I NEED more Trollhunters video essays. It's crazy it was so acclaimed but the fanbase was never as loud as Voltron/She-Ra/Kipo. And I also half agree with you. Claire started bland then became THAT GIRL and then went back to being Jim's crush only. I honestly think the character writing on this franchise sunk after Trollhunters's finale.

Angor Rot is a main villain. Ever notice how season 1 is exactly twice as long as the other seasons, and how Bular was killed in the middle of the first season? There are 4 seasons technically. Season 1’s villain is Bular. Season 2’s villain is Angor Rot. Season 3’s villain in Gunmar. And season 4 is Morgana!

You'll always have the support of me and some other men when it comes to better written women. Some of my favorite characters in fiction are female, like the scarlet witch, zatanna, Wonder Woman, katara, toph, and the list goes on.

I’m a female but I’ll admit I prefer Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter but that’s cause I had two brothers and we watched a lot of shonen together. I cannot tell you how much I can't stand the writing for Claire in Wizards. In Trollhunters even when she and Jim got together, she was still her own character with her own thoughts and even had an arc that wasn't about her relationship with Jim, he was still important to her and her story yes but it wasn't the only thing they focused with her character But in Wizards and Titans? Her entire character devolves into just being Jim's girlfriend. All her personality, interests, and quirks are just gone, in almost every scene she's in she has to mention Jim at least once, and all her agency is just replaced with her standing at the side doing nothing but crying at least once I'm not saying you can't have a story that focuses on a character's romantic relationship with their partner, but it can't be the ONLY thing you focus on

On the topic tales of Arcadia, i would love a video about Aja. I remember thinking her plot to prove herself as a fighter was cool. But disappointed she didn't do much in the movie. I haven't seen the series in awhile tho so i could be wrong.

Yeahhhhhh, most of the time I just pretend wizards and titans don't exist. There were just so many weird tropes in them that messed with world building and character development that was absolutely tragic.

They did this to Nari and Aja too!!! I will never forgive the writers for destroying her character for when she was at her peak, how most of the time Nari was basically nothing of a character, the ONLY Arcane Order to have basic sympathy!? I wish they did something with her and Douxie's relationship; it was sweet, and it wasn't much but the death scene with Douxie standing around her particles with the phrasing "No more running" was so BREAKING to me. The two had some great parells to one another about life, and they connected so well with one another,(shitty life at home, nari was mostly being abused, Douxie and Nari having fears of losing someone deep to them, and both are really smart) Douxie and Nari were meant to be canon,( in my opinion) Because Nari, in other words, basically got killed off without a full redemption.Nari is a great villain, but her death and writing choices were...questionable at best, she seems weak, emotionally and physically, at best, and half of the time, the writers baby her,(pretty sure she's a triplet) and the boiling down to a child thing weakens Nari so badly, people damn near think she's the same age as a 12 year old!! Nari's portrayal, good and bad, significantly impacted the storyline by adding complexity to the narrative through her vulnerability and internal conflict. Because she's the one Arcane Order who has basic connects to humans, and can feel their emotions and doesn't want the earth to blow up, this was basically her only character trait; soft for humans, and destroying her only family left. If we ever get a reboot, I want Nari to be fully developed and to have a proper death(If given) and a better character design!! Claire, Nari and Aja deserved better!!

imo Claire and Toby should have swapped "class archetypes" I feel like Toby had more set up early on for him to be a wizard of some sort (its been a while since I saw the show but if I remember right he had both an interest in stage magic as well as that one episode where he just became SUPER intelligent which they could have pivoted off of as the start to his whole "magic journey") And with how girl characters are often relegated to the "squishy" classes its always fun to see girls with big weapon wrecking shit

Excellent points all around. I will say, as soon as Claire got the shadow staff and realized it was controlled by ~emotions~ I knew her character was going to go downhill sooner rather than later 😢 of course Toby get the warhammer, which is controlled somehow to go from pocket size to fight size (we never get officially told like we do the shadow staff, but based on his reactions it's likely emotional also) but there's never a scene where Toby get abuse hurled at him by another character to activate his weapon (NotEnrique in the container full of Killahead bridge pieces scene im looking at you) Toby never needed help from everyone else to activate a special mode on his weapon (the mass evacuation scene in the gyre station) It's bothered me since I was a kid watching the OG teen titans cartoon and saw the starfire and raven swap bodies episode where they have to learn how to control each others powers via different emotions than they're used to. I'm so sick and tired of the female characters ALWAYS having emotion-based powers/weaponry. The shadow staff wasn't emotion-powered when Angor rot used it, so why was it suddenly emotions-based as soon as Claire got it? 🙄 The constant fixation on female characters having emotion-based weaponry/powers so the writers can have them "work through controlling their emotions" and have their magic act up when they have a crush or smth is SO fucking tired and lazy. Hell, when they try to do the same thing with male characters they get to work through feelings of inadequacy and confidence, which they tackle once and then it's over. Female characters get to work through maintaining a constant steady grip on their emotions during life or death warzones/battles, most often during puberty, and the potential of them losing their grip is constantly available in case the writers need a quick reason for their side to lose the fight this time because they're too lazy to actually write something good 😤

I avoid making “The girl” characters by making friend groups have about the same amount of girls and boys. If the story is aimed at boys, I just make the POV a boy.

I didn’t watch this show long enough to see her have a character to assassinate. From what I saw, she was just the MC’s crush, and kind of generically spunky.

Warning: long comment, a bit rambley and rant-y but it stays on topic I love your Trollhunters videos and if you read this, I hope to see more cause this show/series needs to be talked about more (haven’t seen many talking about this show) Not gonna lie, Claire never really was my favourite character (that honour goes to Angor Rot, Strickler, Barbara, Blinky, Aaarrgghh!, etc.) simply because for the first part we don’t know her that well (as she’s not brought into the main cast yet) then when we do she’s just…. OBSESSED with getting her baby brother back -as a sibling I get wanting to do anything for your younger sibling BUT Claire wants to get him back when she KNOWS he’s not in any immediate danger and without a real plan for how to navigate the Darklands and not release Gunmar! If I were in Clair’s shoes while I’d do anything to save my sibling I’d also try not to damn the world in the process! “My sibling is in the Darklands, that’s bad… BUT they aren’t in any danger, and I need to make a plan so I and my friends can get out safely and so we don’t release a troll warlord” That and once she gets the shadow staff she kinda acts a bit entitled like…. Yeah you got a magic staff…. But you’re new to this Claire… maybe learn how to use your magic skills and stop picking a fight with Toby (who’s been with Jim and knows the rope better than you) Her in Wizards honestly…. Didn’t impact me at all…. Maybe it was the way they rode her or maybe it’s just the fact that I haven’t touched the wizard since I first watched it in 2020 but I honestly just don’t feel anything for wizards Claire…. At least with Trollhunters I eventually got emotional for her once she stopped being so brother/Jim obsessed…. (I get Jim is her boyfriend, but she also has to realize he’s the Trollhunter he can handle himself to a degree.) but it honestly feels like wizards Claire is completely different than Trollhunters Claire….. but like not in the good “ oh a character developed and so they don’t feel the same that they did at the beginning of the story” way it’s more like “the writers forgot how to write this character so they just kind of went with what was on her packaging” way…. Like… Trollhunters Claire (to me) felt like a Mary Sue at times, but at least she could hold her own in a fight and it made sense and she was doing stuff that actually meant something to the plot, but Wizards Clair just feels like the typical Mary Sue/Damsel where she just…. Does NOTHING yet the plot bends around her somehow… Claire went from an actual character to a wet blanket, damsel in destress and weak (not in the good way where she starts weak and grow stronger one way or another, but the bad way where she is weak and STAYS weak in Wizards) ALSO HOW DOES DOXIE KNOW MORE ABOUT HER POWERS THAN HER?!? If it was Morgana mentoring her on more advanced shadow magic, and Claire just went along with it (still absolutely hating Morgana’s guts but playing along and doing it for the sake of knowledge/the greater good) to learn those advance techniques then I could understand Claire needing to possibly learn and adapt her methods (As Morgana did either invent shadow magic, or at least master it at that time -I don’t remember-) that would also be interesting for a character conflict…. BUT NOT DOXIE WHO’D KNOW MORE OF MERLINS MAGIC TEACHING HER SHADOW MAGIC!! Also agreed with you on Wizards, it either ignores canon (how the hell is angle rot in the black sea before Morgana is even there?!) or tries to do a sloppy redemption for Morgana. She traumatized Claire and try to kill Claire and then said “we had fun” and of course didn’t even apologize to Angor rot for stealing his soul (which honestly I’m insulted that they just brought him in for that one scene and then we never saw him again. Are you kidding me? I’m an Angor Rot fan as I really like his story, him as a villain, and an overall character is really interesting to me) like you could do an entire video on Clair and Angor Roy’s ties and trauma to Morgana and how Claire got some justice in defeating her (I don’t think Angor did cause he dies immediately during that, but that’s just me) and you’re absolutely RIGHT about her abusing them (Angor suffered clear/likely emotional, physical, and mental abuse as well as forced servitude!!! And Claire got possessed and likely developed some PTSD from it given how she acts with the Shadow realm) and then just killed her off without her, even apologizing for anything really…. Like you said, the writers pretty much just ignored the fact that she helped a troll warlord in his genocidal attempt to essentially take over humanity and eat all of us and expect us to see her as redeemed without her really doing anything… I am buying it. I heard wizards went through a few developmental/preproduction issues and while I don’t know all of them or anything that when I’m behind the scenes much I heard that what they had planned for wizards was 100% better than what we got…. Which I believe.

I already thought that Wizards was the weakest show of the three, but I never noticed how much it ruined Claire, as I was more focused on how they ruined Steve and the overall worldbuilding. So, great video! I agree with you!

Well one thing's for sure, the Wonderful Precures are the weakest because they don't use close combat, instead their only way of defeating villians is by hugging them. THEY HAVE NO BATTLE EXPERIENCE

Also, I never took Douxie's and Claire's interactions as "pseudo-romantic". I saw it as a healthy platonic guy/girl relationship where they were allowed to be comfortable with each other. They help and support each other like real friends should. I actually applaud Tales of Arcadia for this instead of going down the cliché love triangle route.

Wow, sexists are already in the comments Anyway, good video. I agree 100% Wizards broke so much of its own rules it was dissapointing. Also the fact that multiple characters are just... the same age? Like, I get that wizards live a long time and trolls are on a different aging scale but did they really have to use the exact same model for Draal and Blinky? The way they talk about the trollhunter lore in the first show they make it sound like ancient history but then in wizards they're just... regular adults when the first trollhunter came around?

So did y'all forget about Deya? I get being mad at the "sexist writing" but pretending only the boys got fight scenes when Bellroc (who was referred to as a she at the time) and Deya (whose arc was all about rising up to become a leader to the trolls and even fought Gunmar) got a piece of the action is crazy. Of course, it's not my place to get involved in these discussions nor should I tell you how a woman should be written but I do agree that they could've done better with Claire in Wizards (everyone could've had a bit more time to cook). I don't exactly think she was ruined but more so had to have her screen time rushed or cut down for the sake of the plot and thus could only keep her "essential" scenes (which obviously cut out a lot of her other core character traits which is an L, but I gotta say it how it is). I also don't think it was sexist for Douxie to help her with magic. Yes, Claire taught herself which is impressive in it of itself but Douxie (even training wheels drop out Douxie) would still have a better handling of the basics than her. The rest of the complaints are fair enough though so I'm not gonna get into that.

i Disagree in the Past i used to think the Same as you but as i thought about it i Come to understand it even More if anything and i hope i won't get attack for this. i actually Prefer her Version in Wizards Sure her yapping over Jim is a bit annoying Sometimes. her Guilt come because her inability to grasp what going on She always had a fear of Losing Someone She Love. her disagreeing with Merlin and Wanting to Stay in the Past is her inability to Accept that She Lost Jim and She had a lot more extreme emotional and cries a lot because She feel useless with Enrique She had all her and her friends backing her up Plus She had full faith in Jim after Some time that he Would Save her brother yeah it took time but it happen Also her brother was a lot Safer Jim then was Constantly Suffering because of her Mistake. i do think they Could a lot of things better Like Develop the Whole Morgana thing Much More and make her Arc to be about her not being afraid of becoming Like her but a lot of it what we could've got is a fault of Wizards not being Long enough rather then Clair's fault. Also i'm Sorry but Douxie and Claire's relationship is Clearly meant to be Platonic. Douxie is Clearly the only person Claire could fully trust because you couldn't fully trust anyone else there and her friends Like Toby and Blinky didn't come with them. and i don't think any of their interaction imply more then that.

In the movie they could’ve done much better like Aja could’ve had more aliens help out and douxe And other wizards helping out and other dragons two to fight off. What left of the changelings they could’ve helped out the enemies over two of them also I think Toby’s sacrifice they shouldn’t have reset things or go back in time I would have loved to see the outcome of what they changed in Camelot and how impacts their future also I would have loved to see the fall out When Toby sacrifices himself for everyone else and they have to live with the fallout after that

Also I would have loved to seen the wizard Council and the rules that they have in place I would’ve love to see more different creatures and I would have loved that Claire And Jim and the others learning a lesson

She’s so obsessed with Jim and trying to save him and I hate how the best of everything and how she can learn a language quickly or learn magic much quicker than other wizards also I would have loved to see the consequences for her recklessness she cared more about saving Jim and she got Merlin kilowatt and she didn’t get scolded for her recklessness Also I would have loved to see like they could enter into Remote lol you could’ve finished with Audra story in the beginning the first season and then having her brother and Toby and aargh are having their own missions

When I finished trollhunters I was desperate to atleast see more of the world so I watch Wizards and honestly I dont really like it that much but it's alright as it's own thing( i guess) as there was so many plotholes that I was confused(I was really looking forward on how Morgana made the Changelings! but nope)
