    I’d like to add one more request to your list: If possible, can the actor playing Quasimodo be disabled as well as Roma, even if the disability isn’t one that includes having the hunched back referred to in the title. Disability representation may be more common than proper Romani representation, but it’s still not represented enough, and being othered because of a medical condition is a significant plot point. I’m angry that Disney didn’t take the chance to work with any of the Roma groups who reached out the first time.

      @Swiftstart  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oooo! I completely agree!
      I feel that a person with a disability can better understand Quasimodo as a person and would also do a better job at playing him
      Hopefully if this remake happens they make the right choices

      Hi @caitlyncarvalho7637 ! Sorry for the somewhat late replies- i've been crazy with work and am now tackling them all. TH-cam has also been very bad about notifiying me when I have new comments which is super annoying.
      The comment on medical usage seems to have poofed but I saved it into my scratch doc so I'll answer anyways:
      I admit I'm not positve what you were referring to, I assume you mean like generic human representation in medical diagramns and such? In my opinion the best practice is where there are at minimum 3 samples; a light skin toned person, a mid-toned person and a dark toned person. Especially with skin diseases where symptoms may appear different on different toned skin. I know that recently a black med student named Malone Mukwende produced a handbook on this issue which will hopefully lead to better resources for doctors to use.
      I am of the mind that when it comes to high risk groups, attention should be brought to doctors to keep an eye out for those things. Such as black populations being tested for sickle cell at an early age. But especually for minoriites where they rarely marry outside such as most famously, ashkenazi jews who are carriers for a number of genetic illnesses. The same goes for the Roma. A lot of the responsibility however can fall on the person themselves; some of these things are just too niche or little known.
      I actually just recently got myself genetic tested for assorted ailments because of exactly this- I wanted to know if I was a carrier for any less than fun illnesses like the ones you mentioned. Happy to report that I'm completely in the clear for anything like that but it is always a good idea to know what illnesses tend to be carried by your ethnicity.
      Roma DNA only just got enough of a sampleset for Ancestry.com to pinpoint it as Roma and not as 'indian with a lot of eastern europe stuff'. I actually had fun watching the data on my tests shift over to reflect that. The knowledge will only be improved with time.
      It's possible they were a traveller. But it's difficult to know for sure.

    Hear me out, instead of doing a shot for shot remake, why not incorporate some stuff from the Broadway musical (and the original 1999 German musical), make the Gargoyles less comedic, and lean more on the dark tone?

    • @Swiftstart
      @Swiftstart  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have only seen bits and pieces of the musical but I will say I like some of its lyrical choices better.
      Sadly they have already stated / it’s also been confirmed by Allan Menken that the remake will not draw from the musical at all which is…. A drag
      I feel for menken having to write the Same score for the third time over in theory

    I love the Hunchback of Notre Dame as a story in general, and I didn’t even know who the Romani were until seeing the Disney film, that they were an actual ethnic group suffering from discrimination. While I agree pretty much every version is pretty racist, but I think the story could still be used to raise awareness about the Roma, if newer versions are more inclusive and less exploitative.

    • @Swiftstart
      @Swiftstart  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment.

  • @Drums_of_Liberation

    Okay hear me out. While I know Disney is too creatively bankrupt for this, it'd be interesting I think. When you have Frollo going on about his disgust for the Roma have them be portrayed as all the stereotypes so the viewer sees through Frollo's eyes , but when the heroes interact with the Roma they're properly represented as the should be .Plus keeping some of the more "problematic" stuff would keep the story true to the time period of history in which the story takes place. While yes representation is important, we tend to go too far in trying to see everything through a modern lens and it breaks the immersion of the initial intentions of the work. But I'm just a random guy on the internet not a Hollywood elite so what do I know about storytelling and what not.

    Oooo definitely excited for Anastasia and Tales! That’s gonna be awesome!
    Honestly as person that loves learning about other people’s culture, but only want to learn about it from a reliable source. If they were able to better represent the Romani that would be great culture awareness, as I’ve never seen it represented well in anything else. Just yeah I definitely agree though that someone else should write it though. Comedy is not needed here. But it is unfortunate this was my only introduction to the culture and still see the stereotypes pop up when one shows up in a series or movie I watch.
    But Disney has gotten better at it over time with Thai being represented in Amphibia and Ghost of Molly McGee (Jewish as a bonus) and Polynesian from Moana and Doogie Kamealoha. Before I never knew anything about these cultures before watching those and makes me really appreciate the awareness. :D
    I thank Blues Clues for being the spark of my interest of learning other cultures, when they made a holiday episode that went over Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza. And was so insanely mad how no other cartoons went over Kwanza at the time as I wanted to know more about it. Sadly I didn’t know anyone that celebrates it and internet was not as advanced back then so it wasn’t happening! T-T

    • @Swiftstart
      @Swiftstart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I'm super excited too- not sure when either will be; Anastasia still has a lot of research to do but tales is in the script writing stage :)
      I absolutely love how Disney handled Moana and especially Ann in Amphibia! (hvent seen molly mcgee derp) Both are awesome cases of how having actual members of the culture on staff can make truly special characters and works.
      I think Arthur and Static Shock are the only two shows I know of with Kwanza features. I definitely love it when holiday specials choose to be teaching moments. Even with Christmas- I was recently surprised when I had to explain the nativity to some non-christian friends because Christmas specials are frequently just Santa/Non-secular in favor of 'not offending anyone'. When they could be used to help prevent ignorance and spread understanding.
      I actually have a little bit of a plan to make a video on christmas specials when that time comes around because they are so interesting to me.

      Didn’t know about Arthur so that’s good to know and makes the most sense Static Shock would cover that. But back then it was really hard for me to watch it all since it only played on Kids WB so early so I definitely see how I missed that one. The pure cable life was rough back then when you missed an episode and had no way to see it until TV networks decided when to replay it. Lol XD
      Oh that sounds really cool! Look forward to seeing it (I’m guessing in December)! :D

    The Hunchback of Notre Dame is still a stunning and gorgeous piece of cinama, definitely worth watching over and over again. It's got it's problems and even Doug Walker was able to see that the portrayal of Roma people was oddly confused but Disney will never make a movie more beautiful than this.
    Hopefully that remake doesn't come to fruition. It sounds utterly worthless.

    I readt a post by a Rom saying the gipsies in the movie are all ugly which is racist...
    He probably didnt see the movie because everyone but the main characters (one of which is Esmeralda... And of course Im not countint Quasi) were totally hideous

    • @Swiftstart
      @Swiftstart  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe you need to watch the movie again yourself. While there is definitely some asset reusing, especially since it’s the first film to use CGI models to fill in gaps- (I know I spotted the chinless woman reused as a generic parisian background character)
      The other factor is that obviously we are dealing with very cartoony looking people with exaggerated body features.
      Lets compare the people in God Help the Outcasts vs the ones in Court of Miracles since both songs nicely show multiple people of one group or the other.
      In God Help the Outcasts, apart from Esmeralda obviously we are only seeing Parisians.
      In the first 23 seconds we have a collection of people kneeling in prayer. Only one man is truly in focus and he is attractive, proportionate and well generally normal looking. The others we can see are much the same- any distortion having to do with their distance from the camera.
      Next we have the parade of people walking single file- we see the same man as before and other normal looking people.
      The shadowy outlines that pass over Esmeralda are highly exaggerated and the first one could be called ugly- but its just an outline.
      Next we have the old woman who asks for love- shes old, but not ugly. She is normally proprotioned and looks normal.
      In group that joins her we have a fat man who does have a large nose, a old man with big ears, a normal looking woman and the original kneeling man.
      They all have teeth, well groomed hair, and properly covering clothing.
      Now lets flip over to the court of miracles, which of course other than Phoebus, features entirely Roma.
      At 39 seconds we have a group of 4 men- wearing masks granted but we can see from their lower jaws that almost all of them are missing teeth and that their beards are unkempt. The first two men take off their masks and look mostly passable.
      But then the next batch comes along. At exactly 1 minute in we have a group of 5 truly criminal looking dudes with whacky proportions, crooked long noses, thick lips on one, buck teeth on another, and wild hair. They are wearing either rags or entertainer costumes. They immediately brandish weapons to emphasize how dangerous they are.
      6 seconds later we have the next trio- missing teeth, weird proportions, rags (fair to these guys i guess cause they are actually posing as beggars), next three- big noses, surprisingly no rags, but definately not attractive.
      Then we get the exactly 2 seconds of normal looking people…
      To be followed by the 3 ugly women- two with massive masculine jaws, all three with big noses, behind them is a slackjawed man with the weirdest side goatees you’ll ever see.
      Once again, rags.
      I’m a big fan of the midriff baring woman in orange who appears in the next scene bc her shirt is that tattered and also her chinless friend.
      I could go on, but basically,
      They drew the Roma ugly.
      Period.
      And definitely to get across the idea that they should ‘look’ dangerous and untrustworthy.
      As my editor nicely put it: I get the feeling that the goal with hunchback was to make people the opposite Like ugly is good people and pretty is bad people But because that means singling out entire races it just goes awful And it doesn’t account for esmeralda or Phoebus being beautiful

    Honestly, as a Canadian but who is born little from Indigenous (my family tree was from Eabametoong in North Spirit). While I know I'm not helping about some mentions of racism or any of that. But yet as someone who does character designs and some of that like other artists.
    But will give notes and some contexts that you, well, mostly miss out as I'm getting at fairly.
    4:46 Supposedly this unknown reason for Romanis forcedly left was supposedly may to escape from the sultan, named Mahmud, who's from Ghazni in Afghanistan, who the general, leading a invasion at Northern parts of India which causes a lot of his soldiers to push the populations out of their hometown, other words, as supposedly, nowhere to find and call home outside of India as which they remain travel to different paths around Europe as all know already (at least I search).
    I know it's not a thing for Romanis as being described as of "Fortune tellers" or "Free-spirited Wanderers, traveling place to place as free as a bird" part, yet I know they were victims since centuries ago to so far recent, yet it is may way to get money from what they have is; Music and Dances that have some that whatever Europe didn't have seen before. Pretty much of a "Freely dancing Wanderers that is seen place and other as a enjoying traveler", while yet I know they are some beggars as well, seemly in the film so too, yet in a criminal way to just look pretend of some Romanis "lose eye sights" or "misses some legs or cannot walk".
    Yet while they live through Europe in the normal order as what they live in as always.
    *"All drawn as ugly caricatures with big noses"* I could said it is may be an artistic choice designing when comes to that (don't meant by being racist or not, but idk), yet not only them but represents the differences between of age and characteristics when comes to some background characters or very minor characters seen in screen (plus most of them don't have big noses or so like some woman or children), at least same little most some of Parisians drawn like that as well but not some look too ugly as they were.
    *"and many of them wear Rags"* Well, suppose said of they are wear those type of clothes more than rags as it is medieval, but however I guess it is a short evolutionary of their clothing since after they arrived in Europe, the weather differences have them to wire something different from India, but I will said this that the clothing for all of them was supposedly make them different then Parisians living in Paris that wore just what they wore seen in most medieval artwork, yet their clothing stand out more to show some of the differences between from ones that were born and raised, and the other that wasn't from here but somewhere else in the world. Think about it, it is quite hard for Romanis to wear the same as they wear from India yet have to be different from what they used to be to get over from winters, falls and bit hotter summers to deal with a lifestyle they never had before from the first time since moving out.
    While for sure mentions from your video of the inaccuracies of Esmeralda's clothing, while yeah, may be gonna sound "sexual", but yet, her clothing is I can guess, stand out viewable of other people of her kind.
    About the Court of Miracles (unlike something from Novel), it was served as the hideout and safe harem for the Romanis to just so they can hide from Frollo, since will note this that Frollo was being "taking care" of them one by one for 20 years, pretty much executing every each of them whatever they were caught and arrested. It is pretty much to hide under the city since why or what else they would do if they were easily captured if they were seen on the surface in the entirety of Paris.
    *"The very first thing they try to do is hang Quasi and Phoebus"* *"And that even then, that's still murder"*
    Well that was the point because Clopin, leader and king of his people, were only to protect themselves from Frollo's wrath and his arresting to killing of the Romanis from during in 20 years, not to mention shortly was that Quasi and Phoebus were almost hung because they were mistakenly thought as spies sent by Frollo to find their location.
    The film adaptations between of Esmeralda and Quasi was their nationalities were swapped, hear me out, as I recall from commenters at some other videos, they said that the animators who did with Quasi was a French-born baby as mentions that about that his birth mother died when gave birth to him and was abandoned after his birth before later the Romanis, less one woman, saw the baby, adopted the poor deformed baby as her own, which sadly haven't last long right before to the "tale opening" set from 20 years ago (1462). That's what I only know to hear from.
    So pretty much to something was that Quasi was only a French male with deformity, adopted by the Romanis, as the adopted mother's lover tells her to shut "it" up, (as her lover did not see the baby as his son) and while surely the adopted mother tells the baby "little one" as have a nice caring for him yet much later killed by Frollo.
    For any wish listing to see the Romanis seen in the film, it is gonna be hard shortly as I know in the production, as I look around and search, they weren't at least some of known Romani actors between or since, less just I try searching. While as I said Disney's Quasi was different then being a deformed-born Romani as in the novel but was swapped as a French-born, so save up for Esmeralda and Clopin. However, I do think it will be different when it comes to culture music and stuff for the January 6's Topsy Turvy, like since it's a day of Feast of Fools.
    Even, if any, Romanis will be given training and know how to become an actor in Live Action if any type of groups were invited in the production, just first time being as actors and stuff all.
    And all in all, when the production was somewhere near finished to show the public, it will be the first time Romanis were shown in the live action screen, pretty much given a nice representation, may or so "a finally" for them.

    Why on Earth would a Hunchback remake be racist? The original wasn't racist! It might have dabbled in the stereotypes, but then I'm pretty sure the original Victor Hugo novel did too!

    • @Swiftstart
      @Swiftstart  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I’m going to assume that you didn’t actually watch the video before making this comment. I’m going to recommend that you watch this one or my old one (which goes into far greater detail and covers both the novel and the film) in order to understand that yes actually, it is racist. And especially the novel version.
      That being said, I’ll try and summarize the basics as to why Hunchback does more than just ‘dabble’ in stereotypes. Little tricky since this video is already a simplified version of the other one.
      So:
      1. 6 separate Romani organizations contacted Disney asking to be fairly represented in the film during its production, all 6 were ignored and there were no Roma consultants on the film.
      2. While the film recognizes that the Romani are discriminated against it utterly fails to acknowledge the reasons why. And in doing so its characters fall into racist pitfalls such as Esmeralda saying that if she could make cool figurines like Quasi then she wouldn’t be dancing in the streets for money; yea so in the real world she couldn’t even enter Paris legally much less get a job there. Because of her forced nomadic lifestyle she has adapted to have a portable profession.
      3. The Roma are depicted as thieves living in the catacombs. And you get there by following a mystical map necklace. The catacombs are a literal mass grave and are just icky.And when we get there we don’t meet any families only… thieves. Technically theres like 2 blink and you’ll miss them background kids but when 99% of what we see are dirty thieves crawling around in piles of dead people… its not great.
      4. Esmeralda is the walking embodiment of the sexy roma woman stereotype. Sure it may be bad that Frollo has the hots for her but they sure went out of their way to make it clear that the viewer should too.
      5. Apart from Esmeralda they are frequently drawn as ugly and many of them wear rags for clothing.
      I could go on but at this point I’d rather you, and anyone else reading this just watched the videos. I’m sorry if it means that your favorite movie isn’t what you thought it was. There is a lot more than just ‘dabbling’ going on. And even then, dabbling in stereotypes sucks
