Polish and Wax to the painted areas. I use ACF-50 as a barrier to stop the rust and corrosion. What I’ve been doing for over a year now is add a Ceramic Coating from AutoBrite Direct, this really helps displace the rain, and if the bike isn’t too dirty I just give my bike a light coat of Ceramic Quick Detailer which really works well and makes the bike and paint look amazing. H Phil/Others, In the past I have just sprayed on to classic cars and bikes, put away (left the ACF 50 on) then in the spring time - just put them back on the road and let nature slowly take the act 50 off. Why not do the same, what's the advantage in "taking the excess" off with a rag..? Why not spray and leave?
@@photocoach5483 Hi. Thanks for sharing your experience and technique. That’s a good question. Once applied, ACF50 only needs a thin layer to do its job, by wiping the access off it keeps the vehicle looking great while still protecting it from corrosion. Is it not necessary to run the engine at least twice or thrice a month, in order to maintain a thin film of oil.
@@madhanakumar6155 That’s a great question. I do mention in the video that some people say that if you start your bike up and let it tick over then condensation can build up in the engine and gearbox as you aren’t burning it off, I personally don’t think it’s a problem and do like to start my bike at least once or twice a month over the winter if I’m not riding it to keep everything moving as you rightly say! 👍
